September 8th, 2026 - 11:58amSo have we all resigned are self’s to the fact that there isn’t going to be another season boxset this year ?
If they are only going to release one season a year from now on , it will take until 2033, by which time I will be 70 ! Maybe season 1 could be released last on it’s 70th anniversary. By which time Marco Polo could have been recovered or recreated by either animation or AI. I have seen some really good AI on YouTube of Fury From the Deep and Dalek Masterplan . So AI could play a positive part to play in future releases.
Hopefully we will get more missing episodes to fill in the gaps.

September 8th, 2026 - 12:52pmThere would be riots. No matter much certain people push it for some peole there is (quite rightly in my opinion) a zero tolerance attitude towards AI. We’ve seen the mess it got the last few sets into.
You get a poor quality product with no sense of artistic taste putting people out of a job.

September 8th, 2026 - 3:24pmUsing ai to create performances in an ultra realistic appearance is a very diferent can of worms to using ai on the restoration. I’m not 100 percent sure on all the legal facts but It’s a way more grey area legally and copyrightable than traditional human made animation especially as it’s a commercial release. Simply put AI-gen animations can’t be copyrighted if they are made completely by ai without substantial human creative input. For that reason alone I doubt bbc studios will head down that route baring a change in the law. The legal clearances from various estates alone for it would be an enormous headache before they even start. If just one person or estate says no to it then it’s pretty much doomed

September 8th, 2026 - 4:07pmI believe it would be very difficult to do a 100% accurate AI reconstruction of a who story. Several reasons. Costs, it would be phenomenally expensive. What someone can do at home for nothing on a small scale will not translate to a commercial release. Just look at Levine’s appalling efforts. Wheel is good but nowhere near a commercial release. The biggest factor at the moment though may be legal. Many actors and actor unions are against AI simply as it is essentially regarded as image/identity theft. Every actor/actors estate in a production would, as Gordon says, have to clear the use of their image. If an actor or their estate can’t be contacted then the project is no go. You can’t use the soundtrack with a different person’s image as that would also be an issue. The current animations are different, they have been cleared as an interpretation of the original material. AI would not be an interpretation but a recreation of real people both living and dead. That is a legal minefield at this time.

If the extra time before the next release is, as many suspect, a course-correction from the overuse of AI in the last couple of releases, then it does not mean that the other sets would be similarly delayed, because they have already made the changes or know what work needs to be done to correct.

The Blu-ray release of “Doctor Who: The Key to Time” is scheduled for October 29, 2026. This box set includes six linked stories from the 16th season of Doctor Who, along with various extras. You can find it available for purchase on platforms like Amazon.
Now after seen this I searched on Amazon it just comes up the DVD Box Set for both the UK and USA. But if so we might get an announcement sometime this week I do hope this is true and finally it will complete Tom Baker on these sets. With just 11 to go.

September 7th, 2026 - 1:16amOctober 29th is on a Thursday, not entirely sure that’s accurate for a release day as usually all the other sets have been released on a Monday. October 26th is on a Monday though, so maybe a mix up? Or maybe it could be an announcement trailer on Thursday 29th of October, as most of the Collection announcements have been made on Thursdays, but then why plan so far ahead to make an announcement? Or it could be false rumours. Hopefully we get something before the end of this year.

But there is still time though guys if I remember rightly Season 21 didn’t get announced until January this year and that came out in March. So there is still time for a late announcement for late November or early December.

Thirdly Pete mctighe has said the remaining 60 seasons are being left till last.
He also said that it hasn’t been given the go ahead yet but 2005 onwards sets are in the works

Since there is really no one left from that story to do a doc, apart from Frazer and Wendy and my fellow Bradford lad George Layton. They could easily do a Peter Bryant tribute as well, as it was his last credited story .

