Brand new for Record Store Day 2026, a narrated TV soundtrack of the 1965 serial starring William Hartnell as the Doctor. Comprising two episodes, The Powerful Enemy and Desperate Measures, the story features the debut of companion Vicki, played by Maureen O’Brien who now provides newly recorded linking narration and a bonus behind-the-scenes interview.

The Doctor, Ian (William Russell) and Barbara (Jacqueline Hill) discover a crashed spaceship on the planet Dido in the 25th Century. Survivors Vicki and Bennett are menaced by a terrifying native named Koquillion – or are they? The travellers risk their lives to discover the truth.

Sixty years after its original broadcast, The Rescue is presented for the first time on 140g ‘Rescue Red’ translucent vinyl in a beautifully illustrated outer sleeve depicting Koquillion, plus an illustrated inner sleeve which includes full cast and credits.

That’s a fantastic sleeve ! Simple but striking. The blue vinyl caught me out though. With all that green in the artwork I was expecting green vinyl! There must be quite a few of these vinyl soundtrack releases now. Wish I had started buying them from the start. Bet they look impressive all lined up. I’ve got a decent deck and amp setup so why I never bought these from the first release, Lord knows.

It’s the vinyl version of Bennett. Hes Blue as Koquillian and Red as Bennet. 🙂

Optimal is 22mins it can be stretched to 25-30 mins but with reduced sound quality

It can fit. They say 18-22 mins is best but longer can be fitted on. It does reduce quality but probably not by much.

Queued up at my local store from 5am this morning and snagged the only copy they were allocated. Gotta say the owner, Richard, does make it feel special with free hot drinks and bacon sandwiches for those early morning fans as well as free tote bags, t-shirts and a beer (for those 18+ who do drink) when purchasing.

Currently listening to my copy and so far it’s wonderful. The Rescue has always been a favourite of mine and Vikki is my favourite 60s companion. 100% recommend buying a copy in whatever medium suits you best as it’s well worth it!

As an aside, does anyone have any playback issues with their copy of The Tenth Planet from last year’s RSD? Both my store copy and the replacement copy direct from Demon Music have the same faults in the same places.

Been doing RSD for 15 years and always grateful to get a copy when in that time the participants have grown 5 fold. Glad to hear a collector too queues up.

Not opened any, so cannot comment on 10th Planet fault.

In your opinion, would I appreciate the difference between CD and vinyl with non music releases. I totally get the differences with music.

      @ The Monitor

I think you would appreciate the differences between vinyl and CD, for example, I found the overall pitch of the track was higher, much like it can be with a music vinyl. Vikki’s voice was noticeably higher in pitch compared to the TV audio.

Monitor – for me, there’s kind of zero difference between vinyl and CD for audiobooks. The vinyl soundtracks I’ve bought (I like to get them autographed) are either because they are fav stories or they’ve nice art work for display. Basically. 🙂

….and it’s already on ebay for over £60. I love the idea of RSD, but it’s a bit of a kicker for those of us who support the stores for the rest of the year.

Absolutely agree. No RSD stores near me, but I’m not paying the scalpers £70+ on Ebay for something that was £24.99. Same every year – and sadly spoils the spirit of the day.

      ALAN SILVESTER Hi.

Where did you see this £24,99. Its £26.99 – £29.99 depending on the store selling it. Usually there are some left and they go up for sale around £32.99 on the store website. Officially Monday , but some do Sunday . Lots of online sales at various independent Record stores. + postage (£4-£7.50) depending on your preference or stores safety of Delivery option .

It’s rare to see a 12″ single under £21.99 . Often big names are £24.99.

This is a new release ,not an off the shelf old release. New recording by Maureen O’brien.

Ebay has some at £45.99 which for those in a rush will pay. I wouldn’t buy from ebay until Tuesday to make sure I have checked independent website.

I went to Banquet Records in Kingston today (Sunday) and they had about 10 still there. If you get on their website tomorrow around 8pm, you’ll be able to snag one with quite reasonable p&p

Thanks for the heads-up, Stephen Palmer. Purchased online at Beggars Banquet for £26.99 + £3 postage.

I don’t live near a decent record shop so RSD is a rare experience. I really wanted to go this year as there were a couple of Suede albums I would have liked but unfortunately life got in the way. EBay isn’t an option either. Plenty of copies of both albums up for auction but £65 each ? No way. And that was the cheapest I saw yesterday. Someone has clearly got wishful thinking as he had priced copies of both albums at £100 each. So frustrating.

