The second edition of Doctor Who – The Collection: Season 12 will be released on 2nd March 2020.
Season 12 was first released as a limited edition on Blu-ray in February 2018, and is being re-released by BBC Studios to bring the total number of copies in line with other seasons in the classic collection.

Season 12 features five stories over 20 episodes, including The Ark in Space and Genesis of the Daleks. The Doctor is accompanied by Sarah Jane Smith (Elizabeth Sladen) and Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter) and was first broadcast on the BBC between December 1974 and May 1975.
BBC Studios have confirmed replacement discs will be included with this release.

BBC Worldwide has announced that Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 12 will be released on Blu-Ray on 2nd July 2018.
For fans of Doctor Who and collectors of Classic Who seasons, the Blu-Ray has limited edition packaging with artwork by Lee Binding and has been restored and up-scaled to HD by Peter Crocker and Mark Ayres. The new release also has a wealth of new bonus content.
Russell Minton, Executive Producer at BBC Worldwide says : “We are doing our very best at BBC Worldwide to restore and bring as many Classic Who titles out on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, and this starts with being able to confirm one of my favourites, Tom Baker’s first season. We will also endeavour to include additional archive material and exciting newly-shot features where possible.”
Season 12, Tom Baker’s first as the Doctor, features five stories over 20 episodes, including The Ark in Space and Genesis of the Daleks. The Doctor is accompanied in this season by Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) and Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter) and was first broadcast between December 1974 and May 1975.

Kind of a Late Birthday present and glad that BBC Worldwide are releasing Full Season Boxsets… good thing i only got Germany’s 7th Doctor Boxset, otherwise I might have missed this… here’s to hoping all of the Classic Run (Including Animated Reconstructions of Missing Episodes – Possibly Starting with Seasons 01 & 02)

June 6th, 2018 - 11:18amI’m not sure how they would release complete seasons of Hartnell’s and Troughton’s era’s for obvious reasons. Plus I’m not convinced many of the Pertwee seasons could be sufficiently upscaled due to the mixture of colour sources. Maybe Season 10 could be released with no major problems. Plus if they properly recolourised in full ‘Invasion’ (part 1 of ‘Invasion of the Dinosaurs’), then Season 11 could also be released on Blu-ray. Anything before Season 9 could be problematic.

June 7th, 2018 - 1:35amThey really need to take advantage of David Bradley, I want lost Hartnell episodes as much as the next guy but they need to just refilm all the missing Hartnell episodes and use them until the odd episode is discovered if ever… Troughton’s episode’s should be re shot as well, only they should wait until they find an excellent look alike or cast Harry (Patrick’s Grandson) when he gets older…just to keep it in the lineage:)

June 7th, 2018 - 7:33amI just can’t see them doing that. It’s never going to replace the episodes no matter how hard they tried. Marco Polo for example has over 15 guest cast members to recast. Would be a nightmare to get at least 15 people that look sound and act exactly like the original cast members. Replicating effects would be cheap but hiring those to make those effects wouldn’t be. For costumes and sets on Marco Polo would be easy enough to replicate as there are telesnaps however in some stories where no telesnaps exist it’s going to be nigh on impossible to get it spot on. You would be cheaper and easier to pay an animation team to animate the episodes

People say now that you could remake it with David Bradley and a replacement actor for Patrick Troughtons Doctor, but then Fans would say that it was a travesty. I personally would be prefer Animated Reconstructions for missing episodes as they do well enough to complete stories that are either partially or completely missing from the archives – and considering that the lost episode Soundtracks go for Stupid Amounts on eBay and Amazon, I would be happy with just Animated Reconstructions to fill in the gaps.

It’s a shame, as it’s one of my favorite docs from the DVDs, but I suppose it could slot in on any of the seasons where the daleks show up (although it is Genesis themed with the whole tapes theme so it’s still a bit odd)

I had feared that as the effects (not many) had been rendered in standard definition back in 2001 would not cut the mustard and be dropped. It’d be great if they could be upscaled, or even re-rendered, as they account for less than two minutes of footage, and Nerva Beacon is a brilliant design, both the old school model and the CGI enhancement. ☺️

I havent watched many classic stories and only ‘Robots of Death’ from the Tom Baker years, soI will definatly buy this. Its a good price (Comsidering the DVD’s for these stories come to roughly the same prive brand new).

