Legacy DVD Shada / More that 30 years in The Tardis

Doctor Who Legacy (Shada) DVD

A double helping of ‘Doctor Who’ treasures. Never aired on television due to a strike in 1979, and never fully completed, the six-part adventure ‘Shada’ traces the chase to recover a powerful book, the Artifacts of Gallifrey, stolen from retired timelord Professor Chronotis (Denis Carey).

Skagra (Christopher Neame) is the evil despot responsible for this foul jiggery pokery. Original footage from this episode was used as the Fourth Doctor’s involvement in ‘The Five Doctors’, before it was reassembled, with an older and portlier Tom Baker narrating the missing gaps.

Also included is the BBC-produced documentary ‘More Than Thirty Years in the Tardis’, a compilation of clips spanning the first thirty years of the Doctor, including some never before seen on television, plus interviews with the many stars, writers, producers and designers.

The following features and quotes (via tv shows on dvd) are listed in addition to those shown below…

  • Shada – Flash version
  • Taken Out of Time
  • Now and Then
  • Strike! Strike! Strike!
  • Being a Girl Women in Doctor Who
  • Remembering Nicholas Courtney
  • Doctor Who Stories – Peter Purves
  • The Lambert Tapes – Part 1
  • Those Deadly Divas
  • Photo Galleries
  • Easter Egg
  • PDF materials: Radio Times Listings
  • Production Note Subtitles

New to DVD! Digitally remastered Doctor Who classic Shada! Written by Douglas Adams as his final contribution to Doctor Who, Shada was envisaged as a Time Lord story without a Gallifreyan setting. It sees the Doctor bringing Romana to present-day Earth to visit Professor Chronotis, an elderly Time Lord who absconded from Gallifrey and now lives a quiet academic life at St Cedd’s College in Cambridge.

Also seeking Chronotis is a scientist called Skagra who has a device, in the form of a floating sphere, with which he intends to steal the Professor’s mind and thereby learn the location of a book entitled The Worshipful and Ancient Law of Gallifrey. Skagra eventually succeeds in obtaining the book, which has been borrowed from the Professor’s study by a student named Chris Parsons. He then kidnaps Romana and hijacks the TARDIS.

SHADA.

The long forgotten adventure destined to bring the Doctor face to face with the evil Skagra and his master plan for total omnipotence.
Recording of this 6 part adventure in 1979 was sadly never completed until now – with the aid of Tom Baker, Doctor No. 4.

Now all available filmed and recorded sequences are linked by his brilliant narration allowing BBC Video to unveil Shada in its entirety at last.

When one of the Artefacts of Gallifrey – a dangerous book dating back to the time of the all-powerful Rasillon – goes missing from his study, Cambridge professor and retired Timelord Dr. Chronotis calls in the aid of the Doctor and Romano.

The Doctor is very worried. Who knows what powers could be unleashed if the book falls into the wrong hands? Then the mysterious Skagra arrives armed with a thought-draining sphere and a scheme for one universal mind. But first he must get hold of the book…

This unique pack contains a video and a copy of the original scripts – a great addition to the wealth of Doctor Who titles on BBC Video.

if he can spend all that money on animations, why cant he spend some money on copyright? i mean surly copyright must be cheaper than animation, and given that he is rich he could easily afford it, even if it is more expensive than animations.

Why is Levine making these animations and not showing it to anyone?

    • Gordon

      November 2nd, 2012 - 10:26am

Because he wants them. He did do a couple of shada showings for a couple of fans that got to see it at his house He would like to have them released officialy but he never gets to because of various different reasons. Out of intrest in total levine has done about 40 different projects and the only official release was the planet of giants recon but that was because he hassled ed stradling till he let him do it and that was bbc worldwide funded.

Why on earth don’t the Beeb take on Ian Levine’s finished copy of Shada, give the man credit! And give the fans a completed version of Shada – it’s more than we deserve after the shoddy way the BBC wiped early episodes! Please please please. If you have to release this unfinished symphony of 70’s Who you could easily put together Ian’s version too. As a long long standing fan, it’s what I want! I have spent £££ on the BBC as so have many fans. Put your differences aside for a moment and do what’s right. Give us Shada!

