Feature – Mego / Bif Bang Pow! Fourth Doctor

Feature – Mego / Bif Bang Pow! 4th Doctor

During the 1970’s Denys Fisher in collaboration with US toymaker Mego released various 9″ Doctor Who figures. Included in the range were the Fourth Doctor, Leela, K-9 , The Giant Robot K1, a Cyberman, Dalek, and a Tardis.

Although the articulated action figures had very little resemblance to their characters and the Cybermen and Dalek were not to the standards we are used to today, this range is has become highly collectable and good examples with all accessories and original box are very much sought after and can fetch hundreds of pounds.

Bif Bang Pow! was founded in 2005 an now has a large range of retro style figures from many cult shows including Doctor Who. The fist wave consists of The 4th Doctor, Cybeman, Sontaran and Decayed master with second wave consisting of Leela, Scaroth, Morbius and Sutekh

The Bif Bang Pow! 4th Doctor and packaging…

Old meets new – The Mego 4th Doctor (there is some debate on who this was actually modelled on) with its Bif Bang Pow counterpart…

The 4th Doctor Mego figure is probably the easiest to find but as usually lost his hat, sonic screwdriver and in many cases his scarf however even this figure with original box and accessories can command a high price.

Although their look may appear odd compared to the ranges we see today there are many worldwide collectors of these retro style figures.

The older one is 39 years older
You would have thought that the quality of toys would have increased even more over 4 whole decades

Loving the positive comments about these! I do think it is mostly down to the fact that the Fourth Doctor is an actual production piece and not a prototype, plus it looks far superior standing next to the primitive Denys Fisher doll of the late 70’s/early 80’s.

I’m focusing on these more than I am the 5″ Character Options line. Mainly because I only go for the Forbidden Planet exclusives, so I prefer these funner and cheaper BifBangPow! products.

It’s a shame that us Brits are having to have the TARDIS set imported, so it is £60 rather th

I agree completely, it is a great shame that the TARDIS isn’t available at a cheaper price.

who else could the mego be based on?

Yeah, the Mego Doctor’s sculpture was for someone else (can’t remember who – maybe six million dollar man) but they just used the head for the Fourth Doctor instead -that’s why it looks nothing like him.

I have heard people say, although I do not know whether in truth or jest, that it was Gareth Hunt from The New Avengers.

I don’t like how small the Doctor is 😕
Why did they make them SO SMALL!

P.S. I do collect Character Building as well though so it must be bigger…

This is actually quite big, just under the scale of the 12″ figures I think, so its fairly tall actually 🙂

It’s 8″ so in between CO’s 5″ stuff and their old 12″ line.

One thing about the Mego head- it may not look much like Tom Baker but, unlike the Bif Bang Pow figure, at the least the hat fits on his head!