So I’m avoiding this Blu-ray release, because I’m not going to continually buy mostly the same stuff on every next format that comes out. Blu-ray’s been around for ages now, and it seems a bit late in the day to start releasing all the classic series on them.

There really isn’t enough for me to warrant spending my hard earned on something I already have in one form or another. The ‘new’ features I doubt won’t tell me anything much new which hasn’t already been said previously in books, DWM etc.

May 28th, 2018 - 10:50pmTo be fair there is unlikely to be a next format after blu ray. The blu rays push the picture quality as close to studio as technically possible. It’s not going to be worth doing 4K or whatever the main format is in 2030 The blu rays are rammed with 20 hours full of extras. There really isn’t any more that you can add to make an upgrade to the next format worthwhile plus good chunk of people involved with the show will have sadly passed by then. This is by all accounts the definitive version of season 12.

June 4th, 2018 - 8:56amIt’s for myself the most essential clsssuc Doctor Who home format release ever. Who’d have thought when I got Ark in Space again in early 2013, that we’d finally get Classic Doctor Who on Blu-ray ever, and with this much love and attention. I can’t wait to see this in two weeks now, the anticipation has been fever pitch for me for three months now.
What will the menus be like? Finally seeing Revenge of the Cybermen with great newer effects (like so many great titles). I just can’t wait!

May 28th, 2018 - 6:28amDvd and blu ray sales have declined however I doubt it will ever fully die. £894 million was spent on dvds in 2016 so there clearly is still a market. There has been some saying dvd was dying 10 years ago and it just hasn’t happened. There is always going to be a percentage of people wanting physical media. Most doctor who fans prefer to buy on disc for their collections so if these sets have the sales figures I can expect them to carry on and do the lot. Collectors are diehards got to get the lot. If vinyl can be produced in the 90s and 00s in small numbers despite being supposedly dead there is nothing to stop bbc studios from continuing to produce these sets in very small numbers in a luxuary package aimed at the hardcore collectors if there is enough of an audience for it

May 26th, 2018 - 11:18pmWhen it was announced it was implied that it was from scratch however I’m now led to believe it’s actually the dvd masters are the starting point for this release. It’s far from a case of just upscaling from dvd however as additional restoration work was done to the episodes as there is a lot of restoration techniques used that was not available when they were mastered for dvd. The whole remastering for blu ray took 3 months so it’s more than just an upscale from dvd

May 29th, 2018 - 12:28pmIn the latest DWM Peter Crocker says “Initially I expected to use the previous dvd masters as a starting point, but I soon realised that because techniques and tools for restoration have developed so much in the last decade, it would be better to go back to the original tapes.” I really can’t wait for this release now the new special feature look great and can’t wait to see what they do next

You have the easiest to restore pertwee first. Given how poor s24 is regarded by fans it could be suicide to release it first for Sylvester. S25 is a safer bet. For me S22 is the better of the 2 c. Baker seasons so better releasing first. You need some highly regarded releases nearer the end so I’d hold off s 13 till nearer the end.
2020
S7, S20, S24, S15
50th aniversary of pertwee debut seems like a no brainier. S20 would be ideal follow on for p Davidson. S24 has got a horrible reputation but at least it keeps s26 till closer to the end. S15 has its clunkers but still popular regardless
2021
S9, S17 S23, S2
At this point S9 is the only pertwee season that doesn’t have colour issues. S17 I’m not a fan of outside the first 2 stories. S23 completes Peter’s run. Season 2 is the easiest b and w season to complete.
2022
S 18, S8, S26, S6
Gets s18 out the way. S8 could do with some touching up so better leaving till later. S26 completes the McCoy era. S6 is the easiest troughton season to do
2023
S14, S11, S21, S1
Season 14 gives a strong tom season for the 60th. A colour version of invasion dinos 1 would be an excellent 60th aniversary present and it completes the pertwee era. S21 completes the Davidson era. 60th aniversary of the 1st season seems a no brainer
2024
S5, S13,S3,S4
Completes Hartnell troughton and tom Baker eras

