Original VHS Cover and details

Whilst trying to return Ian and Barbara to the twentieth century The Doctor attempts an unorthodox new technique, causing, the TARDIS doors to open in mid-flight setting alarms ringing inside the craft.

Arriving on Earth, the time-travellers discover that they have all been reduced in size – they are now minute people in a world of giant objects.

The TARDIS has landed them between the cracks in a garden patio – a garden teeming with giant worms, ants and cats.

All deadly hazards for the miniature travellers.

To make matters worse, the TARDIS crew are caught up in the trials of a deadly new insecticide -DN6. A chemical so deadly that all insect life is threatened – a chemical that is also lethal to minuscule time-travellers…

This story was originally broadcast on BBC1 between 31 October- 14 November 1964.

Actually got this from a charity shop a few months ago, it’s rare you see a Classic Who DVD in a charity shop. Haven’t watched it yet.

Its not a glitch. Its a poor quality film insert apparently. There is very little that can be done due.

Watched the part 3-4 recon of planet of giants. Not perfect (the lip syncis a bit out the animation and cgi is basic and the cgi cat gave me a giggle) but i really enjoyed it. The replacement voices took a few minutes to get used to but then i lost myself in the story and really liked the voices.

This should be an interesting DVD with the parts three and four – though sad that no actors are on the DVD commentary.

Producer Ed Stradling has described the reconstruction in this way:

“The reconstructed sequences use mostly footage re-used (and sometimes tweaked) from the existing episodes, plus some newly shot material and some CGI.

For the dialogue shots, the the lip sync matches the pace and length of sentences, but obviously not the actual words. So many of these sequences look a bit like a dubbed foreign language movie. This took me a while to get used to but was the only way of presenting the dialogue.”

I think it is brilliant too. Very refreshing from the photo collages we get, as good as they are.

The best times in fandom in my experience were the Target novelisation releases; the anticipation of owning the book, not just to learn about the story in more detail, but that all important summation-the cover. When The Visitation came out and was merely a photo it really dampened spirits. I still study the Target covers, but only art ones

The photo collage dvd covers have never sparked the same level of conversation as something more art based

It could mean the Verity Lambert Obituary on “The Time Meddler”, but I think, as this was supposed to be released later than “The Reign of Terror” this year that part one would have been on that, and still will be, as it was due to come out before this…

This isn’t the best cover ever, really… I mean, it’s not bad, but it’s hardly the most inspirational cover ever. Whilst some of Lee Binding’s cover art is brilliant, like his the Krotons and the Mutants, but this is a bit below par… Please bring back Clayton Hickman! It’s a shame he only does box sets.

2 things. One, the edge of destruction, really? There’s better first doctor eps than that. Two, shouldn’t the fifth doctor have a representation of him alone rather than just with the other doctors?

    • Gordon

      May 3rd, 2012 - 1:14am

You say its the best doctor who no dowbt but there is a lot better stories so there is doubt. There are better first doctor stories that exist that are better than that. Dalek invasion of earth or time medlar represents the first doctor better than edge of distruction. Tomb is probably the best pat surviving pat story even though mind robber isnt far behind. I would plug for daemons or ambassadors but spearhead is a great choice for john.

    • Gordon

      May 3rd, 2012 - 1:25am

No way id pick keeper of traken as the best 4th doctor story (i wouldnt even pick as best of season 18. Robot, Genesis of the daleks or city of death are much better choices for 4. Caves of andrizani is not only the best fifth doctor story it wasvoted as no1 doctor who story of all time by dwm readers. Dont think anybody would say twin dilema is the best of doctor who or colin’s era. Lightweight story ott acting poor effects even for 84. Colin even said it was poor. Plus number 200 out of 200 in a poll by dwm readers says it all.

    • Gordon

      May 3rd, 2012 - 1:28am

Vengance on varos or revelation of the daleks are way better choices for colin. Battlefield is good but there are better ones out there. Fenric being one

    • McGann is the Doctor

      May 3rd, 2012 - 3:22pm

What do you mean “without a doubt ?” I hate Keeper of Traken !

The End of Time was good I thought, much better than any other story of David’s era, even Planet of the Dead !

See what I mean ? Alot of you are reading that, and thinking “No way !” So you see there are no factually good stories, only popular ones, and personal favourite ones. How can you not have Two Doctors on that list, ❗

    • Mr Who 63

      May 3rd, 2012 - 7:34pm

Yes i agree, the two doctors is a good one, not sure about planet of the dead?
Maybe choose the christmas invasion for david tennant , erm hartnell? — well i quite would have liked williams suggestion of ‘the son of doctor who’ where him and his son are chasing each other around in space, that WOULD have been the best hartenell. What do YOU think are your eleven favourites?

    • Gordon

      May 3rd, 2012 - 10:34pm

Well dwm did a poll in 2009 of all 200 doctor who stories and these were the top story for each doctor and the where they came in the poll in brackets out of 200.
      1st The daleks (37)
2nd evil of the daleks (18)
      3rd inferno (32)
      4th Genesis of t)he Daleks (3)
      5th Caves of andrizani (1)
6th Revelation of the daleks (46)
7th Remembrance of the daleks (14)
      8th the movie(135)
      9th empty child (5)
      10th Blink (2)

      The Mind of Evil
      Death to the Daleks
      Terror of the Zygons

The vhs had tom baker narrating the gaps. Its believed that is the version we are getting on dvd. April 30th, 2012 - 3:37pm

After the pilot episode and first episode, this is one of the few stories in the Hartnell era set in comtempary UK (for the 60s, obviously). It’s a nice little story with great effects for its budget and a really great bad guy who is something really special for an era where the only villians where historical or monsters. It does have a lot of problems though so unless the rumoured promise of a reconstructed 4th episode (Episode 3 and 4 were edited together) doesn’t tempt you then I’d wait for the price to go down before buying.