I believe there is some legal issue involved that it cant be released as ian himsef addmited he did not clear rights etc first. Even though he offered it for free The problem is ians shada isnt perfect. Some work needs redoing (alegedly) which would cost the bbc money. Hiring tom to re do the tom scenes would not be cheap (8 grand alegidly) and getting mark ayres to redub the score would cost them as well. Can see it costing too much especially on the limited budget bbc worldwide alocates

Destiny of the Daleks (1979) is in my opinion a very good Dr.Who story from the Tom Baker era. Especially as it was a Sequel to Genesis of the Daleks made in 1975. This was also the first story to feature Romana Mk 2.

Just seen the trailer for this box set, and i must be honest, all the fawning over Shada….it was going to be the best story ever, etc etc – tagged on a season that includes the appaling Horns of Nimon, Nightmare of Eden, and disappointing Destiny of the Daleks, and from memories of watching the video years ago – I find it a bit hard to believe really. I hope to be corrected when the dvd comes out, but until then i’ll be sceptical…at least that season did have City of Death!

I think if it was finished in 1979 it would have been remembered as the 2nd best story of that season. Not as good as city of death. Douglas adams himself wasnt much of a fan of shada saying people will most likely remember it as spmething thaat was a couple of eps too long

      October 24th, 2012 - 6:12am

I rather liked Destiny of the Daleks the story was good but yes season 17 was a bit dodgy and for the last story to be unfinished is rather a shame. I’m looking forward to this release for the extras and the narration l’ve never watched Shada before (VHS Version) and the documentary with Tom will be Great!

      October 24th, 2012 - 10:10am

Destiny of the Daleks and Creature from the pit are two of the most enjoyable tom baker stories EVER.

They had good intriguing stories, albeit Davros and the green phallus weren’t the best portrayal, but the imagination in the stories was great, not to mention Tom Baker was on fine form ! ❗

As for City of Death, most overrated story ever. OOH ! It’s in paris ! 😛

At last!!! Someone else who doesn’t think that Shada would have been that excellent. I got the video when it was released and thought it only slightly better than the grainy copy before Tom got on it. I prefer DotD and CftP to CoD.

Now, all that aside, I have to say the trailer for Shada and More Than 30 years in the TARDIS does look good – so pleased that Tom is in the documentary, I hope Lalla is as well. But lets be frank, season 17 wasn’t the best of years for Who and I doubt very much that Shada would be seen as being a classic.

The cover looks good. This all takes me back 20 years nearly when 30 Years in the Tardis was on TV originally, it was very exciting because new Who had vanished from the schedules for at least 4 years by then, though we were content with repeats of Time meddler and Mind Robber on, i think, BBC 2. Some great (new) scenes in it like Sarah Jane under the influence of a Sontaran, and what happened to the Brigadier as he’s driven off by an Auton? As for Shada, i hope Tom Baker’s introduction (before the first episode) is also included, (cont.)

      October 19th, 2012 - 10:39pm

Here is what steve roberts had to say on the ian shada situation. We all went in to a meeting with the express intention of figuring out a way to make his version work for DVD, but finally had to give in to the huge commercial, legal and artistic pressures that were in the way. Nobody was being lazy and despite several people having legitimate axes to grind with IL for various reasons, everyone was trying to make it work. At the end of the day, Dan had to make the decision which was best for the range and best for the label.”

possibly, though i wouldnt mind a special edition of pyramids of mars, or horror of fang rock.

Pyramids of Mars doesn’t really need one, but I agree with Horror of Fang Rock – the special features on it were distinctly underwhelming.

so that’s not part of a re -visitation then?

no its, just a normal blu-ray release, its the only classic story which will be released on bluray as all footage was all filmed on film, and therefore the only story possible for blu-ray. The 4th revisited story will probably be something like ‘horror of fang rock’ or something else. i hope its ‘horror’

i think the last revisit will be one of these:

      the dalek invasion of earth
      the vistilation
      the green death
      ghost light
      or horror of fang rock
