set-13

ut

Its that time of year again with SDCC 2016 about to start

Wednesday saw previews night between 6-9 pm, that’s 2-5am in the morning for people in the UK.

From what we can see nothing new was on show.

It starts on Thursday at 9.30am which is 5.30pm in the UK so no late night waiting for any information.

If anything is on show it should soon become clear.

The only Doctor Who items we know of so far are the 2 Titans, Ghost 12th Doctor and Glitter Tardis, Titan Comics, an electronic 20 questions Tardis, 5.5 “x 7” giant mug and Rory’s Story Cubes.

This year we have noticed the “exclusive” title has been dropped in many cases and replaced with “first to market” which means it is only sold there first.

I suspect all eyes (where Doctor Who is concerned) will be on the Underground Toys Stand where, assuming its on show, something “big” is coming (and no its not the mug)…

Which picture? The only collectors series box I’m seeing is the one with the 13 doctors figures in it.

They should call this the (Tom) Bakers dozen doctors collectors set (13) and popped a curator figure in too as a bonus.

This is basically following the same rules as the B&M sets but with 13 figures instead of 3: No new moulds, some complete repaints, the rest with just one or two minor paint revisions. This makes me think that the pricing difference will be similar between America and the UK – a little more than $10 per figure in the states but (possibly) as little as £5 per figure in the UK – making it £65. The previous one had new 4th and 8th Doctor sculpts and a re-working of the 10th Doctor’s head as well.

this set wont stand £100+ in the UK

      gut feeling £69.99

you have to remember the 1st set was mass market and made in huge quantities so a couple of new sculpts were feasible

    • 100000BC

      July 21st, 2016 - 10:11pm

My feeling exactly. My point with the reference to the previous set is that it may have needed to be sold for a higher price.

I agree that in the UK currently, neither the kids’ nor the collectors’ markets would be willing to pay £100+ (most parents of casual viewers wouldn’t spend that much and many of the more ‘serious’ collectors already have at least 3-4 of these figures)

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 10:13pm

A parent would be reluctant enough with the Curator set’s price, there’s no way that they are going to pay 100 quid for that, they would just find them all cheap on eBay instead.

Is this the ‘big thing’ a batch of figures one of which appears to be repainted ..the others all having been released before they haven’t even put pat in the fur coat that was touted for release years ago. Hopeless.

    Reply
    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 9:04pm

Quite a few are repainted and some have minor paint differences but none of it is anything new sculpt wise, though most are slightly different from their previous release, not that it exactly warrants an actual variant.

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2016 - 9:11pm

your not going to get major tooling variants or brand new sculpts in what will I’m sure turn out to be a set costing a few pounds a figure in the Uk

that option came and went a few years ago when retailers didn’t what it.

I’m sure they wont be producing anywhere near the same numbers of this set as the original either

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 9:15pm

I think the fact that they didn’t include a red velvet 12 leaves a bad taste in my mouth, we’ve gotten to the point that we would welcome a simple repaint of the White shirt 12 with open arms, nevertheless it’s decent enough.

My only gripe with the set is theres not many variants. And it could have been easy to do.

    I don’t own the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th 8th and 12th doctors from this set but others i do so i would have liked:-

11 – to be the blue TRU varient
10 – maybe aged or or time crash set variant
9 – hologram would have been good
    War – jacketless
    5 – burned costume

      Planet 1st
      Two Doctors 2nd
      Time Monster 3rd
      Logopolis 4th
      Five Doctors 5th
      Real Time 6th (illustration variant)
      Ghost Light 7th
      Night of the Doctor 8th
Day of the Doctor War Doctor
      Parting of the ways 9th
      Shakespeare code 10th
      Beast below 11th
Deep breath 12th (although the one in the display set is not from deep breath)

    • DoctorSong2016

The sixth Doctor variant is more accurate to an audio costume than to Real Time.

    • Aidan Gula

      July 21st, 2016 - 9:28pm

The 9th Doctor does have a blue jumper, and what do you mean by Deep Breath Twelfth? Do you mean it should be a white shirt?

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 9:30pm

It’s listed as being from deep breath on the box, but for some reason it’s a black shirt, I checked all the possible deep breath costumes and they are

      Night gown
      Hobo
      Clockwork man suit
      White shirt

I’m not sure where they went wrong with this…

Absolutely over the moon with this! It looks fantastic!

