Doctor Who Magazine issue 435

Doctor Who Magazine issue 435

As Doctor Who reaches its mid-season climax, DWM talks exclusively to actress ALEX KINGSTON about keeping the incredible secret of the true identity of her back-to-front alter-ego, River Song…

“Right up until the reveal, people are enjoying trying to guess.

Is she really on the Doctor’s side? Or is there something more to her? Is she actually not such a good person? Even once we know who River is, I don’t think we’ve lost her potential for adventure.”

ALSO THIS ISSUE:

AND BABY MAKES FOUR!
DWM takes a peek at what we can expect from STEVEN MOFFAT’s game-changing episode, A Good Man Goes to War. Where is Amy? Who is the Eye Patch Lady? What is River’s secret? All will be revealed… or will it…?

HAVE YOU MET MY WIFE?
SURANNE JONES talks exclusively to DWM about what it was like to play Idris – the TARDIS given physical form, in the amazing episode, THE DOCTOR’S WIFE, written by the award-winning NEIL GAIMAN.

GOODBYE SARAH JANE…
Following the sad news of the death of ELISABETH SLADEN, DWM commemorates the much-loved actress and the character of Sarah Jane Smith that she created. Doctor Who’s commander-in-chief, STEVEN MOFFAT reflects on the enduring popularity of the character in his latest PRODUCTION NOTES; and former Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer of The Sarah Jane Adventures, RUSSELL T DAVIES shares his fond memories of working with Elisabeth. Plus, an obituary and a selection of the many letters received from readers.

SEEING DOUBLE!
DWM braved the biting cold to report on the disturbing two-part adventure, THE REBEL FLESH/THE ALMOST PEOPLE and was able to talk exclusively to the cast and crew, including author MATTHEW GRAHAM, actor RAQUEL CASSIDY, and director JULIAN SIMPSON.

GENTELMEN ADVENTURERS…
From 1977’s The Talons of Weng-Chiang to their own series of adventures on audio, actors CHRISTOPHER BENJAMIN and TREVOR BAXTER talk exclusively to DWM about playing Victorian detectives Jago and Litefoot.

END OF AN ERA
As the 60s draw to a close, so too does the tenure of the Second Doctor as COUNTDOWN TO 50 reaches Series Six which introduced both UNIT and the Time Lords to Doctor Who mythology.

RUNNING OUT OF TIME!
Amy and the Doctor confront nuns with guns when they land inside an abandoned alien vessel where time is the enemy in APOTHEOSIS, the first part of a new comic strip adventure by Jonathan Morris with art by Dan McDaid.

RETURN OF AN OLD ACQUAINTANCE…
THE TIME TEAM take a trip to the subterranean layer of tycoon and extraterrestrial collector, Henry van Statten to see the Doctor confronting an old enemy. Will DALEK be to their taste?

GONE TO PIECES…
Summoned by the White Guardian, the Doctor is charged with the mission of finding the six segments of the Key to Time and the Time Lady Romana is assigned to help him in his task. FACT OF FICTION examines THE RIBOS OPERATION from 1978, and tracks down some fascinating facts about the adventure.

OF GODS AND MEN…
Should the Doctor be an all-powerful, god-like being or just a clever chap with an inquisitive streak? TOBY HADOKE and JOHNNY CANDON take sides and fight their respective corners in A BATTLE OF WITS…

PLUS! All the latest official news, previews, reviews, competitions, more madness from the Watcher, another prize-winning crossword, and much, much more!

According to the Editor’s “letter” they delayed it so that they didn’t arrive “overly early” and spoil the cliffhanger.

Bought this in WhSmith. Just read Letter from the Editor so far but like always I will read the whole lot. I’ve got lots of time to read it because after all it’s still the school holidays. 🙂

      May 31st, 2011 - 1:50pm

Issue 436 will be a Nicholas Courtney Tribute issue so I think that is why there is a Price increase.

    • who crazy!

      May 31st, 2011 - 3:04pm

Really! Wow! Nicholas Courtney tribute! They haven’t done an Elisabeth Sladen tribute in this mag yet. 🙁 Still time is still going so they will probably do an Elisabeth Sladen tribute soon. Hopefully…

They have said they are doing one in a later issue, these magazines have to be planned weeks/months in advance

    • James of Gallifrey

      June 3rd, 2011 - 2:28pm

also, the price increase is because 436 is 100 pages long due to the tribute as stated on the final page of issue 435

I’ll probably get this on Wednesday (1st June 2011). Maybe If I’m Lucky, also this week I may get the DVDs that I’ve Ordered (Earthshock (Peter Davison) and Robot (Tom Baker)). I’ve also pre-ordered Series 6 Part 1. I know alot of people are waiting for the complete boxset… but seriously…. I CANNOT WAIT FOR SATURDAY. Stupid Britains Got Talent goes over Doctor Who. My Family want to watch BGT… What the Hell do I do. We have not got 2 TVs and Broadband sucks in my area… so that rules out Tut Internet. Argh. Stupid BGT. 1hr earlier…

No River is not the Eye Patch Lady, nor is the Eye Patch Lady River; google the Actress Frances Barber who plays the character and you’ll find on http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0053384/filmoseries#tt0436992 that she is credited as Madame Kovarian

Mr Master, I saw the symbols too and all I can say is; it’s the Greek symbol for… Omega… Is that who I think it is running, wearing a particular overcoat of a particular length (one of two guesses or I’m completely wrong)? The Duplicate Doctor or Jack Harkness (Recognise the intergalactic bar the Maldovarium? River purchases a vortex manipulator, off the wrist of a certain Time Agent, from Dorium) It could be the latter, or my imagination the image was somewhat unclear when I pressed pause…

That logo was also on The Clerics jumpsuit in Time Of Angels/Flesh And Stone, so hopefully it is him, and its been planned for so long 😀

    • Androvax

      May 29th, 2011 - 8:56am

I’m pretty sure that the symbol is of The Clerics from The Time Of Angels/ Flesh And Stone as it was on their shoulder.

    • Mr Master

      May 29th, 2011 - 10:26am

Omega symbol with the Roman numerals for two inside. I bet that River is Amy’s child, omega and his army wish to imprison her, she is the child in the spacesuit who kills the Doctor and River regenerates. How?

    • Anonymous

      May 29th, 2011 - 7:07pm

Amy joked about there possibly being “side efects” from TARDIS travel, it could become significant (possibly regeneration for her child?).

    • Androvax

      May 30th, 2011 - 9:33am

The official synopsis for both the episode and confidential confirms that there is an army of Clerics in the story lead by Colonel Manton

    • whofan4ever

      May 30th, 2011 - 6:29pm

i know that it means two but it means omega 2nd generation

i know he was in it twice before but he was the same then
