The Ice Warriors to be Animated for DVD

The Ice Warriors animated for DVD – exclusive first look

From the official site www.doctorwho.tv

Lost episodes of Second Doctor adventure The Ice Warriors are being animated for DVD release, doctorwho.tv can exclusively announce. Animation studio Qurios have been commissioned to recreate the missing episodes two and three, which see Ice Warrior leader Varga revive, kidnap Victoria and defrost his glacier-bound army.

“We’ve been discussing the various ways Qurios could reconstruct these episodes for over three years” said Dan Hall, Managing Director of Pup Ltd Media Consultancy, producer of the DVD. “So it’s really, really satisfying to finally see them animated. Qurios have a great track record in excellent and innovative animations”.

See an exclusive “work in progress” clip, below, where the Doctor tries to convince Leader Clent that temperamental humans – even the recently fired scientist Penley – are still far better than machines:

It was recently announced that the Ice Warriors would be returning to Doctor Who for the first time since 1974, in a Mark Gatiss-penned adventure aboard a submarine. Find out more about the return of the Martian monsters at the BBC’s Doctor Who website.

When asked about using a different animation studio to previous releases, Hall replied, “Doctor Who has had many different visual styles thanks to changing directors, designers and production methods. We wanted to mirror this in our choice of animation partners”.

Qurios Entertainment’s previous work includes visual effects for sci-fi sitcom Hyperdrive, puppet comedy Mongrels and titles for Doctor Who DVD extra series Who Peter. Veteran producer of the classic Who range, Chris Chapman has overseen the animation, Niel Bushnell is the producer for Qurios and the animation director is Chris Chatterton.

I think they could animate the following:
    The crusade
    The moonbase
    The underwater menace
    Mission to the unknown

The moonbase and the crusade should have been done a long time ago as they have had half of there story recovered and they should animate it by now (it is possible they don’t like the idea of half episode half animation) as for the underwater menace it’s been enough time to announce an animation and for mission to the unknown it’s really easy to animate all they have to do is animate a single episode

Don’t really see how they should have already had these stories animated. They have been busy with reign 10th planet to do anything else. It’s not as easy as you put regarding mission. Its got no telesnaps camera scripts or any surviving 8mm footage or any indications on what to animate and make it as close to the episode as possible. Not just that regarding mission. The episode itself is just a trailer for masterplan. The animation for reign took 11 months so it certainly isn’t as quick or as easy as you suggest.

I think they will be meaning they are overdue as Cosgrove Hall went under and we ended up waiting several years to get anything else.

It really caused quite a few problems for them as Cogrove Hall were not charging a lot which would have made bigger stories feasible, indeed the second story they were intending to do was The Power of the Daleks but it didn’t get any further than some initial concept art. After that BBC Worldwide have been understandably cautious about the whole thing, hence the limits.

Cosgrove hall was actuall very expensive for its 2 episodes (60 k) and the only reason why the budget for it was so high was because the budget was originally earmarked for a shalka follow up that didn’t happen. It was also planned to show it on BBC 4 but that also did not happen. The animation for reign only cost about a fifth of invasion and they could barely afford that on the current budget.

But rather crucially the bill went to the BBC rather than 2Entertain (they still got a bit of the bill, but not much) and the two episodes were practically finished by the time they were actually informed of the project (or so they said at the time of release).

With the current releases, the DVD range are personally having to pay the bills, rather than having help from the BBC so it makes things trickier.

There was and it was only 2 minutes long. Not sure if its on YouTube or not. Wasn’t on the DVD as there was no room left for it.

Obviously it allows them to do another SE of RoT in a couple of years time to get more money from us.

Hopefully they release animations for the underwater menace, the moonbase and the crusade! They are the only storys that are possible in budget form to release! I think these storys will be released in 2014 hopefully! The only story that would be over budget but would be awsome would be galaxy 4 and mission to the unknown! that would be awsome and would be awsome releases!

not sure whether to delete my Loose Cannon Reconstructions on this story now that l’ve heard that the BBC Reconstruction will be available on this release. I decided to delete The Tenth Planet Episode 4 Reconstruction for the same reason but since the BBC Reconstruction is a condensed version i think i might keep it like The Reign of Terror. What are your thoughts? did any of you out there just bin their copy in favour of Animation or do you like keeping the Reconstruction for the hard work and effort put into it?

