set-13

ut

Its that time of year again with SDCC 2016 about to start

Wednesday saw previews night between 6-9 pm, that’s 2-5am in the morning for people in the UK.

From what we can see nothing new was on show.

It starts on Thursday at 9.30am which is 5.30pm in the UK so no late night waiting for any information.

If anything is on show it should soon become clear.

The only Doctor Who items we know of so far are the 2 Titans, Ghost 12th Doctor and Glitter Tardis, Titan Comics, an electronic 20 questions Tardis, 5.5 “x 7” giant mug and Rory’s Story Cubes.

This year we have noticed the “exclusive” title has been dropped in many cases and replaced with “first to market” which means it is only sold there first.

I suspect all eyes (where Doctor Who is concerned) will be on the Underground Toys Stand where, assuming its on show, something “big” is coming (and no its not the mug)…

Seems as though this set is sdcc exclusive. I’m probably wrong but that’s what it looks like to me.

Aaand I’ll almost certainly buy it if only for red jacket Pertwee.

Actually, though, I’m quite hyped for some of the other figures as well. Sepia 1st, grey haired 2nd and shades of blue 6th are all ringing my bell. And I’ve been wanting a navy or purple jumper 9 for years now. I don’t understand the other colour changes if it means the figures aren’t screen accurate, mind. Still, red jacket Pertwee. With frogging. Huzzah!

Why the secrecy, though? This is EXACTLY what Underground/Character should have been promoting in the run – up to SDCC – a definitive, updated Doctor figure set. If I manage to get hold of this, I might consider selling my orher Doctor figures. Well, with the exception of standard release NOTD 8th. I prefer the clean, unbloodied version.

I just hope the humungousness of the packaging doesn’t put FP/TRU off from carrying it.

I agree! I would personally buy this set for Pertwee – what a costume, have wanted that figure for ages.

I love 1, 2, 3, 6 and 8 as 1-3 are great costume varients and missed out on the original Real Time 6th and the 8th Doctor never made it to Australia.

Great set and I hope if this sells well it may see the future re-releases of classic figures hopefully!

The reason they used the old series five Matt smith head is because the figure is from series five, that’s hair he hard. The newer head is from series 6 and onwards. Though, I don’t see why they didn’t just repaint the series 6 11th doctor, give him the red bow tie and blue shirt, that would be simple.

Yeah that’s what I thought, It’s not as if Matt’s face IRL actually looked different in S5 to how it looked in S6, it was just an improvement of his likeness which I think they got spot on!

Did they use the old Matt Smith sculpt for cost saving reasons or just because? The paint job is improved, just seems like a step back considering he’s been released with the new head multiple times now, so I don’t see why it isn’t in here!

I can’t understand the complaints and dissappointment, this set looks brilliant!! There is no question in me getting it, we’ve got variants in it that people have wanted for quite some time, and some rarer versions ect, from specific episodes… I think this is one of the best things released in the past couple years

They should have released this before they released a 12th doctor figure on its own, a lot of people seem ok with buying lots of extra stuff just to get something new.

      @ DannyTheNerd
My thoughts exactly, it irks me as well that we only get 5-6 new items a year, tops. Even worse is that more than half of that equation consists of repaints and re-releases.

Yes and his trousers are painted to be based of the ones he wore in the TV Movie.

    • Luke – Explosive Cookie

      July 22nd, 2016 - 1:23am

The box says Ghost Light for 7 – not TVM.

    • CO enthusiast

      July 22nd, 2016 - 2:28am

      the scarf is different also

shame its not the TV Movie version or at least straight faced with a hat (swappable head)

    • CG

      July 22nd, 2016 - 2:45am

      I wouldn’t have minded a TV Movie 7th Doctor

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      July 22nd, 2016 - 8:21am

Luke then again the Third Doctor is wearing a bow tie with his his outfit and is supposed to be based off the costume he wore in The Three Doctors yet on the box it says he’s from The Time Monster and the picture they’ve used is from Day of The Daleks. The Sonic Screwdriver accesory included with Seven is also evident it is partially based on his appearance from the TV Movie even though it isn’t 100% accurate.

