Original VHS cover and details

The TARDIS takes the Doctor and Ace to the planet Segonax, the latest home of the famous Psychic Circus.

But Ace finds the clowns a bit creepy and would much rather stay out in the sun, which may be just as well…

This is no ordinary circus and people come from planets far and wide to audition for the opportunity to take part.

But there’s a darker side to the show – who are the three members of the audience upon whose whims the .performers’ lives depend? And why is the Chief Clown driving a hearse and trying to capture the local youths?

The Doctor decides to investigate further and, while Ace tries to befriend some of the more terrified workers, he realises that the Psychic Circus is really a front for a far older, and deadlier, menace from his past. He and Ace must ward off killer bus conductors, werewolves, *the walking dead and some murderous robot clowns before they can hope to stop an evil from the very dawn of history…

Produced entirely on location, this macabre example of Doctor Who closed the series’ twenty-fifth anniversary and was originally transmitted 14th December 1988 – 4th January 1989

I got a print of the picture on the cover of this DVD (well, the American version with the blue logo and no roundel design) signed by Daniel Peacock, who played Nord in the story.

As a big dr who fan, I still couldn’t find dr who – The Krotons in Asda for two weeks now since its release on 2nd July. There were no sign of it in WHSmith OR Sainsburys Supermarket and these stores are from Farnborough Hampshire. I just hope to see it soon as ‘The Greatest Show In The Galaxy’ will be out in two weeks from tomorrow i.e. 16th July 2012. I found the Krotons a couple of weeks ago in Guildford’s HMV and they charge 15 pounds which is an arm and a leg. I definitely going to wait for it to appear in Asda if possible.

Yes, I noticed my local Asda don’t sell The Krotons. My local HMV are probably selling it for about £16.99. I haven’t checked yet.

    • Gordon

      July 15th, 2012 - 10:39pm

15 quid is not an arm and a leg as the rrp is 19.99. You can get it for 12.99 from play.com http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/31807365/Doctor-Who-Krotons/Product.html?source=9593&_$ja=tsid:11853|prd:95782&awc=1418_1342388039_d9a5f3e4b59c948d16f38b729cb44102
I preorder from hmv.com normally. cheaper than the shops (round about 13 quid for most releases) and most times arrives on the friday before release.

    Looking forward to this release!
Anyways I’ve got £35 for Classic Who DVDs, and I’ve decided I’ll get Revisitations 1 because Caves and Talons are so highly rated.
This means, that because the other single releases are about £7 each, I can get two of them. I want to get the best of Classic Who I haven’t got, which is alot! I have loads of ‘duds’. The trouble is I don’t want to buy stories that will be re-released in Special Editions in the next few years.

C,MON GORDON GET WITH IT. WHAT ABOUT YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE AMBASSADORS RELEASE? AND THE ClAWS AND INFERNO RE-RELEASES?

    • Gordon

      May 25th, 2012 - 9:03am

I already knew about all those but i didnt mention it as those are not coming in box sets (or at least havent been announced as such)as the question was about future box sets. Chris chapman who produced the making of said Ambassadors will be coming out in full colour and its the main feature (unlike dinos where colour ep1 was an alternative version). As the bbfc have passed the extras for it just after the varos se extras im expecting ambassadors round about late sep early october(24 sep,1 oct give or take a week or 2).

    • Gordon

      May 25th, 2012 - 9:20am

The 2 rereleases will be seperate releases going by recent comments from dan hall (no more revisit box sets planned at this time and going more in the direction of seperate rereleases) Inferno will be coming out in 2013. Im happy for it to get rereleased. Restoration methods has come so far since 2006 when it was originally released it should look so much better than the original release. Extras wise im wondering what they could add to that release. Axos i dont really know that much apart from katy manning mentioned it in a tweet.

