The Ice Warriors to be Animated for DVD

The Ice Warriors animated for DVD – exclusive first look

From the official site www.doctorwho.tv

Lost episodes of Second Doctor adventure The Ice Warriors are being animated for DVD release, doctorwho.tv can exclusively announce. Animation studio Qurios have been commissioned to recreate the missing episodes two and three, which see Ice Warrior leader Varga revive, kidnap Victoria and defrost his glacier-bound army.

“We’ve been discussing the various ways Qurios could reconstruct these episodes for over three years” said Dan Hall, Managing Director of Pup Ltd Media Consultancy, producer of the DVD. “So it’s really, really satisfying to finally see them animated. Qurios have a great track record in excellent and innovative animations”.

See an exclusive “work in progress” clip, below, where the Doctor tries to convince Leader Clent that temperamental humans – even the recently fired scientist Penley – are still far better than machines:

It was recently announced that the Ice Warriors would be returning to Doctor Who for the first time since 1974, in a Mark Gatiss-penned adventure aboard a submarine. Find out more about the return of the Martian monsters at the BBC’s Doctor Who website.

When asked about using a different animation studio to previous releases, Hall replied, “Doctor Who has had many different visual styles thanks to changing directors, designers and production methods. We wanted to mirror this in our choice of animation partners”.

Qurios Entertainment’s previous work includes visual effects for sci-fi sitcom Hyperdrive, puppet comedy Mongrels and titles for Doctor Who DVD extra series Who Peter. Veteran producer of the classic Who range, Chris Chapman has overseen the animation, Niel Bushnell is the producer for Qurios and the animation director is Chris Chatterton.

So there budget right now on Animation is 2 episodes only i get that, but what’s to say that in the future it could be stepped up to 3 or even 4 although that would be much later, it does ask questions like whether The Celestial Toymaker and Galaxy 4 could be done >_<

It could all depend on how affordable it is come about 12 to18 months time (once moonbase underwater menace and crusade are animated and that is if they get done). I can see the possibility of the range stopping after next year. They are pretty much out of revisits where there is visual improvment possible (which is the main reason for them) and once the limit regarding animation is reached I can see it being done then possibly be boxsets to completely finish it off.

      March 1st, 2013 - 9:24am

yeah that would make sense, things that could get released could be: The TV Movie on Blu-Ray although probably out of their budget, More Special Editions however at the moment as you say there’s no real need and l’m sure alot of collectors like myself think the same way, l the limit on Animation could go to 3 Episodes for sure but 4 and definitely 5 is pretty unlikely also on the animation releases there has to be at least some material i don’t think Mission to the Unknown would be possible if not as an extra.

Also Boxsets would be awesome to see, i could easily see Doctor Who DVD Boxsets coming out by Doctor such as the Fourth Doctor being something like Robot, Genesis of the Daleks and the Talons of Weng-Chiang for example i think that would sell really well. Its sad to see the DVD Range come to its inevitable close l’ve only been collecting since 2012 once Revisitations 3 came out and l’m still hooked l’m sure some of you on this site have been collecting since the Five Doctors came out 😀

Well to me the obvious option for future animated releases is to broadcast them on BBC television as well, thus splitting the budget between two departments. I’m quite sure that if all six episodes of Power of the Daleks were transmitted on BBC1 the viewing figures would be pretty solid and that in turn would boost the DVD sales.

1 problem. None of the BBC broadcasters in the uk are interested in showing classic who animated or existing. Even BBC america that are showing classic who are not using the far superior quality restored versions that BBC worldwide own the copyright of those versions. The animations are BBC ww copyright so I think its unlikely

Just to clarify it’s ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’ rather than anything else! 😛

Personally I wouldn’t really like this especially with The Daleks’ Master Plan where it would have to fit around the existing episodes with different actors. Plus it would be such a challenge to get people looking like the originals, I just don’t think it would work. I’m more for animated episodes myself!

    • Anonymous

      February 28th, 2013 - 6:57pm

BBC Worldwide won’t let them animate Mission to the Unknown, the conditions are it can’t be any more than two episodes and the whole thing can’t just be animation.

That leaves The Crusade, The Underwater Menace and The Moonbase as possible releases (although as the conditions are set to releases rather than stories they could get away with splitting The Wheel in Space in half and having two seperate releases to get around it if they get desperate).

    • Some bloke

      February 28th, 2013 - 7:00pm

but mission to the unknown is only 1 25 minute episode!

