Interesting… I note that Andrew McCulloch’s name has been corrected on the Meglos disc for the standard packaging version of S18.

Does anyone know if there are any other faults corrected in the standard edition versions that made it onto the limited edition sets?

When can we expect the next standard Blu-ray re-releases to be revealed.

I read a comment somewhere that hmv have said the next 2 aren’t due till the end of September. Seeing as evil is out then I can see it moving to October. Maybe revealed in august then

They probably want to keep a gap to make the initial boxes remain most desirable. That, and there are queues for the pressing plants and the like.

I agree. Might end up being 4 a year so that
the standard sets don’t catch up to the limited releases so soon.

I think they will space them out but the next two seasons 23 and 26 would make six this year. Since these are already on sale i cant see it making that much difference if people are wanting these as standard but alternate DVD/Bluray could slow these releases down. There is only 8, 14 and 24 to go. Unless they decide to release these as single to allow the limited Editions to keep in front.

Do think these sets are a great idea.

Yes, 100% a good idea as it gives more doctor who fans the chance to experience these box sets and the newly made special features and tons of behind the scenes stuff

And more profit means more incentive to continue and keep putting money into the releases. So many lines end up cutting back as revenue falls.

I bought the season 12 when it first came out but have not got any more since because on all the TVs and Blu Ray players I tried playing it on, even with changing the play settings. I could not get it to play in full screen, it had two black bars down each side of the screen. does anyone know how to play it so the picture fills the screen? thanks

That is full screen for something made in the 1970s. Your Blu Ray player is auto-adjusting the TV screen to match the aspect ratio of the original episodes. Most TVs today are widescreen but in the 1970s they were square and so the episodes were made with a square picture. You should be able to adjust the aspect ratio to widescreen by changing the settings on the TV. There will be a button on the remote, probably a square with arrows inside it, but that will give a distorted picture with everything stretched wider than it should be.

I had the same problem. Then I discovered a button on my tv remote that can change the screen aspect. On my remote it is a button with a tv symbol with a cross with arrows, like compass points. Hope this helps.

This was how they were originally transmitted in 4.3 ratio, they are not meant to be squashed out to widescreen.

It’s a personal preference. I don’t mind the black bars, I just ignore them, and prefer to watch it in the correct ratio. If you find the bars more distracting that a stretched image, that’s up to you.

      May 30th, 2021 - 8:17pm

Trouble is when stretching a 4.3 picture it loses resolution the more you zoom in, and stretching it sideways makes everyone look 40 stone!

Play them on a PlayStation or Xbox usually does the trick.

Got to say that with the Ltd Edition ones being between £1 and £7 more expensive than the standard price (as long as you get your pre-orders in when they are announced) they are hardly extortionate.

I think the person meant ebay prices

    • Dalekz

      May 29th, 2021 - 2:19pm

Not everybody can afford to pre order every single boxset as the are announced.
Sometimes you want to pick them up when you want to buy them even if it’s months later which you can’t do with the limited edition versions as they sell out quickly only to end up on eBay for more.
The Limited Editions may not cost much more but the Limited nature of them makes them harder to buy on a budget.

    • Philip Shaw

      May 29th, 2021 - 2:42pm

I tend to order the Limited editions on Amazon, which are months in advance, then buy gift cards and knock it off the price. When they come out it is paid for.

      May 30th, 2021 - 5:26am

£45 in 1 go can seem a lot however it is the equivalent of £3.75 a week for 12 weeks (about the same price as a coffee or 1 pint a week if you are drinking out). Just cut out 1 small thing a week and it can be easily affordable

    • Philip Shaw

      May 30th, 2021 - 9:13am

Amazon doesn’t charge until dispatch, unlike some other sites when you pay by PayPal and your charged immediately. I do this sometimes knowing I’ll be skint the month it comes out.

    May 28th, 2021 - 10:48am

Normal editions are great, I want the episodes in HD Blu-Ray quality in a box that protects them and looks nice for a price that is reasonable.
I do not need extra cardboard and paper to make it more special, if you like that sort of thing that’s great keep buying the other versions everybody lives! I mean Wins!

No, because a) no one’s holding a gun to your head, and b) if you have the limited set there’s no incentive to buy the standard one.

    • Scott Carrick

      May 27th, 2021 - 6:42pm

But is there any incentive to buy any more of the Limited Edition Sets now if you know they are going to be released fairly rapidly thereafter in better (albeit not as elegant ) packaging and exactly the same Disc Contents? Feel that the Standard Editions shouldn’t include the Extra Disc to make the Limited Editions more special. Sorry, just my personal whinge apologies if I offend anyone 🙂

Core collectors will “want it now” and will not be interested in waiting a several months for something that’s “standard” and few pounds cheaper.

The originals were only ever advertised as Ltd edition packaging, not content. If you want to wait a few months and save a few £1’s that’s up to you.

Months afterward, people are unable to buy the limited edition versions unless they’re filthy rich. So taking the bonus disc away from these standard editions wouldn’t be fair on those people who missed out.

Not everyone wants the basic packaging. I might be in the minority I personally prefer the limited edition packaged box sets plus as I’ve purchased all 8 previous sets and have season 24 on order there is an incentive for me to carry on buying the limited edition versions. Not all seasons will include a bonus disc. Season 18 had k9 and company as it’s last disc season 23 had extended versions of 9-14 of trial and season 24 has the extended version of dragonfire on it. If they excluded those there would be a riot by fans

The Ltd Ed packaging to me is so much better. Bigger artwork. Full booklet rather than just half of it. Internal Tardis artwork too.

Looking forward to seeing side by side comparisons of ltd and standard soon. I’m sure someone on YouTube who gets review copies for free from BBC will do it.

I think the internal artwork with the TARDIS and the Doctor’s face from the limited edition packaging will most likely be transferred to the standard ones too – probably on the other side of the sleeve behind the discs

Personally I’m willing to pay $15 more (Australia) just for the SUPER extensive behind the scenes info in the booklet. It fascinates me to no end and I’m happy to be paying extra for it.

I stand corrected – the inside of the cases just have an image of the 3D console room. Still nice though.

Very happy with the standard packaging. The outer cardboard is fairly sturdy too surprisingly. Will definitely be sticking with these re-releases. Was never that keen on the bulky limited edition releases because you could only really obtain one by pre-order. But these re-releases, whilst being somewhat slimmer in packaging, don’t need to be pre-ordered as they are always available, so any disappointment is avoided.

    Thought we’d get a Series 9 Steelbook announcement before these 2 re-release.

    Guessing August for that then.

I have actually been wondering about that, all Doctor Who Series from Series 9 Onwards had A Steelbook release like the re-releases of S1-8 and the 2009-10 and 50th Anniversary Specials Sets, and with one small exception being 2017’s XMas Special all specials are included in the steelbooks… So maybe they arent in a rush to do 9 and 10 just yet

You could say that series 5 has had 2 steelbook releases which is true but the original (Crack in Time on a silver background) was quite thick and took up alot of room.