May 26th, 2018 - 11:13amI think they should release the first 6 seasons in 10-12 years time, to allow time for any newly found episodes. Then, when season 1 does get released, it’ll be a big deal.
But I personally would release it like this, with year release dates:
2018 – Season 12
2019 – Season 7 & Season 8
2020 – Season 13 & Season 19
2021 – Season 9 & Season 10
2022 – Season 14 & Season 11
2023 – Season 25 & Season 26 & Season 27 (I would reduce the cost of these 3 seasons to £28 each as they are less episodes)
2024 – Season 15 & Season 16 & Season 17
2025 – Season 20 & Season 21
2026 – Season 22 & Season 23 (S23 is £28)
2027 – Season 24 & Season 18
2028 – Season 1 & Season 2
2029 – Season 3 & Season 4 & Season 5 (These 3 seasons are released as one whole set, with a removable case so you can match them up with each individual season, £60 if no other episodes are found by then) & Season 6

May 26th, 2018 - 6:15pmI’m calling it (not an insider) Tom’s range will see it through till the end with season 18, that’s 12-18 as Tom baker season 1-7. Simultaneously a release of Jon pertwee’s season 7-11 or seasons 1-5 (U.S.) will occur. Order of release: Tom :S1, Jon:S1, Tom:S2 and so on with possible slight overlap at 3 or less total season sets a year. (Again, just deductive speculation on my part but I’m still calling it.)

May 31st, 2018 - 1:52amI like much of your reasoning and ordering Gordon. Really my own was based mainly on ways of mixing up different eras of the show (popular with different people), while having regards to the amount of restoration work involved and the quality of the prints etc.- leaving some of the harder stuff to last.
Perhaps it is worth holding back on the b&w in the hope of more recoveries and Season 1 in particular for the 60th anniversary makes sense. While I’d dearly love to see more b&w Doctor Who recovered, I think being realistic about it means that the most likely thing to find its way back to the archives now is Web of Fear 3 – everything else is a very long shot, dependent no doubt on more hard work and incredible luck. I think we are going to be looking at some animation etc.
Really the order to go depends on what you are trying to achieve. If its about the technical quality of the source material then you go with the most filmed material and best quality video tape (from original maters where possible). If its about sales with the expectation that sales will drop off as bluray ages as a mass format then you probably churn through Baker’s material, Season 10 and some Davidson. If you intend to do the lot as a a niche product for a fairly large fan base then you hold off on some of the goodies as a way of keeping up interests, anticipation and demand. You can also slip in a few dud Seasons along the way. Another approach is running parallel series – moving through the doctors in order. You could have one that is Baker (12 -18), One that Is Pertwee (7-11) and one that is Davidson, Baker and McCoy (19-26). You could also decide to leave the b&w material out of it with a view that there is nothing to be gained in terms of quality, the Seasons are too long, and that there are too many gaps and too much missing material.I hope they don’t do this, but I’m wondering how large the market and appetite for 60s Who will remain given that they are all out there in DVD quality. I think an important factor is more recoveries, quality reconstructions and bonus material.

May 24th, 2018 - 3:52pmI don’t think so but it can have an opportunity to go back to Ambassadors to restore colour further as the colour tapes they worked with had recorded colour interference. Otherwise, include the very minimal extra Spearhead Normal, the extras from Special and Blu-ray. All extras from Doctor Who and the Silurians and Ambassadors. And all extras from Inferno Normal and Special.

