BBC Studios announces Peter Davison’s inaugural series as the next installment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range

Today BBC Studios is pleased to announce Doctor Who Season 19 as the next release in the Doctor Who: The Collection range. Season 19 is Peter Davison’s first series as the Fifth Doctor and this edition follows the success of Tom Baker’s first season on Blu-ray. To be released on the 19th November 2018, this collector’s edition also has a limited run.

The title will be available to pre-order from HMV and Amazon from tomorrow.

Peter Davison joined the long running BBC series in 1982, replacing Tom Baker as the Doctor. His first season bursts with the fresh energy and breathless excitement that would come to define his era. Across seven classic adventures, the Doctor and his companions Tegan, Nyssa and Adric face off against The Master, the terrifying Mara, the Terileptils, the Plasmatons, Monarch and the revamped Cybermen, making a triumphant return to the series in one of the programme’s all-time classics.

The Limited Edition Blu-ray includes brand new ‘Special Features’ exclusive to this set include: Five new ‘Making-Of’ documentaries for Castrovalva, Four To Doomsday, Black Orchid, Earthshock and Time-Flight, surround sound mixes for Kinda and Earthshock, an Extended Version of Black Orchid Part One, rare studio footage from Castrovalva, Four To Doomsday, Earthshock and Time-Flight, updated special effects for Castrovalva, seven more editions of Behind The Sofa and a newly-shot one-hour interview Peter Davison In Conversation with Matthew Sweet, and much more.

The eight-disc box set also includes the Peter Davison/David Tennant mini-episode Time Crash, plus hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD.

All 26 episodes are being remastered from scratch by Peter Crocker and Mark Ayres. With this season’s original 16mm film elements still in existence, the location material can be presented in true HD, with studio material upscaled. Lee Binding is again providing stunning packaging design and Pete McTighe has written extensive booklet notes and is the content consultant for the title. Doctor Who: The Collection is executively produced for BBC Studios by Russell Minton.

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 19 includes the following stories from 1982:

Castrovalva (Four episodes); Four To Doomsday (Four Episodes); Kinda (Four Episodes); The Visitation (Four Episodes); Black Orchid (Two Episodes); Earthshock (Four Episodes); Time-Flight (Four episodes)

I missed out on the s12 because I figured it’d stay in print so I’m pouncing on the rest of these. My s19 is here on Tuesday and s18 is pre-ordered. Looking forward to it.

Good idea Ruth. Have to admit, I wasn’t originally going to buy them, as I’ve been buying the DVDs ever since the first releases. So, I thought there wouldn’t be much point in having these in HD. The S12 set had already sold out, but then briefly went back on sale on Amazon UK for about an hour, and that’s when I picked mine up. I still think the BBC should release a standard package version which isn’t limited in the UK. Maybe they will, but who knows?

Glad I did now as I’m loving the new extras, and will definitely be buying all the future releases.

I’m not worrying about s12. Hoping they re-release it even if it’s in a plastic box with a sleeve.but either way I’ll still 25 great looking sets.

So far I’ve watched the first 3 discs. Watched each story twice. Once with the commentary and info subtitles on, and once with them both off. So far no other issues except the continuity audio sync on Castrovalva. Great set so far!

    The Visitation tomorrow! 😀

I’ve watched pretty much everything bar the behind the scenes on timeflight and the slight audio sync on disc 1 is the only issue.

    • Rob W

      December 14th, 2018 - 11:34am

The Audio Sync on the continuity pal? (I’ve only watched Earthshock and Black Orchid).

    • Gordon

      December 14th, 2018 - 12:11pm

Yeah. That continuity error on disc with the audio being 6 seconds out of sync seems to be the only error

      December 14th, 2018 - 2:12pm

Have also noticed when playing Kinda Part 4 with CG effects on that the CGI credit ‘page’ is lifted from the Earthshock CG credits. The starfield jumps and the Earthshock effects people are credited, not the Kinda crew. Plays fine when playing episode as broadcast.

    • Gordon

      December 15th, 2018 - 3:10pm

I’ve checked mine and my copy of kinda doesn’t do that.

