BBC sells Doctor Who Music rights to BMG

From www.theguardian.com

The BBC has sold the rights to theme tunes and music from hit shows including Idris Elba’s Luther, Doctor Who and Wolf Hall.

BMG, the music company with artists including David Bowie, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger and Iron Maiden, has snapped up the potentially highly lucrative rights to more than 1,000 copyrights to theme tunes, background music and music cues in BBC shows.

I sent an email to Silva Screen. Here is their response:

    Thanks for your email.

We don’t have a release date because these titles are not available to license from the BBC at the moment. When/if they become available, then we will be able to schedule them in.

I think we need to keep up the pressure to get it

I think that’s the simple answer but there will be more to it than that

Why would they release a soundtrack at all when these days everyone just illegally distributes music on-line. Where is the money in it for them?

And more to the point, I think DW fans just want cleaned up version of the music, digitally or physically.

Anyone know where to contact the BBC about the soundtrack? This is getting ridiculous that it’s not out yet. Nearly been 2 years!

I expect the soundtrack will be released around the time season 10 begins. I seem to recall this is what happened a year or so ago with the combined Day of the Doctor/Night of the Doctor soundtracks.

They Could just Keep the rights and do nothing
Release a Doctor who theme and just do nothing for five years
(Mainly I was thinking what happened with marvel)

No, unlikely – BMG would get the rights (usually for a set period of time) to commercially exploit the musical assets – sub licences to use in other contexts etc etc – but they wouldn’t have any more say in who the BBC Drama department choose to create the music, any more than 2Entertain (who are in fact an arm of BBC Worldwide) have any say in who gets cast to play the Doctor. Also, publishing companies are not the same as record companies – many artists change publisher without leaving their label – so this might not affect Silva Screen’s position either.

This is interesting, and I’m not entirely sure how this is will work with regards to Doctor Who and other BBC soundtracks. In the article it mentions that BGM now own the rights to the music from programmes like Frozen Planet and Wolf Hall, however Silva Screen have released soundtracks for both these programmes, as well as Doctor Who. Luther has also had a soundtrack released from another company. So I’m not sure how this will work.

Will BMG enable other companies, e.g. Silva Screen, to release soundtracks under license and take some of the royalties? Or will they now release all future BBC soundtracks? From the article it suggests they’ve brought the rights to the last 5 years worth of music, but much of that has already been released. It will be very interesting to see how this works. I really hope this doesn’t effect BBC soundtracks too badly though as Silva Screen, and others, were excellent at what they did, and I think we’d all want a good quality Series 9 soundtrack sooner rather than later.

Booboo do you think there will be a series nine Soundtrack
(Honestly I’d rather they got the rights to Sarah Jane Adventures Music so they could make a soundtrack out of it- I know it will never happen but I live in hope!)

yes I still think there will be one, it seems BMG have the rights to use the music for other things (with BBC approval) like commercials etc, any future soundtracks may still be released by silvascren, we just dont know

What does this mean for future soundtracks? Will licensing rights just have to be sought from BMG instead?

Future soundtracks will still be with the BBC as and when they are composed, this affects music from the past five years (not the theme tune I would point out, that’s other shows).