    • Gordon

      May 25th, 2012 - 11:39am

From what i read due to quality of the 1″ tapes they arent able to do much to improve ghost light for dvd . Wouldnt mind an ark in space reissue aztecs (picture quality looks poor in comparison to later releases) green death (needs a making of to make all pertwee stories have 1). Even though i dont think we will get 1 silver nemises (add the extended vhs version and the making of that was on the vhs)

This looks like a good DVD release, though I’m sorry that Sylvester McCoy is not involved in this story (as with Paradise Towers, Dragonfire and Happiness Patrol). I presume he is busy and not available for the commentaries or any interviews any more – which is a shame. And why no continunity announcements any more? Thankfully I’ve kept mine from the original run. And one last gripe, am I the only one getting fed up with the moderators on the DVDs – I know they’re there to help things along, but this misses the chance for other things said.

I AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS ONE.LET THE ACTORS WHO WERE THERE DO THE TALKING. ALTERNATIVELY GET SOMEONE FROM THE PRODUCTION TEAMETC FROM THE NEW WHO TO GIVE THEIR POINT OF VIEW,NOT JUST SOME FANBOY.

    • Gordon

      May 9th, 2012 - 11:14am

The interviews were recorded were recorded august 2011 which would rule sylvester out as he was in NZ. He actually missed the commentary date by only a couple of weeks as it was recorded april 2011. @anonymos i take it you are refering to toby hadoke who mods most of the stories these days. He is more than just a fanboy. He is actually quite well known for his moths ate my doctor who scarf radio play. I dont really see him as giving points of view i see him as steering the com in the right direction.

    • Gordon

      May 9th, 2012 - 11:25am

You could have somebody from the new who as a mod but i doubt they would have the vast ammount of knowledge toby has. He corrects wrong facts and he seems to know about all cast members and every extra and what else they also appeared on. He also helps out if people are struggling to remember things (see barry letts on time monster).

WERE NOT DENYING MR.HADOKES KNOWLEDGE OF DOCTOR WHO,WE JUST THINK IT WOULD BE NICE TO HEAR SOMEONE ELSE ON THE COMMENTARIES. ITS JUST A BIT SMUG FROM A FANS POINT OF VIEW. HE ISNT THE BE ALL AND KNOW ALL ON THE SUBJECT.LET SOMEONE ELSE IMPART A BIT OF REFERENTIAL KNOWLEDGE,AS A CHANGE. SEE MARK AYRES-DRAGONFIRE DVD AS AN EXAMPLE.

HOW ABOUT GARETH ROBERTS OR ROB SHEARMAN AS POSSIBLE MODERATORS AS A CHANGE, FOR ANY FUTURE RELEASES AS WELL AS TOBY HADOKE, IF WE MUST HAVE THEM AT ALL.

    • Gordon

      May 10th, 2012 - 10:36am

Good choice with garath roberts but basing on his performance on the monster of peladon commentary Robert Shearmen im not keen on the idea of him. I always thought colin baker or peter davidson would be good at modderating. Lalla ward would be good (as long as she cut out the tom bashing) and Peter pervus too.I dont there is that much commentarys left to get recorded of surving unreleased stories anyway. Only zygons i believe.

ZYGONS MIGHT BE TOM BAKER AND PHILLIP HINCHLIFFE.HES NEVER DONE COMMENTARIES WITH ANY MODERATORS TO MY KNOWLEDGE. I AGREE WITH THE CHOICES OF COLIN AND THE TWO PETERS IF THEY RE-RELEASE. MAYBE THEY COULD ANSWER SOME OF THOSE QUESTIONS YOUR AVERAGE FAN DOESNT ASK AT CONVENTIONS,SOMETHING WE DONT ALREADY KNOW.

    • Anonymous

      May 10th, 2012 - 1:18pm

ITS NOT LIKELY WE,LL EVER GET TOM AND LALLA TO MAKE UP GIVEN THEIR HISTORY TOGETHER.IT WOULD BE NICE IF THEY COULD GET OVER ANY GRUDGES OR ANY RESENTMENT AND COMPROMISE IF JUST FOR THE FANS. ID LOVE TO HEAR THEM ON A COMMENTARY TOGETHER. ALAS ITLL PROBABLY NEVER HAPPEN.

