Exclusive interview with Murray Gold!

The latest Doctor Who Magazine features the first interview with Murray Gold since it was announced that the acclaimed composer, who scored Doctor Who from 2005-17, was returning to the series.

“People started saying, ‘We really need to speak to Murray,’” he tells DWM. “There was a director, Mark Tonderai [overseeing the 2023 Christmas Special]. I was like, ‘What can he possibly want?’ And then Ben [Chessell], who’s directing episode two… this was January 26th and he says, ‘I’m directing this episode and it seems to have a lot of music in it. Have you looked at it?’ Then another director. And another. Then it started to dawn on me: ‘There’s an awful lot of music in this series, isn’t there, Murray?’ I was speaking to myself now, not realising, of course, that my consciousness is just a fantasy. ‘And apparently Russell [T Davies] has entrusted all of it to me.’ And actually that’s quite an honour. I love that man.”

Other highlights of the new issue include:

  • A giant-double sided poster.
  • A Big Finish download code for a complete audio adventure.
  • The DWM 60th Anniversary Poll – the analysis of the results continues, with this issue looking at the rankings of the Third and Fourth Doctor’s adventures.
  • Liberation of the Daleks Part Seven – the adventures of the Fourteenth Doctor continue in the epic comic-strip adventure written by Alan Barnes and illustrated by Lee Sullivan.
  • Letter from the Showrunner – Russell T Davies on the casting of new Doctor Who cast member Jinkx Monsoon.
  • Production Diary – script editor Scott Handcock files his latest report, direct from Doctor Who’s HQ.
  • Gallifrey Guardian – all the latest official news, including cast announcements.
  • Scarf Ace – acclaimed artist Dave Gibbons looks back at his work on the Doctor Who comic strip.
  • Secret Service – Jacqui Stonebridge, who was in charge of Doctor Who’s press and publicity at the time of its launch in 1963, recalls her work on the early days of the series.
  • The Running Man – Devante Fleming reveals what it’s like to work as a runner on Ncuti Gatwa’s forthcoming episodes.
  • Writer of the Lost Ark – the life and times of writer John Lucarotti, whose original version of 1975’s The Ark in Space in set for release on audio.
  • 60 Objects, 60 Years – the latest instalment of the series that tells the story of one object from every year of Doctor Who’s history.

I’m going to predict the order of the Sixth Doctor stories in DWM.

    1) Revelation of the Daleks
    2) The Two Doctors
    3) Vengeance on Varos
    4) Attack of the Cybermen
    5) The Trial of a Time Lord
    6) The Mark of the Rani
    7) Timelash
    8) The Twin Dilemma

What do others think? Who will get closest to getting these stories in the right order?

I’d agree with Dan and other comments. It looks likely the first TV special this year will have DT’s 14th Doctor park the Tardis up, burst out of it and get on with rushing headlong into adventure. There *are* one or two little Easter Eggs here and there in this comic strip for the very keen (for example, if you really want to see/know what happens literally after the 13/14 regeneration, see 14 literally stepping from the spot on Durdle Door and into the Tardis etc – and the new instalment, part 7, in this issue, has a small development if you want to see what becomes of a certain bit of recent Who ‘lore’ – in a scene reminiscent of a certain 1980s episode- I’m wording that as carefully as possible to avoid spoilering) – but again, feels like it won’t be essential to have read or known about into follow or enjoy the TV episodes coming up.

I don’t currently buy DWM but take a peek when in store if the magazine isn’t wrapped.

I expect the full comic to be released once it finishes so I’ll most likely buy it then as there won’t be much 14th Doctor merchandise available overall.

No surprises with any of the poll results. I dont think these have changed in decades.

This is where i get off now. Cant vote for the modern Who as i can barely remember much of it. Might give some marks for Jodie stories. I liked the story with the frog, and Rosa, and bits of Flux.

Agree there although there are a few interesting changes as to what is Number 1 so far.

Ive just awarded Paradise Towers and Dragonfire a 10. The eighties were my era, it was hard to score under 7 for any stories from the 80’s to be honest.

