There’s a brand new face at the controls of the TARDIS as Peter Capaldi becomes the Twelfth Doctor steering the blue box. In a feature-length opener we see the Doctor crash land in Victorian London.

As Clara struggles to recognise the man she thought she knew so well, killers are stalking the capital. A slaughterhouse restaurant and a buried space ship lead the Doctor into a confrontation with a long forgotten foe … but how far will this new man go to protect his friends? The Doctor and Clara encounter wonders and horrors. They meet a fleet of Daleks while attempting to rescue a stranded ship of human survivors, face ranks of Cybermen stalking the Earth, and go back in time to join Robin Hood in a fight with killer robots. As Clara falls for handsome fellow teacher Danny, can she keep her two extraordinary lives going?

Got mine today from Amazon. Delivered by Royal Mail so first time I’ve had something before release day as I’m not a Prime Member.

Looks lovely on my shelf. Hopefully they will announce the new Series 9 Steelbook soon.

They will. The old ones were limited editions in their own right.

Series 9 and 10 will both be different and 10 will include TUAT too.

Hope they do 11 and 12 at cheaper price point too as not bought them yet.

Think I’m going to cancel my pre-order, it’s been a fortnight and the artwork hasn’t grown on me and I’d rather spend my money on the new Collection rereleases. I have the original Series 9 & 10 steelbooks so this was the last one I was getting anyway but without new content or a striking design I’ve just gone off it.

I’m sure she was also an artist who made it clear she wouldn’t change designs back around series 5 steelbook on Twitter – don’t know why I have that in my head. Series 3 is far superior to this. Why are people happy with a substandard design. Dreading series 9 as it’s my fave series and it’s all ready had an A+ design

    • Coleman

      March 25th, 2021 - 11:42am

My advice would be don’t cancel.
If you have all the steelbooks apart from this, i guarantee you’ll eventually regret not having it to complete your collection.
Youll get the urge to buy it eventually When it’s sold out.
Then you’ll be paying £200 for it on the secondary market.
TRUST ME, get it while it’s cheap.

@Coleman alright you got there me haha, I’ll keep my order.

Glad you’ve changed your mind Star Lord.
Didn’t want you to make a mistake like I’ve done I the past. Started collecting the Dr Who steelbooks late, would have loved a full set but noway am I paying the prices there asking on Ebay for series one, two and nine that’s missing from my collection.
Always order them straight away now. Won’t be making that mistake again.

    • Coleman

I’d agree with that Bobby. Series Two and Nine aswell since the prices are extortionate on the after market.

I honestly think I prefer the series 3 design to this. Series 3 doesn’t have that super cheap effect when you look at it. This just seems a bit tacky in my opinion. It’s a shame because her designs for 4,5,6 are quite nice. Somthing tells me she has no love for the Capaldi era. Very little thought. I’m a graphic designer as well and usually the steelbooks are all beutifull . It’s a real shame. Almost as though series 8 was Googled and the first few images she took and painted

So I asked the BBC if this would have the uncut Robot of Sherwood or not. Unfortunately they have confirmed it is the same as the previous set.
However, they did respond positively to the suggestion it “could” be included as an extra in a future set.

I can’t see them bothering creating new extras for a potential collection range of new series. Judging by these steelbooks they are happy to re-release the new series with extras exactly as before.

No reason why they wouldn’t. Give it a couple of years until they’ve sold all the steelbook series. We’re already over 15 years from series 1, so plenty of scope for retrospectives and behind the sofas. And there’s a bunch of existing material that isn’t on the current releases, from chat shows, blue peter, etc. Both of these can be done relatively cheaply.

Plus the majority of the cast and crew are still with us, so it’s a lot easier to get hold of relevant people for docs.

    • Richard

      March 16th, 2021 - 4:19pm

You’re right Rory. It would be excellent to be able to see the full length Confidentials again and I believe there was a documentary that aired just before Rose.

