Both 12 and 19 delivered. Its what i expected being just standard packaging. It does have its pros and cons. It doesn,t say season 12 and 19 on the front of the inner casing just on the side. On the plus side it does seem to have all the content, it is more compact, takes up less space and isn,t prone to the fragile wear and tear of the cardboard.
If these two sets are monthly then with any luck we should get season 24 by october. fingers crossed,.

I looked at comparison video’s on YouTube and although it is great for those who have not got the Ltd versions, I’m so glad I don’t need them.

The booklet only having on average 1 page per story is obviously lacking a great deal of information and artwork. Smaller and missing artwork from the main box and the Console Room picture hidden due to the discs is also a shame.

The Blu Ray blue banner on the cardboard box really spoils it too.

But yeah, the ergon, you might have them all by Christmas. I’m hoping the Series 9 and 10/TUAT Steelbooks will be out by then too.

Just to be clear i did own all the limited editions to date but sold them off as soon as i knew these were coming. I do miss the artwork a little and the information is lacking but as i say they take just a fraction of the room and i don,t have to be as careful when taking the discs or booklets out. I did save some of the DVDs due to some of the trims and the disappointing upgrades on certain scenes, especially on the ones shot on film which were sometimes not as clear and the tracking shots were blurry. I think they may hit the same problems when upgrading stories like The Silurians, Inferno and Dinosaurs.
However I would like to see the collection through to the 2005 series to present.

Huh, looks like the inner art of the TARDIS (booklet container) and the Doctor’s face hasn’t been ported over to these versions, behind the discs is an image of the 3D console room

I love the elegant TARDIS (booklet container) artwork, but probably quite right it should be restricted to the Limited Edition versions. All the Standard Edition discs are identical in content to the Limited Editions, right down to the missing updated CGI shot in Part Two of Revenge of the Cybermen.

I sold all my DVD’s in early 2020 at CEX as they will never be watched again. Even as I wait for more Seasons to be released.

The money made per Season helps towards the BR sets although I know CEX don’t offer as much now.

Kept the booklets though and trimmed them to fit in the BR box.

I’ll be selling my DVDs once I have all the Blu-rays. These seem like the definitive releases to me, so I don’t see the point in keeping them in multiple formats. It’s just more clutter in the house, and I don’t have unlimited storage space.

I started buying the DW VHS from when the very first ones were released, but I haven’t owned a VHS player for over 10 years, so got rid of all my VHS tapes (except for a couple of limited edition boxsets) a long time ago.

The only thing about the DVDs that I do prefer is that each story has its own separate release and booklet. The season boxes work better for the modern series, but for the old multi-episode stories l actually prefer them all in their own separate releases. It’s not enough for me to keep onto them though. The Blu-rays will be the only ones I keep when they’re all out. I’ll probably just keep the booklets from the DVDs.

Yes, i keep DVDs when I buy BluRay.
It’s part of your collection really.

I don’t like parting with anything really.

I understand space is an issue for most people, so I understand people’s reason for parting with merchandise. But it’s not for me.

      April 25th, 2021 - 4:58pm

I place the DVDs up in the attic, in some cases I have given DVDs away to friends when I have upgraded DVD.

I sometimes feel sentimental but the DVD never gets watched again once I have the blu ray.

With Doctor Who, friends are also getting the blu rays so no point giving them DVDs. I gave a Superman boxset to a friend when I got the blu ray edition as everything was included. I feel sentimental as it was a Christmas present 15 years ago but space is a premium. I prefer giving to friends as you don’t get anything for DVDs.

    • Gordon

      April 26th, 2021 - 12:25am

I got my who DVDs still. But considering how much non stuff I’m currently buying alongside the collection and animation ranges there probably will be a decision I will need to make in the next year or so. I don’t have infinitive space sadly.

    • Neill Stringer

      April 26th, 2021 - 4:20pm

I am moving DVDs into the attic as I buy the box sets.

These days the only DVDs I watch are the ones not upgraded to blu ray.

Once you see TNG on blu ray, you can’t go back as the remastering is beautiful, but the sad thing is its looking like DS9 and Voyager will not be remastered, so those shows I stick with DVD. It’s how I am doing Who. Other formats take up space and they do become a paperweight and take up space, but everything is ported over.