May 24th, 2018 - 10:41pm@Gordon, I would think that a bit odd jumping around out of order… Seeing how it’s called Tom baker season 1 in the u.s. then the only logical option would be Tom Baker season 2, Jon Pertwee season 1, or Davison/ C.Baker/ McCoy. Seeing as how Collin and Sylvester are less likely sells due to shoddy scripts and or production values, Im thinking 4th, 3rd, and 5th are the most likely candidates to make the whole run through

May 24th, 2018 - 11:25pmI’m only reporting on what’s been rumoured on forums. It would seem a bit baffling if s18 does end up being next so I do think that’s unlikely. The problem with doing the pertwee seasons in order is that s7 isn’t an easy season to start with. Yes spearhead is pretty much ready to go and inferno has had a lot of restoration work done for the se which would help for its blu ray but ambassadors needs a lot of work to get it up to standard and Silurians could possibly get better results if done the same way as the inferno se but it’s very costly and time consuming with no guarantee of improvement. It would be a shame if they didn’t do the whole c.baker and McCoy era as there was a lot of stuff of that time period that didn’t have room on the dvds

Love to read about Doctor who news… Strangely enough there hasn’t been much internet interest in Doctor who shortly after the last Regeneration… It’s been a bit desolate on that front:(

For example, the “love and war” doc looks at the 90s books so will perhaps be moved to season 26 and the Ian Marter doc has been moved to season 12, when he was the companion.

Hartnell season 2 with 2 animated ”Crusade’ episodes, and lets hope they find ‘Marco Polo’ for a complete season 1.

May 23rd, 2018 - 2:01pmThe BBC said that they are trying their best to upgrade as many stories as possible to bring them to collections such as these! So expect more. My guess is we are likely to get all of 4, 5, 6, and 7 as they are complete and easier to market as a complete set.

Plus a couple of PDF files.
They will appear on a future box set to correlate them with a more appropriate season and that’s the plan for all box sets going forward. So all the DVD extras will eventually be ported over, just not necessarily with the story they were originally with on DVD.
There will also though be one additional extra (On Target with Ian Marter) that was originally on the Carnival of Monsters: Special Edition DVD.

May 22nd, 2018 - 10:01pmI think it looks stunning. I mean, great value for money for a first time buyer, I don’t think I have the funds to invest in it though, after all I’m re buying the stories and committing to 26 Seasons of re-bought stories in excess of £900 altogether.
And I hate to say it, I wish they’d have used the booklet cover as the main cover, I think the booklet cover artwork just looks stunningly modern. It works so well. Although, I get what they are going for with the larger image of the corresponding Doctors to make it a running set of multiple Seasons.

New restoration work. 5.1 mixes. 13 hours of new extras plus 7 hours of extras from the dvds to make 20 hours full of extras. Expanded photo gallery’s over 2000 pdfs. Gorgeous packaging. Absolute top notch

A shame, as the content would be something to treasure but the packaging will just end up looking tatty. It’s a premium price to pay again for a product I already own so was hoping for something more sturdy that would last.

May 23rd, 2018 - 7:28amSteve Roberts of the Restoration Team has confirmed it’s a sturdy cardboard box with plastic disc trays; that will last a very, very long time if you take care of it.
I own similar box sets that are 10-15 years old and they’re all still in perfect condition.
If it was cheap, flimsy cardboard with card sleeves for the discs then I might agree, but this is a proper high quality box set.

Although I’m not going to lie I think I’d have preferred the booklet artwork as the cover art. I get what they’re going for though, if they do more having a bigger image of the Doctor corresponding with each series makes sense.

Re the UK packaging. It’s a hard, thick card case in the shape of a hardback book. The back and front covers are slightly oversize compared to the internal box, so it really does look like a book. When you open it, there’s a stack of transparent plastic DVD holders that open like the pages of a book. On the left hand side there are two TARDIS doors held shut with a velcro tab. When you open those, there are a similar set of flaps top and bottom and those unfold to reveal the booklet.
It’s genuinely looks and feels like a high quality item.

The s12 blu ray is aparently region free according to Steve Roberts so if your tv/blu ray set is 50hz compatible it should work