    • Professor Prune

      December 15th, 2018 - 5:52pm

Thanks for your reply, Gordon. How strange. Have checked the end credits again and my Part Four of Kinda definitely has:

      Visual Effects Designer
      Peter Logan

      Video Effects
      Dave Chapman

…on the ‘as broadcast’ version with perfect starfield background, and:

      Visual Effects Designer
      Steve Bowman

      Video Effects
      Dave Chapman

      CGI Effects
      Dave Jervis

      Vision Mixer
      James Gould

…on the CG version (credits consistent with Earthshock’s crew and CG version end credits), plus the starfield background jumps both when those names appear and when it moves to the next set of crew credits.

Has anyone else found the same issue? Would feel odd if mine was the only one that does this…

    • Gordon

      December 15th, 2018 - 9:36pm

I could be wrong But didn’t Dave Jarvis do cgi for both?

    • Professor Prune

      December 15th, 2018 - 10:23pm

I’m sure you’re right; but the CG Ep4 credits do credit a different VED to the original and add in a VM credit which doesn’t feature on the original (plus the starfield jerks as these credits appear and disappear). The credits seem to match perfectly with Earthshock in terms of crew but not Kinda (CG artist excepted).

    • Gordon

      December 16th, 2018 - 5:19am

Sounds like it could possibly be a branching issue.

I just watched Earthshock last night and yet again WOW, 1h 45m of raw studio footage. New documentary “Earthshocked” is a great addition to go along with the original one.

    • Gordon

      December 16th, 2018 - 1:30pm

Wait till you get to time flight. 2hrs 45 of raw studio footage

      December 11th, 2018 - 7:17pm

A pity you have to select the extended episode one of Black Orchid yourself don’t you think..?

    • Gordon

      December 12th, 2018 - 1:35am

Yeah. It’s a shame there isn’t an option to watch the extended version of ep1 with ep 2 but it’s a minor niggle

    • Lee

      December 15th, 2018 - 3:49pm

I think a possible reason why they didn’t do that is to do with the commentary. If you were to select the commentary option and select the extended episode then the commentary would cut in and out or have to be re-edited. Or they would have had to recorded a new one for the extended episode.

    December 11th, 2018 - 12:57am

In Castrovalva they’ve fixed the question marks on The Doctor’s collars when he’s levitating in The Zero Room! They’re no longer back to front! 😀

      December 10th, 2018 - 10:45pm

Going by the 3 month turn around between 19 and 18 I do think we will possibly get 4 sets next year and it fits in with the 3-4 sets a year that is possible. I think 10 is a given going by the Australian email listing. Katy manning was filming in wales this past weekend. Think it’s a good shout it’s to do with green death. 26 is apparently due next Christmas due to 1 of the actors. There is probably room for 1 more season inbetween 10 and 26. Maybe season 17 seeing as extras are being made for that. Mind you it could just be a case that they are getting lalla to do extras now as she is moving to Hong Kong at some point soon.

    • SJF

      December 14th, 2018 - 11:16pm

I’d love a wilderness years Boxset for Eight.

      Like including:

      The TV Movie
      Shada (McGann Version)
      Real Time
      Death Comes to Time
More Than Thirty Years in the TARDIS
      Scream of the Shalka
      The Curse of Fatal Death
      Dimensions in Time
      Search Out Space
Night of the Doctor (Just so you have both of Eight’s onscreen appearances in the set)

And then maybe even Storm Warning or something as an extra to flesh out the Eighth Doctor’s “era”

And just other general sketches and minisodes and interviews and extras relevant to the time.

on the Castrovalva disk the special feature which show the bbc1 continuity announcements there is an error after playing for just over a minute the sound is completely out of sync with the pictures by about 10 seconds

    • Lee

      December 10th, 2018 - 9:27pm

If it’s just in the continuities I don’t mind at all. But if it starts happening on other special features, or in the episodes – then the BBC had better be ready for some emails arriving in their inbox! 😀
I don’t really watch the continuities anyway. I have all the classic DVDs, and those were the only thing I never bothered to watch.

    • Anonymous

      December 10th, 2018 - 9:28pm

Yes your right, on the castrovalva disk the continuity extra, the sound does not match the images on screen when Tom baker appears and there after, take it they messed up the disks again. Have they heard of quality control.