Looking forward to awarding a 1 to Lets Kill Hitler and other stories in Series 6, I hate it although I guess loads love it.

A lot of Jodie’s will get high scores from me as her era was brilliant.

But im a fan who counts Dimensions in Time as canon ! was a little bit annoyed it was left out of the scoring.

Wondering how much the cover price works out as a subscriber. It’s starting to sound a bit expensive.

Mind you, still one of the best magazines out there on any subject. Just a bit alarming when the price stares out from the cover at you.

It’s amazing its still going really. Says a lot about the strength of the brand. I’ve not bought a copy since Tennant left. – however, ive just taken the plunge and purchased the new issue and the last one purely because Im interested in seeing the poll results. Once thats all wrapped up, I wont buy again. Looking through these issues, it’s heartwarming to see that people always find something new to write about. I notice the Time Team has gone. That peaked with the Richard/Jacs/Clayton/Peter line up imo. Used to love that !

I am a bit concerned that everything is going backwards. Who always felt like it was forging ahead but since it was announced RTD was returning everything seems to be geared up to trying to bring back to life a certain era.
I get why theyre doing this from a business POV but i suspect the public have moved on, and wont be on board. The huge wait isnt going to help. Time will tell.
Im a bit out of the loop but is it right that you need to read the comic strip to stay up with events in the show ? That seems a bit too much like fans of The Mandalorian having to watch The Book Of Boba Fett to find out how Grogu got back to Mando

@duncan, I think you’re in a minority here. RTD and DT return has only boosted sales for all areas of doctor who- DWM has seen a massive pick up with a couple of months showing tge magazine actually sell out in stores and ebay being used.

David Tennant by official BBC polls shows to generate the most revenue and fan interest.

The thing with the 60th is that we have reached a time in which the DT era is now old enough to be legacy then current. This is no differnt then getting terrance dicks or Robert Holmes back to pen the 10th/20th etc etc. RTD and Co were a stable and very popular era so the 60th looks to be celebrating that era more as those 10 year old are now 26 so even old enough to have their own kids.

I genuinely think these 3 specials will be used to close the door on “RTD1” era and start “RTD2”, best of both worlds

      April 28th, 2023 - 1:17pm

duncan, I would say no you do not NEED to read the comic book at all, its just a nice way of giving the 14th doctor a bit more story ahead of the 60th. There’s nothing in it – football, daleks and a bit of timey wimey star trek easter egg. Ive bought each issue and seen nothing in it that makes “required” reading.

This was just a very good PR stunt on RTD part to boost sales of a declining Magazine, i stopped buying it about 4 years ago as it was just too repetitive. Theres been a real effort by RTD to include monthly content, his letter is always good and the production updates are welcome, the rest is the usual flannel.

Im fairly confident that come November 2023, the 14th doctor will land , step out the tardis wide eyed with “right ok, earth England london, the solar system……2023 I did it!” and there will be 0 reference to the comic or the upcoming short story in the 10th doctor Xmas novel – treat it like the 2005 chilfren in need special, a nice extra but come TV time, you wont miss anything.

This isnt me bashing the comic but honestly, its not required.

Im much more intrigued by the apparent rumour that November 2024 and the final part of big finishes “once and future” with feature the 14th doctor as apposed to the 10th, but time will tell………….it always does

      April 28th, 2023 - 1:39pm

Yes there is a comic strip but no doubt it won’t be needed to get into the 60th specials. Not everyone reads DWM and RTD is very aware of this. It is just something extra for those who do.

Yes it won’t continue directly from durdle door but doesn’t need to really.

I mean it’s similar to when the 9th Doctor turned up in Rose. Or very likely the Doctor will be exploring something new a while after the regeneration and bumps into Donna again (a bit like Partners In Crime).

To be fair to Murray gold, it’s hardly THAT backwards as he only left a few years ago because the entire team was changing. If there wasn’t such a massive table flip of the show after moffafs departure he’d probably still be there. So I don’t count Gold as a step backwards at all
