Big Finish Classic Doctors New Monsters Volume 03
Classic Doctors New Monsters is Back!
An array of classic Doctors take on fan-favourite monsters from the new era of Doctor Who in a long-awaited box set of adventures, due for release in August 2022 by Big Finish Productions.
Five years after the second Classic Doctors New Monsters installment come four brand-new full-cast audio dramas starring Tom Baker (Fourth Doctor), Colin Baker (Sixth Doctor), Tim Treloar (Third Doctor), and Paul McGann (Eighth Doctor). The stellar cast also includes Louise Jameson (Leela), Sadie Miller (Sarah Jane Smith), and India Fisher (Charlotte Pollard).
Across the box set, the various incarnations of the Time Lord encounter the dangerously cowardly Tivolians that first featured in the 2011 Doctor Who TV story The God Complex. The Hoxx of Balhoon — brother of Moxx glimpsed in The End of the World (2005) — and the brain-eating Dream Crabs from Last Christmas (2014) also feature.
Classic Doctors New Monsters 3 is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition 4-disc CD box set (+ download for just £24.99) or digital download (for just £19.99), exclusively from www.bigfinish.com. Classic Doctors New Monsters 4 is also available at the same price.
The four action-packed adventures in this box set are:
The House That Hoxx Built by Tim Foley
When the Third Doctor and Sarah journey far into the future of Earth, the last thing they expect to find on the planet is a haunted house!
Invited to dinner by the Hoxx of Balhoon and his ovine ward, the TARDIS travellers experience strange and disturbing phenomena, and the Doctor is determined to discover the cause…
The Tivolian Who Knew Too Much by Robert Valentine
Taking an Italian holiday, the Fourth Doctor and Leela encounter another tourist very far from home. Timble Feebis is a particularly timid Tivolian, but he has much to be fearful about!
Guarding a vital data-chip, the three visitors are soon caught up in the machinations of a crime boss and his gang, and a dangerous alien assassin…
Together In Eclectic Dreams by Roy Gill
The Sixth Doctor takes companion Mari to the Archipelago of High Dream to try and stop the nightmares she’s having in the TARDIS.
Instead, they find the Lethe Foundation, a research facility overseen by musician Tara, lulling her clients to sleep with soothing melodies. But the Kantrofarri are hunting, and a mystery Green Man holds the key to escape…
If I Should Die Before I Wake by John Dorney (from a story by Jacqueline Rayner)
The Eighth Doctor and Charley are lost – in a labyrinth of monsters. And somewhere, lurking, are the Dream Crabs…
From the Sphinx to Gorgons, Cerberus and Pegasus, the Greek myths are alive and threatening the TARDIS duo with death at every turn. How long until their Fates unravel, and the truth is revealed?
Script editor Matt Fitton said: “It’s always fun to delve into post-2005 Doctor Who to find more monsters to face our Classics — half the fun is working out which Doctor-monster pairings work the best to bring out the full potential of each Time Lord and their foes!”
Producer David Richardson added: “Great monsters don’t die —they always return. And sometimes they return before you first met them! What happened when the Third Doctor met one of the Balhoon? What adventures did the Fourth Doctor have with Tivolians? And could the Sixth and Eighth Doctors also have encountered the Dream Crabs?”

April 27th, 2022 - 5:35pmI like the sound of these stories. Really do. But the cover artwork is not doing much in the way of promoting these great productions! The artwork should set the scene. Silver and Ice, the artwork is great. But artwork for Sixth Dr Waterworlds and the Tenth Dr and Old Companions doesn’t do anything for me and is a put off. Shame, come on Big Finish, sort the artwork out for future releases please.

April 27th, 2022 - 5:58pmThey really are. I think the ones from Claudia Gironi are just the worst. Look like something that got dropped in a puddle of Water. Not a fan, and also puts me off buying the products. Big Finish needs to get artists like Iain Robertson or Anthony Lamb to make fantastic and beautiful new covers for the new stories.
Romana 3
April 27th, 2022 - 9:11pmYeah, I first noticed it mainly with Stranded, but it seems like most of their covers are just a selection of the main characters just standing there in a line… just far too basic, Where’s the creativity?

April 27th, 2022 - 11:14pmThere are a couple of rejected covers for this release posted by the artist onTwitter that are way better than these rather standard montages.
Not sure why they were rejected. Much more imaginative and the one with the Doctors on playing cards is really striking.

April 27th, 2022 - 4:21pmNo i m not getting drawn in to tim treloars take on the third doctor thankyou big finish. The lower down the pecking order choice of monsters are interesting but dont entice me enough to purchase. Ill settle with the first two volumes.

