Character Building Super Rare’s Series 1

Character Building – The Hunt Is On

The hunt is on for rare and super rare Doctor Who construction figures Character Options, maker of the new Character Building Doctor Who construction toy range has confirmed rumour that special rare and super rare figures have been included in the first wave of micro-figures that hit stores last week.

Character Building’s Doctor Who construction micro-figures launched at Easter, simultaneously with the new series. The Series 1 micro-figures was initially thought to have just ten different detailed characters including The Doctor, Amy Pond and many of his most feared foes. However, in an intriguing twist, befitting of the Time Lord, it has now been revealed that five additional figures have been included in the series, and so few have been produced they can truly considered to be Super Rare!

What to look out for…

Out of millions of figures available, there are just 1 in every 1000 of the Projected Weeping Angel and the Raggedy Doctor as he appeared in his Series 5 Episode 1. But most sought after all will be Amy Pond in a Green Coat, the mysterious Silurian Alaya and The Eleventh Doctor in his Kings Arms Football Kit with only 1 in every 5000 being these highly collectable pieces.

Mark Hunt, Character Options, product manager commented: “Word is being put out on the net that these figures are in the bags, and keen collectors are eagerly seeking them. Where they will turn up is a complete lottery but it has certainly created a frenzy amongst the fans!”

The certificate you will get with a super rare…

    CB’s reply ro my email…
    Dear Mr P
Thank you for your email concerning our new Character Building figures.
It is of course disappointing to learn that you are not happy with the super rare figures we have introduced into this range.
At Character Options we aim to create customer satisfaction with all our products and so would like to address your concerns about this new collection.
The super rare figures and foil bag figures are sold using a common method for collectables…

…Many many brands adopt this method in order to encourage collectability and excitement for the consumer when opening the bag and finding out what is inside.
This method also encourages social interaction between children as they swap figures in order to complete their own collections.
Your comments will be noted and passed onto the relevant personnel for any future considerations on this matter.
Once again, please accept my apologies for the upset caused to your family.

Basically hiding behind “All the other evil toy companies do it, so that makes it okay”. I particularly like the comment about encouraging social interaction between children “as they swap figures in order to complete their own collections”. No mention of how these children came accross multiple copies of the super-rares

Most toy companies who do this though are from toy ranges which are simply toy ranges, rather than based off of something like a TV Show and they are expecting an identical reaction from the people that buy it. It’s rather foolish of them.

Or you could accuse them of false advertising as every packet says “10 to collect” when there is clearly 15.

I agree that this looks like commercial exploitation from Character Building, bit of a shame really. It’s tough enough with ‘moderately rare’ but super-rare just puts the collection into the realms of the super-rich and out of the reach of those who just want to collect and PLAY. Toy = play.

Anyways, rant over: I have an unopened Daily Mirror Doctor from Saturday, would like to swap for a red and a blue Dalek (I just like the Daleks and *playing* with them). Hope that doesn’t sound unreasonable.

Mail me at daveleese at rocketmail…

That’s daveleese at rocketmail.com for those interested in swapping a Daily Mirror Doctor for a red and blue Dalek… or if you think that’s unreasonable, how about a red OR blue dalek?

…how many misguided souls will still be purchasing packets long after the hundredth figure has been found. This kind of cynical exploitation is not what I want to think of when I think of Doctor Who.

My little lad now has a set of all ten figures plus the three Daily Mirror exclusives. And now I’ve had to explain to him the likelihood of him ever finding all five rare/super rares. CB shouldn’t be allowed to advertise these figures as “collectible” unless there is a realistic chance of completing a collection. As someone pointed out earlier, these are meant to be toys, for kids. How many kids can afford £80-£90 for a toy figure that originally cost £1.99? And, since we will never know when all the rare/super rares are accounted for,…

I think personally that the Doctor in the kings arms football kit is not a big thing he only wore it in the Lodger for fithteen minitues. I like the idea of rare figures yes but maybe figures of classic doctors or other big characters.

I would rather they didn’t do the “super rare” figures at all so that everyone gets a fair chance to get every figure in the range.

I agree, although this is probably the first “Sunday Footballer” action figure ever, and appealed to me a bit more. May have to wait for an Eleventh Doctor in Football Kit with Jacket figure…

That is just plain evil, its already hard to find rarer ones such as doctor with blue shirt and blue dalek becuase they are the same sculpts are really common ones, to be fair they should have which figures they are on the packets, yeah they may not sell as many but do they not feel bad inside its horrible what they’re doing… they can make up for it by giving me one of each rare 🙂 muahahaha

A common theme of comments is the frustration that these Super-Rare figures deny collectors a complete set. Face it I am on this site today because I am totally exited by this set and intended at the start to collect every figure.

I am cheesed-off at just how few Super-Rare figures there will be, but equally I am enjoying the line so much already I can live without these figures.

This isn’t stopping me thinking “maybe…” and buying one more blind-packed Doctor just in case a Footballing Doctor pops out.

For me, I am quite excited to see how many of these figures make it on to eBay. Some will be opened by collectors who will keep them at all costs. With the aid of the in-pack leaflet, some will realise the potential value and eBay it. Then we will get to see what some lunatic is willing to pay.

Let’s consider some 6 year old probably opened one yesterday, disappointed it wasn’t a Cyberman or a Dalek, and by the end of the week the figure will be doing time in the washing machine having been left in a pair of jeans.

      These are toys.

Pretty happy with that! All great figures, I love them all – especially the Daleks!

So effectively only 100 people will ever have a complete set. Why start a collection you may never complete? It’s Playmates Star Trek Next Gen Action Figure ill-advised 1701 series all over again, and that, to all intents and purposes, killed that line of figures

    • tardistik

      May 7th, 2011 - 4:29pm

because they’re a really great, detailed, collectable set and theres always a small chance 1 of those 100 set completers could be you

    • DavidP

      May 7th, 2011 - 10:52pm

Not disputing the greatness or detail. The thing I find disheartening is the fact that I have to pin my hopes on “Winning the Lottery” five times in a row or throw myself on the mercy of the eBay profiteers (who are already stockpiling the free Daily Mirror figures and charging £8.00 for them!)

    • swift999

      May 8th, 2011 - 6:59am

I remember the Star Trek collectors up in arms when Playmates announced the 1701 limited editions. I think the difference then was that that line was already dependent on the “hard-core” collectors to carry the line.

At this stage, CB Dr Who will be carried by more casual customers, kids that want to play with this stuff and I am sure are less concerned they may only get a selection of figures.

Finally, Playmates listened to an extent to collectors and rereleased the three 1701 figures as a box set.

Sorry to burst your bubbles but the lego games only concentrate on movie serials with 3 to 4 movies and doctor who is a tv series. Not meaning to be johnney raincloud.

    • D0ct0r11

      May 6th, 2011 - 8:13pm

But the game could easily tell the story of Series 5, or Series 6, just like how the “Star Wars” Lego games tell the story of the first three movies, and then the last three movies.

IF there are “millions” of figures, then the ratios and amounts don’t add up. Going by those it would be half a million figures in the series.

Yeah, that doesn’t make sense. 100 times 5000 gives 500,000. That’s crazy. Whoever’d buy these would buy two or three, at least. Are CO only expecting 250,000 people to be really interested in these? Low expectations, that’s for sure.

Probablly with slight differences so they are keeping to their original promise, like making Amy’s coat the right colour for example.

Is this person from CO aware this “frenzy” is a result of anger towards CO rather than excitement towards the figures? Because that is certainly what it seems like.