      April 23rd, 2026 - 4:25pm

There’s simply no need to pay £60 on eBay. Anyone who does so either has enough money not to worry about paying over double the price or they don’t have the initiative to look around online. There are two options for getting it at the correct retail price after RSD:

      1. Go to the websites of record shops on Monday evening. There are always *many* selling them at the correct price who still have them in stock.

      2. Go to Discogs, the world’s largest vinyl cataloguing/marketplace. I’ve checked this minute and their are *oodles* of sellers offering the record for under £30 – including postage.

Why would anyone pay double the amount on eBay when it’s still available so easily at the RRP? All they do is feed these dreadful scalpers and encourage them in their behaviour, taking copies out of the hands of real fans in the queue. If you pay a scalper then you’re part of the problem. Alternatives at half the price exist.

@EvanMarshall Yes I’ll check Discogs. Thanks! Don’t mind paying up to £30. I looked on eBay as I was uploading some old vinyl myself.

    Monsieur G.A. Lapie
Sorry I missed your post in Feb.

Yes. Google official charts vinyl album chart. (Or single chart as it depends what mood they are in) DW does quite well. Considering A ) the Regular Friday releases. B ) The big names artists. It’s wonderful to see DW Vinyl amongst the Crown. And getting a higher placing than some big names.

Being LTD it usually drops down the following week. Except oddly for the zoetrope edition which went up a bit week 2.

Next Friday for the chart for this one. After the main chart has been released.

“I’m delighted that two episodes of The Daleks Master Plan have been recovered by Film is Fabulous, and I very much hope that more lost episodes from this story, and other serials, will be recovered. Now I’m off to spend 45 quid so I can enjoy The Rescue as it was meant to be seen-without the pictures!”

Is RSD always on a Saturday or does it Vary from Year to Year?

Every year a Saturday in April. For RSD. It has become so popular and gives a huge cash boost to Independent record stores.

So popular that they have started a Black Friday RSD( BFRSD) for a 2nd boost much later in the year.

Hello bryan, how does the Friday RSD work out as I should imagine alot of People that would like to Attend would be at Work. I should imagine Saturday would have been more Suitable for both RSD as alot more People could attend that dont have to Work weekends?

RSD organisers’s rules thumb is3rd Saturday of April each year – unless that clashes with Easter weekend in which case they either go a week before or the weekend after. Black Friday – yeah, the releases do come out on a Friday – I’ve never queued for one of those – but some of the releases end up for sale a couple of days later at places like Rough Trade etc online.

I did want to support RSD but where I live we had ONE store participating. Others were miles and miles away (nearest to me was 20miles away) I queued for three hours only to find the shop had only one of the disc I wanted and I had gone hours before I got in the shop. Kind of killed the experience for me.

There are many in your situation mjs. There are now stores (nearest but not always) where you can pre order by ticking the boxes on Web page. Some only for collection but many now post out you get it for RSD price + postage ( usually £3.99 -£4.50)

Just in reply to the comments about Black Friday RSD – it has been running since 2010 sixteen years ago. Just two years after the proper RSD started. As for how it works with people at work – probably in the same way as Black Friday works in any form of retail – you either take the day off or a few hours off or you might miss out on something.

As ever, these Demon/BBC releases have the most gorgeous covers .Never one to be let down. We have gone from beautiful art,to graphic design,a blip with photo covers and back to amazing Art. Oink,Dare, project 16,all delivering .

This is even a newly recorded narration with Maureen O’brien, so a CD is due to at some point (its been listed at A few other country websites)

I adore these releases and actually listen to them far more often then the CDs of old (or new in this case)

Now to get one, without the Daft Ebay prices 20 mins after RSD starts.

Hear, hear (literally) … these *are* a bit of an indulgence, and a bit mad, and completely baffling to some … but equally, they are rather lovely, very listenable and highly addictive – the snap, crackle and pop of the grooves *adds* to the atmos of the Hartnell/Troughton ones. Used to dream – let’s not quite say ‘fantasise’ – about getting the tv soundtracks on vinyl when the tapes were first published, back in the day, the 24min runtime being such a neat fit per side. I was not alone! Any informed intel as to whether this might chart, if that’s even a thing, now. Ta!

One let down for me personally: I don’t much like The Wheel in Space cover. I do wish they’d stuck with the Marco Polo–The Ice Warriors style (like with The Collection) for consistency’s sake, but aside from that one I mentioned they have all looked great in their own way.
