Doctor Who Unbound: Doctor of War 1: Genesis

Doctor of War Rewrites History

The first of two box sets explores an alternative timeline set in the immediate aftermath of Genesis of the Daleks, in a new Doctor Who Unbound adventure from Big Finish.

“Do I have the right?” What if the Fourth Doctor had answered this question on Skaro and destroyed the Daleks once and for all? Find out in a new series of full-cast audio dramas, beginning with Doctor of War – Genesis, due for release in April 2022 by Big Finish Productions.

Colin Baker stars as an unexpected incarnation of the War Doctor – the Warrior. As he encounters familiar faces from his past, and future – Romana (Rebecca Night), the Master (Geoffrey Beevers), and Peri (Nicola Bryant) – this newly battle-ready Time Lord faces new challenges never seen before.

Doctor Who Unbound: Doctor of War – Genesis is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition CD (+ download for just £19.99) or a digital download only (for just £16.99) from www.bigfinish.com.

Times have changed. A choice was made and the universe diverged. And now all of history is at war.

One man stands at the centre of it all. But whose side is he on? Is he with the angels? Or the demons? And does anyone even know which is which?

He was a Doctor once, but now he is Doctor no more. He is the Warrior. The Doctor of War.

The three stories in this exclusive box set are:

Dust Devil by John Dorney

The TARDIS crew are on the run, pursued by an unstoppable force. But who is hunting them? And why? Will they find the answers on Aridius? Or just more questions?

Aftershocks by Lou Morgan

The ripples are spreading out. The Warrior is on trial. Or is he? No-one’s willing to tell him his crime so how can he know if he’s guilty? And who is trying him anyway?

The Difference Office by James Kettle

The Warrior is President of the Time Lords… and suffering from visions. Is he the right man to combat an invasion? Because there’s someone out there in the wilderness of Gallifrey. Someone with the Warrior’s face. And he’s heading for the Capitol.

Producer David Richardson said: “Doctor Who Unbound remains a very popular range in our back catalogue. It’s been almost 15 years since the last release in the series – in fact Masters of War was just being finished off when I joined Big Finish.

“So here we are in 2022, and Doctor Who Unbound not only gets its own relaunch but as a miniseries too – stepping through the multiverse to a different timeline where the Time War started earlier in the Doctor’s life, and a different incarnation of the War Doctor was triggered. Here the Doctor’s life changes forever during Genesis of the Daleks – and his future takes a very different track.”

Doctor of War – Genesis is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition CD (for just £19.99) or a digital download (for just £16.99) exclusively from the Big Finish website.

The second volume within this series, Doctor of War – Destiny, is set to be released in September 2022. Big Finish listeners can save money by pre-ordering both box sets together in a bundle for £38 (as a CD edition) or £33 (as a digital download).

All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mailout of collector’s edition CDs will be delayed, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

Was really intrigued by this, as I had been a huge Fan of Colin Baker’s Doctor and loved Big Finish’s Time War Audios (in fact at times I have found myself just exclusively getting any Time War based sets alongside Big Finish’s Blake’s 7 audios for my Mum.) And this doesn’t disappoint, only halfway through ‘Aftershocks’ right now and it just keeps pulling you in… can’t wait to see what happens in “Vol. 2: Destiny” later this year…

I don’t really know much about the unbound series but I’m willing to give this a try.

David Richardson clearly doesn’t pay much attention to the 100-or-so titles they release each month as he’s missed the David Warner sets completely. He should go back and give them a listen.

comment makes no sense. The warner doctor is a staple of the new adventures of Bernice Summerfield so we will likely see an announcement soon enough about this continuing.

whilst going back and exploring warners dr pre bernice would be nice, its largely explained and explored in the sets we have, we know what’s happened so better going forward then looking back

“Better going forward than looking back”
Looking back is all big finish does now

I’m getting a bit disappointed with the sixth doctor audios as I just don’t think he ‘sounds’ like the character anymore. You can tell he’s obviously a lot older now and really sounds it. Plus he does sound like he’s got false teeth or dentures which is a bit offputting

This isn’t the Sixth Doctor though. That, I think, is the point. This is the War Doctor (as played in the prime universe by John Hurt etc).