    • D84

      March 17th, 2021 - 11:26am

It is my sincere hope that NuWho will be repackaged into “The Collection” range. With over 15 years since Rose aired I’m sure there is scope for new extras such as behind th sofa etc plus DW Confidential and all the other bits and bobs that can be assembled

      March 17th, 2021 - 12:00pm

The people overseeing the steelbook range is different to those overseeing the collection range. Just because team a is willing to just put out the same thing again doesn’t mean team b is willing to do the same if they get the opportunity to release the same product

    • daz

      March 17th, 2021 - 11:11pm

The actual Steelbook is what this collection is about. Hence the same disc content. Although we were lucky with DT extra interview and SJA on The Specials release.

I would have loved an new reflective interview with MS and even his SJA episodes too as a bonus disc on one of his sets but it never happened.

Twice Upon A Time will no doubt be included on Series 10 when we get it next year. Be great if they could interview PC too but probably won’t happen either.

I just realized the problem for me is not being in the UK. I could finally see it available after connecting with a UK-based VPN, but still it won’t let me send it to the EU. I have bought all the steelbooks from Amazon UK and got them delivered to the EU, so I am really disappointed by this sudden restriction…it’s actually adding insult to injury as it says the item is sold by “Amazon EU”.

Do you know of any store who delivers to the EU? I guess buying it from a reseller on e-bay will do the trick, even though it’s more expensive. Any other option?

    • Coleman

      March 14th, 2021 - 10:44am

Stefano, Ebay might be your best option, theirs always someone who is willing to ship to the EU.
My advice would be to do it straight away though. Once these sell out in shops the prices shoot up rapidly on the secondary market.

    • Stefano

      March 14th, 2021 - 2:56pm

Thanks Coleman, I did just that.

Do we know what caused Amazon to stop shipping the steelbooks (I assume it probably happened for many other items) outside the UK?

    • Rob W

      March 15th, 2021 - 9:50am

Any products shipping from the UK to addresses in the EU, tax and duties would need to be settled on your behalf by the seller or yourself. I’d check with the ebay seller so there’s no surprises.

    • Coleman

      March 15th, 2021 - 11:01am

I think all the problems arose from the UK leaving the EU (Brexit), but it should only be for awhile, it will probably take time to be soughted out though Stefano.

    • Stefano

      March 15th, 2021 - 3:03pm

@Coleman, I suspected Brexit played a part. Sad state of affairs the world is in from many points of view.

@Rob W, thanks for the heads up! I am in fact still waiting for the 50th anniversary steelbook which I had bought from Zoom. I think it was sent on Feb 4th, and 2 weeks ago I got a message from my local mail company asking for toll fees to be paid. I paid right away and still waiting. I guess they’re shooting for 2 months delivery time. Just crazy. In this case though, the eBay seller already charged me for it and ensured the item will be dispatched already having cleared customs, so it can be delivered directly. Hopefully that will work…

    • Flo

      March 18th, 2021 - 5:16am

@stefano I’m in France an I bought every DW steelbook and Collections on Amazon UK. Since the Brexit it is impossible and I have to go via Zavvy or Zoom or even EBay.
Ebay can be very expensive and I even find out that taxes are sometimes HIGHER for UK products than US ones which is absurd !
      Good luck

Series 5 was condensed down from six discs to four, and had the ‘next time’ trailers reinstated which was lovely, but they do seem to have gotten lazier of late. Series 6 literally had same discs from the original release and Series 7 also, except with S7 they slapped on the new age symbols and then didn’t bother changing the disc art, real pity.

    • Mikey C

      March 11th, 2021 - 6:48pm

Unlikely. A shame as there ARE extras they could include, notably the deleted scenes for S8 which were included in the US only “Peter Capaldi collection”

    • Shane McEntee

      March 14th, 2021 - 10:01pm

@Star Lord. If the condensed it down to less discs on S5, I assume the bitrate was reduced so it’s actually a worse set than the original. I didn’t know the next time trailers were not in the regular set. The only steelbooks I have are The Specials and the 50th Anniversary set. Just hoping I’m not missing out on anything.

