Doctor Who Magazine Special 66 50 Years of the Fourth Doctor

Available to order from www.panini.co.uk

June marks the 50th anniversary of the Fourth Doctor’s first appearance. Doctor Who Magazine is celebrating with an 84-page Special Edition, packed with all-new features, interviews, infographics and fiction.

“Tom Baker made such an extraordinary impact that, to some people, he will always be the Doctor,” says editor Marcus Hearn. “In our latest Special Edition we’ve interviewed many of the actors who appeared alongside him, including Hilary Ryan, who’s never spoken about Doctor Who before. As well as casting new light on some of the series’ best-loved episodes, we’ve also added an exclusive adventure to the Fourth Doctor’s journey with a new short story by Christopher H Bidmead. There’s something here for everyone who loves the Fourth Doctor!”

Highlights of the new DWM Special Edition include:

  • A joint interview with Louise Jameson (Leela) and Matthew Waterhouse (Adric), who remember their TARDIS travels with the Fourth Doctor.
  • Interviews with Fourth Doctor guest stars Gareth Armstrong (The Masque of Mandragora), Janet Ellis (The Horns of Nimon), Hilary Ryan (The Invasion of Time) and Guy Siner (Genesis of the Daleks).
  • June Hudson is reunited with the famous burgundy coat she designed for Tom Baker’s Doctor – courtesy of the collector who now owns it.
  • Dave Gibbons looks back on the seminal artwork he created for the golden age of Fourth Doctor comics.
  • A timeline of the Fourth Doctor’s television journey from 1974 to 1981, with details of the off-screen adventures in between.
  • Light-hearted guides to the Fourth Doctor’s numerous costumes and everything that came out of his pockets.
  • Our choice of 20 moments that define the Fourth Doctor, including classic scenes from The Ark in Space, The Deadly Assassin, City of Death and more.
  • Plus… new fiction by Christopher H Bidmead, who wrote the Fourth Doctor’s final television story, Logopolis.

Surprised that a fourth doctor special doesn’t include a new interview with Tom, even a very brief one. Yes, I know he is getting on in years, but still seems to be quite dynamic taking part in signings etc. even if attending events is now longer possible. It just seems something of a glaring gap in the content.

Sadly it is also a reminder of how many companions from the era are no longer with us – Liz, Ian, Mary, Nick.

And I imagine a contribution from Lalla would be a bit awkward.

I suppose this Baker special probably explains why we got 1971 so soon after 1973, and not 1977 or 79 which they might have considered a 4th Doctor overkill. We haven’t had a second Tom year since issue 1 of the chronicles.
