Available to order while stocks last from www.vworpvworp.co.uk

The long-awaited fourth issue of acclaimed Doctor Who comics and artwork fanzine Vworp Vworp! will be released in September (pre orders next week).

This 172-page issue focuses on the Doctor’s strange adventures in TV Comic, Countdown and TV Action.

Trods, Daleks, Ugrakks, Quarks, The Pied Piper, Cybermen, Kleptons… For 15 years, Doctor Who fought them all with the help of his plucky grandchildren John and Gillian, and more familiar faces like Jamie, Liz, Sarah Jane, Leela and, of course, Santa Claus!

We celebrate the weird and often wonderful TV Comic, Countdown and TV Action strips, and the equally colourful characters behind them.

This issue, lavishly illustrated with original artwork and never-before-seen photos, includes:

  • Interviews with artists Bill Mevin, Harry Lindfield and Martin Asbury
  • We celebrate of the lives of the late artists John Canning, Neville Main, Gerry Haylock and Frank Langford, written with the full cooperation of their families
  • Scripters Roger Noel Cook and David Motton write about their Doctor Who work
  • Profiles of the strip’s other writers, artists and editors, including Tom Woodman, Alan Fennell, Dennis Hooper, Patrick Williams and Dick Millington
  • Brand new comic strips: the First Doctor, John and Gillian must avert The Trod Invasion of Earth (written by Steve Lyons and drawn by Shawn Van Briesen), the Second Doctor faces the Return of the Piper (by Tim Quinn and Paul Cowan) and there’s trouble for the Third Doctor, in the epic Revenge of the Ugrakks (by George Mann and Paul Cooke)
  • The creation of Doctor Who Magazine’s homage to TV Comic, The Land of Happy Endings
  • Memories of growing up with the comics, and designing a competition-winning monster

Also in this issue:

  • Two of its three artists discuss the making of much-loved book Doctor Who and the Daleks Omnibus, released through Marks & Spencer in 1976
  • Collecting original Doctor Who artwork
  • The life of prolific illustrator John Woods, who worked on many Dalek and Doctor Who books in the 1960s
  • … and much more!

Plus, these exciting FREE GIFTS:

  • ‘Sugar Pats’, an authentic 1960s Doctor Who/TV Comic-themed cereal packet

My copy turned up today. Ordered cover A but got sent Cover B. Amazing stuff as usual but the end of one of the strips is a tad dubious!

yes a lot have, i think it more like a one man band sending out piles of the stuff, just takes a while to get through all the orders i would think.

They had a slight delay with printing the Sugar Pats boxes, so they’re about a week behind. There’s a pic on Twitter of all the boxes of books the poor devil still has to send out (and yes, he’s working solo). I don’t think they expected it to be so popular! But their reputation kept increasing, so they have lots of new buyers this time – me included. They have enough copies for everyone though, thankfully (Zavvi take note!).

I suppose they’d need an official licence, but if they did prints of the cover art I think I could soon be parted from my money.

I’ve bought an issue with the Countdown style cover, but I might have to buy them all. They are just beautiful, aren’t they? And packed with info that you didn’t even know you needed to know.

How about releasing figurines of the Todds, the Ugrakks, the Vogans (mekon lookalikes) and the Dalek emperor all of which appeared in TV Comic, Countdown or TV21 during the golden years of Who comic strips.

Now I just want Big finish to bring the Trods back and into their Audio Stories along with the Quarks!

After much indecision went with the 70s cover! A tough choice because all three are incredible.

Really can’t wait for this to arrive. It is a wonderful publication and I love the attention to detail that goes into each issue. The only thing I’m not looking forward to is the fit of jealousy I’m going to have at those lucky enough to have bought original artwork!

I remember seeing loads of John Ridgeway Sixth Doctor pages being sold for a tenner each around 2000ish. I still don’t get why I didn’t buy any, and they were from stories reprinted in the Voyager graphic novel, which I’d really enjoyed! What a chump I was!

As someone once said you don’t regret the things you do buy but the things you don’t!

I’ve always liked John Ridgeway’s art so I would have snapped some up but sometimes indecision takes over or you think what would I do with them. A tenner each though!

Anyway enjoy the zine – I know I will.

It was a real “brain fart” moment, something I had too many of! At least with Vworp! Vworp! I’ve been able to buy the bumper volume of the first two issues I missed, even though it’s not quite as good as the two separate ones. Public Health Notice: Dithering and procrastinating are bad!

Personal choice, but for me got to be the third doctor on the Bessie bike. So 70s chopper and so imaginative. These are alway such a read.

Is this about pre DWM? I realized when I saw the doctor’s satchel and gun!

It’s much broader than the DWM comic strip. It focuses on every era of ‘Who’ in comic form and the cover is referencing the 60’s TV Comic strip, which could, on occasion, stray quite far from how the Doctor was portrayed on TV hence the laser pistol!

The amount of research and care that goes into ‘Vworp Vworp!” makes it a really mammoth effort and the folk that put it together don’t work on it full-time. Each issue is also around 200 pages long so while it may be not come out that often it is very much worth the wait between issues.

That’s even before you think about all the work that goes into the beautiful extras that have come with each issue.

Very, very excited to see this!

Along with ‘Nothing at the End of the Lane’ this is one of the very best fanzines ever. Can’t wait to see what surprises are in store!

Speaking about fanzines, it’s great to see ‘Private Who’ is coming back too!
