Doctor Who Fury from the Deep Steelbook

Available to order in the UK from www.amazon.co.uk or www.zoom.co.uk

Available to order in Australia from www.sanity.com.au

BBC Studios can reveal artwork and extras for Doctor Who: Fury From The Deep starring Patrick Troughton as The Doctor. The new animated release will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and Steelbook from 14th September 2020. Pre-orders are available now from Amazon, HMV and Zoom.

Following the success of existing animations The Power of the Daleks, The Faceless Ones, Shada and The Macra Terror, Fury From The Deep fills another gap in missing Doctor Who content lost in the purge of the BBC’s archive in 1975.

The three-disc release gives fans the opportunity to enjoy Fury From The Deep in high definition, either in full colour or in black & white. The release will include the surviving clips from the original 1968 production as well.

Fury From The Deep is told across six episodes and stars Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling. The storyline concerns a colony of sentient, parasitic seaweed, last seen in the eighteenth century, returning to attack a number of gas instillations in the North Sea in an attempt to take over humanity.

Animated episodes from Big Finish Creative Limited in association with Digitoonz Media & Entertainment and Thaumaturgy are joined by a wealth of exciting extras.

A making-of featurette ‘The Cruel Sea – Surviving Fury From The Deep’ sees original cast members Frazer Hines, June Murphy and Brian Cullingford revisit filming locations with production assistant Michael Briant, assistant floor manager Margot Hayhoe and helicopter pilot Mike Smith. Other contributors to this segment include writer Victor Pemberton and actress Deborah Watling. There’s also an archive audio interview with director Hugh David.

Additional material includes:

  • Audio commentaries
  • The Cruel Sea – Surviving Fury From The Deep
  • Original surviving footage
  • Behind The Scenes 8mm footage
  • Animating Fury From The Deep
  • Archive interviews with Peter Day and Victor Pemberton
  • Teaser Trailer
  • Photo Gallery
  • The Slide Audio Drama
  • PDF scripts

Let’s this hope this is true. If so it would mean only three Troughton stories are left to released on DVD. Not only that but it would mean that seasons one, two, five and six would be one story short of been complete. Let’s hope also that the rumours about Phil Morris and the seven missing episodes are true too , although you take these rumours with a pinch of salt.

The mirror do have some form for revealing the animations. They were the ones to break the macra and wheel animations months before it was actually revealed even if they did wrongly assume it was going to be the full thing of wheel. Radio times has just pretty much confirmed it via article by stating: RadioTimes.com understands more details about the animated versions of The Evil of the Daleks and The Abominable Snowmen will be released in due course

I’m sure the bbc will reveal things in due course

Out of all the missing stories and being one of 4 originally released on cassette it’s one of my most listened to audio soundtracks before being replaced on cd so just Evil now to complete the 4.

Excellent news re the animators (ex planet 55) IMO Tenth Planet and The Moonbase are fantastic animations so im really looking forward to this. Steelbook pre order has been bagged since announcement day. Feels like a lifetime ago now though

    • Anonymous

      August 5th, 2020 - 12:15pm

I loved the moonbase animation, was quite happy with reign but I’m not keen on tenth planet. There’s something odd about the mouths of the characters when they speak. It’s still good and better than no moving images at all but it’s one of the weaker ones for me.

    • Philip Shaw

      August 7th, 2020 - 1:46pm

I found that both of Reign of Terror’s wete so different in style to be distracting. The first episode tried to be too different with strange camera angles and too much character motion, seemed very anime. The latter episode had settled down and was more in keeping of a slower Hartnell period episode.

    • Anonymous

      August 7th, 2020 - 5:36pm

I like all of those stories, but the animation just wasn’t for me. I prefer the company who did TMT & TFO

    • Anonymous

      August 8th, 2020 - 8:42pm

To be honest I’ll settle for animation I’m not keen on in order to increase the releases. Reign tries to be modern in its cutting but its distracting after you have watched 3 full episodes of the original. But I’d rather have the animation than not.

    • Gordon

      August 8th, 2020 - 10:45pm

Think reign had a problematic production. They tried new ways of animation that didn’t work and had to bin some of it and eventually ran out of time on it. I think the animation itself was fine it was the constant cutting that was problematic. Think if it was recut it probably would work better. They did get better With 10th planet and again with moonbase. I’ll be surprised if it got a special edition of it though. The original reign release did very poorly according Steve Roberts a few years back plus there isn’t telesnaps of episodes 4 and 5 to do a proper recon of those episodes plus I think you would struggle to think of new extras to tempt rebuyers as it is pretty much got all the usual features (making of/commentary/production notes for the surviving episodes).

