I have HUNDREDS of Doctor Who books. I’m currently trying to finish off the Virgin Target reprints from the early 90’s – there was 74 reprints with nice, newer artwork to them and I have about forty from that series now. Some can be quite pricey

    I own
    The Robots Of Death
    The Sea Devils
    The Curse Of Peladon (Hardback)
    The Invasion Of Time (Hardback)

    Are any of these rare?

My only complaint is that the virgin reprints are far too rare, that being said I am very proud to own the reprinted and therefore superior copies of:

    The Cave Monsters
    The Monster of Peladon
    The Awakening
    Attack of the Cybermen
    Vengeance on Varos
    Silver Nemesis

And am hoping to get Twin Dilemma reprint along with Genesis of the Daleks’s.

I have 36 Target novelisations and have read 29 of them. I also have all twelve BBC Books reprints and the rare hardcover edition of Doctor Who and the Ribos Operation.

He only had the gun for about 5 seconds, then he gets K.O (knocked over) by the arriving Cybermen.

While it looks good, it isn’t appropriate for the Doctor he doesn’t use guns (atleast not to kill) guns are NOT his thing. He’s not an action hero he’s an adventuring Timelord who solves world-threatening problems in time, and space. ❗

I have about 10 of the original books, they are OK, but I prefer the New Series Adventures

Any missing adventures ? I want TIME OF YOUR LIFE because it’s based after Trial of a Timelord for the Doctor. And Millenial Rites, Goth Opera (which involves the 5th Doctor, Sabalom Glitz, Romana aswell as Vampires ! 😯 )

In Business Unusual Melaine Bush meets him for the very first time, I didn’t get into it enough and just read the end.

The new adventure Parallel 59 is good, I like it so far, and I had a flick through the other 8th Doctor story “Slow Empire” before I wrapped it up and gave it to my uncle. 😉

Brought up on Target novelisations, I was then actually quite disappointed with some of the 1960s and 1970s stories when I first saw them on video. Case in point was the marvellous “The Auton Invasion.” I far preferred the book until recently, when watching the Mannequin Mania version, I realised just how superb Spearhead from Space was.

Still, I look back on nearly 30 years of collecting and the Target logo and those immortal words “Doctor Who and…” are as that as key to fandom as the diamond and neon logo themselves…

I remember it was so difficult and costly to get some of the Target books in the early 90s – was certainly very costly to get Fury from the Deep, Macra Terror, The Rescue and Highlanders – now they struggle to make a quid or two on ebay….whereas the hardback library versions which were sold in book sales for 10p in the 1980s can now make £100 or more. I think Wheel in Space still remains the most elusive target book due to its limited number.

It is bizarre what becomes rare. In 1989 I walked into the then bookshop Athena in Leicester Square in London, and they had brand new copies of Doctor Who hardbacks for £1.49. I was only able to buy 9, and it was such a difficult choice as there were about 30 different ones and multiple copies of each.

In the last few years they have become very difficult, and I often wonder if I will complete the set, as I have a limit of £20 for a good hardback. I also take the view that I would rather have a copy in poor condition than none at all.

booboo – how long can I make my list? ha ha. I lost all my ex-library hardback books in a flood at our house along with all but 6 of my entire VHS collection in 2006. I try not to look on ebay but when I saw an ex-library Seeds of Doom go for £700 last year (one of the ones I owned) I turned slightly greyer.

      March 20th, 2012 - 9:26pm

yes i have just looked, there are 24 hardbacks but they are ex library and most are in terrible condition to be honest with only a couple of decent ones

      March 20th, 2012 - 9:42pm

I think you have got quite a good collection of hardbacks. You have three of the rarest (Rescue, Underwater and Wheel). I managed to get these 3 in the last 2 years. Just when I was giving up, I found perfect copies of Wheel and Underwater for £2 each. You can imagine how that made my month. I stopped buying them on AmazonMarketplace because sellers often mis-describe them.

I have now not seen one outside of a Who-related shop for best part of 2 years. Most collectors are holding on to them.

Actually Davison’s Dr takes a Gun on at least 3 occassions that I can think of (Of which one is INSIDE the TARDIS) and Colin Baker’s Dr takes on on at least one occassion, so its not that unusual to see the Dr with a gun but it is usually a last resort…

When i watched him point a gun at Davros, i didn’t really like it. The Doctor hates guns. But i guess it was necessary. The 9th Doctor had an excuse, he was born out of the Last great Time war. But i would rather he be a man who would “never would”-Quote from the Doctors Daughter, unless he was held to his extremes (which is quite often).
