Preview – The Aztecs Special Edition DVD

The Aztecs Special Edition DVD – Preview

With improved picture quality and clarity the Aztec Special edition DVD is released on 11th March 2013.

This 15th century story, first broadcast in 1964, is set in Mexico and features a wonderful array of costumes. It explores the theme of “changing history”.

The visual improvement alone is well worth the investment but of course this DVD also contains the recently discovered “Air Lock”, episode 3 of Galaxy 4 making it a must buy. Watching this episode is a real treat – especially as most of us have never seen it before!

“Air Lock” is surrounded by short reconstructions of the other episodes in Galaxy 4 using stills and audio to complete the adventure.

Recently found footage of one of the The Dalek Movies being filmed is well worth a look as is clive Dunn as the 1st Doctor!

Collectors of Merchandise will be interested in Doctor Forever! – Celestial Toyroom – the first of a new five-part series looking at Doctor Who toys.

Alasdair Dewar (Character) pushes a button on a previously unseen classic figure varaint that collectors will love i’m sure!

Dapol, Product enterprise and other early toys are all featured.

The Aztecs Special Edition DVD

The TARDIS arrives in fifteenth century Mexico inside the tomb of one-time Aztec High Priest Yetaxa. The travellers become cut off from the ship when they explore the temple outside and the tomb door closes behind them. Barbara is proclaimed by the High Priest of Knowledge, Autloc, as Yetaxa’s divine reincarnation. However, she incurs the enmity of the High Priest of Sacrifice, Tlotoxl, when – against the Doctor’s advice – she attempts to use her new-found authority to put an end to the Aztec practice of human sacrifice.

Events reach a climax on the Day of Darkness – the time of a solar eclipse. Ian’s unwilling conflict with the Aztecs’ ‘chosen warrior’, Ixta, ends in a fight in which the latter falls to his death from the temple roof. The Doctor manages to reopen the tomb door using a wheel-and-pulley that he has carved (the Aztecs not having mastered the use of the wheel) and the travellers make good their escape.

Disc 1

  • 4 x 25 mins approx monochrome episodes with mono audio. Optional Arabic soundtrack for episode four only.
  • Commentary – stereo. With actors William Russell and Carole Ann Ford, producer Verity Lambert OBE.
  • Remembering The Aztecs – Actors John Ringham, Ian Cullen and Walter Randall recall the production of the story and of television production in the sixties in general.
  • Designing The Aztecs – Designer Barry Newbery talks about his work on the story, illustrated with many never-before-seen production drawings and photographs from his personal collection.
  • Cortez and Monezuma – An extract from a 1970 Blue Peter, introduced by Valerie Singleton on location in Mexico, giving historical background to the Aztec belief in human sacrifice.
  • Restoring The Aztecs – A short featurette demonstrating the restoration and videoisation effects used for the release. With subtitles
  • Making Cocoa – An animated guide to making cocoa the Aztec way, voiced in character by John Ringham as Tlotoxl and Walter Randall as Tonila, with both characters animated and presented in South Park style.
  • TARDIS-Cam no.3 – The third of BBCi’s TARDIS-Cam shots.
  • Photo Gallery – production, design and publicity photos from the story
  • Easter Egg – An animated BBC Enterprises logo recovered from the end of one of the prints sold overseas.
  • Intro Sequences – The umbrella story title The Aztecs does not appear on any of the episodes, so for (outdated now) BBFC compliance a caption card with the title has been provided. To add interest, six versions have been provided, each with a different voiceover, in character, from three of the actors involved in the production. The intention is that the disc will randomly select one of these six sequences and play it out at the appropriate point.
  • PDF Material – Radio Times listings in Adobe PDF format for viewing on PC or Mac
  • Programme subtitles.