    • Gordon

      May 12th, 2012 - 9:10am

Yes @doctorwhofan27. @anonomus even if they did make up i cant see them being apart of any commentarys as all their complete stories are already released and None of their stories i would say need revisiting. Out of their early releases (leasure hive, city of death)there really aint that much that could be added to those releases to make a revisit worth doing. If they were to do something together id actually rather they did something for big finish or audio go.

    • Anonymous

      May 13th, 2012 - 10:25am

ID JUST LIKE TO HEAR TOMS PERSPECTIVE ON A FEW OF THOSE STORIES,EVEN ON A DIFFERENT COMMENTARY.THEY COULD DO BIG FINISH ALTHOUGH I BET THEY,D BE RECORDED SEPARATELY,NOT ANY RECORDED TOGETHER.SHAME REALLY.

A fantastic cover for a fantastic story – I cannot wait for this release – though I’m quite sad that it means the end of the McCoy era on DVD. Such good memories of sitting in front of the video player each week taping each episode, getting the creeps at the clowns and that very sinister (yet simple) music score. 25 years ago! With the Krotons and Planet of Giants ending the 1st and 2nd Doctor ‘complete’ dvd runs it really does feel like we are reaching the end of an era.

      May 4th, 2012 - 5:19pm

yh ok, but you still have to be (admitadly not as much) skilled to make those graphic designs and render them well. I prefer the graphic covers like the planet of spiders dvd cover

    • the TARDIS

      May 4th, 2012 - 5:55pm

Nearly ALL of Lee Binding’s covers have that sort of painted style, some more than others. Just look at The Ark, The Sun Makers and Face of Evil!

    • The Monitor

      May 4th, 2012 - 8:22pm

It is interesting because had this been a Target cover, we’d been delighted. Whilst I do like computer art, one can persevere and make a fairly reasonable attempt (just look at all the alternative VHS covers there are/used to be on the net) – fans were creating equally good covers as the BBC quite often. But when it comes to paint, it either takes years to master or in many cases, never.

Pity that nearly every sensible non-caricature image of recent Doctors we see is photographic in origin.

Cool cover ! Anyone think the VHS cover looks more like your typical 2 Entertain Dr Who DVD cover ? With everything all coloured over ?

While the DVD for this episode isn’t all coloured over. I hate it when they colour it all over, like on the DVD of Mark and the Rani. Why did they set a transpartent purple all over that image ? WHY ?! ❗

A true late eighties classic, the Chief Clown is so sinister in this. Love it!

They’ve missed a trick here: this should be the last classic release!

Should be in a set with terror of the zygons as 50th anniversary DVD set

And with the newly found eps and maybe the 10th planet

No @skaro. box set for those stories would be a bad idea. Reasons:1. box sets get higher budgets but once you split the budget over 2 or 3 stories they actually get less of a budget per story. 2. If the plan is to annimate ep 4 of 10th planet it would have to be a single release to have a budget for animation.3. Some tom fans wont be pleased that zygons is paired with a mcoy story and vise versa. 4. There is nothing to connect the stories other than its the same programe

      There both popular

    • Gordon

      May 4th, 2012 - 2:18am

Both stories are popular is not enough reason to be in abox set. Plus there is no if it happens. it wont. Greatest show has a release date which rules out any chance of it getting rereleased next year. Simply put if they were planning on releasing greatest show with zygons for the 50th aniversary they wouldnt be releasing greatest show this year as they plan about 18 months to 2 years in advance

Agree with your earlier comment “Gordon” I was livid that Revenge of the Cybermen was saddled with Silver Nemesis. Yes, you get a bit more cardboard, but Revenge of the Cybermen should have been released on its own.

Special edition rereleases, Possibly season boxsets and if they sell enough more animations of lost episodes

    • McGann is the Doctor

      May 3rd, 2012 - 3:13pm

They will also be making single re-releases of stories that were released before 2[Entertain joined the team, these episodes do not have the logo on the cover.

Such as, Two Doctors, Pyramids of Mars, Claws of Axos, Ark in Space, and ofcourse Vengeance on Varos.

No. Just ones that need rereleasing ie picture quality needing improved and stories that had poor extras first time round