    • CO enthusiast

      July 22nd, 2016 - 9:52am

Yes, there are clear gestures towards the TV movie.

Feels like a missed opportunity as we may not see such released unless there is a new on screen appearance by the seventh doctor akin to NOTD which feels unlikely.

A tv movie doctor possibly with straight face and hat (as a swappable head) would have also liberated current figure owners in one go.

There are many positives about the set but also missed opportunities, of those this is a sad one as it depicts his final on screen appearance.

    • booboo

      July 22nd, 2016 - 9:57am

does anyone know if the TV movie is covered by the licence, i thought there were issues at one time

    • CO enthusiast

      July 22nd, 2016 - 10:07am

I heard similar things, although have never been sure.

One version was that rights were only secured on ‘the doctor’ hence Paul McGann and his screwdriver which prohibited use of Sylvester McCoys image…
However, as he is also the Doctor, a doctor this seems odd unless it is based on how characters were referred to explicitly in the script.

I can’t add anything useful on this one as there has been much rumour and speculation.

However, the TV Movie did celebrate its 20th anniversary (sort of) this year, a nice route in perhaps. Something for the 7th Doctor Era would have been really nice.

    • 100,000BC

      July 22nd, 2016 - 11:28am

I would imagine that the BBC managed to hold on to the rights for the eighth Doctor himself and the costume (considering Big Finish covers have used it and they don’t have a TV movie licence) – in which case they have also used the TV movie 7th Doctor as well so who knows?

    • 100,000BC

      July 22nd, 2016 - 11:32am

The main problem with a TVM 7th figure I imagine is the need for a new head and costume sculpt – given that we already have 7th Doctor figures and the movie isn’t massively popular and the costume isn’t exactly used a lot, perhaps they just don’t want to take the risk.

    • CO enthusiast

      July 22nd, 2016 - 7:35pm

A straight faced doctor with hat would be a quick effective compromise.

Not entirely screen accurate as slightly young perhaps based on current sculpts, then again as seen on the b&m eleventh doctor paint apps can be highly effective over entirely new sculpts.

Creates options for other figures with a choice of head.
      Closure for the fans perhaps

And yes if big finish have used tv movie seventh doctor images then why not.
I can see making other characters more challenging regarding rights.

I see the point about demand, but surely this sort of set creates those sorts of opportunities; to create useful variants perhaps.

The gestures already made kind of suggests people are aware of this gap in the collection.

Failing that, make one with a jacket where the outer colour peels off, revealing the proper paint job…. Or not 🙂

    July 21st, 2016 - 11:42pm

People seem to be complaining about this, but I personally think this is great, this is exactly what we’ve been asking for! Yes, I know, there’s no new sculpt, which sucks, but at Least most of these characters have been given a new paint job, (Which looks great.) But we were never going to get new sculpted figures with a box set like this. I don’t know, I just feel we should be grateful for what we get, given that we’ve hardly had anything this year.

But anyway, any idea when this comes out?

Okay, lets all just calm down for a minute!

Yes, we were expecting something more worthwhile (new sculpts/figures) BUT who knows? If this sells well we might get a couple more figures when they release the next wave? This isn’t a bad thing, not even close. We could have had nothing at all! Yeah, they could have given us completely new figures with better likeness and articulation but at least this means we might get to see an Osgood or a new 12th doctor in red or with the Hoodie or a better Clara…? This is thirteen figures! we could see this generate enough income for the company to create a new wave of fully original figures! People really need to start seeing things in a more beneficial light! not only that, it’s also a great opportunity for those who might have missed out on the original release. So lets praise UT for actually giving us this and think about what this could mean in the future!

We’ll see more, just not at SDCC and they aren’t really lazy (though some choices are a tad silly) they could have just called quits on the line because to be completely frank with you, no one buys them anymore, except a select amount of collectors really and they are doing what they can with what they can afford. People have actually asked for ages for many of these variants.

