New mixed-media adventure ‘Doctor Who: Circuit Breaker’ coming to the Whoniverse in 2026

The Fugitive Doctor leads an exciting new series of adventures spanning across audio dramas, novels, comics and more.

BBC Studios, in collaboration with BBC Audio, Big Finish Productions, Doctor Who Magazine, East Side Games, Penguin Random House and Titan Comics are excited to announce the upcoming launch of Circuit Breaker, a groundbreaking mixed-media Doctor Who story set to debut in 2026.

Spanning audio dramas, comics, mobile games, novels, and digital storytelling, Circuit Breaker is a bold new chapter in the Whoniverse offering an ambitious interconnected narrative that will unfold across multiple formats, inviting fans to experience the mystery from every angle. The overarching narrative is crafted by Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson, best-selling author and rising star in speculative fiction and features Jo Martin as the Fugitive Doctor.

In Circuit Breaker, strange alien artifacts begin appearing inside UNIT’s Black Archive. Each object is unmistakably linked to a different regeneration of the Doctor, but they’ve been tampered with. A corrupted energy signature of unknown origin pulses through them, and their sudden arrival has torn tiny ruptures across time and space.

UNIT is out of options. To repair the damage and restore the timeline, the objects must be returned to the exact moments they were taken from. If not, the Doctor’s adventures – and the universe itself – could unravel.

To solve the mystery, UNIT calls upon a little-known incarnation of the Time Lord: the Fugitive Doctor, played by Jo Martin, who returns in a central role. But how does UNIT know about her? And is she the Doctor they expect?

Jo Martin commented: “I’m thrilled to tell more stories about the Fugitive Doctor and cannot wait for fans to unlock all the twists and turns across the Circuit Breaker story. This character has always meant so much to me, and it is a joy to continue building her legacy and dive back into the Whoniverse.”

Stephen Davies, SVP Global Licensing, BBC Studios added “Circuit Breaker is an exciting evolution for the Whoniverse. By bringing together world-class partners across publishing, audio, comics, and gaming, we’re creating a truly immersive, multi-platform experience for fans. This is a bold step in expanding the Doctor Who brand, deepening engagement, exploring new stories, and welcoming new audiences into the universe of the Doctor.”

Circuit Breaker will debut in 2026.

Well, another Who story I’ll miss out on again – the audio from Big Finish is just way too expensive and the games 1 not gonna happen. Big Finnish does the absolute best “movies for your kind” audio dramas, but their pricing is., well, fixed income isn’t gonna cut it for this story! Are most “Whovians” out there made of cash?

I now only by some books, primarily target books and adaptations, along with the dr who magazine comic strip collections and the erimem and Cushing books. Now after 2025 I’m stopping buying the original fiction as well. I still get the animations and new series but I’m not getting war between as I wasn’t too impressed by it. Money is a factor, it’s far too expensive to just buy everything but the fact is I’ve been finding the original fiction not to my taste for a while now. The idea of a book by jo Martin appeals but not at £22 and there is no guarantee of a paperback edition. Besides these multi media events don’t appeal much to me now so I think I wont be getting any of it. For those who do get it, I hope you enjoy it.

I don’t game, I’m way to old, missed that on. But I love my Audiobooks,Vinyl & CD and the Books. With TLV I didn’t do “everything” nor with Doom’s Day. But both ranges were very enjoyable. Big Finish do the best. with full cast as BBC seem to go for Narrated. I believe both ranges sold very well in thier components and Target audiences.

Hopefully another Viny as TLV & Doom got one each. Now just waiting for the Vinyl Edition of a Walkman :

Take the 9th Doctor adventures right now. Around a tenner, and you get Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, several other cast members, the writer, the composer, the script editor, the sound designer, the director, the cover artist and others wages to pay. A tenner ain’t bad for all of that. You don’t *have* to do all of their output, you can pick and choose. The pricing is *not* terrible when you consider every single creative involved with each release. Frankly, people often forget they are a small company and not made of money like the BBC or Amazon. Infuriating tbh.

There is so much big finish stuff that it is expensive. Plus I just lost interest in it after listening to them for a decade or so. My issue is there was just too many releases and I felt the quality suffered as a result.

@ Missyrules yes but you don’t have to do every single release, pick and choose. I’ve been listening a decade and I can honestly say without a doubt 2025 has been of their most consistent years for quality. Modern BF is phenomenal with releases like Genesis of the Cybermen, Hooklight, Planet Krynoid and Torchwood releases.

Right. Audios are inaccessible to me due to my deafness. So, yeah, what’s the point in buying these?!

Its designed so you can do whatever you want to get a full story, but you get the most from it if you do them all. Take TLV or Doom’s Day you can do just the audios, or just the books, the comics and get a story from them without needing to do everything. Albeit it was more the case for TLV than Doom’s Day but even still.

      Can’t help but agree.

Never did any of Doomsday (the character didn’t appeal)

Did the 2 books and the BF audios for Time Lord Victorious and they were great.

Let’s hope theyve earned from the “Doom’s Day” multi-platform mess! At least the Fugitive Doctor is a promising start.
