Figurine Collection Magazine Companion Set #12

This companion box-set in our fantastic Doctor Who Figurines Collection unites the Third Doctor with the members of the UNIT – Jo Grant, Brigadier and Benton.

In his third incarnation, the Doctor (played by Jon Pertwee) was exiled to 20th-century Earth by his fellow Time Lords. Dashing and distinguished, this Doctor was a master of Venusian aikido with a fondness for fast cars, and joined the Unified Intelligence Taskforce – or UNIT – as a scientific advisor, to better defend Earth from an alien invasion.

The Third Doctor was joined by his outspoken and enthusiastic lab assistant Jo Grant, as well as the aggressive Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart – or simply “The Brigadier”, and the reliable, unshakeable Sergeant Benton.
The Doctor and the Brigadier often clashed over the latter’s preference for military force over peaceful solutions, but eventually developed genuine and mutual respect.

Just got a DPD email for a dispatch: I wonder if it’s the Timelords # 4 Set?

  • Basil Funkenstein

    October 27th, 2020 - 11:44pm

I adore this set. They have 2 (potentially 3 if they decide to do a War Doctor companion set) Doctor and Companion sets left to do. The Fifth Doctor and Sixth Doctor.

I’m hoping the four figurine box sets are successful so we can have a season 19 5 with his hat on, Tegan in her flight attendant outfit, Nyssa, and Adric. Then possibly a season 23 6, Peri, Mel, and Glitz.

      October 28th, 2020 - 7:32pm

I like your idea Basil of bundling Glitz in with a Sixth Doctor 4-pack – I definitely would love to see them release a figurine of him, either like that or as a main fortnightly issue. I do think there’s a good chance we’ll get more than one Companion set for certain Doctors – I can see, for instance, them doing an early Fourth Doctor (short rust-red jacket and diamond cardigan) with Harry, and maybe a white cravat/dark green waistcoat S15 version as seen in Invasion of Time, to pair with a Leela. Some time back, EM said they ‘had plans’ for Castrovalva (when they moved Ainley’s Master’s magazine to feature Time Flight instead of Castrovalva) so I wonder if a 4-pack of the Season 19 team might come out based around that story? The Davison variant could be pre-celery and/or with hat.

    • The Werewolf

      October 28th, 2020 - 9:58pm

Glitz as a figurine would be pretty much a dream and I dont expect it to happen. He was such a fun character though.

      October 28th, 2020 - 10:25pm

Only 3 left? Surely there’ll be more there’s tons of companions we haven’t got yet

    • Basil Funkenstein

      October 29th, 2020 - 3:39pm

Doctor Stu, I meant of the original first run of Doctors and companions, I don’t think I worded it well but that was my meaning. I was going to add “before they do a second or third run of variant companion sets” but it was late, I was tired, and I completely forgot. I hope they end up managing to release every variant possible of Doctors and companions whether that’s in box sets, companion sets, or the main run.

    • JL

      October 29th, 2020 - 9:06pm

In future waves, I’d quite like to see (if they have to be story specific):
1, Vicki and Steven from The Time Meddler
1, Dodo, Ben and Polly from The War Machines (though Ben and Polly spent more time with 2, we already have quite a lot of 2nd doctor figurines)
2 (in hat and life jacket) and Victoria from Fury from the Deep
2 (ripped jacket and knee) and Zoe from the War Games
3, Liz and Yates from the Five Doctors (though I’d love to see 3 and Liz from Spearhead and Yates from a 3rd doctor story as well)
4 and Harry from various Season 12 stories
4 and Leela is a tricky one as I’d rather have Leela in her original costume but Tom from Invasion of Time, in which Leela wears her second variant of costume :/
*I imagine our first 5th doctor set will be the season 19 crew and a 6th doctor set may have both peri and mel if they count trial of a time lord as one story*
9 and Rose from Father’s Day (I’d rather have a Rose figurine from when she was a main companion than series 4)
10 and Martha from the Lazarus Experiment
10, Donna and Wilf from Journey’s End (they could do a meta crisis doctor, who wore the blue suit variant, so we don’t get a repeat of the brown suit)
11 (green coat) and Rory from The Girl Who Waited
12 and Clara from Face the Raven
12 and Nardole from The Doctor Falls

    • Basil Funkenstein

      October 30th, 2020 - 4:12am

I think if they do decide to do a second wave of companion sets I’d like them to take the route of non-story specific box sets. That would open up a lot of ideas and freedom for them and help their approach to that part of the collection become more malleable. I still like your idea though if they ‘have’ to stick with story/episode specific box sets or decide that’s the best option. I am a stickler for variants and absolutely love them. I love the variety of sculpts, poses and outfit changes, however I understand that not everyone enjoys variants and finds them a bit ‘same-y’ and that’s cool too.