    • Haza14

      March 15th, 2021 - 11:04pm

That’s interesting Star Lord, didn’t realise the Series 5 release was changed slightly. I do think they missed a trick on these in not including extra content. They are in the main just exact repackages of the original Blu-ray sets. Some have said that even previous mistakes (e.g 2005 Children In Need episode included was still the wrong version) have been replicated. I do love how these sets look on the self though so they are worth it for me as I didn’t previously own any of the series on Blu-ray before Series 10. Just hoping that someday they’ll be included in the collection range and that’s when we’ll get all the extra things that could have been included!! They seem to be wanting to keep very quiet on that topic at the moment though, understandable given these steelbooks still have a few to go!!

    • Ian R

      March 16th, 2021 - 1:45pm

The steelbook editions of Series 5 and the Tennant specials were based on discs originally created for the US market, as they were generally superior to the UK discs, albeit slightly slowed-down; the specials were a better standards conversion than the 2010 release, with additional bonus material, and Series 5 retained the next time trailers as discussed. I suspect the reduced disc count did not compromise the picture quality, as the original discs probably had a lot of unused space (with disc contents allocated based on the capacity of the DVD box set). From Series 6 onwards, the technical quality of the original Blu-ray releases improved (notwithstanding the infamous S6 fault which was later fixed) so the steelbooks are just reissues. I agree that some more bonus discs would be nice…

Sophie has done 5 out of the last 7 steelbooks and they are getting progressively less interesting. Im buying this more just because I am in for the range than because I like the art. Wish they would bring Claudia back and give her another shot at a steelbook, her series 3 Steelbook is fantastic and so underrated.

Loving the colours on this 8th season steelbook and for me the last to collect regardless if continued with reissued redesigned seasons 9-12 as I already have these in the previous Amazon exclusive versions that I like very much and have no intention buying again with different covers regardless if they do or do not contain Twice Upon a Time or Revolution of the Daleks as I already have this separately on Blu ray.
But if they do continue to release seasons 9-12 on steelbook beyond this release it will be good for those that missed out on the original Amazon exclusives first time round and complete the collection.

I don’t like being negative, but I’m not sure this really captures the feel of the series. The purple doesn’t work, Kate and Osgood don’t really deserve to be on there seeing as they were in half an episode really and I’d have preferred Clara and the Master to have switched places. It is still nice to see it come out though at last.

The Artist probably tried it in black first to be like 12th’s Blackboard. Purple is Missy’s colour though so still works.

Clara should be on thr front though as her first full series. Guessing she will be on Series 9.

    • JL

      March 10th, 2021 - 8:37pm

I see what you mean, Series 8 promotional material often seemed to feature golds and browns and oranges, Series 9 I associate with the yellow ocre, red velvet and blue of the Series 9 part 1 and 2 dvd/blu-ray covers, the purple reminds me more of the series 10 promotional material… But I like this design nonetheless, I like how the front cover is like a homage to the series 12 steelbook that featured the Doctor and the Master on the front cover, the back maybe should have either been limited to a design around the finale, or gone the extreme opposite and feature a wider range of monsters and villains from the series and perhaps Clara from Flatline when she sort of became the Doctor. Nevertheless I’m sure it will look incredible in hand as they always do!

I think Daz means if/when they do a series 9 steelbook as part of this range (which i think guite a lot of us are hoping they do). I like having Clara on the back myself 🙂 she and 12 had a very toxic relationship and it’s kinda cool to show her as seperate and independant to him imo 🙂

      Hi Sam.

Yes. When they do the new Series 9 steelbook later this year as part of this range I would like Clara to be on the front with the Doctor.

I would also like Bill and Nardole on the front of Series 10 with Capaldi’s massive hair and for it to include Twice Upon A Time.

I also hope they eventually re-do Series 11 onwards at the cheaper price and with different artwork, although I do like the Series 12 one.

I display my steelbooks and collection sets with front covers on view. It’s like one giant piece of artwork or it will be once I have all of them.

