BBC Studios announces Peter Davison’s inaugural series as the next installment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range

Today BBC Studios is pleased to announce Doctor Who Season 19 as the next release in the Doctor Who: The Collection range. Season 19 is Peter Davison’s first series as the Fifth Doctor and this edition follows the success of Tom Baker’s first season on Blu-ray. To be released on the 19th November 2018, this collector’s edition also has a limited run.

The title will be available to pre-order from HMV and Amazon from tomorrow.

Peter Davison joined the long running BBC series in 1982, replacing Tom Baker as the Doctor. His first season bursts with the fresh energy and breathless excitement that would come to define his era. Across seven classic adventures, the Doctor and his companions Tegan, Nyssa and Adric face off against The Master, the terrifying Mara, the Terileptils, the Plasmatons, Monarch and the revamped Cybermen, making a triumphant return to the series in one of the programme’s all-time classics.

The Limited Edition Blu-ray includes brand new ‘Special Features’ exclusive to this set include: Five new ‘Making-Of’ documentaries for Castrovalva, Four To Doomsday, Black Orchid, Earthshock and Time-Flight, surround sound mixes for Kinda and Earthshock, an Extended Version of Black Orchid Part One, rare studio footage from Castrovalva, Four To Doomsday, Earthshock and Time-Flight, updated special effects for Castrovalva, seven more editions of Behind The Sofa and a newly-shot one-hour interview Peter Davison In Conversation with Matthew Sweet, and much more.

The eight-disc box set also includes the Peter Davison/David Tennant mini-episode Time Crash, plus hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD.

All 26 episodes are being remastered from scratch by Peter Crocker and Mark Ayres. With this season’s original 16mm film elements still in existence, the location material can be presented in true HD, with studio material upscaled. Lee Binding is again providing stunning packaging design and Pete McTighe has written extensive booklet notes and is the content consultant for the title. Doctor Who: The Collection is executively produced for BBC Studios by Russell Minton.

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 19 includes the following stories from 1982:

Castrovalva (Four episodes); Four To Doomsday (Four Episodes); Kinda (Four Episodes); The Visitation (Four Episodes); Black Orchid (Two Episodes); Earthshock (Four Episodes); Time-Flight (Four episodes)

How will they do with shada? in the season 17 will they put the animated version or that narrated by Tom? (it would be cool if they put that disgusting animated version of ian levine)

I’d imagine both the narrated and the 2017 animated versions will be included. I can’t see any way they would include the Levine version. It’s a fan made version at this point and there are some characters that Ian added that would need clearance

I received my replacement discs from Sony this morning. Haven’t watched them yet, but have to say the packaging in which I received them was very poor. They were just loose in a box with a small amount of bubble wrap. No clamshell cases, the discs were just loose. They could have easily been broken or scratched in the post. But, at least they’re here now, so I’ll watch them tonight.

Pretty much ditto here… as mine came this morning also, took 5 weeks from me sending the first request email, i also had an email 2 weeks ago where they noted the delay, the high volume of customers and a 3-4 week shipping schedule.

They were shipped in a card envelope, the discs were face together wrapped in sealed bubble wrapped, there was also a shipping note.

Im also saving them for this evenings viewing.

Roll on the next…and every…Blu Boxset!

Got to watch them still and hope they’re ok and hope the season 19 set doesn’t suffer similar issues as think the s.12 set was good despite the faulty 2 discs. Love classic who

I guess it’s a bit of a ‘learning curve’ and they’ll learn from the problem and improve things. Season 19 was probably filmed/recorded on better cameras and recording equipment and I’ve no doubt will look great. Hope the S12 discs are problem free. Hitchhikers Guide BR is out on Monday too…

    • Gordon

      September 30th, 2018 - 12:44pm

The hitchhikers blu ray is a Slight let down to be honest. The upscale really isn’t anything special. Not having the hd film in the main feature is a bit of a missed opportunity. Don’t think much of the vhs packaging. Seems a bit overpriced for what you get. On the plus side Mark Ayres restored the audio and it sounds fantastic. The extras are good too

    • Rob W

      September 30th, 2018 - 5:00pm

So, maybe the S19 boxset could be the same then in regards to the original film elements being presented in full HD as a seperate feature. The Hitchikers BR has a disclaimer on the packaging along the lines of due to the archive nature of the content, some scenes may vary. It’s a pity there’s no feature on the restoration/remastering as there could be technical reasons why any film elements aren’t or cannot be fully integrated into the series.

