Patrick Troughton stars in this recreation of a lost classic from 1966.

The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Polly and Ben to a colony on the swamp planet of Vulcan. Soon after arriving, the Doctor witnesses a brutal murder.

Meanwhile, in another part of the colony an ancient crashed space capsule has been discovered in the swamps. The colony’s misguided chief scientist opens the capsule and discovers a group of strange metal ‘creatures’ inside. The creatures appear to be long dead. The Doctor calls the metal creatures ‘Daleks’ and claims that they are incredibly dangerous.

‘Power of the Daleks’ was the first Doctor Who story to star Patrick Troughton as the Doctor – broadcast between November and December 1966. Sadly, none of the six original broadcast episodes of ‘Power of the Daleks’ any longer exist in the BBC Film Archives. However, complete audio recordings of the lost episodes have survived in the hands of private collectors. And it is these audio recordings that are used as the basis for this special animated production of the programme. Now in a brand new edition and brought to you in glorious black and white…

Includes exciting new special features:
• Two new documentaries about Power of the Daleks
• 1993 BBC audio version of The Power of the Daleks narrated by Tom Baker
• Raw incidental music
• Photogrammetry Featurette
• Whicker’s World – I Don’t Like My Monsters to Have Oedipus Complexes
• Daleks – The Early Years: A 1992 documentary presented by Peter Davison
• Robin Hood – 1953 Episode: Patrick Troughton’s earliest surviving TV appearance
• BBC archive footage from BBC regional news, BBC Breakfast, Blue Peter and Newsnight
• Previously unreleased animation trailers and animatics

Additional bonus material:
• Audio commentaries by Anneke Wills on each episode
• Animation test footage
• Photo Gallery, including previously unreleased and rediscovered full colour on-set photos from 1966.
• Servants & Masters – The Making of The Power of the Daleks
• Doctor Who – The Highlanders

I want this for the Daleks Early Years doc that was on the old vhs release.

I’ll wait until it’s reduced in price i think in another few months.

I think it looks better. The improvements based on the trailer are mostly on the character movements and facial movements. The movements looks more natural and realistic and less jerky. Lesterson’s facial movements are especially an improvement. That was some of the biggest issues on the last release for me. The other big issue was the awkward pauses but it’s impossible to tell if it has been addressed in the trailer. They also changed Patrick Troughton tartan trousers (considering the issues with tartan in the past I’m cool with it)

I understand why people think that it looks the same when the visual style is pretty much the same but that’s not where the changes lie. It’s more the human characters and the awkward way they moved and their facial movement that was the problem with the original. Personally I don’t think the trailer really sold the changes. It showed some character moments which to me did look nicer but not enough to give people a proper look at the changes. The sets and daleks were already the highlights of the last version. I think once we see actual scenes rather than snippets and we can actually compare to what’s changed

I think the Power of the Daleks is one of classic Doctor Who’s best stories and arguably one of the Dalek’s strongest stories too – clearly inspired by Nigel Kneale’s superlative “Quatermass and the Pit” story – the discovery of a mysterious capsule, the unlocking of that capsule to reveal its ancient dormant alien occupants inside…

Pat Troughton is ‘finding’ the character (I find the Doctor’s recorder playing grated a bit) but what a story to kick off with… I thought the animation of the Daleks on the original animated version of POTD was superbly done, and really emphasised the Daleks’ cunning… I’m seriously considering buying this new version. I’m sure Anneke’s commentary will be interesting too!

Saw the trailer. Personally I saw no difference. Maybe the quick change of the TARDIS sign I don’t see how it looks smoother at all. Even if it was it’s That’s just a simple auto add frames of abobe something. The trailer could have perhaps showed us all the fixed stuff In between the new stuff. Like the fix in clothe continuity. I still have to buy it as a collector. I still think this should have been a blu Ray only and a companion to the original. I can’t wait till the even special edition with even more fixes!!!!.

See people are complaining already about it. Personally I thought the animation looked so much better. Smoother and naturalistic. If you don’t want this just don’t buy it and leave others to enjoy it.

Makes sense. The team really want to get this right miles beyond what the original release did. I’d happily give them all the time in the world to make this perfect (I mean the episodes are pretty much going to be missing forever so it’s not like there’s a deadline).

Unlikely if I’m honest. The cost of finding and getting access to the original film reels and new scans to do a new cut would be extremely expensive and that’s before you take into account all the effects would all need to be redone as they were originally done on videotape. And that is if the original film reels still exist. There was a fire in universal’s vault and it’s possible that the TV movie may have been a casualty. Plus I don’t there is enough non used material to do a worthwhile directors cut anyway. The dvd only included about a minute of alternative cuts. It would be a similar job as the recent st: next gen remasters and that was $70 grand for a 40 odd minute episode and that didn’t need the additional cost of being tracked down

I re-watched the ‘Loose Cannon’ version of ‘Evil of the Daleks’ today. Comparing ‘Evil’ with ‘Power’, I’d have to say ‘Power of the Daleks’ still stands as the best of the two Troughton/Dalek stories in my opinion. ‘Evil of the Daleks’ is good, but would definitely had worked better as a five parter. The first two episodes, and the last two are fantastic. But the middle three are quite slow and drawn out. Overall ‘Evil’ is a decent 8/10. ‘Power of the Daleks’ is a perfect 10/10, and David Whitaker’s best script for Doctor Who. But I appreciate Dennis Spooner’s involvement also makes ‘Power’ the success that it is.