    • Gordon

      December 10th, 2018 - 10:20pm

If that’s the worst thing wrong with the set I’d say that’s an improvement over season 12. They said they upped quality control I do believe them when they say they have. They are still human though. Regardless of how good quality control is mistakes still slip through especially When you have over 40 hours worth of material to shift through it becomes hard to make sure everything is perfect. They aren’t cybermen checking these after all. Think what had happened was they added something new to the continuities when compiling the blu ray set and accidentally added the original dvd audio. The gap of run time between dvd and blu ray is about the same as the audio sync difference. On a positive note at least it isn’t part of the main features or even main special features. Being honest I will be surprised if they did a replacement disc for it. It’s just so minor compared with the season 12 errors. They could always tack on a fixed version of them onto the legopolis continuities I guess.

    • Exdalek

      December 11th, 2018 - 11:24pm

I’ve watched the first 2 discs entirely and noticed the continuity announcements sync fault. I have found no other faults – but I have bad eyesight, a left hearing aid and awaiting a fitting appointment for the right, a condition where I fall asleep often and memory problems, so I may not be the first to spot faults!

    • Alan Silvester

      December 14th, 2018 - 10:01am

Yes, Chris, I noticed this sync problem this morning and I was wondering if it was just my disc! I think they should issue replacement corrected discs, as this is an obvious error that should have been picked up in quality control. I shall be e-mailing BBC Worldwide. I thought with the release date being pushed back twice, silly errors like this would not be present.

    • Lee

      December 14th, 2018 - 6:24pm

I can’t see them offering replacement discs just for that. But if they do decide to, I’ll happily email them for a replacement. The continuities just aren’t important to me. They’re a nice little piece of nostalgia, but, along with the Coming Soon trailers for upcoming DVDs (which doesn’t make sense on these blu-rays) they’re the least important part of the releases, for me anyway.

      Let us know the outcome.

Just put this on my shelf and noticed the season 19 is slightly thicker than season 12, thought these were meant to be exactly the same size, so that all match, remember reading it somewhere, does that mean the early season will be bigger still. Not finding fault, it’s a very nice boxset.

Loving this set, again ‘Behind The Sofa’ is a brilliant addition to these collections. And ‘Peter Davison in Conversation’ is just as in depth and intriguing a watch as Season 12’s ‘Tom Baker in Conversation’.

My only gripe (and it’s such a small one) is that ‘Earthshock’ no longer has the Easter Egg of ‘The Real McCoy’ sketch about dubbing the adventure in Jamaican for JBC Channel 9. (“But You Look Like No Dalek to Me!”) It was an easter egg for The DVD but I’m wondering if they could clear the rights for the Blu-Ray.

I’ll probably just get a copy of Earthshock on DVD.

Apparently, some of the extras are being reshuffled around to better coincide with the year they appeared. So, it’s possible it might be moved to a future boxset. I can’t remember what year that Real McCoy sketch was first broadcast though.

From the looks of things it was quite early but it didn’t air until the early 1990’s so that does make sense (maybe Season 25 will include this, ‘Davros Connections’ and ‘More than 30-Years in the TARDIS’ with Season 26 including have The TV Movie and Scream of The Shalka)

Oooo, didn’t know there were two editions… I think it’s just the standard one, it has the cardboard base and back cover like the previous release. It’s great. I admit I haven’t watched some of the Davison era since the VHS releases so these box sets are a great way to catch up with them again…….

I was thinking how it would cool if the BBC did Nu Who in matching box sets like these with new extras. With the same Lee Binding artwork. It really would be a definitive collection.

Says 10th December 2018 now on Amazon UK

Plus DWM Says the 16th November

So I guess no one really knows when it’s released

DWM has to be prepared well ahead of time, so they probably wouldn’t have received the new date in time to publish it

  • Rick

    November 16th, 2018 - 9:57pm

In the new issue of DWM it is said that it is hoped more of the same box sets will follow. So it sounds like it isn’t guaranteed that we will get all 26 seasons. Hopefully the DVD range stays in print for now so I can pick up some of my favourite stories individually.

I assume as long as people buy them they will keep making them.

Hope we do get all the classic series box sets. Even if the missing episodes are animated and then if found, the discs could be re-released. The quality of the boxsets are to a high standard, bet they would all look good on the shelf together.