7 is not in the same boat as 12. Everything in season 12 exists in its original 625 line format. 7 only has 4 episodes of spearhead and ep 1 of ambassadors in its original format everything else is a hodgepodge of different sources. Episodes 2-7 of ambassadors is probably the worst looking colour episodes in who and would need more work on the colour for the blu ray release. What was fine for the dvd wouldn’t be fine for the blu ray. You don’t put out one of the worst looking pertwee seasons picture quality wise (spearhead aside) first. It might put people off buying others. Season 10 only has planet of the Daleks ep 3 that isn’t in its original 625 line format

      September 27th, 2018 - 11:37am

Since the copies of the episodes of hartnell / troughton are 16mm films can be scanned as spearhead from space and have the same quality?

    • Gordon

      September 27th, 2018 - 12:16pm

No because majority of those 16mm film prints are telerecordings. The quality isn’t as good as the 16mm film that was used for spearhead.

Read into this what you will but I saw somthing intresting on twitter just now reguarding a potential Season 11 set. Stuart Humphries (aka Babelcolour) was asked if he would ever give the first episode of Invasion of the Dinosours the same treatment as he did for the first episode of the Mind of Evil for the potential blu-ray. All he said was ‘who knows?’ with a ‘fingers on lips’ and ‘wink’ emoji.

A hint? Or just playful misdirection?

If he is doing it it will be a good year plus away anyway before we see season 11. 2020 at the very earliest. Mind of evil ep 1 took him 18 months. Just because it isn’t currently rumoured doesn’t mean nothing is happening for it.

Unlikely. All he did in the three doctors was read off cards and he only had about a dozen lines that he read out 1 after the other so he probably did that in less than 10 minutes. If you add on costume and make up He probably spent less than 2 hours in studio.

I was watching The Three Doctors with the info text on last night, it said his part was done in 45 minutes (4.45 to 5.30 PM if anyone cares) so probably an hour to an hour and a half factoring in costume and set up.

Haven’t heard anything yet. I do hope they improve the quality control on the future seasons though, because if people have to go through a 1-2 month(s) wait every time a new season is released, then it could put people off buying the future seasons.

Im taking this with a tardis full of salt. BBFC has nothing listed and trend appears to be first season of each dr. Would have thought more likely a 6 or 7 set to take advantage of those actors alive.

    • Gordon

      September 12th, 2018 - 7:37am

season 10 has been rumoured since last year along with 12 and 19 so it fits the rumour. Just because nothing has been mentioned on the Bbfc doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Nothing has been cleared for the season 19 set and that’s out in just over 2 months. It would not be a good idea in my opinion to put out season 7 first. Ambassadors 2-7 would need a lot of work to look good on blu ray. Nothing against the great work of the restoration team but It’s probably the worst looking colour story in the classic era. You want to impress in your first pertwee set so putting out the worst looking colour episodes isn’t the best idea. You don’t want to work on the hardest episodes first. Season 10 has 25 out of 26 episodes in its original 625 line format so it would be an easier prospect for restoration than 7. Season 12 was picked as it was a popular season and season 19 was because of how much film existed. The fact that it was the first season of tom and Peter was coincidental. The rumoured first releases are 12, 19, 10, and 18. 12 and 19 is happening. This email seems to comfirm season 10. Christopher bidmed has said on twitter that he’s done an interview for meglos which pretty much confirms 18 is being worked on so It’s definitely not being worked on in order. Would you really have out season 24 before the far better recieved 25 and 26. Season 24 has a dreadful reputation and having that out first could sink the range dead.

    Question:

Why do the restoration team rewrite the credits on the restored versions of the episodes, hence leading to the misspelling of Michael Wisher’s name on the Season 12 ‘Revenge’ disc?

I’ve also noticed that on the restored ‘Tomb of the Cybermen’ DVD, some of the credits for episode 4 are a slightly different font to the original font, despite looking very similar. I don’t know whether anyone else has noticed.

Do the restoration team rewrite the credits over freshly restored title sequences?

They definitely need to stop reviews before a product is released. I hate that people give it 1 star before even seeing/buying it. But, then again, I hate when people give 5 stars before seeing it too, just because they’re a fan. They just shouldn’t be allowed unless they’ve actually bought the product. This is why I never trust online reviews anymore. I hardly ever read them now and just make my own judgement.

When I used to give reviews, they were always balanced. I’d wait until I actually have the product in my hand and give the pros and cons. I’ve stopped doing them now though, as the whole review systems seem like a bit of a joke these days.

Sadly it happens on here too. Too many people review things before they are released and then moan when all someone says is give it a chance.

It’s sad to see it happen, but unfortunately it does.
I usually only write a review for pre-order items if it’s a movie that has just come out at cinemas, as a review of the film alone, because no extras get announced that early.

    • Lee

      September 4th, 2018 - 9:05pm

I got mine delivered the other day after it got relisted on Amazon briefly. I was hoping that it would come with the fixed discs – unfortunately not, they’re still the faulty discs, so I still had to contact the BBC.