      May 15th, 2020 - 12:35pm

I find if I listen to evil my mind starts drifting in ep 7. I do think it’s a great story but it could have been condensed to a much tighter 6 parter. I feel the same with the John peel novels as well. Power is a good read but evil has a bit too much waffle, mainly to fill out the word count! If they announce evil tomorrow I’d snap it up though. It’s a story that I think would benefit from being visual

Shame about the Highlanders, but understandable.
I know they’ve said that tartan is difficult to do regarding animation, but I recently watched a Netflix animated series called Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts; it features a large group of characters who wear tartan shirts and trousers.
What they’ve done is keep the tartan pattern static (i.e. not moving) but animate the clothing material around it (as one would normally would). You can see how they’ve done it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SmSXxVPDT0
Would this be easier to do regarding a Highlanders animation?

Tbh, I’m not sure they even need to do the tartan so much. They’ve removed the patterns from the Doctor’s trousers and Jamie’s kilt, so why not with the other characters?

    • MJS

Wouldn’t bother me either. As long as everything else is reasonably accurate the costumes can be simplified as far as I’m concerned

    • Ogronic

      July 23rd, 2020 - 6:10pm

After Culloden, when The Highlanders is set, wearing Tartan was banned by the English as part of their attempt to crush scottish culture. I think that the story can be made without it, and it was just a kind way of saying that they don’t want to ainmate historical stories.

The whole BBC cashing in thing is so odd to me. Surely that is the point of merchandise? To make money from a product that people want, and there are lots of people who are very happy about this DVD release, generates money for the BBC. As it does for any company. Universal, fox, Disney, continue the list yourself but the whole point of merchandise is to “cash in” on a subject people like. If you are so angry then just don’t buy it. But please allow those who are excited by this to enjoy it.

I agree entirely and these DVDs and blu rays are made by people who love the show. How many other BBC classics get this restoration treatment, care and passion?
Look at Only Fools and Horses, video straight to DVD transfer, no special features no effort to improve picture and sound and many of them edited down as well and shorter than the transmitted versions

We Whovians are so unbelievably lucky to have a team of dedicated professionals who produce these with so much love and people still moan. No one is forcing anyone to buy this, I didn’t see it coming especially given the current situation and I can’t wait personally – It’s Troughton and its a classic!

It has Daleks which sells and is a well regarded story. Only has about 10 characters too so it stands an excellent chance. Only thing that stands against it is that it’s 7 episodes and there is quite a number of sets. Think it might be the next unannounced animation as evil follows on from the faceless ones

Interesting that Charles Norton says ‘The Highlanders’ soundtrack could be on a future release as a bonus feature. The only story I feel would be appropriate to include ‘The Highlanders’ soundtrack, would be ‘The Underwater Menace’ . As that story directly follows ‘The Highlanders’. So I reckon the chances of ‘The Underwater Menace’ special edition DVD being released is quite likely in future.

I don’t think it really matters which story it’s with. The main thing is we get it. But it does sound as if a Highlanders animation isn’t going to happen. Personally I’d be quite happy if they did underwater menace and included Highlanders.

Well, if they felt ‘The Power of the Daleks’ needed improvement, then ‘The Underwater Menace’ certainly does! I really would like to see an animated version of ‘The Underwater Menace’. I think the story would be improved as a cartoon.

Some would argue that it already was! To be honest I enjoy underwater. Yes it’s daft and some of the acting is a little… exuberant shall we say and boy does that fish people sequence go on too long but it’s also quite good fun. Troughton and his team tardis are great and animation would really improve the overall story (mainly because you’d know what was happening!) But I’d also be happy for it to be an extra release like power. Just animate 1 and 4 in black and white. If you watch the moonbase the team who did that animation did Ben, polly and Jamie in their underwater outfits so nick their designs!

it was allegedly with the other eps…but was supposedly stolen. i did read a few months back that they where really close to ‘recovering it’ but have still not found it…and if they they were that close to recovering it i think they would have got it back by now don’t you think.

But they have found it in the hands of a private collector, and they haven’t got it back yet because they’re trying to get on good terms with the collector before opening negotiations.