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2016 - 10:49pm

pretty irrelevant statement being as this is from an Underground Toys sales stand at SDCC

you miss understand, they are only showing items you can buy from them right now, they are not displaying any item you will be able to buy in the future that amy not be ready for market yet (as in the collectors series last year)

its a sales stand not a preview stand

It looks a different set up.

  • The real master

    July 21st, 2016 - 10:33pm

This should be £50, no more, they are having a laugh if they think this is worth 150, that means for a couple of repaints and two extra figures, we have to pay £100 more, these figures are not worth £15 each, the sooner character learns, over pricing and creating a limited number of a product is a bad way to make money

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 10:38pm

I think that they should bite the bullet with a companions set, half of them could easily be straight rereleases and the whining about classic companions could easily be stopped, most people just want at least one companion per Doctor (and a Sarah Jane)

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2016 - 10:39pm

why is everyone saying 150, do you no know the difference between a dollar and pound sign

the last one was £50 with only 11 figures and made in much bigger quantities

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 10:41pm

I honestly think that we are just milking it, I knew it would be less in the UK but I think 100 is still pretty bad, though it will likely work out the way the B&M sets are. I just don’t trust it because the Lego dimensions packs for example, a standard fun pack costs 11.99 in the US which is about £9 here, yet we pay £14.99

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2016 - 10:46pm

US dont pay 20% Vat ro start with, and it makes a big difference where stuff is imported to / from / how and where the company is based

look back at any past tos r us exclusive product and then look how much its cost in the USA

I am of two minds about this set, there are some lovely reprints in there, I just hope each figure is tweaked in some way that we can’t see because of the image quality. I hope the Fifth Dr is the muddied version because it’s hard to tell from the image, and the same goes for 9’s navy jumper: I just hope there’s some form of repaint on 11 because the original series 5 version has been re-packaged and re-released to death.

This was on the Outpost Who forum from one of the guys behind the Doctor Who line (he’s a sculptor for Design Work’s Windsor)

“So I just had confirmation that some production samples of something pretty awesome are in the post, so I expect you’ll all get an announcement pretty soon…. #stillmakingdoctorwhotoys”

This 13 Doctors set is clearly not a production sample if there are sets there available to buy, so something else will be revealed soon (not at Comic Con though).

production samples are items of the production line, the end result as it were

the 1st few are are usually sent out to the manufactures and other people involved and the rest to the retailer

I believe 9 is from Parting of The Ways and 12 (according to the box) is Deep Breath, despite having a blackish shirt.

12 definitely isn’t from Deep Breath no matter what the box says and I thought Nine wore the black jumper in Parting of the Ways?

Eccleston did wear the black jumper in Bad Wolf & The Parting of the Ways – in fact, that was the only story he ever wore it in. If the figure is indeed a navy variant, it’s from The Unquiet Dead, Aliens of London & World War Three.

According to the description from the creator, his jumper is dark purple and comes from parting of the ways, which is obviously inaccurate

The only story the purple jumper was worn for was The Empty Child & The Doctor Dances.

3 is from day of the daleks

Three wore his rolled collar maroon jacket (which he never wore a bow tie with in any of its appearances) in Day of the Daleks.
He wore a bow tie with his similar, but different, notched collar rust red jacket twice – once briefly in Planet of the Spiders, as well as for the entirety of The Three Doctors.

Is the third doctor the only new variant?

They are all new in some way apart from 12, the most obvious variants are 3 (red jacket), 2 (grey hair), 6 (audio costume) and 1 (brown waistcoat)

Ah yeah, now I have had a closer look also 9 seems to have a blue jumper. Mind you, 6 is a re-release but a welcome one (as is 4).

Six isn’t rerelease. The first blue six was based on real time and he coat was one complete colour of blue whereas this one is based on an audio costume and has different shades of blue