    • Mikey C

      March 11th, 2021 - 6:43pm

Yes, it feel slightly odd for Clara to be on the back again, as if Missy was the co-star of the series! Amy by contrast was with 11 on the front of all the steelbooks she was in

The choice of characters and monsters on the back is debatable too, the Dalek is unoriginal, the half faced droid or Boneless would have been more original and specific to this series

  • René Campbell

Sadly I doubt they will as they barely put anything on these new series steelbooks or anything new or uncut. It was nice to see the 10th Dr animations added but not even the online commentaries made it on there sadly. It’s why I personally don’t bother collecting them. Artwork is useally lovely but it’s quite sad to see how much love and stuff that gets put on the Blu-ray classic collections compared to these. Really hope they get to do the new series in the collection boxsets someday and give them some love. But I dont begrudge anyone collecting them, there a nice way to collect the new series.

It is nice but… why does Sophie cowdrey always use those photoshop images that are over used . I always dread it now, the art is great but the images could be more inventive. Lee binding barely used images that are over used or, edited them quite a bit. I don’t know… seems a tad lazy

The only image on the whole thing that I would dub overused is the pic of Rusty

I feel like they could be rushing these as the know there will be demand in the new series collection sets and possibly if they start in a tear or two then they could really pad it out to give time to bW 60s seasons and get more audience possibly buying more sets

Exactly. They don’t have the quality of 1/2/specials/6/50th. Too rushed, no thought about imagery at all, or colours

Amazon take money nearer release date, so you can order now but money won’t be taken for a few weeks yet.
I’ve ordered straight away, but i known ive time to save some pennies up.

      Hello Prowl1701.
Watched your YouTube video yesterday on upcoming Dr Who collection covers.
Never would have guessed you are American.
Just thought you were a UK fan.

Thanks for watching the video Coleman! Yeah I live in the states, but I’m a lifelong whovian. Watched old reruns on our PBS (Public broadcasting station) when I was really little. My first doctor was either Tom or Jon.

Any one? It’s just that my birthday is the 20th and I don’t want a repeat of season 26 will definitely be out before Christmas type situation

Most things have been on time of late but realistically no one can guarantee anything in the current climate.

The last two weren’t delayed, and those were released during the pandemic, so you should be safe unless there’s a major issue with them. Obviously there’s no guarantees, but going on past performance the release dates are more reliable than the Collection sets.

No, they don’t tend to since they’ve not got anything new on disc. It’s only manufacturing the box itself that could be a potential delay.

Here comes the last (technically) steel book. Just pre-ordered to complete my collection. The Alice X Zhang cover for season 9 is still one of my favourites. Maybe a good question, which one is your favourite?

I don’t think it will be the last. I’m pretty sure they’ll release all of them.

    • Rory

      March 10th, 2021 - 4:48pm

Agreed with Dunc. The S9-12 steelbooks were Amazon exclusives, so every chance there will be new releases of those with different art (and hopefully Twice Upon a time and Revolution of the Daleks with their respective seasons).

I doubt it’ll be the last. A S10 steelbook reissue will most likely include Twice Upon A Time, which isn’t on the original.

      Season 1,2,9&10
The covers actually looked like genuine artwork rather than 50 photoshopped images squished into one place like season 4 and 5. Season 3 was just trash! Martha Jones deserved so much more than that crappy artwork. The back was a complete mess. The front of season 4 was cool but the back was way too crammed and the art itself wasn’t the best. Season 11 ruined the collection by cramming the words doctor who onto the front cover and the 50th is also too crammed. I think my all in all faves are season 1 and 10. Proper art without too much photoshopping. Also the images aren’t super generic they are made by the actual artist. The season 2 back cover looked AMAZING.

Despite all of this I still love my steel book collection. Just wish they used just one artist and also wish they didn’t keep Changing the fonts on the spine. Could’ve also done with more bonus material like the classic collections

Season 1 was an Amazon exclusive too, so not sure that’s a relevant point.

Hey Guys, I did say technically!!!

I own all the Season steel books. But did miss out on Power of the Daleks and Shada as well as Spearhead from space. (Even had to get my Blu-ray of Power from Australia). I do love the Amazon exclusive Steel books though, the artwork is just amazing.

      Hello Andy,
I knew what you meant about the steelbooks being made in chronological order from one to eight so far. With 9, 10, 11 and 12 already made in steelbook form so that’s it.
I’d probably say the more Simplified series 1 or 2 being my favourite covers. (Can’t really choose between them).