Same goes for The Invasion too, with The Ice Warriors being animated that makes 4 Animated Releases and theirs the possibility to make that 6 or 7 with more to come 🙂

The special editions are being produced at the same time as the animation so it doesn’t really matter if they animate them or not. Picture quality maybe poor on ghost light but there is little improvment that can be made as its on a 2nd generation 2 inch tape.

dose that mean they cant clean it up because it looks like vhs

    • gordon

      March 2nd, 2013 - 3:53pm

They can clean it up but they are doubtful they can improve on the original DVD release due to the quality of the tape used to record it

I think that ghostlight would be a great rerelease!the story is fantastic and we need a special edition of this story!the picture quality is poor and there could be more special features and the cover art could be more better after seeing the amazing cover art of the visitations! This story is one of the storys that need a special edition next year!

As I’ve already said the picture quality in ghost light is poor but due to the quality of the tape used to record it the restoration team don’t believe there is going to be much difference or improvement over the original DVD (which is the main reason for the special editions) and there is plenty of extras for ghost light already especially as its a 3 parter

    • gordon

      March 3rd, 2013 - 11:55pm

      Extras for ghost light was:

Commentary from Sophie Aldred, mark Platt, Andrew cartnell and mark Ayres
18 minutes of deleted and extended scenes
      12 minutes question time
      38 minute making of
20 minute look at last recording block
      5 minutes photo gallery
      5.1 audio remix
      iso score
      Production notes

90 minutes of extras. For a 3 part story it is well represented and isn’t really missing extras and as mentioned the members of the restoration team doubt they could improve over the original DVD due to the quality of tape used to record it

The vhs version for ghostlight was way better than the dvd which agreed is pretty poor.

‘Ghost Light’ was shot in very low-light conditions, designed to mimic the look of a Victorian house lit by gaslight and candles, and recorded on 1″ analogue videotape. Unfortunately, the combination of the low lighting, the ancient Link tube cameras that were still in use in studio TC3, and the multi-generation analogue tape editing conspired to produce some of the worst quality pictures in the show’s history.

In the interest of fairness we are strongly due a revisited McCoy story – all the other doctors have been well ‘revisited’ over the last few years – however, with lots of the ‘great’ McCoy stories having been given double disc treatment already, Ghost Light is possibly the ONLY contender

The total so far for the revisited special edition rereleases
1 for the first doctor (Aztecs)
2 for the 2nd doctor (tomb and seeds)
6 for the 3rd doctor (spearhead inferno claws 3 docs carnival and green death)
3 for the 4th doctor (ark talons and robots)
4 for the 5th doctor (visitation 5 docs resurrection and caves)
1 for the 6th doctors (varos)
1 for the 7th doctors (remembrance)
1 for the 8th doctor (tv movie)

      March 5th, 2013 - 9:02am

Thats the same amount of special editions as the first 7th and 8th. The main problem with mcoy stories getting revisited is they are pretty new compared to the pertwee stories and there hasn’t really been much technological improvement to improve the quality of hi era. Going by Dan halls comments at galifrey 1 about in future possibly revisiting stories more for the extras than the improved picture quality they are running out of early releases they believe they can improve thre picture quality of.

As the covers for mind of evil zygons spearhead blu ray and green death havent been done or revealed yet its a fair guess ice warriors cover hasnt been done yet. The trailer is on the aztecs SE and thats due on the 11th march so its not long till it will be revealed.

      March 1st, 2013 - 10:38pm

Do you think there will be a trailer for the revisited Visitation (that’s a mouthful!) on the Aztecs DVD? Or are they going to give us a BIG surprise and release it after Aztecs anyway – seems like quite a big gap that needs filling between Aztecs and Visitation to me!

    • Gordon

      March 2nd, 2013 - 12:26am

No trailer for visitation on aztecs SE as its already been confirmed on review copies of aztecs that its ice warriors. The trailer might appear online later when it gets closer to release date. The reason on why there is such a big gap between aztecs and visitation is IW was supposed to be due in april but was pushed back(prob down to animation not being ready) and nothing else was ready at the strict delivery date to go out in the slot instead.

    • Gordon

      March 2nd, 2013 - 12:29am

As chris chapman (who is overseeing the animation) has said he is still working on it there is no chance of ice warriors being finished in time to be released in april
