Really sad news, was only watching the Romans the other day. Does that mean Mike Mungarvan is now the earliest surviving Dalek operator?

As far as I know Ricky Newby from Day of the Daleks is still alive. So he is the earliest living Dalek operator.

With SDCC coming up next month has anyone heard/seen any mention of the new Who Funko Pops being released there or any other news on release date assuming they’ll still be going ahead with producing them?
Also wondering if FP will be producing any new Who merchandise for SDCC. We were promised more Tardis Console pins this year but no more have been listed yet since the 9th/10th Console pin.

“Oh noooo!” as he said in nightmare of Eden. Sad to see he’s gone. He was great in time warrior and nightmare. And in lots of tv series and a fair few movies.

He was an excellent comic foil in The Time Warrior….’a Norman ninny with a mighty nose….’
And, having watched Destiny of the Daleks and City of Death 2 days ago, I could certainly watch Nightmare of Eden again….with the mismatched Mandrels…

So with the series out to tender got me thinking after watching The Rest Is Entertainment ..so BBC Studios is a main contender to win the contract..but what about Big Finish? They have loads sofa talented writers, Nick Briggs is the in charge, hundreds of stories they could work into televised episodes, have done animations for lost stories.
Briggs as Showrunner is a great choice.

They have zero tv experience plus they don’t have any studio space or equipment. The amount of investment to even get on the shortlist for consideration would financially sink them without a trace.

      June 17th, 2026 - 12:39am

BBC Studios could be the funders/produces with Big Finish as the writers/creatives.

    • bookcollector

      June 17th, 2026 - 12:52am

James big finish would still have to considerably contribute to the budget. Estimates say around 3 million an episode (half of the Disney deal budget) is required. There is no way big finish could fund a TV series. As Gordon says they would need to buy a set of studios and hire the production personnel. There is a huge difference between creating audio stories and running a major TV production

    • Gordon

      June 17th, 2026 - 1:11am

Add to what bookcollector said bbc studios aren’t going to put people in charge of creative that has never written for tv before. Briggs is simply a non starter for that reason alone.

I’ve said this before I don’t want any long term doctor who writers being put in charge of the show and that extends to big finish too. A fresh approach is heavily needed

    • Missyrules

      June 17th, 2026 - 1:20am

Reeltime pictures are a good example of why big finish would struggle to make doctor who on TV. Reeltime are a company that makes visual content for other companies including TV stations abroad. But when it comes to drama, specifically doctor who, Keith barnfather has made no secret that he has struggled with budgets and logistics even for his shorter dramas. Big finish have no capacity to make TV shows whilst Reeltime shows the reality of making dramas and science fiction particularly is the need for a great deal of money, time and experience. To start from scratch would be hugely expensive and the chances of big finish surviving would be slim. Not to mention that the BBC would be highly unlikely to give the future of the show to a company that has never made a TV show and has no capacity to do so. BBC studios will not be able to fund big finish to make the show. The tender requires a company that can bring the show in. If BBC studios make the show it will be them on their own with a much reduced budget – not necessarily a bad thing as it would force more creativity in the writing and production side rather than a reliance on expensive special effects or in partnership with a company that can provide an increased budget. Doctor who is very expensive to make and I do think that along with the current public perception of the show will put a lot of companies off. I’ve read several articles quoting companies that expressed concerns over budgets and viability.

I think it is unforgivable that RTD is now saying that he never wrote a script for a Christmas special. I sure there was many fans who were looking forward to this Christmas special. I can’t say I was one. RTD is a effectively saying he lied about the Christmas special, which is not very nice way to treat the loyal fans who have still supported him over the last couple of years. I wonder how DWM will spin this.

      June 13th, 2026 - 3:41pm

I was looking forward to it….partly because it would have been 18 long months since the last Dr Who, partly to put to bed once and for all Billie Piper (that sounded better in my head) and find out finally who the 16th Doctor would be..
So even though I’m more a Classics fan….its still fun to have a little new Who now and again…

    • James

      June 13th, 2026 - 3:58pm

He said he had written it 3 words in dwm…..the bbc said that he was writing one when they announced after Disney+ deal ended…Murray told said multiple versions had been written…so what had he been doing since may 2025?

Then had everyone on the edge of there seats a few weeks ago when he was on radio 2 all happy and laughing saying an announcement would be coming soon.

If anything he shouldn’t have said anything.

What a way to end 20 years of modern who. At least the classic era ended better and ace and the doctor walked off looking forward to more adventures. Now we are just left with so many questions unanswered. Reality War was rewritten to let Ncutti leave…why didn’t they wrap up more at the same time. They pretty much knew Disney wouldn’t pick up another season so they had the chance…not leave like it did.

