THE FIFTH DOCTOR
1982 – 1984
“That’s the trouble with regeneration. You never quite know what you’re going to get.”
The Fifth Doctor made his first appearance in ‘Logopolis’, a 1981 story, where the Fourth Doctor is mortally wounded in a fall and regenerates. The newly regenerated Doctor, played by Peter Davison, made his full debut in the next story ‘Castrovalva’, which was first aired in January 1982.
In this story, the Fifth Doctor is still weak from his regeneration. The Doctor’s arch-enemy, the Master, ensnares Adric and tries to destroy the TARDIS by sending it back to ‘Event One’, where it will be torn apart in the creation of the galaxy. However, the Doctor manages to jettison a quarter of the TARDIS’ mass just in time, which propels them back to conventional time. With the Doctor still in recovery, Nyssa and Tegan take him to the tranquil town of Castrovalva to recuperate. What they have yet to realise is that this idyllic town is fictitious and is in fact another trap laid down by the Master.
The Fifth Doctor would appear in 69 episodes, spanning over three series, until his regeneration into the Sixth Doctor in ‘The Caves of Androzani’, aired in March 1984. The Fifth Doctor’s companions over this time included Adric, Nyssa, Tegan, Vislor Turlough and Peri.

March 6th, 2025 - 6:37pmYep. Human faces are always weak in this series, they should stick to the monsters really.
The Unlicensed Physician
March 7th, 2025 - 2:10amOr hire a different sculptor, even if only to do the head. (The humans really look out of place next to the other models, which are often excellent.) Then again they still sell out, so they probably don’t see any reason to change – same as the dodgy faces on the Big Chief (RIP) figures, which were inferior to the fan sculpts/3D prints being hawked on fleabay.
