Character Options announces a new range of Doctor Who collector sets

THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN set will be available to order from July 20th 2021

Character Options has today revealed the next instalment of Doctor Who collectors’ sets, available exclusively online on the Character Options website.

This Character Options online exclusive set celebrates one of the most iconic, and now sadly lost, adventures of Patrick Troughton’s tenure as the Second Doctor – The Abominable Snowmen. The set includes an electronic classic TARDIS and a Second Doctor figure.

The electronic classic TARDIS, featured by Character Options for the first time in over a decade, comes with different take-off and landing sounds. The TARDIS also features the more heavily weathered exterior and new colour plus the unique reversed front doors.

The new Second Doctor figure is a truly unique release, featuring the usual highly decorated look combined with full articulation on the arms.

The Abominable Snowman, first aired on 30th September 1967, sees fans join the Second Doctor in his eighth story. Set in 1935, the TARDIS has materialised high in the Himalayas where The Doctor is trying to return a relic, a holy bell, borrowed several hundred years earlier, to the High Lama of the local Monastery. Unbeknownst to the Doctor and his companions, things have taken a dark turn and the monastery has been infiltrated by an ancient and evil alien entity known only as The Great Intelligence. The alien is using robot versions of the Yeti’s, better known as ‘the Abominable Snowmen’ a usually passive creature, to attack anyone coming near the monastery. As the Doctor becomes involved, and the full horror of what’s going on becomes clear, he vows to thwart its plans.

Al Dewar of Character notes some of the special things about this 1967 story and development of this new set.

“The Abominable Snowmen is, much like the ‘Jungles of Mechanus’ collectors set before it, quite unusual and features a lot of unique features in terms of its production. For instance the TARDIS itself is unusual in its weathered appearance, with the exterior paint covering the top signs and the colour appearing slightly more indigo than usual. Its look is generally more beaten up and scruffy than fans would usually see and features fully reversed front doors with the phone cubby box sign on right hand door with no handles. The Doctor’s look in this story echoes that of the TARDIS, with the addition of a huge shaggy fur coat held together with twine.

“It’s fair to say fans have waited an astonishingly long time for both these products and we believe fans and collectors will embrace this new electronic TARDIS and the Second Doctor in his iconic shaggy coat as depicted in this classic story.”

Perfect for all Doctor Who fans and collectors, the set comes beautifully presented in special presentation pack with diorama insert and Doctor Who heritage packaging.

It will retail at £39.99 and be available for pre-order in the UK from 20th July 2021 on the Character Options Website

Looks like they’ve sold all 4,000 already, despite over 2,000 still available an hour ago. Weird!

Oh, that’s a real shame. No excuse for that. We all need to make money, but you’re absolutely aware you’re really ripping people off doing that when it’s still completely available. You’d hope, at least, anybody so desperate for a new TARDIS at that price will Google it first and stumble on this page or similar; but I feel for gift-givers who often don’t even know the best terms to search. Disappointing.

Does anyone know, how many B&M sets are out at the start of August that we will be hunting for.
I’ve heard they were spreading these sets out with one even in December?

they do seem to be spreading them initially 5 sets due August but who knows now

As a matter of interest The Jungles of Mechanus set was announced just over 10 days before the B&M announcement, leading me to believe they may all be in the same shipment

Thanks Booboo, gives me more time to save some pennies.
I’d heard only so many were being released originally them some, I think in October with the last one, The Robot as late as December.
Just couldn’t remember how many initially though.

Looks great, doesn’t it? And so hassle-free ordering online! Such a relief to do it this way. Really crossing my fingers that this is an avenue to get some of the TARDIS sets that couldn’t be produced at the B&M price point, now.
(About the only thing even remotely approaching a critique in my mind would be that a lot of collectors could do with a brief warning to prepare for the expense of something like this. I know it’s not expensive to everyone; but for some of us, especially with a time-sensitive, exclusive release, this means a bit of a struggle or a scramble to fund. Otherwise: amazing!)

I agree, it’s excellent, but a notification for a release after payday would certainly help! In no way a real criticism though, as the amount of characters/sets they’ve given us in the last 3 years especially has been astounding.

This is a bit outside the scope of the article, so if it doesn’t get approved, I’ll understand.

The set description makes note of the fact that this TARDIS features the reversed front doors, but why were they reversed on the prop to begin with?

