Three New Doctor Who sets at B&M Stores

The Character Options team is delighted to finally reveal details of the final Doctor Who Collector Sets for B&M Stores, for 2023. Available later this month (date to be determined by the retailer), these three new sets will add to those revealed in August and will be the perfect addition to any fan’s collection.

The first of the new arrivals is a three-figure set that goes back to 1976 with three 5.5” scale characters presented in updated 4th Doctor Branded packaging. And to keep up with demand from fans of the Daleks, there are two new History Sets to look forward to, too. Each pack features a comprehensive description, together with details on the inspiration behind each set, a short precis of which is below.

The Deadly Assassin (08019)

This figure trio features the Fourth Doctor in Time Lord robes, collar and skull cap, Chancellor Goth in his Prydonian Chancellery robes and the Claret robed Cardinal Borusa, all iconic characters from the third serial of Season 14.

This was the only story in the Classic series of Doctor Who to feature the Doctor without a companion and saw the return of the Doctor’s nemesis, the Master, but in a heavily decayed state at the end of his original regeneration cycle. The storyline sees the Doctor head to Gallifrey to answer to the Time Lords’ summons.

On the way, he is struck by a premonition that he will assassinate the Lord President – a premonition that plays out! The Doctor is quickly apprehended but by claiming a right to stand for President he sends Gallifrey into a constitutional crisis. The full synopsis behind the episode and creation of the set can be enjoyed on the packaging.

The History of the Daleks #15 – Remembrance of the Daleks (08020)

This next installment for the History of the Daleks series includes a supreme Dalek and a Grey Renegade Dalek, from an episode that first aired in 1988.

For Remembrance of the Daleks, the producer and writing team sought to give the Daleks more credibility and menace. The story reveals two factions of Daleks fighting a civil war: the Grey Daleks, or ‘renegades’ led by the black Supreme Dalek and the Imperial Dalek force led by The Emperor ‘Davros’. Humanity is caught in the crossfire as both sides hunt their objective, an ancient Gallifreyan Artifact known as the ‘Hand of Omega’ through London.

The History of the Daleks #16/17 – New Series Gold and Black Daleks (08021)

Featuring one Time War survivor Dalek and one Black Dalek, these Daleks herald back to the start of the New Series in 2005. During 2004 the props department were challenged with coming up with a new Dalek design for the series. The feeling of those involved was that the Dalek needed updating to a more modern look.

In the story ‘Dalek’ one surviving Dalek is kept in an underground bunker, the pet plaything of a multi billionaire who collects alien junk. When it finally regenerates, we find out exactly how deadly one lone Dalek can be.

Black Dalek Sec is one of a set of four Daleks to emerge from a Dimension Ship on Earth in the Torchwood research facility. These survivors of the Time War have hidden in the spaces between dimensions awaiting the moment to emerge once more. Upon their arrival, all hell breaks loose as the Daleks and Cybermen rally for an all-out war.

Al Dewar, Creative Director at Character Options, said: “This time, we’ve jumped around a little. We’ve delved back into the Classic series to bring the collectors Time Lords, and not just any Time Lords .. these are the Time Lords of old, when they were still a mystery to fans in their second TV appearance. It was a delight to bring the 4th Doctor in his Time Lord robes, the beguiling Chancellor Goth as played by Bernard Horsefall, a true Doctor Who legend, and the Doctor’s old schoolmaster Cardinal Borusa, from the eternally fabulous Deadly Assassin story to the shelves.

“Then we skipped over the Resurrection of the Daleks, though we will inevitably cover that one, and went straight to Remembrance to bring fans the iconic Black Dalek Supreme and Grey drone. These have a many updated features and stand out well. You just can’t beat a Remembrance Grey Dalek blasting its way around London! These flat grey ‘chunky’ Classic Daleks were so impressive in their last TV outing.

“For Set two we delved into the New Series with the ‘original’ Bronze Dalek from ‘Dalek’, interestingly the only one to feature, the waistband in gold. The colour scheme on this Dalek is slightly different than the later ones with less contrast between the gold and bronze. Adding to the mix is Dalek Sec -the original though not last, Black Dalek Supreme. The impact of the first Black Dalek for decades was so impressive at the time and just added to the feeling of menace that the new design conveyed.

“As usual, hopefully there’s something here for everyone to enjoy and, as Leela might say, ‘Good luck to you all in the eternal B&M Set hunt!’”