April 27th, 2022 - 5:20pmHmmm…I think I agree with you on this one Ergon. I don’t buy the audios with impersonated Doctors on them (no disrespect intended to those that do enjoy them), however I always buy releases that feature Tom so can’t help but think this is perhaps a slightly sneaky ploy!
The ergon
April 27th, 2022 - 5:59pmYes crafty ploy to big up those tbird doctor audios, i,m sure of it. I wont be drawn in. I,m not against this per se from a business perspective and i do enjoy David Bradleys turn as first doctor though i would have preferred them to have kept jon culshaw on overtime. His brigadier and third doctor impersonations are almost spot on but impersonaters arent to everyones taste.
The ergon
April 27th, 2022 - 6:21pmI did think if there were more of these they would just be sticking with 5,6,7 and 8. Keep everything else separate. If something isnt broke dont fix it.
The ergon
April 27th, 2022 - 6:23pmOops i omitted 4th.
Doug Who
April 27th, 2022 - 11:24pmHow could you omit the 4th! Outrageous!
I remember when Big Finish started it was one of their policies that they would never recast (or do ‘lost’ stories) and while I understand from a business point of view, and from a creative perspective wanting to cover the whole history of the show, I can’t get over the audio equivalent of uncanny valley or quite shake the feeling the original actors are not ‘replaceable’.
Did get the ‘Return of the Cybermen’ release (which does both of the above!) and while Sadie Miller does a really good job of playing Sarah, it is still a bit strange and you’re constantly comparing. Harry however sadly has none of Ian Marter’s charisma. Although interesting, some of these simply emphasise why they were rejected or rewritten.

April 28th, 2022 - 10:08am“crafty ploy to big up those tbird doctor audios”
Nonsense – he has 10 boxsets, in the legacy of time and already met river song so i think its safe to say that range and interpretation of the doctor is secured.
At the big finish day last week there were long lines and nothing but love/admiration for the “new unit team” so i think the minority of people who take this stance of “recast- no listen” are just disappointing themselves.
I love how people criticise vocals, no one ever mentions that peter davison hasnt sounded ANYTHING like his voice in 1980 and occasional story notes of “is my voice and hair different Tegan” arent an excuse.
If you want to be purest and only listen to the “real” actors thats fine, in 5-10 years im sorry to say you will have little options….
Sadie miller, jon culshaw, daisy ashford, tim trelor, stephen noonan, frazer hines and Micheal troughton are greats and long may their tenures continue!!!
the Ergon
April 28th, 2022 - 10:38amYes Doug that preliminary script didn,t quite cut the mustard and understandable why it was pushed to the paper basket in favour of the televised version.
Christopher Naylor didn,t quite ‘Nail’ Harrys foibles or come close to Ian Marters tv character and as for Sarah Jane, Sadie was fine but lacked that inimatable tone of voice and forceful character that made her mother so beloved, but i,m happy she stepped up to the mark in honour of her.
It will be interesting to hear what the original drafts for The Ark and Daleks! Genesis of Terror sound like when they get their release in 2023.

April 28th, 2022 - 2:28pmWell you are indeed entitled to your opinion ELF2A . I have nothing but respect for the actors who replace the original ‘Doctors’ or even companions but I choose who or what I want to listen to. So what if Peter Davison sounds more Gravelly than he did back in the day or whether Tom bakers rendition varies occasionally from that of his younger self, it doesn,t spoil my enjoyment.
I,m sure Tim Treloars a very fine actor but myself i would much rather they use a good impersonator like Culshaw or even Fraser Hines to keep the Pertwee/ Troughton memories alive. Culshaw is particularly good.
As for ‘Crafty ploys’, I understand it from a business perspective but it wouldn,t be the first time Big Finish have alluded to new characters etc or had them cross over when the casual buyer wouldn,t want to necessarily follow that characters narrative. Not everything has to be ‘Contained’ in this world. I refuse to be pushed into something that means investing more time and money. And not everyone can afford to keep up with everything Big finish release. Some of us like to make up our own mind up.

April 27th, 2022 - 3:41pmThey were dreadful in the TV episodes, one to miss I feel.

April 27th, 2022 - 3:16pmNice to see that we have stories that involve the “new monster’s” rather then making them the focus. Yes they are very low down to totem pole if we list all new monster’s but actually this is nice to involve creatures overlooked or not given the right time to breath out. No doubt some will complain that these are “z list” creatures but lets see what we get from them!
Great to see 3 & Sarah in more stories and 8 & Charlie are always welcome (also nice to see a slightly new look for the 8th doctor during his “pollard days”, and who is this new companion with 6?…….time will tell, it always does.
