Figurine Collection Magazine Special 26 The Melkur

Available to order from www.forbiddenplanet.com

Doctor Who Figurine Collection Special 26, featuring the Melkur from the 1981 Fourth Doctor adventure ‘The Keeper of Traken’.

An ominous statue found on the harmonious planet of Traken, the Melkur was said to be a source of great evil, kept sealed in a sacred grove. In truth, it was a camouflaged form for the Master’s TARDIS, which he used to ensnare and manipulate the heir to the Keeper of Traken – and through her, the entire planet!

Withered and dying, crippled by his lack of regenerations, the Master hoped to use the powers of the Keeper of Traken to grant himself new life. His desperate search for immortality came to a climax at the end of this story, when he claimed the body of Tremas – played by the iconic Anthony Ainley.

The Melkur is faithfully rendered at 1:21 scale and accompanied by an in-depth profile magazine.

Got this today and despite being well packed, the box is absolutely trashed. Figure itself seems ok. Is it worth complaining, do Eaglemoss engage with complaints?

What a fantastic conversation to have for work! I think I recall that Kassia cleans moss from its shoulders before it comes to ‘life’ too so the remaining moss works fine for me. Fantastic character for a special – can’t wait!

Congratulations on the collection being extended again – exciting to speculate on what is still to come to cheer us collectors up. Think a Solonian Mutant and a Krarg are top of my list now…

I always champion the underdog monster and lets face it theirs quite an assortment to choose from. The one scene that always makes me laugh is The ergon entrance. The stars in their eyes moment of ‘Tonight Matthew, I,m going to be The Ergon’. Ridiculous but amusing and only in Doctor Who. Janet Fielding did the same in Resurrection ‘Tonight Matthew, I,m going to be Tegan jovanka’.

Thanks for the replys both of you.
Never made any figurines of my own before so any help is grateful. Already have the sculpting tools and some FIMO, was meaning to make Kandyman years ago.
I’d heard acrylics were best for polymer clay, always used Humbrol enamels before for painting model kits.
Was going to use FIMO as I’d heard once baked the small parts are not as brittle like with the air dried clay.
Would you recommend air dried clay then?
Also Doug Who, on this site there’s a lists section with people showing their full collections, could you post photos there?

      Also Doug,
If I go down the air drying clay route what time frame do you have before it cures, do you have to be very quick with it.
And how do you stop the rest from curing once opened.
Keep in airtight container I suppose?

    • Doug Who

      October 26th, 2020 - 1:54pm

      Hi Coleman,

I’m no expert by any means – all comes from trying sculpture in my foundation year at college!

I tend to sculpt a basic shape quickly but for these small figures even if that has dried out I just wet it and add more and it sticks fine. It takes some hours to dry completely but obviously the less clay the less time it takes. You can slow it down by wrapping in a damp cloth. I don’t know what FIMO is but if it’s similar to Sculpey I assume it will be much stronger as you bake that too but I decided to use a more traditional material.

If you use enamels I think for best results you need to prime first. The clay I use dries white so it’s easy to paint acrylic straight on.

As these are very much one-off models I use other materials, such as I shaped plastic ‘spines’ for my Foamasi bust and I’ll use thick wire to create the piston-like joints on the Kandyman. Whatever works really as it’s all painted. For me it seemed easiest to adapt another figurine rather than sculpt from scratch so I picked a Marshman as the pose mimics one of the Kandyman photos.

Hope that helps and good luck!

I’ll look into the picture posting.

Looks like there will be a few ‘Kandymen’ in due course.

      October 26th, 2020 - 3:06pm

I,m using white air drying clay and it helps like doug mentioned to use some form of wire to tackle joints, which i use when as well when building a kind of armature. Its going to be a bit tricky if you plan on moulding to accurate size especially at 11.3 cm like eaglemoss. Take your time with painting. I,m no signwriter and don,t have the steadiest of hands. Its for me, seeing other takes on this particular model and thinking i,m sure i could do as, or better. once confidence is assured i may try my hand at Helen A and fifi and other choice items i,ve got listed. The Kandyman for beginners is surely a test of endurance, thats why i plan to mould a few to get it just right. I think its seeing other peoples efforts that have got the ball rolling on this.

Another Super Sculpy user. It lasts for ages , when not being used. Allows plenty of time, for those last minute fiddles.

My Kandyman, took ages, becuase I had to roll out over 100 tiny little balls , to put on top of the under section of his head. Just to get that Authentic Liqourice Allsorts elly head. 🙂

Plus it takes next to no Time to bake. (over baking makes it brittle)

BooBoo, with your connections to this site is Their any way you can find out:-
Why, when I order from Eaglemoss, 99 percent of the time I can choose the postage option of either Royal Mail or DPD.
I always choose Royal mail as it’s much cheaper for me. But then every now and again like with the new Dalek 2 pack there’s no option. (Only DPD). Which costs a bomb.
I’m already paying well over the odds for each figure with not having a subscription, then the postage costs on top.

Orders under £15 they use royal mail, orders over that generally its DPD

Orders for delivery within the UK under £15 in total will be shipped on a standard service with Royal Mail and usually arrive within 5-7 working days once dispatched.

UK Next Day Delivery only £4.49 or spend over £50, we’ll deliver for free.

Orders for delivery within the UK (and Dublin) over £15 in total will be shipped via UK Next day delivery service with DPD. This service is available from Monday-Thursday on orders placed before 5pm and we will aim to deliver your order Next day once dispatched.

      Hi Ergon,

I’ve started on my own Kandyman now having done a few small customs. I used a Marshman figurine as the basis…coming along quite nicely but not looking forward to the detailing on the head.

