About the Coin:
Doctor Who is currently the longest running and most successful science fiction television series of all time. Produced in Great Britain by the BBC, the programme depicts the adventures of a time traveling, humanoid alien known as the Doctor. He explores the universe in his TARDIS, a telepathic travel machine that’s bigger on the inside than the outside, and outwardly appears to be a blue 1960s British police box. Along with a succession of companions, the Doctor faces a variety of foes while working to save civilizations, help those he comes in contact with, and right wrongs across the universe.

Doctor Who first aired in 1963, and to date the title role has been played by eleven different actors. The program has received recognition from critics and the public as being one of the finest British television series ever produced and is aired around the globe.

Silver to Celebrate Doctor Who’s Golden Anniversary

BBC Worldwide and New Zealand Mint Launch Commemorative 50th Anniversary Coins for Iconic TV Series Doctor Who

In an exciting collaboration through time and relative dimension in space, BBC Worldwide Australasia and New Zealand Mint are offering a legal tender coin, and a series of collectible coins as a celebration of Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary.

To celebrate the world’s longest running sci-fi series, New Zealand Mint will launch a one-ounce silver .999 coin which features an engraved picture of the iconic TARDIS, as well as a unique 50th Anniversary logo. The coin comes packaged in a 3D model replica of the TARDIS, which opens with the iconic TARDIS “vwarp vwarp” sound. The coins themselves are legal tender for $2 in the South Pacific Island nation Niue, making them a must-have item for fans to collect.

Later in the year New Zealand Mint will also release collectible coins featuring all 11 Doctors, from the first Doctor played by William Hartnell, to the current incarnation – Matt Smith. Further Doctor Who coin releases are also planned for 2014 and 2015.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with New Zealand Mint on this global deal. It is an historic year for the Doctor Who brand, and we are pleased to be able to bring this unique product to Doctor Who fans and coin collectors alike,” said Rachael Hammond, BBC Worldwide’s Senior Licensing Executive, Consumer Products.

Said Simon Harding, NZ Mint Chief Executive: “I grew up watching Doctor Who as a child in New Zealand which, coincidentally, was the first country outside the UK to screen the show. It’s a great honour to now be asked to produce these coins to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Fans are going to really like what we’ve come up with.”

I’m quite tempted to get this, but I would much prefer one from the Royal Mint. Do we think that’s likely?

There will not be a Royal Mint product. The New Zealand Mint has exclusive worldwide rights to the license. The fact this is a NZ minted coin makes no difference whatsoever to it’s value. Quite the opposite in fact.

Keep an eye on AgAuNEWS.com over the next few days for some great news.

Got mine from The Westminster Collection a few weeks ago. I had to pay £150 so that I could pay in £30 installments over five months but it’s definitely worth it as an expensive collectors piece. 😀

Mine didn’t work from the minute I opened it. After doing some research it seems that the sensors which make the noise are activated by light; from personal experience you need quite a significant amount of light in the room for it to work. If all else fails, hold it under a lamp or put your fingers on the sensors for 30 seconds then take them off; you should find the noise starts to play.

What if you could get Peter Davidson to sign this, should/would you do it? How cool would that be?

Scratch that last comment. It turns out it needs a sufficient light source to operate, which I did not have. *blushes*

Dam why cant the UK get this. I know we can still order it from New Zealand but why cant we have something similar here in the UK? I would have thought in the 50th all these companies would have been out of there socks straight away to get a piece of the action. To be honest i don’t think a couple of conventions and proms are not really enough. And the fact we only have 10 episodes this year.

I ordered this when it was first available earlier this year, in total (including postage) it came to about £120, yes might seem expensive to some but worth it to me with it being part of the 50th anniversary merchandise

new Zealand Mint was commissioned to make them as NZ was the first country outside UK to screen Doctor Who. There are only 10,000 being made. They might sell out fast and they might not make anymore. I just bought one for my son for his Xmas present. I live in Christchurch new Zealand. The total came to $167 NZ dollars incl shipping.