Disc 2

Galaxy 4 (dur. 64’ 43”) – a shortened reconstruction of the missing story Galaxy 4, using off-screen stills, audio recordings and animation plus the recently recovered complete episode three to tell the story.

galaxy-4-2

Chronicle – The Realms of Gold – John Julius Norwich’s superlative 1969 retelling of the story of the Spanish conquest of Mexico and the Aztecs, which also features music by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop .

Dr. Forever! – Celestial Toyroom – the first of a new five-part series introduced by Ayesha Antoine looks at Doctor Who toys. With original series producer Verity Lambert, new series creator Russell T Davies, writers Mark Gatiss, Rob Shearman, Paul Cornell and Joseph Lidster, BBC Worldwide product licensing executive Richard Hollis, product approval executive Dave Turbitt and ex- range editor Steve Cole, AudioGO commissioning editor Michael Stevens, Character Options’ Alasdair Dewar, DWM’s toy reviewer Jim Sangster and last, but by no means least, Doctor Who’s very own Winston Churchill, actor Ian McNiece.

It’s a Square World
– the very first Doctor Who skit (as far as we can ascertain), with Clive Dunn in full First Doctor costume as a scientist demonstrating his new space rocket to Michael Bentine, resulting in Television Centre being launched into space! Features cameo appearances by Patrick Moore and Albert Steptoe.

Plus…

  • A Whole Scene Going – an excerpt from a recently recovered edition of the sixties music and arts programme, featuring an interview with director Gordon Flemyng and a behind the scenes look at filming of his movie Daleks’ Invasion Earth: 2150 AD.
  • Coming Soon – a trailer for a forthcoming DVD release.
  • Radio Times Listings in Adobe PDF format.
  • Programme subtitles.

With thanks to BBC Worldwide.

The difference is the key to time had its own title on screen at the start of each episode for each story ,trial doesn’t. It just says part 2 or part 5 or whatever. Personally I don’t think it really matters

Does anyone know where some of this ‘Celstial Toyroom’ documentary parts are going to be on. I know it is to sell more DVDs, but why do they have to split documentries over several DVD releases. I bought ‘Doctor Who: The Movie: Special Editon’ earlier this year and I then found out after I have to buy ‘The Horns Of Nimon’ to watch the first part of a documentary that is split between the two. There is also ‘The Unit Family’ documentary split between ‘Inferno’ (and its Special Edition), ‘Day Of The Daleks’, and ‘Terror Of The Zygons’.

I hope they don’t put one part of this ‘Celestial Toyroom’ on the ‘Spearhead From Space’ Blu-Ray because I think that’ll be a waste of money and I’d in this case much rather have the DVD for various reasons.

    • gordon

      March 11th, 2013 - 3:13pm

The series is called doctor forever and its over 5 parts and are expected to be on 5 different special editions. First 3 are ark in space aztecs and visitation. Im guessing the other 2 are inferno and green death.

    • The Greater Intelligence

      March 11th, 2013 - 3:25pm

Thank you, I just don’t want to buy something I don’t want to finish off a documentary I’m watching. I honestly think the Blu-Ray is a ridiculous waste of time and money for other releases. Special Editions are understandable and correctly used, but Blu-Ray Special Editions are just unethical.

      March 11th, 2013 - 5:23pm

Not really worthless when spearhead will benefit with being on blu ray. It was the only story of the classic series shot completely on 16mm film thus making it the only classic story that can be realistically relased in true hd . Tv movie also could be but its doubtfull if the original film assets exist which if it doesn’t would stop it from getting remastered in hd. Based upon the Sweeny series 1 blu which was remastered by the same people and exists in 16mm film spearhead will llook briliant and miles better than the dvd. It’s not as if it

    • gordon

      March 11th, 2013 - 5:29pm

Is every story is getting released on blu. It’s only spearhead which is the only story classic story that will benefit. It’s not as if you are forced to buy either. At the end of the day its a choice

The visitation se trailer Could appear online closer to release date(possibly on doctorwho.tv) or if the ice warriors DVD contents can’t be changed it could appear on there. Ice warriors trailer should appear online in the next day or 2

Content for each DVD are locked many months before release date (normally about 4 to 6 months and sometimes much more.

