Thanks for trying, can understand it to be honest, probably reluctant to mention an independent site, we sent a load of stuff in for the Dapol article which they put under Luke’s name.

For me the RTD and Moffat eras were never dull. The central characters, if cast and directed well will always lift the weaker stories – which has been true through every era of the Programme from the beginning. The RTD era definitely had its silly moments particularly at the beginning of Series One and then it found its feet. Noel Clark’s performance of Mickey is a good example of this. The Chibnal era has sadly left me cold. Terrible casting particularly Tosin Cole. Predictable direction which lacked dynamics. Underwhelming and overladen scripts. For me the era has been overall dull and frequently frustrating. I really like Jodie Whittaker. A female doctor was well overdue. However making a programme with a format and premise as exciting and as open as Doctor Who dull has to take some doing. Trying new stuff is the life blood of any creative media but making something badly is a sure fire way to reduce your audience. As many others feel I can’t wait for this era to be over. The specials feel like a plaster being ripped off really slowly. Three series and it hasn’t improved. A greater writer would have met the challenge of filming during the Covid crisis. Sadly Chibnall didn’t. Whatever comes next, even if it has its silly moments, can’t be any worse than the last three series. I will say that Rosa is one of the best episodes of Doctor Who and as a piece of contemporary television but Chibnall didn’t write it. Fugitive is good but borrows heavily from RTD era concepts. But one or two really good episodes in 31 is very poor. No series or era is ever perfect but I feel Chibnall’s era has fallen very short. Which is a shame.

But other than that you really liked what Chibnall has done.

Davies and moffat were not perfect but they provided a great deal of iconic stories and moments, chibnall has not done anything to match their eras at all, very bland and forgettable overall

Moffet’s era either put me to sleep or just irritated at times, if it wasn’t for Clara I would have not cared as much although I’ve warmed to his time more on Blu-Ray and I never hated it I don’t hate any of Doctor Who.
Jodie’s era made it all fun again for me and Jodie was a massive part of that, Chibs may not be as good as RTD or Moffet in terms of the overall writing but it was never dull for me.
Like I always say if you don’t like it just wait three years or so and there will be another one along before you know it.

Really interesting interview with Chibnall. Makes a lot of sense as to why the show has been poor and so poorly received under his stewardship. A show he turned down twice before deciding to do it! Makes you wonder if his heart was really in it?

I had zero respect for Chibnall as a writer and after this interview I have even less. Blaming the writing of other writers he invited to write for Series 11 on his poor script for Av Kolos! He made the decision to not have a series finale (something which had worked really well for every revival series up until then) and so viewers ended up with a lack lustre finish to a series that had been already hit and miss. I would be interested to know what is his excuse for poor scripts such as Tsuranga and Legend of Sea Devils? Blaming others for your poor work is really sad. Personally if the BBC couldn’t find someone to do the job well then I would have rather it wasn’t made. Save the money for other programmes that are well written. Now, when the programme comes back in the Autumn of 2023, it has to not just return and capture audiences attention but to overcome the reputation it has acquired over the past 5 years for being badly written. Aside from Rosa this will be an era I will put to one side and try and pretend never happened.

The thing is I don’t even have any issue with the plots or writing it’s just the performances are so bad from everyone. It’s lost so much of its charm and heart. Where did all our phenomenal actors go?

That’s why for me there are no dire episodes of RTD’s run. Even something like boom town, fear her, love and monsters, evolution of the daleks, sontaran stratagem, doctors daughter etc. I never understand the hate for them as the performances from everyone are just so good.

Whereas even the ‘good’ episodes of this era I can’t rewatch as they’re littered with just painfully bad acting, hard to watch dialogue and cringe worthy performance. That for me this era is just tarnished, regardless of the plots or story or lore

I think your suffering from Rose Tinted Glasses syndrome. There’s some poor acting in all eras of the show.

Stu speaks truth, AT-AT. I’ve never known a Doctor and main companion so free of charisma, and it looks like general audiences agree. As for it all about doing new things, not a good idea to spend so much time on the Master and Cybermen when Moffat did them so much better immediately before this era.

I can’t stand Russell era episodes. The acting is over the top and often at times – cringe. I find the 10th doctor embarrassing at times and that area was so over the top it was silly.

Moffet wasted the Cybermen and made them look rather dull and plastic, Chibs Cybermen look awesome and seem to have a creepy vibe to them again. The 9th Doctor was great but always seemed a little unsuited to the character and Tennant was totally over the top most of the time.
Jodie and Mandip have been great actors and I love them together, the awkwardness of the 13th Doctor and her lack of “hey look at me I’m in the room” that we got from Tennant was nice to see. Although when she needs to be in charge she can do that too.

Looking forward to this issue! Really nice cover! I just hope the Chris Chibnall interview is decently in-depth, and acknowledges both the positive and negative fan reactions. The recent interview with Matt Strevens did so I’m hopeful. I think it’ll be very interesting to read Chris’ “side of the story”.