    • Basil Funkenstein

      October 30th, 2020 - 4:58am

I’d love to see: (asterisk by the ones I’m really hoping for. The rest I’d love to see but wouldn’t be crushed if they didn’t manage to do.)

1st Doctor in his normal clothes, cloak, Astrakhan hat, and striped scarf. Possibly wearing his glasses or monocle or holding a lit candle in its’ holder. *(Not all of these are going to be companion set ideas, some are just one issue variants.)
1st Doctor in his normal clothes but without coat/jacket. (As seen at the end of “Unearthly Child.”)
1st Doctor in ‘Goodbye Susan’ speech pose, Susan, Ian, and Barbara. *( From season 2 “Dalek Invasion of Earth.” Gives us a chance to see Ian and Barbara in their normal clothes from the show.)
Vicki and Steven. *(From season 2, any iconic outfit really.)
First Doctor as Abbot of Amboise. (From “The Massacre.”)
Vicki, Steven, and Katarina. *(From season 3.)
Sara Kingdom and Brett Vyon. *(From “Daleks’ Masterplan.”)
Dodo, Ben, and Polly. *(From season 3.)
2nd Doctor in his early season 4 clothes without hat, maybe with 200 year diary in his hands or holding a prop from an early season 4 story, Ben, and Polly. *(From season 4.)
Jamie and Victoria. *(From “Evil of the Daleks.”)
2nd Doctor in “Fury” beanie outfit with sonic screwdriver whistle, Victoria, and Zoe. *(From season 5.)
2nd Doctor as Salamander. *(From “Enemy of the World.”)
Jamie in kaftan vest and Zoe. *(From season 6.)
Dr Liz Shaw, the Brig, and Benton. *(From season 7.)
3rd Doctor, Jo, and Yates. *(From season 8.)
1st, 2nd, and 3rd Doctor, and Jo. *(From “The Three Doctors.”)
3rd Doctor in blue crushed velvet suit holding Metebelis 3 crystal and Sarah Jane. *(From “Planet of the Spiders.”)
4th Doctor grinning, in red corduroy jacket, argyle cardigan, without hat, and either holding sonic screwdriver and/or bag of jelly babies, Sarah Jane, and Harry. *(A mix of season 12 outfits. I’d love to see that version of 4 with Harry in his normal outfit and Sarah Jane in her denim “Genesis of the Daleks” outfit.)
“Hand of Fear” Sarah Jane with or without Eldrad’s hand, and Leela in dark brown/tan Sevateem outfit with crossbow. *(From season 14.)
4th Doctor in Time Lord robes. (From “Deadly Assassin.”)
4th Doctor and Leela. *(“Talons of Weng-Chiang” Victorian Sherlock Holmes outfits.)
4th Doctor with green vest and cravat look, and Leela in cream/beige outfit with knife. *(From season 15.)
      4th Doctor. (From season 16.)
4th Doctor. (From season 17, maybe “City of Death” outfit.)
Romana 2, Adric, Nyssa, and Tegan. *(From season 18.)

I’m a massive Yates fan and I cant help but feel hes been shafted by this. Like, it’s kinda a middle figure to Franklin including 4 of the 5 main cast. I know some people will say ‘yeah but he didnt appear as much’ but let’s be honest he still deserved a place in this, in the stories with him and Benton he features a lot more, case in point Planet of the Spiders. I dunno, I just feel it’s a bit harsh not to include him.

If you subscribed from 180 you only pay 6.99 per figure from the main collection but if you order from EM website there 9.99 per figure from the main collection

I think in this case they have got the faces of the doctor, the brigadier and Sgt benson just right, but not so much Jo.

Lots of comments about the faces and features on the Eaglemoss figures. I don’t think they are bad when you consider the price point. One thing I have noticed is they look better in hand than in images which are often zoomed due to size. No complaints here.

Not just the price point Commander,
But a very small scale, considering both of these points they do an admiral job.

I think when some people complain that the likenes’s are no good or paint apps are sloppily applied, I do think you do have to take into account the small scale of these and especially the £10 price point per figure and magazine.
You’re never going to get the Mona Lisa.
(Although with some comments I believe that’s what some people expect)

Not to mention you’ll never notice the faces when you look at them all on the shelves anyway. I don’t, and some of them are just aive my bed.

Really unfortunate we couldn’t get Mike Yates as well. It would have been the most logical place to put him and now I’m afraid we won’t get him at all.
