Figurine Collection Magazine Special Edition #29 Gravis

The Gravis, a cockroach-like creature that is capable of controlling an entire colony, is the terrifying Special Edition figurine joining the Doctor Who Figurine Collection.

The cunning leader of the slug-like Tractators from Doctor Who, the Gravis was the only intelligent member of his species – controlling the others like insect drones. Concealed beneath the surface of the planet Frontios, the Doctor Who Tractators used their psychic control over gravity to attack and terrify the human colonists, dragging them below the surface to act as living components in their machines.

Only the Doctor’s arrival turned the tide, revealing the truth behind “the hungry earth.” Yet the Gravis was not to be underestimated. Even as one of the Doctor Who Tractators, its mental powers were sufficient to do what few have managed… destroy the TARDIS itself!

Alan. If you are concerned about subscriptions then call EM and ask them to go through the last years payments. I was in a similar situation to you not knowing where I was with payment. I also asked them to send an email outlining the payment situation. They did this and everything was Made clear.

I think the Gravis had a slightly different colour scheme, more olive green than the ‘normal’ Tractators, who were slightly more reddish brown. Yes as Philip says bit more movement too…wasn’t he the only one whose antennae moved? That obviously wouldn’t make any difference to a model!

Meant to say I particularly like how Eaglemoss have tidied up the ‘monopod’ foot on the figurine too. Looks much better.

Be interesting to see what happens if they produce the Tractator Drone. However, speaking as someone who thinks ‘Frontios’ is the best Davison serial this is rather good they’ve done the Gravis proud. They should actually do the Tractator digging machine with Captain Revere’s remains installed as a special.

I agree with the others who say this should be in the main range. Wouldn’t use up any more material than the Moffat Daleks. As collectors we bought into this range to have the figures in the same scale – that’s what my subscription to the main range + specials was for. Instead, they decide to make figures much bigger than what they should be for extra money. Aggedor should actually have been *smaller* than a normal figure but instead is about 50% bigger. It just looks ludicrous. The Kroton, the Werewolf, the two Yeti, the Dragonfire Biomechanoid, Melkur and – especially – King Hydroflax are all much bigger than they needed to be.

Strangely, they have managed to do some of the special figures at the correct scale such as the Dalek Emperor from Evil and the Mechanoid so it seems completely random which way they scale these things. I would love a Tractator as part of the main range but as an oversized out-of-scale special for a high cost I’m less enthused.

One other bizarre thing was that, although they unexpectedly put the Zarbi in the main range, it too was out of scale and much too big. Look at where the leg section comes up to compared with the other – ‘human’ – figures around it. It should have legs the same size and height as the other figures but appears instead to have been played by an actor about eight feet tall based on the leg size.

And there’s no consistency at all even between the humanoid figures. Try putting the Curator figure beside Ryan, for instance. If the height for the Curator is correct then Tosin Cole must be about five foot four instead of a tall young man. And if the height for Ryan is correct then Tom Baker must be over seven foot tall. They don’t seem to operate to any standards at all for the scale.

It could be that the antennae may be too delicate to produce at a smaller scale on this piece – I’m worried enough about them arrving intact already.

Why oh why as a special. Standard would have sufficed. Hope they scale it all the way down otherwise its going to stand out like a sore thumb. They managed it with the biomechanoid dragon. Its a good monster dont get me wrong but there are more larger originals id prefer as special. Will we ever get the cleaner or gods of ragnarok?

That’s another figure that could have been in the standard collection. (Can anyone remember the Zarbi that they put in the normal collection). They’ll end up making Gravis bigger than he actually his to give you perceived value as a special, but then of course he be out of scale like Aggedor and some other figures. (I dislike stuff out of scale).

Hello Tim, Tractor his basically an average sized man in a costume, so he shouldn’t be any taller than a standard figure, just more bulky.
Harrops had the right idea and made him the same size as the rest of their figurines. (Not try and pass him off as a Special)

    • booboo

      October 14th, 2021 - 11:24am

Not sure how big their going to make him Tim, can’t see him being normal size though and their charging Special Edition price. He might well be in scale with the CO figures. If so I’m sure people will buy him for their CO colections. Lol.

I gave aggedor to a charity shop. It was one of my least favourites from the whole collecton. Well that and that unlookalike greg davies king hydroflax. They didnt get the look quite right but it was the scale that ruined it. I,m going to attempt my own at some later date using the harrops version to work feom.

    • Doug Who

      October 14th, 2021 - 12:08pm

      Hi Ergon,

That was drastic! Like you I’m not too fond of the Aggedor figure. Bears little resemblance to how it was on screen. I modified mine! I filed down the claws and added some bulk and his ‘hump’ on his back. Not perfect but looks better on the shelf. There was a ‘mini terror’ figurine that looks much more like the TV Aggedor – about the right scale for Eaglemoss too!

Yes the scale on the Hydroflax figurine’s head was another slight bugbear! Don’t know why it couldn’t have been the same size as a ‘normal’ figurine’s head then it would have been perfect.

However, there’s only a very few characters where the proportions are out (Scaroth’s legs are a bit too long for example) and where else would we get Nimons or Primords?

    • the ergon

      October 14th, 2021 - 1:11pm

There are so many figurines in this collection i love doug. The veil (Which i hope they can get The Gravis to about the same size),teller, Cloister Wraith, Nimon as you mention and more. sometimes its probably easier to modify if your not satisfied with the occasional character. I did omegas mask a darker gold and Bok i was fortunate to have 2 which i altered the weathering to the right shade of Grey. I,m going to make my own and a properly scaled Wirrn when i get round to it. Aggedor and hydroflax irked me so much and didn,t seem to fit in well with my collection also occasionally i like to do my bit. Its sometimes like a spring clean and when things get repackaged it gives me an excuse to get rid of the older stuff and create some space. I wouldn,t get that much so so why not give to a worthwhile cause. Doctor Who merchandise always sells and those charity shop ‘Managers’ know this..
