Never understood why the dvd files is so popular appart from being a bit cheaper. The dvd releases are so much better. Great extras brilliant restoration. Worth paying the extra. Plus the dvd files are normally over a year to 2 years behind

      February 10th, 2012 - 1:49pm

The “brilliant restoration” argument doesn’t work though because it is exactly the same episodes that are normally released on DVD, these just have the extras removed, and not everyone is interested in them or in the cases of most later DVDs many of the extras are put on youtube or the likes anyway.

    • Gordon

      February 10th, 2012 - 11:57pm

It doesnt have the same restoration work. The dvd files are unrestored ie picture and sound.

Dvd extras do appear on you tube but normally its only clips. Full extras sometimes gets put on but most get pulled.

Also never understood why people would wait till april 2013 to get for example season 6 episodes in the dvd files when you could get the whole season now and cheaper too

    • CatManWho

      February 11th, 2012 - 8:29am

Some people are not waiting, they will have already got the BBC releases when they came out.

Some collectors will be content to have just one copy of “The Eleventh Hour” from season 5 others will have got all eight UK versions. The merchandise companies know that when they release a different edition of something, that there is a given market of collectors who will automatically buy it irrespective of what they already have. A good example is multiple versions of DWM. If there are four different covers, some fans buy all four.

    • Anonymous

      February 11th, 2012 - 4:32pm

Sorry but that is nonsense, the restoration is exactly the same on the standard DVD release as it is on the DVD files.

I have various copies of both releases and they are exactly the same, of course in some cases there have been further re-release with further restoration done on it in that case there will of course be better restoration but in all other cases it is the best quality available.

    • CatManWho

      February 11th, 2012 - 5:58pm

Die hard collectors do not just by the DVDs for differences in features or restoration, but the packaging itself. For example the series 6 standard lenticular release is very different from the Silent packaging which is different again from the half season box sets. I love Doctor Who, but I love Doctor Who merchandise equally, and am happy to eventually get all versions. That to me is what this brilliant web-site is about, collecting Doctor Who to whatever level you choose.

    • Gordon

      February 12th, 2012 - 1:18pm

@annonymos when i contacted them asking whether or not the episodes had restoration work done on them they eventually got back to me and said no.

    • Gordon

      February 12th, 2012 - 1:23pm

@Catmanwho I classify myself as a die hard collector of the dvds(i have all classic and new releases and plan to collect all future releases) but i feel buying multiple versions of the same release is simply put a step too far. You only need 1 copy. when its on a shelf it wont matter what it looks like. Thats just putting more money into bbc.Only exception is the revisitation titles and new era stuff which has extras that wasnt on the original release or vanilla release in the case of the new era stuff.

    • CatManWho

      February 13th, 2012 - 7:52am

I was originally trying to suggest why DVD Files sells. I know fans who also quote “one copy will do” but will still buy this magazine as it “forces them to rewatch the stories”. I know other fans who buy the BBC releases but don’t watch them or only watch the extras. I have had very limited time in the past and usually do not watch the extras, spending the time I do have on the next story. I never watched “Confidential” as it was too soon after the episode and spoil it for me. All fans are different and pursue fandom in different ways.

    • cjayp33

      February 13th, 2012 - 9:54pm

people like me will wait if they now series 5/6 is coming as they don’t want to get it now and have two copies and yes I know the dvd files option is more expensive.
I suspect also that a lot of readers like me have not seen the classic series at, all so am grateful for them including them. Like most people especially if they are young will be interested like me more in the episode then dvd extras (which I rarely watch). Also apparently this is selling really well.

    • Anonymous

      February 13th, 2012 - 10:07pm

To @Gordon, they don’t do restoration work, because it has already been done for the original release. The Five Doctors for instance is the “updated” DVD version with the extra scenes for example, not the broadcast version that would later be released.

But the classics are massively cheaper, if you don’t want the extras, so overall it’s cheaper especially if you subscribe taking an extra pund off.

The only problem is it was originally inteded as a twelve parter, but was split into Frontier in Space and Planet of the Daleks.

It doesn’t make much difference and it’s hard to notice now, but if you watch Frontier in Space first this story makes slightly more sense, so you might want to have a rewatch when that story comes later this year.

Its neither 110 or 117 according to the publishers when someone spoke to them 2 weeks ago. Seems strange they would backtrack.

110 is the num,ber they have given and confirmed releases for.

They certainly don’t have any plans for TheImpossible Astronaut to The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe yet as they don’t give any “references” to it in the episode guide section (they mention the episodees but there are never any directions to those pages being there in the future, just mentions of the episodes).

Prevalently it is still very popular which is why we are going past 110 issues as this will be featuring series 6, all of the classic series episodes (i presume ones that have still to be released will be included) and will be including all future new who series (i.e 7, 8 etc) until they run out of classic stores. This comes from people who have spoken to the publisher. If you want news on this join the facebook group for this as there are a number of people commenting.