I think it’s a bizarre decision from the BBC to let the US have a regular release and only give the UK a limited edition release. The fact that a lot of people from the US will also be buying the UK version for the packaging doesn’t help. Feels like the UK fans have been given the short end of the stick here, unless the BBC decides to issue a regular release once the limited packaging has sold out. I have a feeling they won’t though.

I have to say that I’m not all that bothered about the type of box they’re in, the content is the main attraction for me. I don’t have a region free blu-ray player either, so it isn’t like I can just import the US version.

    • The Myrka

      September 4th, 2018 - 9:13pm

Yeah I’d much rather have non limited releases.

    • Gordon

      September 4th, 2018 - 10:20pm

It’s the packaging that is the limited edition not the discs themselves and the only reason there hasn’t been a 2nd repress is the replacement discs haven’t yet been made available to those that got the first pressing. The people that got them first should get them first. It’s only fair. Just have to be patient. If you are that impatient just order the us or Australian versions (they are both region free).

    • Lee

      September 4th, 2018 - 11:43pm

Gordon, do you know if the UK will get a regular release? I haven’t seen any indication that there is going to be a regular release of this in the UK after the limited edition sells out.

Also, are these releases truly region-free? I’ve seen reviews on Amazon where people have bought several different BBC DVD/Blu-rays (not just DW) sold as “Region-free” in their description, which then turn out not to be and won’t play in different regions. This is another reason I would not want to risk buying a BBC blu-ray from a different region to mine. I’d have to pay shipping here to the UK and then back if it doesn’t work.

It would be nice if the UK got a regular release, as there might have been some people holding off thinking it will be getting a normal release later on. Not everybody who buys DVDs/Blu-ray follows forums, so they won’t know that this will be getting another run and think they’ve missed out on the release now.

    • Gordon

      September 4th, 2018 - 11:57pm

It’s the packaging that is limited so it should get a standard edition eventually but that’s not confirmed yet. The us version is definitely region free. One of my mates imported the us release and it played fine. The Australian discs are the same as the uk ones so they will work ok as well

    • Rob W

      September 5th, 2018 - 9:01am

    • Lee

      September 5th, 2018 - 10:38am

Thanks Gordon, that’s good to know about the AU & US discs being region-free. Worst case scenario then I could still get a future release from the US if the limited stocks do sell out early.

Whilst the limited edition packaging is very nice, I wouldn’t be too bothered if I missed out on it, so long as I can get a regular release somehow.

    • Rob W

      September 5th, 2018 - 10:56am

That’s how the format works 1 sofa contains people involved with that season and 1 sofa contains people involved with the show that had nothing to do with that season. Season 12 had janet fielding Sarah Sutton and the Louise Jamison neither which was apart of season 12

But they were all of 4s companions, surely it would make sense for Nicola to be on the other sofa

    • Gordon

      September 5th, 2018 - 7:31am

It has nothing to do with them being his companions. They are representing the casual viewer who has nothing to with season 12. They fact they were his companions is Immaterial

Did anyone in France received replacement discs for T. Baker boxset ?

I received this First Week of July and… nothing …

We will be offering replacements for the errors on Disc 3 (The Sontaran Experiment) and Disc 5 (Revenge of the Cybermen) in the Doctor Who The Collection Season 12 Blu-ray release.

The estimated time frame for the replacement to be available is 4-5 weeks.
Please allow some time for the replacement disc to reach you.

They started sending out replacement discs but due to them accidentally sending out a faulty version of revenge instead of the fixed version they stopped sending them out just now. They are having to repress the revenge disc again and will send out when ready. They gave next week as the estimated ready time

You could have him without a hat. You could have him without a hat and scarf. You could have him without his sonic screwdriver. You could have him holding k9. You could have him holding the tracer in the key to time season. He has a different outfit in season 18 so that will be different. Lots of things they can do

Never thought we needed a 2nd making of earthshock. Putting the shock into earthshock was a very good making of. However Having seen some photos of the new making of for it I’m impressed so far. Using replica backdrops from earthshock and getting David banks back in costume it looks different enough to make it worth doing.

I won Season 12 in a DWM competition, would I still be eligible for the replacement discs? I got a slip of paper with it telling me I’ve won with the DWM logo on (presuming this is only available if you win a competition, so would this count as ‘proof of purchase’)?

