I’ve just read the latest feature about logos in DWM. It was very interesting and explained why the logo in the Matt Smith era kept being fiddled with and adjusted, before settling on one for the Peter Capaldi run.

At the time of designing it they really didn’t seem to consider merchandising and branch recognition though, which is why the branding has seemed all over the place in the last 8 years or so and probably one of the causes for merchandise taking a down turn. It seemed a bit naive and short sighted to not consider it properly. Hopefully the new team coming in won’t make the same mistakes! I’d say early signs are positive!

very interesting, its strange with such a high profile licence that brand recognition didn’t take a front seat and i do believe merchandise sales to an extent did suffer as a result – something they are clearly trying to correct now.

does anyone know when it will be a likely time for big finish to release the tenth doctor adventures 2 as a box set. like they did for the first one. (not the limited addition one)

Going by the first Probably when the 2nd is close to selling out

I think they said back in February that it was close to running out. I can guarantee they’ve probably got the New Boxset ready to go when the LE set runs out, bearing in mind that they didn’t release the V1 Boxset for preorder or anything, they just released it out of the blue after the LE sold out.

£200 for a Clara figure from BigChiefStudios that is 2 years late and when I and many others finally receive it, we are delighted to see that the figure is completely shambolic. The sort of quality you’d expect from the Character 10″ dolls at £20. (Not knocking CO). Same goes with the Rose Tyler figure by the looks of it too from the images i’ve seen online.

Wont be ordering any more products from them that’s for sure. And i’m normally the person who tries to see the positive in everything.

    • booboo

      April 20th, 2018 - 7:15am

Clara does seem to look very different from the promo images which looked spot on

    • Judooning

      April 20th, 2018 - 10:00am

Very different indeed. The promo image is what originally sold me on this as it’s the only companion figure I ordered from them.
Was looking forward to getting the thirteenth Doctor from them but having second thoughts now.

Where can I find these pictures of the Final product Rose & Clara Big Chief Figures ???

    • Koquillian

      April 20th, 2018 - 8:20pm

The Rose figure especially has garnered a lot of criticism, rightfully so in my eyes. The war doctor seems to have gone down well despite and issue with cracks appearing on the back of his head on most figures. Their recent Thunderbirds figures have gone down the best out of the recent releases as it seems Big Chief is moving away from Doctor who a little bit.

    • MickeySmith07

I can say honestly that I have no problems with my Clara figure in terms of quality/likeness.

    • Stirlingwhoo

If it’s new, there’s a wee sticker sheet with it so you can put whatever VOC number you want on it

  • Button

    April 18th, 2018 - 4:29pm

I have always wondered the story behind why there are so many dalek props used in the show compared to ten years ago. I know that in the past there have only ever been four dalek props created but in recent series there have been at least seven bronze daleks featured. I know that one of them was the first bronze dalek used way back in 2005 and another was a fan made dalek. But the last six are a complete mystery to me.

    • Doctor Stu

      April 18th, 2018 - 9:38pm

There’s been a bunch of the cult of skaro reused, same for the parting of ways I think as in magicians apprentice you could see th different ID tags that have been used:, namely the parting of the ways tags, the cult of skaro tags and the stolen earth/onwards tags. There’s also a bunch of bronze Daleks that are slightly different shades and have certain bits painted a certain shade that others don’t lending to the thought that they’ve just reused older props to go alongside the newer updated ones

Big Finish: Lady Christina volume 1 now has the new logo as part of the “from the worlds of Doctor Who” emblem.
This is the only release from September and beyond with a confirmed cover, so we have yet to see how they will incorporate it into other ranges.

    • 100,000 BC

      April 16th, 2018 - 6:52pm

I wonder if they’ll change the banner format, or have the logo tiny on the banner or right across the top, or use the “Who” insignia on the banner?

    • Anonymous

      April 16th, 2018 - 9:57pm

Apparently some releases of the 10th doctor adventures in germany feature the logo, not sure if its real though…

    • 100,000BC

      April 16th, 2018 - 10:07pm

I’ve seen those, they use the original artwork but with the logo across the top of the cover (and the titles/credits on the banner in German obviously). They may have been designed by the German distributor rather than Big Finish’s own creatives, although it is certainly one option they could take in their own covers.

    • 100,000 BC

      April 19th, 2018 - 5:39pm

We have confirmation of the new cover format now. I think it looks great, they know how to make a cover which works with the logo and the logo looks much neater for the fact it’s smaller, rather than almost touching the sides of the cover as it is on DWM and the series 9 soundtrack (although a big logo is probably necessary in the magazine business). Definitely the best use of the new logo I’ve seen (I also like how the box set format is the same as the individual story format).

Does anyone else find it annoying how there was never a Jackie Tyler action figure released

    • The Flying Shark

      April 16th, 2018 - 1:26pm

It really annoys me that we don’t even have a Titan of her and other big characters like Kate Stewart or Madame Kovarian, when we have pointless people like Canton Delaware or Robin Hood.

    • The Outcast

Jackie Tyler and Wilfred Mott would have been cool figures to have.

Considering her role in the series 2 finale I think the Jackie figure would’ve done well if released at that time . If it was released beyond that , say as part of the collectors series , it wouldn’t do as well .