Pity we’re being made to wait for the Underwater Menace episode…

Be good if a few more missing episodes turned up in a few more ‘garden sheds’ or ‘attics’. Rumours of missing episodes have been doing the rounds since my heyday collecting in the late 70s. I think there are more out there being clung onto by certain collectors….

At work a few months ago a customer I spoke to said he has about 15 minutes worth of Tenth Planet episode 4 which he had offered the BBC but they said they weren’t interested. I’ve mentioned it on these forums before and you can guess what the general response was!

    • The Greater Intelligence

      March 10th, 2013 - 11:44pm

Are you kidding me, why did they not jump on that. Did they suspect him of lying, or were they to involved in the animation that it was to late to turn a copy of it in. But still, why would he have that and what happened to it.

    • Gordon

      March 10th, 2013 - 11:54pm

Possibly the person was just winding you up. There is no way the bbc wouldnt be intrested. They are always intrested in any copies that turn up (even prints of existing episodes incase they are of better quality than the surviving prints).

      March 11th, 2013 - 10:24am

I want marco polo too. Its a great story and it needs to be found for 2 reasons, 1: to complete the first season of doctor who. 2: its a brilliant story and its the first historical story and its 7 parts! Ok i guess thats 4 resons but thats because its a brilliant story!

    • matparks08

      March 11th, 2013 - 12:01pm

I took it with a pinch of salt as it was such a no-brainer really! I even offered him money for it myself if he came back to work with it – of course he never turned up. Not only is it missing, it’s probably the MOST famous missing episode of all the Who stories. It may not feel like it, but compared to fan of other TV series of the time we are very lucky with to have the episodes we have – imagine being a fan of The Grove Family – one of the UKs first soaps – they only have 3 episodes out of 148 to watch altogether!

The Galaxy four episode is superb…. I especially noticed one scene where Maaga is talking about the destruction of the planet the light reflecting from her eyes adds quite an effect. The film has been cleaned up beautifully.
Best bit of Doctor Who Ive seen for years…Derek Martinus was clearly out to make an impression with his first Who serial.

The Aztecs is the best surviving historical story..the thing that gets me about the serial is how an earth civilisation are portrayed as being equally alien to any non terran race seen in Doctor Who – if not more so. Jacqueline Hill is the star of this one like Ian Marter one of those companions who never gets the praise she deserves….

I just have a few questions about the reconstructions.

    1) I know Marco Polo recon is on the beginnings boxset but which disc?

    2) Are Marco Polo and Galaxy 4 the only episodes reconstructed

    3) Can you understand the recons without seeing/listning to the original

      1. the edge of destruction.
      2. the ice warriors and the tenth planet as well.
      3. i suppose it depends on what you think. i prefer the audio of marco polo just because we more or less hear the whole story

The Crusade and The Moonbase were done as well for the Lost in Time DVD.

What they’re doing for Galaxy Four could and should have been a stand alone DVD and then they could have had a DVD commentary with Peter Purves and Maureen O’ Brien. A wasted opportunity. That said, can’t wait to see it.

Nice too to know that Fraser Hines has done the DVD commentary for The Underwater Menace as well as knowing a commentary has been recorded for The Moonbase a year back.

well that more or less confirms that the underwater menace and the moonbase are getting released with probably animation.

      and the crusade!