    • Anonymous

      August 9th, 2020 - 9:57pm

I’m happy enough with reign Gordon, yes the cutting is distracting as I say but the actual animation is fine. No point in doing a new version really. Does make you wonder if they’ll try any historical stories as full animation. I’d love the smugglers and Highlanders but would they be commercially viable I wonder?

skaroman, I think it means the teaser trailer for this, i.e. Fury (that was unveiled at ComicCon London last October, and then used by BBC on social media to promote the upcoming release). I don’t think they mean ‘the first reveal of what the next animation will be’ but I’ll be happy to be wrong!

So, if no historical stories are to be animated, then that likely leaves only 9 more potential animations of missing/incomplete stories. The contenders for potential future animation would be ‘Galaxy 4’ , ‘The Daleks Masterplan’ , ‘The Celestial Toymaker’ and ‘The Savages’ for Hartnell. Plus ‘The Underwater Menace’ , ‘The Evil of the Daleks’ , ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ , ‘The Wheel in Space’ and ‘The Space Pirates’ for Troughton.

Oh yeah, I did forget ‘The Web of Fear’. But as only episode 3 is missing. I think I’d rather just have a photographic reconstruction of the episode. Or hope someone sees sense and hands it back.

    • Anonymous

      November 3rd, 2019 - 1:59pm

I wish a lower budget team could just animate the 3 episodes total of the underwater menace and web of fear, I doubt they’d animate all the episodes of underwater menace and even more sure they wouldn’t do Web. If they do all the other troughtons except the Highlanders when it’s the introductory story of a popular companion, I’d be shocked. Hopefully they could do the Highlanders and the smugglers just to complete a season that’s within the realms of possibly completing

    • Anonymous

      November 3rd, 2019 - 2:06pm

I’d imagine each team would in order and share assets when they need to, so 2020 will see faceless ones and fury, 2021 will see evil and wheel, 2022 could be snowmen and space pirates, and possibly 2023 smugglers and Highlanders for a completed season 4, they could then do the easier hartnell animations such as galaxy 4 and savages in 2025…

    • Anonymous

      November 3rd, 2019 - 2:07pm

      2024*

    • Gordon

      November 3rd, 2019 - 11:30pm

I wouldn’t rule out historicals completely. They are going to run out of monster and sci-fi based stories in the next 4-5 years. I’d be surprised if they didn’t want to at least try one of the easier historical stories at some point as a test case. Highlanders would be tricky as it’s full of tartan all of which would need to be hand drawn and would make it expensive. Myth makers doesn’t have telesnaps for reference and crusade and Marco Polo would be too expensive. Smugglers would be a good way to test as it wouldn’t be too expensive and has telesnaps.

The problem with doing either web 3 or
the underwater menace is you would be focusing on stories that have already had dvd releases. Doing a story that has never had a stand alone release has way more sales potential than a story that has already had a dvd release. I’m sure they will get tackled eventually but I doubt they are in a rush to fill these gaps at this precise moment when they are far more bigger and appetising gaps that are still possible on the current budget.

I do think it’s possible that they may do web 3 when they do abominable as abominable is pretty much the easiest Troughton to do in terms of cast sets and costumes and it might be possible that they will be able to do both at the same time. As for underwater menace i think it will be fully animated. Listening to the convention panel and part of the reason they fully animated and in colour the faceless ones it’s more accessible to larger audiences so I think if it’s animated it will be fully animated

    • DPHill

      August 4th, 2020 - 12:51pm

I have a feeling that maybe if they got closer to getting web 3 then they would do a special edition release with that and full special features and perhaps an abominable snowmen with it.
If they don’t find it, I hope they do a small box set of abominable snowmen and web of fear special edition as I’m not sure everyone would pay for just one animated episode and doing a box set of the two yeti stories seems more fitting.
Does anyone reckon that there will be anymore dvd box sets? I think it seems unlikely but the yeti tales and master plan seem the likeliest contenders – also, a better underwater menace release alongside highlanders could work…

You are correct. This must be in the top five of the greatest Patrick troughton stories of all time. I remember watching these adventures when they were first broadcast. The best one of troughton’s era ( in my opinion ) has to be ” evil of the Daleks .” An adventure fought across three time periods which ends in the destruction of the Daleks on their home planet. I specifically remember the special effects which were astonishing for a 60’s to show at the time. The climactic battle at the end is just etched into my memory and I have never forgotten it. So I am hoping that either they actually discover this lost adventure and bring it back to the BBC which would be preferable or as the last resort produce an animation but to a high standard! We will have to wait and see.
