The Ark in Space Special Edition (DVD)

The Ark in Space Special Edition (DVD)

The TARDIS arrives on an apparently deserted and deactivated space station Nerva, otherwise known as the Ark, orbiting Earth in the far future. There the Doctor, Sarah and Harry discover the last survivors of the human race held in suspended animation, Earth having been evacuated thousands of years earlier when solar flares threatened to destroy all life.

The station has been visited by a Wirrn, an insect life form, which has laid its eggs in the solar stacks and absorbed the body and mind of one of the sleeping humans. The Doctor’s reactivation of the station’s systems causes the humans to start to revive. Their leader, nicknamed Noah, becomes infected by one of the emerging larvae and is slowly taken over.

The Doctor and his friends meanwhile gain the trust of the other humans, now led by a med-tech named Vira. Together they manage to lure the hatched Wirrn insects into a shuttle craft and then eject it into space.

In a final act of humanity, Noah – by this time fully transformed into a Wirrn – deliberately neglects to set the shuttle’s stabilisers, causing it to explode.

Still listed nearly everywhere else (Play, Galaxy 4) as 25th Feb. If it does get pushed to April I wonder if they’ll bring another release forward to fill the gap? Terror of the Zygons for February anyone?

just had a thought. as there doing a green death s.e. with sja death of the doctor, does anyone think that theyll do a s.e. of something like hand of fear so they can put sja wedding of sarah jane smith as an extra?

      January 31st, 2013 - 7:49am

l would like that so the 2 doctor episodes from the Sarah Jane Series are included somewhere in the Doctor Who Range so l won’t have to buy them online or on any boxset since l don’t exactly watch any of the Spin-offs from Doctor Who. However Death of the Doctor did have many classic era scenes and as Katy Manning’s last scene with the Doctor was in that episode it was fitting to fit it in with the Special Edition. Also it gives more incentive to buy the Special Edition.

    • gordon

      January 31st, 2013 - 7:57am

Doubt it as the main selling point of having the extra is the commentary with rtd and katy manning. They wont have the option with wedding of sarah jane as elizabeth sladen is sadly no longer here. If they were going to do it they would have done it for ark in space. There really isnt any reason to do a hand of fear se. Its got a good commentary, the picture quality is fine and its got very good extras

    • celestial toymaker

      January 31st, 2013 - 9:40am

the hand of fear se could be a tribute to lis this would be good as an extra

    • gordon

      January 31st, 2013 - 10:07am

Tribute or not the dvd doesnt need revisiting for the reasons ive already mentioned. If you are going to revisit titles just to put tributes on them its going to get silly. Key to time se just for a tribute to mary tamm. The deadly assasin se just to put a tribute to bernard horsfall. colony in space se just to put on a tribute to roy skelton. It will become rediculus

    • McGann is the Doctor

      January 31st, 2013 - 12:57pm

They’re doing a Green Death SE with death of the Doctor ?

      What ? ❗

    • pathdw98

      January 31st, 2013 - 1:29pm

well if not hand of fear, could this be with terror of the zygons or any sarah jane story revisited? just find it strange that they’ll put death of the doctor in the main doctor who range and not the wedding episodes.

    • drjakeyoung

      January 31st, 2013 - 5:19pm

actually, thinking about it they could do a SE of the mind robber, and not just for a tribute to Bernard Horsfall. There is a lot they could do to improve this DVD, and i know because I’ve got it!

    • gordon

      January 31st, 2013 - 10:03pm

Cant go on zygons as its extras are already clear and there really isnt Elizabeth Sladen storys left that need a revisit. The point of death of the doctor on the green death SE is to have rtd and katy manning do a commentary on her return story. If she was still here it would be school reunion not Wedding that would get the commentary as that is her return story. Even though i have a few ideas for extras for mind robber i would be suprised if it got the se treatment as in its picture quality its a fine release

Just out of interest, would anybody rebuy any of the 2002-2005 dvds, say earthshock etc…,if they were repackaged with all new covers. It might seem incredibly pointless to those who bought the originals that dont need revisits, but i do love the new artwork on the ones they are revisiting. it is tempting all the same.

You could just ask designers who made the covers, or you could make your own and change the cover l’m pretty sure however that if you wanted to buy a Special Edition there would be nothing special about it compared to the original so making your own cover would be wiser

    • Lachlan

      December 26th, 2012 - 10:24pm

l’ve always wondered what could happen with Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant Doctors in the future lets say about a couple of decades being repackaged as part of the Classic Series except with added on Documentaries like on the Classic Series DVD’s such as Merchandise Mania looking into the Merchandise and Books that have come out through the Ninth Doctors Life

    • THE ERGON

Its a possibility. I,d like the companions of their time to be included on these said documentaries as well. however to your earlier comment, i don,t think making my own covers would be the same as an official cover release.thanks all the same.