1st Dr – Amazing re-paint. Much different to the others we have
2nd Dr – Great to have an older version of him with the grey hair
3rd Dr- Brilliant! another new jacket!
4th Dr – A well needed re-release of this figure!
5th Dr- I think he has mud down his side. Great unique variant!
6th Dr – Looks lovely! Really like that colour
7th Dr – Looks like a strait forward re-release. Nothing too special
War Dr – He really needed a re-release in some form.
8th Dr – If those are cuts on his face then great! If not, a Hard to find figure had just gotten a re-release
9th Dr – Blue Jumper? Excellent.
10th Dr – Oooo, A white shirt! Haven’t had a shirt variant since the time crash set
11th Dr – Can’t make out if there are any variants with him. Will be interesting to find out
12th Dr – Again, too dark to make out if there are any variants on him.

This is actually a very good set, bit disappointing that the 8th doctor is the night of the doctor variant (I would have preferred a variant of him in his TV movie costume but with the gold cravat like in the comics before he swapped his green coat for a blue coat). The variants of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th doctors look great, (been waiting for the three doctors 3rd doctor variant a long time) and the new version of the 6th doctor’s blue costume is a much welcome addition, and I’m greatful that they’ve rerelease the 7th doctor in his brown coat as I missed it the first time around.
All in all this is a good set and hopefully this is just the start of new figures to come and breath new life back into this line

Ok so I either spend about £70 or £80 on this. A set with about 3 or 4 figures I actually want – or I save my money and wait for Underground toys to release a new wave of figures which will hopefully include a new 12th doctor variant (red jacket or tshirt and guitar) and a 2013 cyberman.

So…I think I’m gonna go for the latter.

Its a doubled edged sword, if you don’t buy this CO/UT will not profit and will believe no one is interested at all, therefore, that, along with a lack of funds, will bring a permanant end to the line.

I know it sucks, but the survival of the line means relying on the selling of rereleases to build up funds

If you zoom in on twelve the black ends with a v shape (not like a shirt) and then there’s a bit of white (like how he sometimes wears a shirt under is jumper, although he’s never worn that combination on screen before?) it might just be a black shirted twelve though because the quality isn’t very good

When you think about it if one figure is now £15, 13 should be £195 and I’ve spent loads of money on single figures. I am definitely gonna get this!

    • Anonymous

      July 21st, 2016 - 8:39pm

$150 equals £113.58 apparently. If that is the final price, then that is just silly. This set isn’t worth that much at all. I’m quite disappointed. It just reaks of laziness and cheapness. If this, and the Missy repaint, is all that we’re getting this year, then it is one very sad year to be a Whovian indeed.

    • booboo

      July 21st, 2016 - 8:47pm

your mathematics dont add up when the B&M sets were on sale last year for $40 (£30.29) yet they were £12.99 in the UK

not difficult to see what’s going on here

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 21st, 2016 - 8:41pm

It’s £15 for new or recent sculpts. They make three B&M for 14.99 and that will obviously be with profit for them as well. So it should really be anywhere between 50 and 70 quid

    • Chris Hadden

      July 21st, 2016 - 8:42pm

Well on the bigger picture, you can see that it says “Numbered Edition 02323” So judging by that zero they may have made at least 10000 of them, otherwise why put the zero at the beginning? Wish someone would ask them how many have been made and if they’ll come out elsewhere later on after SDCC!

  • DannyTheNerd

    July 21st, 2016 - 8:28pm

Hang on. They said thus was a long time coming. Let’s see. 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th war 9th 10th 11th 12th are all re releases and 1st 2nd and 3rd are repaints. So it took them this long to repaint 3 figures. Honestly CO get lazier and lazier by the day. However this is great for new collectors, as it’s all 13 in one set.

The wait was definitely worth it! This set is great, I’ve always wanted to see a 3 doctors 3rd Doctor and I’ve needed a season 18 4th Doctor for my collection. The only figure I am disappointed with is the 12th Doctor because it is the only rerelease in the set and because the black shirt is the wrong colour from time heist, it should be a cyan blue colour. But overall love this set and couldn’t be happier!