    Thanks!

perfectly valid point, it was assembled the wrong way round when it went on location in bits

    • Lee Moone

      July 21st, 2021 - 12:18am

Several stories from Evil – Wheel had the doors or sign around the wrong way due to someone hanging it incorrectly.

    • David Minter

      July 21st, 2021 - 2:12pm

I was going to ask if the sign was a separate prop that was attached independently of the doors. If the sign was made into the door, I would think there would be no way the door could be wrongly attached without the sign facing into the TARDIS interior. 🙂

Actually, to be honest, until it was pointed out in this figure set’s description from CO where they highlighted the door sign was swapped sides, I never even noticed it was incorrectly placed in other stories. Maybe the swapped sign TARDIS was in scenes in missing episodes?

    • BrunoB

      July 20th, 2021 - 1:52pm

Al Dewar said this morning that the Second Doctor with fur coat was ONLY available in this set and not in future B&M sets

    • UKFan

      July 20th, 2021 - 1:57pm

I suspect it may come along eventually as it will help offset the cost of the new moulds.

    • The Outcast

      July 20th, 2021 - 3:41pm

If the figure line lasts for a long while, we’ll probably get a Five Doctors variant, but that won’t be for a long, long time. As in, not this year, or next, or even next. We’ll be a long while off getting a fur coat 2 variant. A long while.

    • David Minter

      July 21st, 2021 - 10:54pm

I always wanted a The Five Doctors Dalek variant to be released. It would take only minor retooling. Just different dome lights, I think, is all that is necessary. However,a Five Doctors set is most likely to just feature the Doctors. Although a Doctors set seems less likely if the 2nd isn’t going to be released with a fur coat in any other set than the CO web store exclusive.

Now, an interesting question about Five Doctors figures is the History Of The Daleks sets. Would that story simply be skipped because there’s only one Dalek in it? They could easily just add the different dome lights, but those History sets contain 2 Dalek figures. Since CO can’t afffordably make a new destroyed Dalek with Kaled mutant in it as seen in The Five Doctors, a History set of Five Doctors seems unlikely.

Dont panic there is plenty .. there is a limit on website traffic …

the doors thing i agree with in the comments above .. i complained and it still happened with the first second doctor Set … this one is not held in the same way .. rest assured. and i finally managed to get the Doctor to be standing on the ground not hovering above it .. so two big steps forward! …

      What doors thing??

    • booboo

      July 20th, 2021 - 3:10pm

they used tape at one time which warped some doors so these use plastic tabs now

    • Gareth Pugh

      July 20th, 2021 - 3:10pm

MJS, the last couple of waves of B&M Tardis sets came with the Tardis held in place in the packaging by a length of sticky tape that if anything squeezed a bit too tightly causing the doors to ‘bow’ inwards a bit and leaving them a bit warped ever after. Al’s saying they have rectified that with this new (CO-exclusive) set.

My “gut feeling” and i maybe wrong here is that the containers arrived, but has to go through checks still so they are giving it the max time it should be. Also CO have to pack and arrange shipping for potentially 1000’s of these to be sent out all in one ago, which may take a bit of time!

    • ClaphamRob

      July 20th, 2021 - 10:50pm

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The tape on the doors was starting to drive me mad, so replacing them with anything non-sticky is a huge positive! Keep up the fantastic work, we really do appreciate it.

Notice Al isn’t presenting the video from his desk this time. Too cluttered with the upcoming B&M sets maybe? Haha! We can hope for an announcement soon maybe.

But for this set, I’ve got to say, it looks great! Very nice detailing and significant variants people have wanted for ages. Well done Al and CO!

The price seems fair enough to me. An electronic TARDIS is usually about £25 and a single release figure about £15. Factor in the new tooling, increasing costs of production (Brexit, COVID) and the fact that limited edition exclusives are always a bit higher in the price bracket then £40 makes total sense.

Having praised it and accepted the pricing, unfortunately it’s still not for me. I don’t get TARDIS sets generally so this is outside my usual purchases.

But, I still really enjoy seeing it’s release, brings more hope for more figures in the future and it’s great to see so many other fans will be thrilled to get it.

I just had a thought: do you think CO will have learned from their mistake with the doors getting warped by the banding/tape? I was lucky with my original War Games Tardis set, but the second one I got later (once things started to go on clearance) had visible warping. Thankfully I’d bought it for a custom build (which I’ve yet to get around to), so it didn’t matter so much. I sincerely hope we won’t get warped doors on this Tardis though (not having paid £39.99).