Admittedly it’s a little baffling to have someone very well known for playing the Sixth Doctor play a much more darker incarnation of the Doctor, but I suspect that that’s going to come into play in the third episode of the first boxset (with the whole “someone with the Warrior’s face is coming to the Capitol” thing).

Either that, or Colin Baker will be playing Commander Maxil for the first time in 30ish years…

Honestly, I think this is a little disrespectful to Colin baker……

The vast majority of Colins audio catalogue all take place post T.O.T.T.L and we don’t know how long his doctor actually lived – why would his voice not mature and alter? Colin and BF have voiced the “journey of the 6th doctor” and that they explore that gap.

I would point anyone to “the wrong doctors” when you hear both the 1986 6th doctor meet a much older and more mellowed “current” 6th doctor and that shows the difference, colin can still be his 1986 counterpart but his doctor is an onion that we have enjoyed peeling.

Mccoy and Colin are a little slower and deeper but all the mannerisms are there and their doctors shine. Peter Davison sounds NOTHING like he did in 1981- big finish even crowbarred in a contrivance of “oh the regeneration is making my voice change and go up and down”- really???

Even Paul Mcgann now- go listen to shada and then stranded and the two are very different voices. But I look at that as the character maturing with the actor! And im sorry but The great Tom Baker, he sounds ok but he never escaped little britain and his voice sounds somewhat staged and without the spark of his “indomitable” speech. He is deeper, older and slower, but the charm is still there.

Lets just be grateful these 60-85+ year old actors are still giving us 100% eh? Enjoy the ride while it lasts, people will only complain once there are replaced with voice artists in 5-10 years……………

This “warrior unbound” IS NOT THE SIXTH DOCTOR PEOPLE! Its a totally different iteration with a familiar face, everyone cried and cheered when “the curator” appeared, lets give the others a go at something a bit different – you might enjoy!

Unbound was an interesting series but presumably stopped as the new series was coming out and the powers that be didn’t want more new Doctors being cast. However, this version seems to have been shoehorned into the range when it probably doesn’t really fit. I am sure Colin will be brilliant in it, but not sure it’s for me – perhaps the concept could be clearer… However, I’m loving the Big Finish releases at the moment and have plenty else to look forward to this month having taken the plunge for The Annihilators and with the new 9th Doctor boxset coming soon too.

Has anyone else noticed the image of Colin is the same as the one on The Collection Season 22?

Its the “generic” colin baker image with a twist, been used on all the CD spines with BF since april 2007, the red gives it a much angrier look though. The key thing here is that his hair is dark (maybe just cause of the filter) but he has the war doctors necktie and coat on

Why is there on 3 stories in some sets and 4 in others. Like for war doctors audios had 4 and the 9th drs only 3 any reason

The War Doctor with John Hurt each box set contains 3 discs for episodes and a 4th is a behind the scenes disc for each bos set

I think they are just generally switching from 4 episode box sets to 3 episode box sets. A lot of the newer ones are 3 whilst they used to be 4, probably a cost thing. But I’m just guessing.

To be fair, the 3 discs tend to be 60-70 minutes per story/disc and is sold @ £19.99 for CD, this is vs. a 4 disc 50-55 minute per story/disc @ £22.99 per CD so whilst not a major saving, it is still money saved.

When you are pre ordering as far as 2024 – I will take every £3 saving for 30 minutes less anytime!!

Sorry, I meant a cost thing in terms of cost saving for Big Finish, not cost to the customer. I find both the 3 and 4 CD sets excellent value when they are storylines that entice me to buy.

