Legacy DVD Shada / More that 30 years in The Tardis

Doctor Who Legacy (Shada) DVD

A double helping of ‘Doctor Who’ treasures. Never aired on television due to a strike in 1979, and never fully completed, the six-part adventure ‘Shada’ traces the chase to recover a powerful book, the Artifacts of Gallifrey, stolen from retired timelord Professor Chronotis (Denis Carey).

Skagra (Christopher Neame) is the evil despot responsible for this foul jiggery pokery. Original footage from this episode was used as the Fourth Doctor’s involvement in ‘The Five Doctors’, before it was reassembled, with an older and portlier Tom Baker narrating the missing gaps.

Also included is the BBC-produced documentary ‘More Than Thirty Years in the Tardis’, a compilation of clips spanning the first thirty years of the Doctor, including some never before seen on television, plus interviews with the many stars, writers, producers and designers.

  • Strike! Strike! Strike!
  • Being a Girl Women in Doctor Who
  • Remembering Nicholas Courtney
  • Doctor Who Stories – Peter Purves
  • The Lambert Tapes – Part 1
  • Those Deadly Divas
  • Photo Galleries
  • Easter Egg
  • PDF materials: Radio Times Listings

New to DVD! Digitally remastered Doctor Who classic Shada! Written by Douglas Adams as his final contribution to Doctor Who, Shada was envisaged as a Time Lord story without a Gallifreyan setting. It sees the Doctor bringing Romana to present-day Earth to visit Professor Chronotis, an elderly Time Lord who absconded from Gallifrey and now lives a quiet academic life at St Cedd’s College in Cambridge.

Also seeking Chronotis is a scientist called Skagra who has a device, in the form of a floating sphere, with which he intends to steal the Professor’s mind and thereby learn the location of a book entitled The Worshipful and Ancient Law of Gallifrey. Skagra eventually succeeds in obtaining the book, which has been borrowed from the Professor’s study by a student named Chris Parsons. He then kidnaps Romana and hijacks the TARDIS.

SHADA.

The long forgotten adventure destined to bring the Doctor face to face with the evil Skagra and his master plan for total omnipotence.
Recording of this 6 part adventure in 1979 was sadly never completed until now – with the aid of Tom Baker, Doctor No. 4.

Now all available filmed and recorded sequences are linked by his brilliant narration allowing BBC Video to unveil Shada in its entirety at last.

When one of the Artefacts of Gallifrey – a dangerous book dating back to the time of the all-powerful Rasillon – goes missing from his study, Cambridge professor and retired Timelord Dr. Chronotis calls in the aid of the Doctor and Romano.

The Doctor is very worried. Who knows what powers could be unleashed if the book falls into the wrong hands? Then the mysterious Skagra arrives armed with a thought-draining sphere and a scheme for one universal mind. But first he must get hold of the book…

This unique pack contains a video and a copy of the original scripts – a great addition to the wealth of Doctor Who titles on BBC Video.

Pity they can’t just do some animated episodes/scenes for the missing parts of this story…, they’ve done it for other stories after all.

Steve roberts said: ‘More Than Thirty Years in the TARDIS’ had no restoration, other than a simple automated DVNR pass. There was little point, where would we have stopped? I worked on that show and from a technical point of view it was exceptionally rough, with many generations of Betacam SP involved. Should we have rebuilt it from the rushes tapes, replaced every classic series shot with newly restored versions? We would have been there for months… This was a low budget release, as reflected in its price point

The January release is always the most exciting as it kickstarts the releases after a few months break. We know some release, re-releases and specials are due, but has anyone got any idea what we can expect next january? Is everything going to be re-released again? I hope not. Not just for costs sake, but because it’d nice to think we have something complete. I suppose season box sets could be an option? Wondering what anybody has heard!

Would like Dimensions in Time/Comic Relief Special out because the 7th doctor’s era isn’t really finished. Plus I think the 30 years in the tardis doctor logo should be the same as lost in time.

      January 2nd, 2013 - 7:48pm

Dimensions in time wont get a dvd release.Everybody involved in dit did it for free on the condition that it would be broadcast once and never be comercially released. Even if there was no legal issues in releasing The cost of restoration team getting access to dimensions in time from children in need is £56,000. Just not affordable for what would be an extra

    • Anonymous

      January 3rd, 2013 - 6:30pm

The condition was that it would never be released commercially for profit.

In theory they could get away with it if they sent the money to Children in Need (it would make sense as that was the original intended charity).

    • Gordon

      January 4th, 2013 - 12:43am

      http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Dimensions_in_Time Says

This story was produced especially for Children in Need, and the cast and production crew gave their services free of charge on conditions laid down at the time by the actors’ union, equity.Dimensions would receive only one transmission and would never be exploited commercially in any way.

    • Gordon

      January 4th, 2013 - 1:55am

Think that would include for charitable purposes as well. selling it to Raise money for children in need would involve making a profit out of it even if all of the profit goes to cin. that would still be classifing it as exploiting/ it for cash.

i would recommend they do a sontaran experiment se due to the lack of special features and also a genesis of the daleks se. also why does it say special value edition on the sontaran experiment dvd

    • Gordon

      January 1st, 2013 - 8:59pm

It was a line of releases that were budget priced(along with timelash black orchid and a couple of others). It had a rrp of 9.99 and had fewer extras to reflect the cheaper price. It was discontinued as it became too expensive to manufactuer dvds with the recession. Appart from a making of there really isnt anything else missing from sontaran experiment. There is nothing wrong with genesis. Its got a full disc full of extras and the picture quality is as good as its going to get