    • Anonymous

      February 28th, 2013 - 7:11pm

Given the nature of the story (no existing footage, no Doctor, prequel to a story they couldn’t possibly fund the restoration of) I can’t blame them for avoiding it.

Altough if the number of episodes per release goes up to three, and they can get away with a split up release like I suggested for The Wheel in Space above, then they would be able to release The Daleks’ Master Plan which may in turn make Mission to the Unknown do better in terms of sales.

    • Some bloke

      February 28th, 2013 - 7:18pm

what do you mean ‘split up release’. They’re not going to split a story in two and then release those halves on separate discs, if thats what your meaning.

    • drjakeyoung

      February 28th, 2013 - 7:36pm

wait a minute, you know the trial of a time lord, or the key to time box sets, the individual DVDS, did they get a budget assigned to them or did they give the budget to the box set as a whole?

    • Anonymous

      February 28th, 2013 - 7:42pm

That is exactly what I mean, and they have already done it, three times in fact. The only difference is splitting it across seperate releases.

Given that the main range released The Trial of a Time Lord in four seperate boxes, and the DVD Files have started breaking them up as well it wouldn’t be too far a stretch of the imagination, especially as they will be getting desperate for new releases in the coming years.

    • Anonymous

      February 28th, 2013 - 7:44pm

I’d presume it was just a budget for the whole box set, but determined from each individual disc within it.

    • drjakeyoung

      February 28th, 2013 - 7:52pm

i get what you mean!just like trial of a time lord but instead of 4 cases, just have 2! the 1st one could be mission to the unknown with the master plan episodes 1-5 (plus bonus features)and everything else on the other disk! That would work in my opinion!

    • Anonymous

      February 28th, 2013 - 8:15pm

The Daleks’ Master Plan would need at least two discs, with another one for special features.

So if they divided it over three discs (episodes 1-4, 5-8 and 9-12) then you have three manageable chunks, each with an existing episode and three needing animating. That way all you’d need to do is wait until the budget could accomodate three episodes instead of just one. Once that has been handled Mission to the Unknown can be released, and that sets the precedent for releases with no existing footage and then everything can be animated in theory.

    • Anonymous

      February 28th, 2013 - 8:16pm

Although I will point out, the splitting would only work if the DVDs were released completely seperately at the moment, however box sets may work in future.

    • Some bloke

      February 28th, 2013 - 8:20pm

i dont understand why you would split wheel in space though, just sounds stupid. Trial of a timelord had 14 parts, of course that was going to be split, but also because it had three seperate stories within one, if they were to animate daleks master plan, i reckon they would do the same as what they did with the war games.

    • gordon

      February 28th, 2013 - 9:01pm

It’s not that the BBC won’t let them they don’t have the budget for 9 episode stories. a box set for masterplan wouldn’t work as the budget for a boxset is higher but when split over 2/3/4 stories it works out less per disc overall.

    • Anonymous

      February 28th, 2013 - 10:05pm

They don’t have the budget because the BBC won’t let them do it.

    • gordon

      February 28th, 2013 - 11:23pm

That’s because 9 episodes of animation is too expensive on a DVD budget. If the DVDs sold enough copies that the budget can afford 9 episodes they would. They don’t sell anywhere near enough copies to warrent 9 animated episodes they wont. BBC world wide (the department that release the DVDs) the commercial arm of the BBC and their aim is to make money. They are not going to commission something they are going to lose money

    • gordon

      March 1st, 2013 - 12:29am

I would like to point out that Ian Levine’s version of mission to the unknown was concidered for release but was turned down primary as there was no place for it and there was not enough footage to warrent it for its own release.

    • pathdw98

      March 1st, 2013 - 1:41am

isnt galaxy 4 only a 4 part story? then air lock with recon of eps 1 2 & 4 on aztecs special edition proves that 3 animated eps is too expensive for them.

    • Anonymous

      March 1st, 2013 - 6:47pm

I don’t think you are getting what I am trying to say here, I am talking about breaking up the stories into smaller manageable chunks that are far more affordable to animate. For many stories this wouldn’t make the slightest bit of difference, but it could help certain stories given the right cicumstances (which at the moment is only one story).

Dan hall said at galifrey 1 that are no firm plans regarding underwater menace 2. I can see 3 possibilities. 1. It’s getting put on iTunes (there was plans at 1 point to put airlock on there) 2. It’s an extra (probably ice warriors) 3. It’s getting animated (which probably rules out a 2013 release). I think its a possibility Dan is waiting to see how the reaction is with the ice warriors first compared with reign before deciding