These new sets will be available in the coming weeks at local B&M Stores. The retail price will be determined by the store.

This is just pure speculation, but I would hope CO/B&M would do mixed batches of Classic Series and New Who History Of The Daleks sets. In the past, they released them in batches of 2 sets at a time. And with this new wave, they’re releasing Remembrance and New Who sets. Since CO/B&M seems intent on revisiting Classic Series History Of The Daleks sets like Resurrection, they could go backwards and forwards at the same time. Release a Classic Series set and a New Who set. There are some gaps in the past History sets. Like the Suicide Dalek from Destiny, the Supreme from Resurrection as well, and the Special Weapons and Imperial Dalek from Remembrance. If CO/B&M wanted to invest in some new tooling, they could do the attachment variants seen in Power and The Chase. And there are the weaponless Daleks seen in Power and Genesis that could get releases.

Definitely hoping the new sets signal a move into nu-Who Daleks, I’d love a Paradigm Dalek

I’m sure Al Dewar has said that the Baker era was the Who he loved as a kid and grew up with, and he has singled out The Deadly Assassin as one of his favourites.

Now if they could do an exclusive set of a frilly shirt Baker and a Chancellery Guard, they could get mileage of that same sculpt for future B&M sets of Invasion of Time, Arc of Infinity and Five Doctors. And even some specific guards such as Andred or Maxil.

With some retconning they might also be able to get a Gallifreyan soldier from the New Series.

Agree 100%. This ‘Deadly Assassin’ set is a disappointment. There are figure sculpts available (Yana Master, Traken 4th Doctor) that easily go together to make a white shirt 4th Doctor. It’s also disappointing that the purple Timelord is listed as Borusa, but is simply a repaint of the Nu Who Timelord figure, hence the face looks nothing like Borusa. We’ve seen from the Fourth Doctor companion set a few years ago that CO can do 3 new head sculpts and use existing figure bodies. I can therefore only assume the budget is even tighter than 2 or 3 yrs ago and they could only afford one new head sculpt (Goth).

I’m not disappointed in this set. I get that these B&M sets are about CO recycling existing assets with the lowest budget tweaks possible. But I do think there are opportunities to do new figures as CO web exclusives or even mainline releases, which can then be flipped into future budget sets to help in recouping the initial tooling.

On the bright side you could use the plastic packaging as a free playset to recreate the immortality freeze from the Five Doctors.

Despite so much criticism from the minority, these are 3 good sets. Yes, they may not be a special as some that’ve gone before them in the B&M range, but we should be thankful we’re getting what we’re getting. Hopefully CO have some tricks up their sleeves for the 60th to at least please the “monitory moaners”

Anybody else thinks this is a bit naff, for those that have been collecting awhile have plenty of daleks, do we really need more slight varients to what we have, i have a timelord from the series 3 wave, these ones just feel more like a money grab,

What a selfish take on collectors and collecting! The range started how long ago? 15 years or more? Not everyone was into the range (or even old enough?) to grab, say, the 2011 Destiny of the Daleks set at the time of release (which can exchange hands for 150-200 quid now) – the refreshed Destiny of the Daleks two pack gave collectors the chance to own their own, whilst other collectors could get a better looking model. If you feel you’ve got enough variants, NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO BUY THESE!

Controversial opinion, but most of the three figure sets have started to go downhill. We have gone from re using two of the same bodies, to reusing 3 of the same heads boring heads, to now reusing 3 of the same bodies… in one release. Ironically, as the quality has gone down – the prices have gone up. Im just talking about “three figure packs” – the daleks and tardis sets are great – even then, the tardis is becoming stale now. Id much rather straight up re releases with updated paint, if it means interesting variation in each set.

An example would be Night of the Doctor Eighth, with Blue Navy coat, perhaps paired with Classic Sontaran repaint Dark eyes style, and Invasion Cyberman based on Kroton Comic Cyberman. A bit of variation, and reusing figures. It doesnt have to be episode specific, just Era/Type. A Triple Monsters set with a 60s/70s/80s monster, again – more interesting. Army building.

My other hope, is that they stop muting colours so much. The original eighth doctor from night of the doctor has a pop to it. The B&M one looks washed out by comparison. I know; probably more realistic. But this is something people tend to display. I just find B&M figures in sets always share most of the same colouring now (bar a couple exceptions) – obviously to cut on costs, but surely they can offer somthing better.