    • gordon

      December 26th, 2012 - 11:05pm

It would cost money to commision new dvd cover and manufactuer new picture discs to replace the original. Considering how some are put off by the current revisits which has a new restoration and extras i can see even more beinf put off by a new cover and zero new content and it would probably lose money. There are plenty of good fan covers out there by looking up google anyway

    • THE ERGON

      December 26th, 2012 - 11:20pm

@mcganisthedoctor Except they are pretty much out of stories they can improve with their current technology. Beyond the 5 revisits due in 2013 there really isnt any left that they can improve

    • drjakeyoung

      December 28th, 2012 - 7:00pm

Some point 2013.Steve roberts mentioned that the deadline for its completion and handed in is 8th february. As things are normally handed in at least 4-6 months in advance (for legal clearance etc) dont expect it till june at the earliest. As the june 24th and july 15th release are already taken with zygons and the spearhead blu ray the earliest we can possibly expect it is 3rd june and 5th august

I can not wait for the ice warriors to be released I love the ice warriors there one of the best villains of classic doctor who. They maybe will release it when the ice warriors return in series 7 after the episode is shown. I neared already that they have done all the special features, comentry and the clear quality of the story. This story is amazing and hopefully it would be released soon as it’s the last ice warrior story that is needed!hopefully the new ice warriors keep the same design as the classic did.and make them evil again!

      December 18th, 2012 - 10:42pm

Well the dalek invasion of earth and earthshock in Australia if u look on the DVD release has a discusting image of the doctor who logo. And it would be fantastic to have these stories revisited in single release or in a box set. The resurrection of the daleks didn’t need a special edition but they released it anyway. And the original release was after these too stories in 2004! Anyway the 2 entertain has already said that all DVDs that haven’t been licences by 2 entertain will be revisited on special edition. What DVDs need special editions?

    • gordon

      December 18th, 2012 - 11:14pm

Dvd cover alone is not how bbcww decide how things are revisited. Its how much restoration improvement and how much extras that can be added. Resurection was revisited as the original release didnt have the 2 part version that was the version that was original broadcast. BBCWW have not said they plan to revisit every non 2e story. Maybe 2 doctors might get a revisit (pq slightly improved plus making of) but thats about it. The rest are either missing a making of or picture quality but not both

      December 23rd, 2012 - 9:47am

I’m also from Austraia! but l have to disagree a cover is not important in a SE however it is an added benefit from Restoration to the original. By the way Gordon do you expect Pyramids of Mars or Horror of Fang Rock to get a Special Edition?

    • Lachlan

      December 23rd, 2012 - 9:51am

l’m trying to buy 2006 to later releases from now on till the dvd range finishes so l possibly won’t waste money on an earlier release that will become a Special Edition

    • gordon

I know I’m gonna buy it, I’m mad, but not convinced about buying it. Some of the re-releases of late have been a disappointment especially as some of the original extras are not kept on the re-releases (I know all the nonsence about contracts, bla, bla, bla). Unless of course Tom has done a new commentary for this. Shame he hasn’t for Terror of the Zygons commentary though…. but that’s another story.

What they have added to tomb and 3 docs more than makes up for what they couldnt get clearance to use. Both have been out for almost a year so they are hardly the recent revists of late. Ark in space se wont have the news interview with tom that was on the original but as it is also on revenge where it natuarly fits (the news article was recorded at wookey caves) its no major loss

Bummer it has the SPECIAL EDITION label on the spine, it ruins the collection really, why couldn’t they of thought of it when they were releasing the first SE like revisitations 1

Really? Here in New Zealnd we don’t have reversible covers, although I don’t mind the purple BBC logo I don’t like the SE under the title (on the spine)

Wonderful cover! Simple, and yet very striking. Although I am wondering what a “special addition” is…

They just tidy up the picture and audio a little bit, and then add on a few more special features, like an improved documentary/making of and other bits and pieces. There are a few other special editions out now aswell. Have you not got them?

Fantastic cover, Can’t wait for 2013’s DVDs! I love special editions! A chance to see stories in a new light! And, Ark in Space has always been a fave of mine, and it’s nice to see it finally get the DVD treatment it deserves!