The problem with giving galaxy 4 its own release is there is too many episodes missing. If out of the 4 episodes existed there would be the possibility of a part animated release . With animation raising the bar most fans won’t accept a recon as main feature (just look at thebacklash when it looked like warriors wasn’t getting animated) which only really leaves an extra on another release. At least it didn’t end up on iTunes like it was planned at 1 time. Dan said at a recent convention that crusade wasn’t on the list but didn’t rule it out

    • josh smith

      March 9th, 2013 - 12:50pm

i would only buy a animation if its got more episdoes alive than missing so if moonbace was animated i would not buy it

so im only buying the reign of teror and the 10th planet

Pity there wasn’t a galaxy four gallery on the disc…. time the surviving rill photos were dug out cleaned up and put on a dvd…

This looks like being one of the very best dvd release – a classic Hartnell revisited, a missing episode that hasn’t been seen for nearly 50 years (with a reconstruction to ‘almost’ mae it a full story release on its own), Clive Dunn as the doctor, and not forgetting a certain coming soon trailer featuring the 2013 villains of choice – what a package! I won’t get mine till monday but won’t know where to start 😉

Air Lock and the new special features seem to make this really worth buying over the original release which I own. Clive Dunn as the Doctor sounds really interesting too!

sorry just checking will have to wait and see if it works or not if it doesn’t show up on this comment, I’ve waited so long for an Aztecs Special Edition i’ve never watched it but i’ve heard its the best William Hartnell Story and Historical Story so can’t wait! 🙂

booboo, reading your thoughts on air lock, talking hypothetically, if the animation budget was to be increased to 3 episodes would galaxy 4 be worth a ‘full’ release?

not sure, animation is great where the majority of the story is still intact so you can “complete” it as best possible

Animation can never give you back what’s lost though

Will get this in a couple of weeks after The Time Meddler when Air Lock fits into my run of existing Hartnell episodes. I’m not urgently after this episode as I saw it in December last year, though would love to see it again!

i would buy it even with having the older copy just for the extras and the definite picture quality improvement but i know how you feel, l’m worried about buying the Green Death Special Edition or not with my original copy…

    • josh smith

      March 8th, 2013 - 6:21am

yeah i mean would you rather buy a completely new episode you have never seen before or a revisit

    • Lachie

      March 8th, 2013 - 7:14am

oh i get what your sayin’ yeah i would probably think that way too besides the episodes you don’t have might be cheaper 😀 its funny because before the Mannequin Mania boxset came out i only had my original copy of Spearhead from Space and The Deadly Assassin but i really wanted Terror of the Autons!! but in the end when i bought it i preferred The Spearhead from Space Special Edition more… So my fondness for Special Edition Releases and my Classic DVD Collection basically started from there 🙂

booboo, what is your opinion on air lock, is it a good episode? and what about the recons? (also, does the recon for episode on include that 6 minute clip that was found in time to be included on the lost in time box set?).

I think many people won’t be happy they have to get a story they have already got (the Aztecs) to get have story they have not got (galaxy 4) in my inion I think they should have made a separate realese for galaxy 4

no, i haven’t got the original Aztecs, and even if i did, the visual improvement on the new release is stunning! The extra’s are fabulous as well! So i am afraid i disagree with anyone saying this. Plus this is basically a 2 in one release! For the same price as a normal DVD!

    • booboo

      March 7th, 2013 - 9:19pm

Then people would probably complain about paying £12.99 or whatever for effectively one episode, besides the picture quality is much better on this than the previous DVD

    • drjakeyoung

      March 7th, 2013 - 9:21pm

Also this is a more worthy SE release than The ark in space SE.

      March 7th, 2013 - 11:01pm

      The problems with airlock is
      1. there is no room for it on any other unreleased releases.
      2. There is not enough budget for animation
      3. There is not enough footage existing to warrent its own release
      4. Animations have raised the bar that in the opinion of the majority of fans recons are now not acceptable as a main feature on its own DVD

    • Lachie

      March 8th, 2013 - 5:21am

i think they would have released Galaxy 4 separate when the possibility for 3 episodes of animation is available and since this episode isn’t available on Lost in Time… however with the 50th and what Gordon has said i believe the best way of releasing Galaxy 4 was the way it has been handled with this release. Besides who can wait, with the 50th on right now i kind of hope they can get all surviving material out for DVD i mean its the best time!! but hey with how The Underwater Menace is going on right now its not gonna happen 🙁