Its a shame because I actually defended the eighth doctor set and flux set, i even understood the Tennant set – but its just becoming figures for the sake of figures. How come they make all these new, horrific Tom Baker Head Sculpts but they struggle to use a more accurate Tenth Doctor David Tennant Head… They couldnt even make a longer haired Sixth Doctor Sculpt.

All these Tom Baker Sculpts are a joke, they are going backwards. I know Tom has big ominous eyes, but come on.

I do like the Dalek re issues though, they are pretty cool. The Hurndall was great, as was the Sixth Doctor repaint.

I really love that time lord set actually. Especially the pink one, it looks so good. (I last watched the deadly assassin YEARS ago and remember pretty much nothing about it lol).

It’s a bit weird how they specify the bronze as being the metaltron, MENTION the most distinct thing about it (the brass band) and then don’t put it on the figure lol. But I guess it makes up for all the times it was put on daleks that didn’t have it haha.

Honestly, I don’t see the issue finding them up north currently they are in nearly every store and left in abundance in most. Baring the tardis. I could pick up any Dalek set tomorrow from last wave. B&M doing a fantastic job in my eyes from a few years ago. These are readily avaible in most

@Dwho Not all regions of the UK are the same. The North may have them in abundance, but eh East Midlands certainly doesn’t. There’s a few of us looking around and the Dalek sets have not appeared around here. It’s not scalpers either because there are no spaces on the shelves for them. I think it’s down to poor sales in previous years. There simply aren’t enough fans around Notts and Derbys buying them so the stores aren’t stocking them..

Yeah, it’s a postcode lottery, and if you live in Derbyshire your numbers are unlikely to ever come up – for whatever reason it’s become a distribution blackspot for these figures, and that’s been the case since early 2021. It’s a good job I’m not a completist because I’ve missed out on seven of the HOTD sets over the last three years. Your spending power becomes significantly truncated when you’re relying on eBay or Amazon to get hold of the sets you really, REALLY want.

It’s actually a relief nowadays when a wave is announced and I’ve got no interest in the sets therein, which as a long – term fan and collector doesn’t seem right at all.

The Deadly Assassin set is the one that has tempted me most from all the B&M releases this year, some nice paintwork on the robes and great looking head sculpts, especially Chancellor Goth. I also never got the generic Timelord figure so this set is something different for me. May have to look out for it in due course.

@kdogstudios I’m beginning to think B&M reckon Derbyshire/Notts is a fan-less zone! All I’ve ever seen is six TARDIS sets in Nottingham Castle Meadow store and that was over a month ago. I’ve regularly tried Ilkeston, Spondon, Nottm Marina, and Allenton. Nothing. Not even space reserved on the shelves. Just bobble-heads, vinyl Daleks, 9th Doctor sets and 13th Yaz & holo Angel. Even the scalpers have abandoned us!

Ah damn. I was really hoping that the DA figure set was going to be foofy shirt Tom, Matrix Hunter Goth and a re – released decayed Master. I’d thought that re – use, repaints and a degree of fudgeology using existing DW/Primeval moulds could have achieved this, with only the Goth headsculpt possibly being required as a new piece.

I have bob all interest in three poorly articulated Time Lord re – release figures, no matter how purty them thar colours is, and as the Dalek sets will once again be rarer than hen’s teeth round these parts I can now knock these sets off my Christmas card list and hassle Santa for some Hasbro and McFarlane figs instead. The Hurndall set has definitely been the highlight of this year’s waves for me, which is weird considering how little interest I had when it was first leaked/announced.

Just seen some in hand images of the Bronze Dalek and it looks so much better in natural lighting. Not as bright. It really does remind me of the Metaltron. Better than the SFX Bronze we got, that’s for sure.

And the Renegade Dalek is beautiful! I think that shade of grey really resembles promotion shots from the show in the outdoor settings.

I think the purple and gold is stunning on Borusa, just looks so well done, but the reused head mould is a pity. Now obviously it costs money to make an accurate 1st Borusa head, but it doesn’t cost money to just call the figure a generic time lord, as I think that just works better that pretending that’s Borusa.

I’ll be happy to pick up the renegade Daleks from remembrance as I didn’t get them the first time round, and the new series Daleks looks amazing, that thinner sculpt on sec looks very elegant, despite the Daleks saying they have no concept of it. 🙂 Much better that the one from the 2006 release
