Christopher Eccleston Returns to Doctor Who

Big Finish Productions, in association with BBC Studios announces the long-awaited return of Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor.

First seen on screen in 2005, Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor introduced a whole new generation of fans to Doctor Who.

Now he’s back, with a brand-new series of twelve fantastic full-cast audio adventures in space and time, due to be released across four box sets, starting with volume one in May 2021.

Christopher Eccleston said: “After 15 years it will be exciting to revisit the Ninth Doctor’s world, bringing back to life a character I love playing.”

Story details, writers and additional guest cast are being kept under wraps at present but this Doctor Who audio series promises to be, once again, the trip of a lifetime.

Doctor Who fans worldwide can now pre-order all four volumes, which are available in three formats – collector’s edition CD, digital download or limited edition gatefold triple LP vinyl – exclusively from the Big Finish website.

Big Finish’s Chairman, Jason Haigh-Ellery said: “I first talked to Christopher about returning to the role of the Doctor at a fan convention in February this year. Christopher said he was enjoying meeting the fans and was pleased that his Doctor was remembered so fondly. I am so pleased that Christopher has decided to return to the role with us – and I’m excited to welcome him to the Big Finish family as we discover the new adventures of the Ninth Doctor.”

Big Finish’s Creative Director, Nicholas Briggs, added: “Working with Chris was a very special time for me. The beginning of my Doctor Who TV career. So, writing for and directing him feels incredibly exciting. He’s such a powerful performer and it’ll be amazing to work with him again.”

Each of the four volumes in Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures will be released as a 4-disc collector’s edition box set or download containing three brand-new full cast audio adventures, plus a selection of behind-the-scenes extras.

Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures is now available globally for pre-order exclusively at the Big Finish website (www.bigfinish.com), from just £19.99.

Big Finish listeners can save by pre-ordering a bundle of the entire series for just £88 (as a collector’s edition box set) or £78 (as a download).

The Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures triple LP vinyls are strictly limited to a pressing of 1,000 per volume, and can be pre-ordered at £35.99 each, or £132 for the bundle of all four albums, again exclusively at the Big Finish website (www.bigfinish.com). Please note: the vinyl editions do not include the behind-the-scenes extras.

Don’t think he’s really interested in Dr Who.
It will have been the money that’s tempted him back. Like when he accepted the role originally.

Been alife long fan of Dr Who. Personally, it’s been very soul destroying watching this situation unfold over the years.
Don’t hate me, just my opinion

I don’t think it’s a reason to hate, I’m not sure the money was ever a factor. Although we may never get the full story, it has been all but confirmed that there was some serious malpractice on set in the early days and Eccleston got shut down for trying to call those responsible out for it. It was a matter of principle rather than money.
Eccleston admitted last year that he did treat it as just another role, because that’s just how he works, and that he realised with hindsight that Tennant probably appreciated what he was taking on more than he did at the time. He has also said on numerous occasions that he loved the part and originally asked to be considered for it because he liked RTD’s work up till that point. He has also said he regretted not doing another series because he felt he was still finding the character and that he could have improved on what he did the first time round. Like Colin Baker before him, this is his chance to do just that.

      Thanks for the considerate reply.
As I said it’s just an opinion, I know everyone as them.

Been very disillusioned with Christopher Ecclestons attitude towards Dr Who and it’s fans over the years.
I can HONESTLY say i haven’t felt this way towards any other actor that as portrayed the good Doctor. Even Jodie Whitaker as had a bad rap, but I’ve no problem with her whatsoever playing the Doctor.

That’s no worries. I used to have similar thoughts on this but as more has come out, I’ve come to reconsider it. Whatever our feelings as fans, I think it’s important to be considerate to Chris. From what we can gather, making Series 1 was a really tough time for him. He was clashing with the producers, he was ill and his father died during all of it. If you’d left a job with all that going on, would want to look back?
From what I can gather it was the support from fans at Gallifrey One that helped him to reconsider.

I doubt he was tempted by money. Audio dramas are a niche market so Big Finish don’t really make much of a profit

I kind of hope this paves the way for him maybe doing the 60th tv special (if there is one).

He could team up with Jodie. The two ‘Northern-ish’ Doctors where 9 treats her like the companion.

Easy to put 9 there after Rose said no to stay with Mickey at end of Rose. Has adventure with 13 and 13 tells him to give Rose another chance. So he heads back afterwards to get her.

So exciting!! Eeryone at Gallifrey One 2020 told Eccleston how much his incarnation is loved and how wonderful it would be if he continued adventures with Big Finish. He listened to the fans!