September 7th, 2026 - 7:34pmCome to clarify things as more info has come to light as well as weirdly some false reporting from someone who allegedly went.
Mark hardy did say he was recording an interview for a kroll making of but it’s not being recorded for a couple of months which would completely rule out s16 coming out this year.
Pete mctighe said that the 60s sets are being left till last to make them as complete as they can be. That could partly explain why we haven’t had something else instead as the only other options are 11 and a wilderness years set and as the tv movie is just out is way too soon for the latter and the former might need more time do to restoration and hopefully new fx.
The Brian Hodgson contribution that he has recorded is him talking about Verity Lambert and the release is due “early next year”. That pretty much narrows it down to season 1,3 or stand alone releases of Marco Polo, the crusade and mission to the unknown. Putting my speculation cap on and eliminating the 2 season sets as they aren’t as a complete as they are going to be at present a mission to the unknown release with the 2 recovered masterplan eps would be the most likely of the three

September 7th, 2026 - 9:55pmThey might go for Season One and rule out a Marco Polo animation as it’s 7 episodes. Waris, Carol Anne and Derren would be able to contribute. Derren is still very active in his 90s and has a book he has written about his life due to come out this autumn. He does have a few stories about Marco Polo, one about the monkey escaping up the studio gantry and chucking it’s poo at the cast and crew below.

September 8th, 2026 - 3:18amThey did evil which was also 7 eps including the surviving ep though Marco is far more complex. I’m not ruling out the possibility that plans may have changed from s16 next but I’d have thought they would maybe hold off on season 1 incase there was a recovery even if the decision to skip a Marco animation was made.
I’m pretty sure they will film and bank material even if it’s not out soon. Paul Vanezis said he’s got stuff banked for pretty much every remaing season and Chris chapman has about 18 documentaries in various states (mostly doctor who related but not all of them)

September 5th, 2026 - 5:43pmAgreed I don’t think there will be another Collection Set this year but I believe we might get the Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and the Jodie Whittaker in the U.K. Might not be released at the same time probably over a couple of months apart. I was in my local Top Dog shop in town this afternoon I was shocked to see they didn’t have the full range of Doctor Who on DVD a member of staff said some of the back catalogue of titles on DVD that has been around for 10-20 years are now been deleted and what you will find on their website online once stock is gone it will be removed. I don’t know if this is true but if you check on Amazon a lot of the titles have gone also. So maybe just like the VHS range the DVD is going the same way. So.if your thinking of selling your old DVDs best wait until they disappear then sell them as they will become rare to.find. That’s if it’s true that the back catalogue is been deleted.

Lots have no problem getting the Ai not to be noticed.
And other fans struggle and are more vocal.
When others have fixed there settings and you dont get the motion blur of faces.
But the more vocal fans wont ever ecept it as they know better.

Which is getting confused by the already treated ai restorAtion.
And because it cant cope you end up with blur.
TURN OFF the setting and come back.
It works fine here on HD TV and none 4k bluray.

If it doesn’t meet the standard then so be it, let the range end, people shouldn’t be expected to buy products they consider subpar, the fans don’t owe anyone anything.

There is nothing wrong with my settings on my tv. If there was the film sequences in season 21 wouldn’t have looked great

I’ve no idea what this blur thing the poster with three usernames and no apostrophe key is on about though, but it sounds like they’re taking part in a different conversation? It’s great that they’ve solved whatever blur problem they had, but I’m at a loss as to how that relates to AI-generated fake detail…

September 2nd, 2026 - 12:12pmYikes Gordon – looking at that youtube video the AI on S21 is awful (I thought that when watching it). Actors are caked in makeup, notably Colin Baker… I wonder if the AI assumed that means they should have plastic looking faces with no visible pours/wrinkles etc?

I wished they’d used a slight AI upscale on season 17. Only slight. I personally thought City of Death looked un restored, it wasn’t much different from the dvd other than the blu ray made the grain bits look more grainy.
AI definitely has its uses but I agree on season 13’s over use of it.
And for the record, it has nothing to do with tv settings!

These discs are packed with bonus features produced and compiled by humans, for consumption by humans, largely about humans, but the entire set is worthless because some aspects involved the use of AI? There are good uses for AI out there. I’d focus on the bad ones if I were you—Doctor Who Blu-rays aren’t it.

August 27th, 2026 - 1:58pmI would guess at end of September or early October for this one. Then I think we might get those 11th12th and 13th USA sets for the UK by the end of the year. The Collection Sets I expected these to slow down as they near the end I still don’t know what they going to do with the 60s sets 1&6 are still possible. This year has reminded me of 1996 when the VHS range was suspended because of the the T.V Movie and were hopes of a new series. And many of the back catalogue of vhs releases were deleted including the recent release of The Hand Of Fear. So before than we were getting at least two stories each month. Then 1996 we only got The Hand Of Fear which i mentioned was deleted just a few months after than was The Movie, and because of the passing of Jon Pertwee they released The Green Death in memory of the Third Doctor. So yeah this year has been very slow so we have had The Collection Season 21, The Movie 30th Anniversary, The Black Archives, then The Collection Season 25 Standard. So for me 2026 has been like 1996 very much in suspended mode at the moment.