      Good luck with yours!

    • the ergon

      October 23rd, 2020 - 7:17pm

what colour blue are you using for the head? I,ve gone with mid blue matte though looking at some photos it looks bright blue. I was going more on the colour of the licquorice allsort sweet.
when thats done i,m going to start on the wirrn and i,m going to work down a list of figurines i think might not get done. i,ve nothing much to lose. If eaglemoss do these eventually all the better. I,m using a load of old spare plinths from figurines i bought from the eaglemoss collection that got damaged when my old glass display cabinet collapsed due to the cold. I,m glad i hung onto them now. Mould casting these will while away a few well spent hours as a part time hobby now we are heading into dark nights and that Tier 3 lockdown where i live.

    • the ergon

      October 23rd, 2020 - 7:27pm

Doug Who, are you going to have a go at the Foamasi you mentioned above first or wait it out for the eaglemoss announcement/ figurine?

    • Doug Who

      October 23rd, 2020 - 9:44pm

      Hi Ergon,

Yes it’s a fun hobby and quite a relaxing way to spend some spare hours! Not at the painting stage yet on the Kandyman but looking at photos there seems to be a few varying shades of blue on the head so depends but a mid blue seems most accurate.

I made a bust of the Foamasi to go with my HUD busts which came out very well but might hold off making a full figure for now. Neil said although he liked the head the body was like an ‘old mattress’ so seems they won’t do one. Mind you there was enough ‘artistic license’ taken with Aggedor so I think with a bit of imagination a Foamasi figurine could look great. The Harlequin one looks really good I think.

So far the only one I’ve made from scratch is an Ogri which was fairly easy to sculpt being basically a stone! Customised others to make a Voc Robot and a ‘Revenge’ Cyberman carrying bombs. I might attempt a Krarg figurine if one isn’t done.

Wish there was a way to share pictures.

Oh and that cabinet collapse sounds like a nightmare…

    • the ergon

      October 23rd, 2020 - 10:11pm

Maybe Neil was referring to the inside of the mattress that was used to secure and arrest the rogue foamasi otherwise its just bulked up green.. And yes the cabinet incident was a nightmare, i was in bits and so were the figurines.
My next five in order Kandyman (commencing with that next week). after that wirrn, Aggedor, Sandy, fishperson and king rokon. The more trickier ones the terileptil android, gundun Robot and menoptera especially as i may have to use additional materials. others i can hold out for.

    • Doug Who

      October 23rd, 2020 - 11:03pm

That’s an ambitious list! I’m not sure my sculpting skills could do justice to the detail on a Fish Person or Rokon. It would be lovely to be able to see your figurines when they’re done.

Sorry, I misquoted Neil – he said the heads were great but that ‘their bodies are just big green sleeping bags’. I think a similar reason scuppered the Krynoid special which I always thought was a shame. Yes some monsters are better in execution than others but the Aggedor figurine bears little resemblance to how it looked on screen so perhaps a little artistic license could be used on a few occasions.

Do adore this collection and it is by far my favourite range…ever. I keep thinking how my ten year old self would be beyond excitement every month!

    • the ergon

      October 24th, 2020 - 12:13am

I know what you mean, i would have been in my element if i had these to collect when i was a kid, I used to get excited trying to collect those Weetabix cards of which i never did get the full original collection after that it was just borrowed Star wars Toys and the like never even knew about the Dapol stuff until many years later. Its as you say you can take your time doing sculpting these. I usually do two in air hardening polymer clay. one as standard and the other for the cast just in case one doesn,t turn out how i want it. I try to make the best copy and paint slowly and carefully. Once i feel they are up to standard and done a few i,ll try to post a few pictures if possible. I think i,d struggle sculpting The Krynoid as well.

Yes both of you, post some photos as soon as you can, I’d like to see them.

Both of you, post some photos as soon as you can, I’d like to see them when finished. I’ve been meaning to make a Candyman for a very long time now, especially since no company’s ever likely to make him due to copyright issues. (I’m desperate to have him in my collection).
What type of paint do you both recommend?
I’m assuming you use a type of polymer clay, so would water based acrylics be ok?
I’m in South Yorkshire, so like Ergon am in full lockdown and have decided to do abit of modelling to past the time.
Might aswell start on Candyman at last.
Going to use some FIMO, When baked I’ve heard the finish is very good, like porcelain

    • the ergon

      October 26th, 2020 - 7:47am

I,m using air hardening polymer clay and Humbrol acrylic paints for the sculpt. Coleman if you are doing ‘candyman’ make sure you soak the hook in a deep crimson Red,With the attention to detail painting the ‘Kandyman’ is going to require more patience, especially the hands and legs. Incidentally, i heard Modelling does pay well if you have the right representation. LOL.

    • Doug Who

      October 26th, 2020 - 11:16am

      Hi Coleman,

‘Candyman’ indeed – Ergon you are a kard!

I sculpt using air drying modelling clay as I find it relatively easy not just to sculpt but to carve into once it’s dry. I paint them using artists acrylics because for me it’s easier to rectify any errors and it dries very quickly. Works fine on clay but you could use a matt varnish if you wanted a more durable finish. Occasionally I use modelling enamel usually for metallic finishes.

Yes the Kandyman will be tricky with all the connecting tubes and wires and a very complicated paint job but still fun to do.

I’m not sure where we could post pictures.

There are a couple of Kandyman products out there. Harlequin did a nice 28mm gaming figure still available unpainted and Neil Sim did an absolutely beautiful Kandyman bust as part of his series but that is incredibly rare and would be hugely expensive if it ever did come up for sale.

Good luck to both of you with your modelling careers!
