Can I just say the upscale on this is absolutely awful
Some shots are really blurry and some are really sharp, it just looks awful. I do see a lot more detail on Capaldi’s face but that’s it
But the cgi looks worse and I thought this episode looked amazing on blu ray. Also the detail looked so fake with the rocks normally you see a lot more detail on the rocks but there’s the isslusion of it and not much else. And bill’s hair was this interlace effect on it which is very distracting. And clara green screen don’t get me started on that.

wait, did you buy a 4K TV also

Mainly it’s just problems with the upscale, very carefree compared to the Season 12 boxsets, as that that is the best upscale of SD video I have ever seen, this looks so much worse, mainly with bill’s hair

Those deleted scenes of them both were awful. I still to this day however will never understand why they didn’t connect twice upon a time to the tenth planet. Considering the twelfth doctor had just finished fighting the mondasian cybermen. Such a wasted opportunity

The actress for polly was alright, but the actor for Ben was terrible, the guy looked like he didn’t even want to be there.

What’s worse is Moffat making the first doctor sexist. He was skating on very series 10 episode 3. He made an episode, which should have been fun and light hearted as it was Christmas despite Capaldi leaving, a cringy and painful farewell to 1 and 12.

    • Anonymous

      September 3rd, 2018 - 4:34pm

And of course the episode had no value, no stake and no nothing. The doctor wanting to not regenerate is such a good idea and should be front and centre not the d plot

Just preordered it for 13.49 from zoom. Haven’t got a 4K player or tv yet but will do in the next few years so it will save me upgrading. It comes with a blu ray copy so I’m not missing out. The blu ray is currently 12-13 quid so it’s worth just paying the extra quid for it especially if it stops me double dipping later on

      I would recommend heavily getting a 4K tv and a 4K player
Even though I bought a 4K player before the tv
Blu ray’s look great on a 4K tv and UHD’s even better
DVD’s are watchable but don’t expect amazing.
I did buy a few 4k movies, the ones I liked and each one shot on different formats.
But yes, do buy a 4K tv very soon as they are coming down in price

Funnily enough, if you can find one reasonably priced, an Xbox One S is a very good UHD Blu-ray player. You also get the added bonus of a console, too!

I watched the last Jedi on our 4K TV and it looked sensational. I wasn’t expecting much at all but its definetly worth it

    • Leon Kerr

      September 2nd, 2018 - 11:24pm

You need a decent sized TV too. 4K on a 32 incher doesn’t do it justice.

  • J45ON96

    September 2nd, 2018 - 12:10am

I’m fairly mixed about this. Even though it’s a 4K Blu-ray, it’s stated in the description that it’s an upscale, more than likely from the 2K/1080p master. I would also assume the effects are rendered the same, at 2K. Unless they state that this release also has HDR, which would make a difference in the dynamic colour range of the picture, even at a 1080p upscale

Even as someone that loves and collects 4K movies, this feels a bit pointless of a release, if I’m honest.

I’m all for pushing new formats, I can’t wait for Season 19’s Blu-ray, for example, but I feel like they need a proper reason for it. Converting 16mm inserts to HD, video to 50/60fps, and having uncompressed multi-channel audio is a good reason for me in the case of Season 19, but in the case of this release, there’s no real reason to pick it up without them confirming HDR. Without it, this release would essentially be doing what most 4K Blu-ray players/TVs do anyway by upscaling, and so you’re essentially getting the standard Blu-ray release at a premium.

I’d guess, therefore, that this is to test the waters for future 4K releases, but that’s a bit odd to me. Surely, if they’re upscaling, a more prominent story like the DWM Survey-topping Day Of The Doctor would be more suitable? I just don’t know what to think with this one at all.

The U.S. release does have HDR 10. Many UHDs have been upscaled too.

    • J45ON96

      September 2nd, 2018 - 10:33am

Well, I suppose the HDR is something, then. I know why they’ve upscaled in this case, as Doctor Who was shot between 2009 and 2017 in 2K. No idea what the new cameras are for S11, if they are 4K or above, that definitely makes me think they’re testing the waters, but the choice of release seems unusual as a test.

Yeah, I know a lot of UHDs are upscales, and it annoys me, especially in cases where the master exists in a film format or higher than 2k, and yet they don’t take advantage of the format and just upscale. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is an awful example of this. It was shot in 8K, but they used an upscale of the 2K master for the 4K release. Just doesn’t take advantage of the format whatsoever, and feels like you’re being sold an inferior product over what could’ve been released. In some cases, such as this, there’s no other option, which is why they usually add HDR.

      September 3rd, 2018 - 7:19am

Series 11’s Upgrade is just being 21:9 Cinematic Widescreen rather than 16:9 TV Widescreen. Most US Commercials are filmed in 21:9 too. The series is still in 1080p/1080i. I’m now considering getting the release if it has HDR. BUT, I want confirmation, the Blu-ray item you tagged had no source of where they got the info it has HDR10.

This would only be worth it to see ‘the doctor of war’ and the battlefield scenes at sunset. But £20 for it? The episode in itself is not very good, the plot is fine for a Christmas special but the awful Moffatt dialogue and terrible acting lets it down immensely so can’t see the point really in buying. Now the singing towers of Darrilium for example is something I’d like to see in 4K

Thats the beauty of 4K and the prices will keep coming down in time. Had mine nearly a year and got a few discs. the upscale as it stands is superb and almost puts Blu-ray to bed. I,m just wondering though because now they are repackaging films in old retro VHS cases with added bluray and accessories. I wonder if they exhaust options whether they,d return this way to old WHO as a novelty to fans who never grew up on VHS tapes.

2nd worst? It wasn’t the greatest but not that bad surely… It’s better than all of McCoy’s era, better than all of season 10, better than Smith’s final episode (albeit that’s primarily the directors fault along with the daft idea of holonudity and church mixed with the poorest outing of the weeping angels. )

    • The Outcast

Hey, McCoy’s era is great barring Season 24. And Series 10 was miles better than Series 9 and Series 2.

    • Gordon

      July 12th, 2018 - 11:57pm

The McCoy era starts off bad but gets way better in some of 25 and the whole of 26. I’d go so far as to say s26 was one of the best of the 80s. No dud in my opinion. Such a shame the show was pretty much on life support behind the scenes in the last couple of years that it was lucky there was even a show for those last 4 years.

    • THE ERGON

      July 13th, 2018 - 2:05pm

As far as season 26 is concerned there wasn,t really a dud although Battlefield is for me the weakest link.Even Ben Aaronovich resigned himself that what he wrote never became fully realised on screen. As brigadier Bambera herself says ‘oh, shame’.

There are some episodes from the McCoy, I would put over TUAT, delta and the banner men, dragon fire, remembrance of the daleks, sliver nemesis, greatest show on the galaxy and the curse of fendrick. Btw I have not watched every single episode of the Moffat era.

Whilst I would love Doctor Who to watch on 4K, I can’t see the Beeb dropping the extra cash to master any episodes in 4K… And I Know they won’t be rendering Any of the CGI in anything but 2k so this is a bit confusing LOL. I can see a slight increase in improvement of Colour and Audio but unless I’m terribly mistaken this is basically a Blu-ray straight Transfer… If you’re wanting to drop an extra couple of bucks for a cool black plastic case then heck yeah!!!