A crap Omega….all that stupid fuss about a baby that I couldn’t have cared less about….it was a rubbish final story, really….Survival was indeed much better….
And it was supposed to be in an alternative Hackney, according to the teaser…which made us all think of Susan, Shoreditch and Coal Hill school…Oh well, I moaned about all that at the time…

    • Bookcollector

      June 13th, 2026 - 6:45pm

Considering they wrapped up the omega/rani story in 30 mins they had plenty of time to make more of it, that’s what was so disappointing about it. But as war chief says I talked about that at the time and frankly it’s that quality of writing that makes me realise I’m not to bothered when or if who comes back. I do think the lies about a special were very ill-judged. It’s very disrespectful to fans especially those who did support Davies’ era. Still I was going to use the special as the final decider (beware the mistfall, sorry, sorry) but I think my mind is made up now after the lies. I’m happy with who I have and it’s more than enough to see me into my dotage lol

I agree as well chief, I didn’t really get the whole child thing. Seemed rather pointless to me. But then bigeneration was a legend in the giggle and by the reality war the doctor “often thinks bigeneration is the time lords way around their sterility.” Just poor writing as far as I’m concerned. June 12th, 2026 - 7:57pm

We’ve had plenty of spin-offs and with 8, at Big Finish. Its not *less* than the show because its a different medium.

    • Professor Flibble

      June 13th, 2026 - 1:06am

I would love to have listened to tons of Big Finish by now but it being audio-only has always been a barrier for me and many other fans, and I wish people would stop ignoring that in these sorts of discussions. I’m not ruling out that I will have found a way to enjoy it at some point, but at the moment I can’t consider it an appropriate substitute for the show.

I struggle to visualise the stories in my mind and one of my favourite things about Doctor Who is its visual spectacle. I like the monsters. I like the planets. I like seeing the characters. A lot of hardcore Big Finish fans wonder why more people don’t get into it without realising that audio really isn’t for everyone and it’s very much an acquired taste.

    • Professor Flibble

      June 13th, 2026 - 1:28am

Additionally, just because Big Finish has a gigantic back catalogue, and they’re still pumping out tons of audio stories, why can’t people still also want spin-off content that they can watch? I love that Big Finish exists and that its done so much, what I *have* listened to I’ve mostly liked, we’re incredibly lucky to have them, but I don’t want their audio output to be ALL that Doctor Who’s recorded expanded universe content is.

I’m begging for animated content. I’ve said about it before here recently, had people saying how unfeasible it is, doesn’t stop me yearning for it. It doesn’t seem right that Doctor Who – the biggest sandbox in science fiction and the perfect family sci-fi – its only original animated content is Scream of the Shalka, Infinite Quest, Dreamland…and, well, that Daleks! series. Great to hear about the Cbeebies series but I’d hope that’s just the start. Because there’s so much untapped potential. So many great expanded universe characters we’ve never seen on screen, so many new planets we could see, the chance to see Doctors come back full-time without their age being a concern. To see Doctor Who leave the dull confines of modern day Earth far more frequently without budget being an issue.

Just because some people don’t feel like they need it doesn’t mean others can’t want it.

Yes. Just the Christmas Special cancelled.

The internet is going on like it has been fully cancelled.

Tender will take about 6 months going by other bbc shows timescales. After pre production, writing and casting I can’t see it going into filming production until Summer 2027 at the earliest.

I expect it to launch again in 2028.

    • Amypondfan

      June 11th, 2026 - 1:45pm

Situation with who is different though. This is a very expensive show that at the moment has a limited appeal with audiences. Add to that many companies seeing this as a poisoned chalice with the viscous fans on the Internet complaining about every decision and I don’t know if this will be an easy run to a new series. Tom spilsbury said after the Disney deal to expect 5-6 years delay. I think that’s not an unreasonable time frame for a company having to start from scratch. I also think the show needs to take time for a major reassessment. I think 2027 is very optimistic.

    • ..

      June 11th, 2026 - 2:05pm

With all the negativity, it not not beyond the realms of possibility that, if a new production team and sponsor is found quickly, then we could get a Christmas special 2027? 18 months from now, a singular episode, let’s hope

    • Amypondfan

      June 11th, 2026 - 2:11pm

      From a news outlet…

“Speaking to several unnamed production companies involved in making UK drama, however, Deadline found hesitation about taking the show on, after concerns over recent storylines and Davies’ “sledgehammer” approach to tackling topics of diversity.

“You would have to be mad,” one source said. “[It’s a] bit of a nightmare for any producer in this market with the shadow of the Disney fallout,” said another. A third suggested the series’ budget would likely be around $3 million per episode — half of the budget for the episodes Disney previously funded.

The report tallies with comments from former Doctor Who Magazine editor Tom Spilsbury, who last year suggested it would likely be “five or six years before we see anything new,” as the series’ next incarnation is determined. “At which point, it will be the children of 2005 who will be bringing the show back, just as Russell predicted. As ever, time will tell.”

    • War Chief.

So….the Children of Earth will eventually bring back Dr Who….!

    • FH

      June 11th, 2026 - 4:50pm

I think y’all are being way too optimistic implying it’ll be back 2027/2028. The reason there’s so much ‘negativity’ is because the show is now officially in essentially the same place as it was in 1989: not cancelled, but it’s off the air with no commitment as to when it’ll come back. The only difference this time is that the BBC has put it ‘out to tender’ which, while can be seen as a hope, such a thing is usually done as a last resort. It’s a whole other beast than simply waiting on a new production team. They’re looking for an outside company willing to adopt a massive, expensive and currently controversial brand at it’s lowest point to essentially start the show again from scratch (in terms of the production side of it, not necessarily the story). It’s simply a way of keeping the show alive by offloading risk, not a sign of smooth sailing. Until a production company actually steps up, the show is effectively back in the Wilderness Years.
