February 26th, 2021 - 2:31pmAbsolutely amazing magazine, bookazine or whatever. 1965 was the year I discovered Doctor who, and in particular the Daleks. And this publication has it all. It also name checks the Palace Cinema on Erdington High Street in Birmingham where one of the winners of the TV21 “Win a Dalek competition” claimed his prize. And where I first saw “Doctor Who and the Daleks”. A life altering experience.
Roll on “The Doctor Who Chronicles 1967” I say. Hope it’s not too long a wait.

February 26th, 2021 - 1:09pmNoting a number of people’s comments below (and I’ve purchased The Complete History myself) I got hold of a copy myself this morning. It is quite nice and if you can afford it and can get hold of a copy I would recommend it.

February 25th, 2021 - 12:19pmInteresting range, I gave up on the bookazines after the first few “Essentials” came out. They seemed a lot for what they were and it was often information that was available elsewhere or that didn’t interest me very much.
These look good, if possibly a bit similar to the complete history set. I can’t see them doing every year in the shows history though, that would be a 10+ year commitment. I think they’ll just pick and choose years for as long as they’re popular. Think I’ll give this one a miss but if they do 1974 or 2005 I’ll definitely consider picking them up.
I still prefer the companion specials that they do as almost like the “official” guides to each episode. Looking forward to the next 12th Doctor one although it’s been a while now. I hope it’s still coming! Once they’ve got up to date with them, I’d love to see them tackle some classic seasons with the same treatment!

Nearest one to where I live is Doncaster, so I’ll wait till things are more normal then pop in and get my copy.
Usually get the normal Dr Who mags from Cortonwood Morrisons nr Barnsley, unfortunately they never get any specials in.

February 25th, 2021 - 12:08amLooks excellent but, assuming (ultimately) all years will be covered (they may not, but who would collect a series with a highly subjective choice of ‘key’ years that’s full of uncovered gaps) – that’s 57 years to cover…surely (aside from the odd rediscovered photo) these will be largely a rehash of previously covered material.
Even with an unlikely “quarterly” magazine release, that’s well over 14 Years before the collection (even just up to the present, not beyond!) will be complete; and given the marketing drive to always use the ‘current’ logo, unless a clear advance commitment to remain consistent is made, no way will the cover presentation remain the same across the entire range…
It may just seem a trivial cosmetic concern, but DVDs aside (so far! – thanks only to their thoughtfullY ‘reversible’ covers), it’s exasperating how every conceivable longterm line of Who merchandise has failed in this respect!

February 25th, 2021 - 4:37pmThey won’t be doing 57 years. Not much point in doing 1990-95 and 1997-2004 for starters. Also, it doesn’t really matter if the logo changes on the front does it? If such things matter, then as long as the spines stay broadly consistent then that’s more important. There were five different logos across the Target books – no one says there wasn’t any point in doing them without the same logo the whole way across the range. Nothing would ever get made or produced if we thought, “We’ll only do this if the logo can stay the same right to the end,” – including the TV show itself!

It does appear there will be an issue covering i suspect 63/64 because there are individual chapters on Vicki, Sara, Katerina and Steven, but none on Ian, Barbara and Susan.
Must admit they can think again if they think i’ll be spending a tenner on 58 issues of this. lol.

Panini (with Hachette) deliberately jumped back and forth between eras on The Complete History to keep things varied and fresh and I’d imagine we might see a similar approach with these. For instance, I wouldn’t be surprised to see, say, 2005 as the one after this and then 1970 etc. (I’m totally inventing those as selections just for the sake of argument!)

January 26th, 2021 - 11:57amThe reason for choosing 1965 may have something to do with the Daleks. Recent issues of the regular magazine have unearthed some new and interesting material relating to the “Dalekmania” phenomenon, that peaked in this year. The production design special that came out not so long ago, featured an article on Bill Constable, Production designer for the Amicus Dalek movies. Featuring a lot that can truly claim to be “Never before seen”. Who knows what else Marcus Hearn and Co uncovered, whilst putting together these earlier issues that would require a special magazine in which to present any new material. Be it in the form of articles, interviews or photographs. Personally I would love to see just one pic of Edward De Souza with the Daleks from “Mission to the Unknown” that isn’t from a recon.

February 24th, 2021 - 9:48pmI guess a 1963 could cover the whole creation and build up of Doctor Who, what TV was like then, casting process, background on Verity and Sidney, early design and then the launch and first 6 episodes. Plenty to write about if you go down that route.

I’ve never missed a issue yet and saves me a trip to smiths where they don’t always have a copy in stock.
Hope this helps many who have missed out in the past.

I’ve bought quite a few StarWars items on eBay from Germany and the postage as been fairly reasonable. ( Much better than USA anyway).

March 1st, 2021 - 9:16amHaving now got the first issue of this 1965, good news is it definitely doesn’t tread the same ground as The Complete History – that confined itself (brilliantly) to the making of the TV stories; if anything, this appears to focus on the Doctor Who as a total phenomenon – the Merch, the comics, other TV shows around that year, other DW events etc. There are 2-page overviews of the stories broadcast within 1965 but not really a focus on their production as such. In short, these are clearly not trying to be episode guides in the way the DWM ‘Season Companions’ for modern Who are.

Always available at WHSmith. When the barcode details are available I will post them so you can your local stores nearer the time

January 22nd, 2021 - 4:11pmHopefully it will fill the niche that the Collection left – as an older fan, it scratched an itch from childhood and had some lovely illustrations, but the actual content only touched very lightly on some of the context and discursive bits you get in the better DWM articles. I think this could be a very good series, with another opportunity to publish newly discovered photos from the era. The focus on a simple year rather than series is a bit of a compromise with the casual magazine shopper, not sure they actually exist at the moment!
