Big Finish The Diary of River Song Volume 9 New Recruit

Available to order from www.bigfinish.com

UNIT – the secret organisation established to deal with the odd and unexplained on Earth and beyond.

The redoubtable Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart leads the troops, and for scientific guidance relies on two brilliant advisors: Cambridge genius Dr Elizabeth Shaw, and UNIT’s newest recruit – that mysterious traveller in time and space known as… River Song.

9.1 The Blood Woods by Lizbeth Myles

With the Doctor indisposed, Liz is a little put out to find that the Brigadier has brought in another scientific advisor to take his place.

But when Liz and River investigate otherworldly goings-on in an English village, they soon find themselves relying on each other to survive.

9.2 Terror of the Suburbs by James Kettle

Liz has moved house. It seems she’s found a suburban utopia – until River Song arrives.

There is more to Fetter Bailey than manicured lawns and endless soirees. Dangerous creatures prowl the hedgerows, and something lurks in the freezers…

9.3 Never Alone by Helen Goldwyn

River believes Intertraxia is ahead of its time, but it’s already shipping innovations in entertainment and computing around the world.

When a dead man is found dead with alien technology implants, UNIT investigates. Liz and River are about to discover that those connected to the network are never alone…

9.4 Rivers of Light by Lisa McMullin

In a Yorkshire mining town, strange temporal distortions and rivers of light crossing forests are enough to get the Brigadier’s attention, and UNIT is mobilised.

But the Doctor is back, and he wants to know who’s been messing around in his laboratory. River’s reasons for being on Earth are about to be revealed…

I think they should very much cool it down with putting the Brigadier in every other release, I understand the novelty for fans of his, but even putting my lukewarm feelings towards the character aside, I think it’s getting disrespectful to Nicholas Courtney that Jon Culshaw seems to have become a permanent replacement to him across all these ranges

Sadly, I’m starting to find the BF releases too contrived and too many ranges. Jenny, War Doctor Begins, War Master, Christina, River Song, Missy – now Martha. It’s too much.

You don’t have to get it all, big finish has so many ranges so that there is always a series/range for everyone

“…there is always a series/range for everyone”. Literally.

River Song is a character I could quite happily never see or hear from ever again.
The further adventures of Tegan would be more interesting what happened to her? Did she regret leaving the Doctor? What did she think when all the Daleks turned up years later and stole the Earth? Did the cut on her head last time we saw her heal up okay or has she got a little scar you can see under certain lighting?

Yeah, I don’t really find River Song interesting. I’ve heard that her Big Finish is basically just “River meets (insert past Doctor/companion here)”

Yes that’s what I thought they might be just stick her with a different Doctor, thats got to get dull quickly.
Also I didn’t know we already had something of the future Tegan I will look into that one 🙂
It’s nice to know what happened to some classic companions especially they often just walked away from the Doctor in the past without a big story for them.

Actually, the River series has been pretty great!
You’re commenting on a series you haven’t even listened to?

As for Tegan, yeah, The Gathering came out almost 15 years ago and was really good, too, although a bit bleak. Let’s just say that it’s not a happy reunion, since she’s pretty bitter about her time with the Doctor. – and with good reason.

On a different note, Russell T Davies revealed that Tegan and Nyssa became a couple (or at least Rani thinks they’re a couple when she meets them at Sarah Jane’s funeral) in the web story “Farewell, Sarah Jane”, which also had older Jo and Ace in it.

Russell also revealed what happened to a bunch of the Earth-based companions in the Sarah Jane Adventures story “Death of the Doctor”, which also featured Jo. It’s in dialogue, so it happened off-camera. Ace was supposed to appear in the Sarah Jane Adventures, but the series was canceled before they could film it after Lis Sladen’s untimely passing.

This is pushing it a little bit in regards to things retroactively happening in the timeline of the show and just weren’t mentioned for some reason or any inkling given that they actually happened by Liz or the Brigadier in the 3rd doctors run.