Pre ordered just before the announcement. A welcome return to a series that was cut down in its prime. Im sure colin will bring something that will surprise us all and will kick open the door to more “unbound” stories.

It’s all getting a bit silly and repetitive at big finish now.

      and why is that??

Unbound was a fantastic and strong concept long before “flux” or “marvels what if” and the ideas were original as much as nostalgic.

This is welcome news – colin baker doctors has always had that sinister edge that was bound by “his precious moral scruples”. Gallifrey flirted with another “unbound” style 6th doctor that was essentially the valeyard and that was a tease. Here we have a situation that unlocks a whole new side of the doctor- as much as i love john hurt, he was just “the doctor” with a bit of a sulky temper, with colin we will see that FURY that we were promised but never delivered.

This is exactly what Big finish should be doing in “unbound”. The 6th doctor literally unbound in a dalek free universe – the time lord victorious the bbc again teased but did nothing with even with the books/cds.

I welcome more ideas using existing doctors, let them breath new life with no damage to continuity

This, on paper, appears to be the best thing Big Finish has announced in years. I truly miss the days when they were unbound by the tv series. Their early stuff with Paul McGann, the Unbound series, the Evelyn and Hex series, all of it remains to be beaten. Feels like their stories for the last few years are all a bit of merchandise on the side of the (in my opinion, awful) Moffatt/Chibnall eras. These stories used to matter. This looks like a return to that.

For the first time in a long time – looking forward to this!

    • February 2nd, 2022 - 5:24pm

It feels like every single release features an old villain, or a new who monster shoehorned into classic who, or an old companion coming back, or a minor character getting their own series. Big finish used to to tell new stories with new enemies with only an occasional returning character now its it’s a constant barrage of returning characters.

Im going to say something that will no doubt cause upset (honest im not trying!).

I am currently in the process of finally listening to all the doctors in chronological big finish order starting with 5 (as best can!) and I have got to say that the output of stories created during “post revival” vs “the good old days” is worlds apart and i fear rose tinted glasses for many long term listeners. Im not talking about the quality of the audio or the music etc but there’s frankly a number of those early monthly are almost…..boring. Actors hamming it up like they think they are in “timelash” and ideas that are really only 1hr dragged across 2 hrs, quite a bit of back and forth for no reason and stories and ideas that are ultimately pointless . I would say so far “primeevil” is the first one from the earlier lot that has gripped me and that is a return to traken!! But give me “iterations of I”, “cold fusion” and “forty” any day!!!

Returning characters and new series combo’s is what is bringing in the new audience that are essential. Don’t forget that 2022 is essentially a soft reboot for big finish designed to bring in NEW people. Not those like me who have 48 and rising pre orders going to 2024 lol.

A good example of this is Paul Mcgann stating many times that he felt a big difference between his doctor post “night of the doctor” and the age of listener dropping to kids and teens – that is who they want now. That means fast, action and fun stories with the recognizable villains like the new series. Also remember that yes we have seen all the old classic monster’s many times thanks to new who but those kids out there with no comprehension of “pre strax” sontarans and have no idea where pelodon is will be meeting these monster’s and planets for the first time.

Its all about remembering that the old guard who have listened for years and years are valued but frankly, big finish needs to get those young in by replicating “current” doctor who and its many styles.

@Enough letters for 2 alphabets, What If was a comics series exploring the multiverse back in the 70s, so Unbound doesn’t precede it. Also DC had a whole subset of Elseworlds series since the 80s, although these tended to be more concepts like Victorian Batman rather than What If’s divergences such as What If Phoenix Lived?

im making no claims that unbound is and original idea Rory. I am fully aware of the “multiverse” and its history.

The point was that BF had a concept over a decade ago that is now currently getting alot of media and pop culture attention so of course Big Finish would revive it. Just good business.

Multiverse as a concept outside of nerds/fandoms is something that a general audience are getting used to right now and will be the next 5 years of the MCU.