    • Gordon

      April 30th, 2020 - 8:40pm

But you wouldn’t have gotten web 3 or underwater menace instead. It’s not an either or situation. Both of those would have have to have been started from scratch and would need far more time and money thrown at it. They have taken the original as a basis and reworked what didn’t work with the original and people weren’t happy with as it was an extremely rushed production riddled with errors that none of the animators were pleased with the final result. It’s the original team of animators most of which no longer work on the current animations any more so it’s not taking away time from other animations. Anne-Marie Walsh Who did the faceless ones is free to work on something else while Charles norton works on this. The aim is to do 2 full length animations a year. We are getting faceless ones and fury from the deep this year so this is clearly an addition to the 2 animations that we are already getting. According to Patrick mulkern of the radio times another animation is in the pipeline so other things are in the works

      May 1st, 2020 - 7:16am

Maybe there is more of a chance now that ‘The Underwater Menace’ could get a ‘special edition’ release at some point. To be honest, I’d be absolutely fine if they just animated missing parts 1 and 4 in black white, alongside the existing episodes 2 and 3. Also included could be alternate versions of missing episodes 1 and 4, with a decent tele-snap, photo reconstruction this time done by Derek Handley. A vast improvement on it’s dire original DVD release.

    • Anonymous

      May 1st, 2020 - 9:52am

I’d be happy with that Tim. No need for a full animation of either menace or web but a special edition with just the missing episodes animated would be brilliant

It would be stupid and a waste of money to animate web of fear episode 3 if there is a chance it could turn up and we do have many other missing episodes that are less likely to be found that needs animating first. It will probably take years till web of fear 3 turns up but it will be worth the wait

    • Gordon

      May 2nd, 2020 - 9:54am

I can see them waiting for now but The bbc won’t wait forever though. It’s 7 years and counting since someone ran off with it. How much longer do they realistically wait for it? I think if it’s not turned up by the time wheel and snowmen are knocked off the animation list in a couple of years they may just animate web 3 as it completes season 5.

    • Anonymous

      May 2nd, 2020 - 10:59am

Exactly Gordon, there is only so long they can wait. Besides it depends as well on the person who has it. They may be demanding an unreasonable amount of money. It may turn out to be cheaper to animate rather than give in to an extortionate price.

We all know what will happen: The BBC will just animate the missing episode & release it with some new special features. When the original episode turn’s up they will just re-issue it again. It just mean’s the BBC will have 3 bite’s of the cherry instead. The first issue had the missing episodes & a re-con & nothing else. The second issue will have the missing episode animated with special features, so to have a completed story. The third issue will have the full completed story with the same special features & animated episode & maybe some new material.

So just don’t buy it anonymous. There is no guarantee that the original will ever be returned. So don’t presume it will be

Animations cost money, its in the BBC’s interest not to bother. If they do a special edition just throw in telesnaps and don’t bother with the animation. If Season 5 comes out, just do the same thing. Why clog up your production line when there’s other options available?

It’s only 1 episode though. It wouldn’t be that expensive to do when compared with the full blown animations And considering how popular the recent animations they would almost certainly get a return on it. Looking at the required assets it Probably Would only take 4-8 weeks to do. Wouldn’t be taking that much time away from the production line. With the aim to do an animation by each team a year. there is nothing to say they can’t do a story that takes 8-9 months and also do web 3 that could take 2 months to do. That wouldn’t effect the production schedule

Personally Gordon I’d be very happy with both and underwater menace se and a web of fear se. As you say it’s not much to do, just three episodes between them and it would “complete” two more stories. If they did web as a se with just the reconstruction of episode 3 I probably wouldn’t bother with, even though it’s one of my favourite stories but if they did an animated eps 3 se I’d snap it up. Yes the episode exists but there really is no guarantee the BBC will ever be able to retrieve it if it’s in the hands of a collector or just in the hands of someone after big money.

I find the tele-snap, photograph reconstruction of episode 3 of ‘The Web of Fear’ adequate enough. Sure, it’s not the proper actual episode, but of all the episodes of that story, (apart from featuring Lethbridge-Stewart’s introduction), I regard it to be the weakest instalment. The episode mainly features Jamie and Evans constantly walking around the underground tunnels, and the other characters (ironically) watching a slide show, like we are!

I’m surprised and extremely happy by the announcement of this ‘special edition’ release of ‘The Power of the Daleks’. It’s a classic. And whilst the original animation wasn’t bad, the human characters were a bit hit and miss. Some scenes drawn better than others. But it was forgivable, due to the short amount of time to get the story out in time for it’s 50th anniversary. But if this ‘special edition’ is anything like ‘The Macra Terror’ or ‘The Faceless Ones’ animations, then it is sure to be a treat.

yeah. 50 years is quite an aggressive schedule.

Sigh, the decision to animate was made late in the day.

Derek Handley said that The Highlanders soundtrack was removed due to lack of space on the disc. It was accidentally listed on the press release.

The Highlanders will eventually be released on it’s own DVD anyway (hopefully), so there shouldn’t be anything to worry about.

Have to say if one of the animation problems is tartan then personally I wouldn’t be bothered if they simplified the outfits.

As they’ve said, it isn’t going to stop them if they get the money to do it. It just means that there are other stories which are more appealing to them.

However what serials they do are ultimately down to the BBC. So The Highlanders would probably be done if the BBC commissioned it.
