Leap of Eighth The Unofficial / Unauthorised History of the 8th Doctor

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk or www.telos.co.uk

‘You held back death.’

In 1996 an American-made Doctor Who television film burst on the scene, starring the charismatic English actor Paul McGann as the Doctor, and fandom embraced him.

While there was at the time no more of Paul’s performance on screen, his Doctor transitioned to other media with ease: comics, books and finally audio, bringing a wealth of stories, adventures, companions and more to Doctor Who lore.

This book chronicles the creation and development of those media. Through interviews with more than fifty of the creators, and McGann himself, Reecy Pontiff picks a path through the so-called ‘Wilderness Years’, to emerge from the other side with literally hundreds of new adventures and stories to enjoy, all featuring the eighth Doctor.

It truly was … A Leap of Eighth!

Well… Hugh Grant played the part of the Doctor in Curse of Fatal Death (you can find it on YouTube), so….

I thought Curse of Fatal Death was too frivolous, mocking my favourite Sci fi show….and I’m a very frivolous person…..

I deny that….! I may criticise certain aspects of the show…..or some of its producers….but never the show itself….
In the 1990s there was a deplorable tendency for people to sneer at Dr Who…..no one really expected it to return….Even Peter Davison was guilty of this….
But i was still happily buying the books and videos that came out…..

    • Rory, the original you might say

I’ve been a fan as long as I can remember, and consumed Who in every shape during the wilderness years, but I’m also happy to make fun of it when I feel it’s deserved. Even the best Who can have mockable moments, from duff lines to shonky sets.

There’s a difference between affectionate jabs and outright condescension. I hope that when I’m snarky about something then it’s seen as the former. If I didn’t love it then I wouldn’t still be here after 40+ years.