Behind the scenes they might well be looking at the use of AI on future sets causing the delay of Season 16 or that the rumours of 1 set per year are true so ultimately they have longer to work on the 60’s sets.
I suspect the UK market will also get repackaged 11th/12th/13th Doctor sets soon like the USA. With an animation and Season 16 following.

Considering the packaging has been consistent since the range started I’m not sure it’s that unless it’s at the manufacturing side which isn’t usually done till late on and usually isnt started till after its anounced. Wouldn’t rule that out as a possibility though

Think people are getting mixed up with season 17 which was announced 7th October and released 20th December but considering that was during Covid I’m not sure the same rules apply here

August 27th, 2026 - 3:21pmGordon: If you don’t have your TV on Filmmaker Mode with the correct upscaling player then you shouldn’t be surprised that teeth go Hollywood, nails are well manicured and aged paving slabs become perfectly laid on Android Invasion. You need the correct setup to restore the organic reality captured on tape, the kind of player that James Cameron tests his 4K remasters on – although that seems to be a one-off, like the TV he had to test the Aliens LaserDisc on (if you haven’t read it, you really should…).
Don’t take “rich” seriously though, it’s a Richard Bignall parody account. Someone posts about Mr Bignall being rude and not understanding what’s AI or not, and he makes a post that’s rude and can’t tell what’s AI or not – there’s a reply to Babelbro on a Collection page that’s really funny.

Evidently you decided not to watch the comparison video in the YouTube link I posted, 20 minutes prior to your post suggesting Gordon somehow isn’t using the ‘correct’ tv + player settings.
The comparison video I’ve included highlights *precisely* what is wrong with these Collection Blu-ray sets. Peter Crocker and the Restoration Team are applying heavy generative Ai onto the digitised masters using Topaz Ai.
Writing on walls once clearly readable on the dvds and vhs tapes is now turned to mush on the Blu-rays. Actors appear to be growing extra teeth, hair turning to plasticine, actor’s eyes being replaced entirely in distance shots.
None of this is down to Gordon’s tv or media player settings whatsoever.
In fact, anyone could be using the absolute worst tv and media player settings as possible, and it would not match the disaster that is heavy Ai, heavy DNR, severe digital revisionisms applied by choice on these Blu-rays by Peter Crocker and the restoration team.
If you, Rich, DeliveryRus and anyone else prefers the Blu-rays despite all of those drawbacks, that’s absolutely your preference, and of course there’s many on the internet that are fully aware of the drawbacks, but still prefer the look of the Blu-rays no matter what. It’s personal taste at the end of the day;
But to get snarky / trolling at guys like Gordon and plenty of other fans that pay their hard earned money on these sets and give a perfectly entitled, constructive, informative, detailed technical review and critique of the sets isn’t “really funny” it’s sore loser behaviour.
Richard Bignell made himself a butt joke on Twitter for a reason, because he threw his toys out the pram the milisecond Matthew Purchase shared screenshots of the Season 13 Blu-ray showing the mess caused by Ai. It’s like the very people in charge cannot hack it and cannot take the heat when their sh1t gets called out.
But that’s fine because we’re gonna keep going 🙂

(The James Cameron clue should really have removed any subtlety…) And you know from previous discussions that I stopped buying the sets because of fiddling, before most other people even – Season Two was too processed for me and I sold it.

August 28th, 2026 - 3:59pmTbh unless you leave a or a emoji then there’s zero distinction between what you had intended to be sarcasm versus what the pro-ai-blu-ray brigade type back in all seriousness.
What’s worse is that review channels on YouTube are paid a lot of money to say very nice things about ai physical releases like the Doctor Who Collection. Just about every review of Seasons 13 + 21 conveniently avoided actually watching the main feature episodes.
“The Doctor Who Guide” channel for example, also did an unboxing for a recent collection limited edition – the disc tray glue was total cr@p, so the tray ripped away from the rear internal artwork, causing the discs and tray to completely fall out and land with a thud on the table on camera. Instead of editing it or express any disappointment that any one of the discs could’ve been busted, he literally gives the least fussed, if cheery “Oh well, anyway” as if it’s fine for a £50 – £60 set to be collapsing in on itself.
