I know The Time Warrior was their first appearance but I thought it was the first time the Doctor met them, too. Am I wrong?

The Doctor already knows of the Sontarans by the time of The Time Warrior, the Second Doctor also knows of them in The Two Doctors. I always presumed this was by reputation alone before that story, obviously this story retcons that.

In that story, the doctor says that he has met the sontarans before

I see! I’d forgotten about the two doctors.

I like that they did the sontarans in reference to the daleks and if the sontarans appeared in 1965 this would be the title of the episode