Seasons 18, 10 and 26 are the rumoured next releases. Christopher bidmed mentioned on Twitter that he has done an interview for meglos so I think we will be getting season 18 sooner rather than later. Twin dilemma was broadcast during season 21 so it should be there

My guess is Colin Baker’s debut season (21) Tom Baker’s final season would be great too. Jon Pertwee’s last season? Um, John Levane and Richard Franklin Behind The Sofa? Yes, sounds good. Season 26? Just the 4 stories…

    • Gordon

      August 27th, 2018 - 6:38pm

Not necessairily. Just have Peter with regeneration energy with a silhouette of colin in the background. You could also include a sticker saying also contains Colin baker’s debut story

    • Gordon

      August 27th, 2018 - 6:59pm

It’s been implied on twitter by Peter Crocker that the TV movie “might” be on the season 26 blu ray set along with all the wilderness years stuff so it could be more than just 4 stories . I’d love to see the restoration team have a proper go at that after the horrible version that was released in 2015

    • Anonymous

      August 27th, 2018 - 11:47pm

I would love to see these sets continue into the New Who seasons. Imagine Serries 1-11 and beyond treated with the same care and attention as the classic series. After all New Who and Clasic Who are supposed to be branded the same now.

    • Gordon

      August 28th, 2018 - 11:32am

I can see them doing that considering the episodes will be over 20 years old by the time they finish the classic seasons off. Plenty of time has passed to do a more honest opinion in hindsight of the 2005 series onwards. I find they are far too congratularatory on the dvd’s and interviews at the time. Plus you can add things like the correct version of born again attack of the grask tardisodes podcast commentaries full confidential and other material that didn’t make the dvd releases

    • Anonymous

      August 28th, 2018 - 8:29pm

I would love a wilderness years boxset

Just with the TV movie on one disc
Maybe an extended version if that exists I heard rumours it did
      A few new documentary series
then dimensions in time (for fun)
      Doctor Forever documentaries
The curse of fatal death, an animated (please) lost in the dark dimension and finally scream of the Shalka and doctor who night in full

    • Anonymous

      August 29th, 2018 - 1:28am

Dimensions in time and curse of the fatal death can’t be released due to their being charity episodes. Something to do with clearances and actor appearances being on the understanding it they won’t be shown again. Yes, curse was released as a video but again it was a one off release. As for dark dimension I doubt it would ever be released. The story wasn’t great and several of the actors were unhappy with it so are unlikely to want to make it. Also it would be very expensive to make, they would have to create everything from scratch, no set design no character design, only doctors and companions would have any reference material. They would have to hire an entire cast to record the 90 odd minute movie so costs would be very high.

    • Anonymous

      August 29th, 2018 - 7:53am

Um, bonus features. And they have been shown all over YouTube. I think they should’ve put them as bonus. Charity episodes are put on the dvd box sets all the time. And lost in the dark diemenion. You literally have to alter the script a bit to include all the doctors. Change Brigdair to mike Yates. And all you need to design is the villain and the a few extras.

    • Gordon

      August 29th, 2018 - 8:26am

Dimensions in time is a very special case. All those involved agreed to be in it as long as it would never be shown again and it never be released for financial gain even for charitable purposes (they are still charging money for it). You could try and track everyone involved in front and behind the camera down to agree to release it for charitable purposes however
      a) it would cost 10s if thousands to do so
      B) only 1 person needs to say no and the whole thing is kiboshed
      C) equity who dealt with the original contracts would enforce the original contract.

Even if this wasn’t an issue paying children in need 56 thousand pounds (bbc don’t actually have the rights to the footage) would be too much for a 14 minute skit just wouldn’t be worth it. Too much hurdles to jump through

It’s a no brainer, I’ve pre-ordered from Zoom using the discount code SIGNUP10 and it brings it to £35.99, I forgot to use Quidco and that would have been 4% cashback too to my account. So in theory £34.99 for 8 Blu Ray discs in a limited edition set,

first class posted in good packaging and I can always sell if I decide not to keep and will probably get my money back or more.

I presume the BBC would print sets based on pre-orders too to ensure fulfillment of the product?

Wait, Time Crash, or Time Flight?

Time Flight, with Concorde, is the final serial of Season 19.

Time Crash, with David Tennant and aired for Comic Relief in 2007, and is set post Arc Of Infinity, apparently, as it refers to “Time Lords with funny hats”, and Arc is the first serial of Season 20.

That’s what I was trying to get across by adding “apparently” Gordon, It’s never explicit about it, just the Tenth Doctor running through a few references about Season 19 and 20. The joys of Moffatt’s writing, eh!

(That’s a joke, before anyone kicks up a fuss one way or another)

    • MIKSK89

Does make you wonder if ‘Time Crash’ has been added to This as both this season’s final story as well as the three 2007 episodes that preceded Time Crash both included The Master.
(dialogue extract: Doctor 10: ‘and the Master. Oh! He Just showed up again, same as ever.’
Doctor 5: ‘Oh no, really? Does he still have thay rubbish beard?’
Doctor 10: ‘No, no beard this time. Well, a wife.’)
Makes you wonder if they will add to Season 20, as a bonus on the Five Doctors Disc, include 2013s 50th anniversary spoof ‘The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot’.