I kee my Star Trek The Motion Picture DVD with the films on blu ray, simply because Paramount does not seem to be pushing for a 4K HD version of the Director’s Cut, which is only ab=vaulable on a DVD you cannot get now.

    • Neill Stringer

I kept my Star Trek The Motion Picture DVD with the films on blu ray, simply because Paramount does not seem to be pushing for a 4K HD version of the Director’s Cut, which is only available on a DVD you cannot get now.

      April 27th, 2021 - 11:39pm

I kept the sleeve inserts from VHS for the art, put the dvds in the loft and have the blu rays out. I can wait a bit to watch the episodes on bluray, I’ll have forgotten some of the details by the time the collections come out. I also have star trek the motion picture director’s cut on dvd because they didn’t bother to do a bluray. Dr who, star trek and bond have been bought on VHS, dvd, bluray and will no doubt be upgraded again as technology moves on. Long live physical media.

This is great news. I sold all of my limited edition boxsets as i was fed up of the mad scrabble and silly prices if you missed one. I’m not going to pre-order these as the only way I will buy is if they are made commercially available all the time. For me this will mean they sit in shops available anytime and no pre-ordering and mad scrabbling required (basically like the old DVD availability). If this is the case I will start buying them.

Will these be available in Australia? I wasn’t initially going to get these (I vividly remember picking up the limited edition of Season 12 instores and decided against it as I have the DVD range) but now that I see how much restoration the team are doing and how much better the aspect ratio is on a 4K TV I’m tempted to get these.

Only releases that had issues was 12, 19,18 and for a small percentage of buyers season 8. Seasons 10,23 and 26 and 14 had nothing wrong with them. Saying every release had something wrong is a bit of an exaggeration. As far as I’m aware none of the discs had wrong disc content on it.

Now this is good to see! Never was a fan of the flimsy cardboard limited edition packaging tbh! It’s the one thing that let’s the boxsets down for me. Plus, the disc trays on two of my boxsets has already come unglued.

I’ll probably start buying these releases instead, especially as they’re still including the booklet! Good move from the Beeb.

    • Lee B

      March 25th, 2021 - 3:04pm

Cutdown as in what though? Less info? Smaller size? I’m not too bothered about that tbh. So long as it isn’t just a pathetic single sheet of paper, like the ones that come with some BBC releases, it’s all good with me!

I’ve never been a fan of the cardboard packaging on the limited edition boxes. It just always felt like the only thing that let these boxsets down for me. Too easy to get damaged.

    • Auton

      March 25th, 2021 - 3:21pm

  • Haza14

    March 24th, 2021 - 1:33pm

Oh wow, these leave me with a dilemma! While great for people who missed out, and a way to possibly reduce number of sets that go to scalpers initially, I wish they had given the standard option from the start, or at least stated it was coming (although I guess they did always say that only the packaging was limited)! I don’t think prices of the limited edition sets on eBay will come down much as collectors will still want them.

The limited edition packaging is lovely! But also it’s quite flimsy and I worry that in a few years all the plastic trays will be loose in some sets! So these standard editions might be a better bet for longevity.

Ultimately I think the inclusion of the full booklets will mean I keep going with the limited editions. But it does make the errors and occasion lack of quality control on the packaging of the limited edition sets even more annoying!

But I display mine with cover facing outwards without the J-card so it will look like one large piece of artwork eventually.

If anything, these versions will be more consistent packaging wise (graphic errors will likely be fixed from previous releases, ratings symbols will all be the same). Seems more streamlined and desirable than the “limited edition packaging” in general, though I have all of those so far – so this has stumped me.

And these might even keep all of Lee Binding’s art on the sleeve of the Blu-ray case. The Doctor Who logo isn’t on the front of the actual case, so the scene with the TARDIS in the vortex or something might be on the back of the case, and the Doctor’s face from the intro and the “booklet holder” TARDIS image might be on the other side of the sleeve, behind the discs. That’s just going off the fact that the Doctor Who logo isn’t on the case

As someone who owns all the collection box sets so far, it’s nice that those who missed out have the opportunity to own all the same content, whilst the original boxsets will still maintain their collectibility. I do wonder if this will stop scalpers, or whether demand for these sets will go up due to rarity though…