    • Doctor Stu

      April 17th, 2018 - 10:45am

Jackie Tyler needed to be released as part of a doomsday set and Wilf as part of the Stolen Earth set perhaps or the end of time set

    • The Outcast

      April 19th, 2018 - 9:43am

I’d like more Classic companions such as Susan, Jamie, Romana 1 & 2 and Tegan, Companions for Doctors who don’t have any.

    • The Outcast

      April 19th, 2018 - 9:49am

*In a hypothetical scenario where CO offered to either classic companions or Jackie and Wilf, I’d have gone with more Classic companions rather than a Jackie and a Wilf. That is what I should have said in my last comment, because that doesn’t seem like it has any relevance, when I was trying to make it a response to Doctor Stu’s comment.

I have discovered today that the original script for An Unearthly Child is being sold at auction in Dudley, a mile away from my house, on 3rd May. I’m so excited i could burst. It’s expected to reach 5 to 8 thousand pounds. Not that I could ever dream of affording that kind of money but surely it is the ultimate collectors item for those who could.
I might go and look at it though!

So what 2005+ stories would people want to see next adapted into target novels, we’ll stick with the idea of 5 at a time, my wishlist would be:
    – Dalek – HAS to be by Robert Shearman though, no one else could touch it in my opinion
    – Love and monsters by RTD – put your pitchforks away, given the depth of character he was able to give in the adaptation of Rose, RTD could really flesh out the back stories of the LINDA squad. It could be far better than the tv episode.
-Victory of the Daleks by Mark Gatiss – Like LAM, this could be an attempt at redemption. The first half is pretty true to the episode up until we meet the new daleks, at which point they are portrayed in a far more threatning way than the whole bracewell nonsence
    – Nightmare in Silver by (if possible) Neill Gaiman – Again, another redemption attempt wher the first half of the novel has never been seen in the episode, before the doctor and clara arrive, detailing the events that led to the joining of the mondas and cybrus cybermen, creating the cyberiad cybermen.
    – The woman who lived (including evwnts of girl who died) by catherine tregenna – make it a real character focused piece dealing with the dilema of eternal life (oh, and get rod of that lion person)

    What does everyone else think?

    • Anonymous

      April 11th, 2018 - 8:18pm

Id like to see a big finish series detailing the creation of the cyberiad cybermen at some point, titled “Cyberwars” or something…

    • Doctor Stu

      April 12th, 2018 - 9:42am

I’d love to see a novelisation of Stolen earth/journeys end to flesh out the interactions between Sarah Jane and Luke, Torchwood, Harriet Jones and everyone on the sub wave etc. I love the scale of that episode where we’re bouncing to New York, Ealing, Cardiff, the Shadow Proclamation, Dalek Crucible, Germany. It seems like stuff that couldn’t only be achieved in a book but it’s done so well on tv that it would be good to flesh this out even more. And of course anything with Donna is going to be great.

Maybe also a novelization of In the forest or the night because without the awful acting and creepy girl hiding behind a bush it might be half decent; same applies to sleep no more, where that could have done with some serious fleshing out

    • R1ch1e

      April 12th, 2018 - 4:20pm

The long game, Army of Ghosts/Doomsday, Time of the Doctor, Robot of Sherwood and The Pilot. I know there not really exciting but I just think they will transfer to page really well.

    • Whorules

      April 12th, 2018 - 6:08pm

      Dalek by Rob Sherman
Love & monsters by r t d, agree he could make it very good.
Time of the doctor by Moffat
      Empress of mars by gatiss
Oh, and how about a reprint in target form for doctor who (1996) by gary russell?
And of course Jodie whitaker’s stories…

      Aliens of London/WWIII

      The Girl Who Waited
      Nightmare in Silver
      Dark Water/Death in Heaven
      Heaven Sent/Hell Bent

      April 13th, 2018 - 1:34am

If we are going to go with 5 releases 1 for each doctors 9-12 and 1 of the 4 remaining stories that never had a target novelisation (pirate planet, shada, resurection, remembrance)

I’d go for next time round:

      Dalek by Robert shearman
Voyage of the dammed by rtd
The eleventh hour by Steven Moffat
Robots of Sherwood by Mark Gatiss
The pirate planet by James goss

    • Gordon

      April 13th, 2018 - 1:45am

On a side note I wouldn’t say no if they printed the new novelisation that was made for the stones of blood audiobook. There was also a new novelisation written for the horns of Nimon audiobook back in 2012 however with audio go going bust it never apeared. It’s a shame if we don’t get to hear or read it. Probably end up like the an unearthly child 2013 novelisation. Tied up in rights issues

Finished reading the four New Who Targets last night. Really, really great stuff. Each book was a very enjoyable read. In particular, The Day of the Doctor for its… unique structure. Very Moffaty, but it worked in favour of the story here: it felt fresh and lots of fun. The insights and interactions between the three Doctors were absolutely the strongest part of the story; the scene where the three Doctors meet was very funny in print.

I was initially okay with these as just a one-off, a “What if?” for some key post-2005 stories. But I’d actually love to see more now if possible!
