I love watching arc of infinity, but my personal favourite is mawdryn undead. And those flashbacks for the brigadier, the five doctors is tops, especially in Dolby.
I wont discuss extras etc, because some on have to have theirs but its very exciting and adds nicely to my collection. Its worth its money in my books.

Royal Mail said mine was due Monday yesterday but it just turned up early today and the set is in absolute Mint condition.

Maybe they learned from the Season 2 fiasco or I just got lucky this time (quality wise). Although I did immediately drop disc 1 but luckily there’s still not a single mark on it 🙂

Excited to get dug in now. Hopefully everyone gets a perfect set and enjoys it

I don’t really care for that artwork at all. The colors look nice and really pop, but it doesn’t reach out and grab me. Plus I would have prefered either Ten, Eleven, or Twelve on the front, or better yet all of the modern Doctors.

Love the look of the sets. Look like NewWho versions of The Collection.

Hopefully we get a Moffet Era set like the 1-4 RTD Era set coming out. But maybe have to be a 2 part set (5-7 +50th and 8-10).

Would prefer this instead of The Collection doing each NewWho season if they do do them.

Prof. Would this be the odd clips from power of the Daleks, eps 3 and 2 from g4 and uwm, and 9 eps from enemy and Web? Or the same set with all above added?

Someone had suggested somewhere about a set with all the current animations on.

D84. Hope they do a Moffat Era after that. Series 5-10 plus 50th.

    • Gordon

      September 14th, 2023 - 5:08pm

Peter Crocker mentioned back in July that he had at least 2 blu ray projects to deliver this month so it would suggest we might be getting at least 2 announcements between now and the anniversary. One is probably a collection set and the other is probably an animation or a special edition of sort (an unearthly child maybe with it being the 60th).

    • Prof Horner

      September 14th, 2023 - 6:02pm

Well James I meant full episodes that may have been recently recovered and released on a Lost in Time 2 boxset. As I said in my dreams . But I will be happy with season 6 13 ,16 or even 15 , in that order, next. I am about to start watching Time Flight, having worked my way through season 19 in readiness for season 20, which will hopefully come Sunday or Monday. Season 19 is in my opinion the best eighties season . But I am ready to be surprised by season 20 and Peter Davison is the best of the eighties Doctors by far . Not forgetting the lovely Sarah Sutton in the first four stories.

Look, good on Ian for actually putting his money were his mouth is, but this isn’t for me I’m afraid. Sorry.

    • Gordon

      September 11th, 2023 - 9:27pm

Except he’s only putting 10 percent (2k) of the money where his mouth is. The other 90 percent (18k) is other people’s money.

It’s hard to really judge this because in 1 respect it’s a fan project but on the other hand ian is expecting people to pay £100 minimum for it. If it was a free thing on the internet it would be fine. However it isn’t. It really needs to be better. A lot better. Ian has hyped this up to be better than the abominable snowman animation but it’s nowhere close at present. Looks way too basic and the movement is a bit jerky and minimal. Underwater menace looks and moves better than this and a copy is a 5th of what Ian is asking.

It supposedly is costing 20k from “a professional animation team” and all it seems to be is traced images from the loose cannon recon with basic hand/head/mouth movement filling in the blanks inbetween. I always questioned how it’s only costing 20k for the full thing as a professional animation team would cost at least 25k minimum per episode. Having seen this it’s because clear as the animation is basic as they come.

If it was on YouTube for free I would say fair play it looks decent and it’s better than nothing but for £100 na it looks like a £10 on discount sort of release.

Also yesterday Ian was attacking a 12 yr old kid and his Grandad on Facebook. Lovely chap

    • Who is who?

      September 12th, 2023 - 1:04pm

BBC professional animations cost around six figures and I would rather pay £20 for a blu ray from them. This is just awful, like something from South Park. I would also add that I feel legally he’s sailing close to the wind producing a BBC project and taking money for it. He might say £100 goes towards an animation, but it could these people are working for free and he’s pocketing the lot!

    • Gordon

      September 12th, 2023 - 1:37pm

Well ian is livid that the clip leaked. He called a rejected first clip then called it a rejected 2nd clip. Calling it a betrayal and and copyright theft ironic considering his clip has bbc copyright material on it. However he’s refusing to put out a clip as he said he’s not going to be bullied into it

    • Rex Farrel

I see I’m not the only person who was reminded of a certain pirate captain… Like almost everyone else on the planet who knows of him I used to laugh along and mostly see Ian as a source of jokes (and he didn’t half make it easy!), but now I just find the whole situation very sad.

    • Gordon

      September 12th, 2023 - 6:33pm

Apparently these questions were “too personal” for him to answer

      1) Who is animating this project?
      2) Why isn’t this being handled through a proper
      Kickstarter/crowdfunding service?
      3) What recourse is there for those who donate if the project falls apart? What guarantees are there that it won’t?
      4) Why are you being charged so much to send any sum of money?

This project is fishy in all kinds of levels.

    • Gordon

      September 13th, 2023 - 7:54am

From the trailer it looks amazing. I do suspect with it being Warner brothers and them having an animation studio structure set up and shorter 70 odd minutes of animation runtime I suspect the budget for it will be many times higher than any of the doctor who ones. I watched an interview with Gary Russell that he did for time scales. He mentions doing an Australian cartoon in the 2010s and the budget for one 20 odd minute episode was more than the whole of fury from the deep combined

    • Pete X

      September 10th, 2023 - 4:48pm

Probably pseudo-animated sketches/drawings – no animated movement, walking, speaking, etc but static backgrounds overwhich static characters are placed and are focused into/out from to indicate character and/or camera movement.

    • James

      September 10th, 2023 - 7:31pm

Got to be animated then. No choice. Only the 3 Troughton stories left (space, wheel and highlanders) so why no just animate them.

    • Gordon

      September 10th, 2023 - 9:59pm

They will probably base it on the loose cannon recon. It will most likely be an updated version of that

    • Bob

      September 10th, 2023 - 11:31pm

If photo composites aren’t possible then probably just the soundtracks with narration. They could also go for a more hand-drawn approach like with Death Comes to Time, Real Time and the 8th Doctor version of Shada.

    • D84

      September 11th, 2023 - 8:59am

I imagine in the best way they can

Its not on the list of rumoured animations and even if it was you’d think there would be a gap of a couple of years to allow a new animation to sell as a solo product before then being included in a boxset – so animation is out of the question I this point I suspect.

Its not a story I am overly precious about so it doesn’t make a lot of difference to me (controversial I know) – ill be happy with whatever they do with it – even if that’s largely audio only

Perhaps I’m just being contrary, but Space Pirates is a story I’d really like to see animated. The ‘telesnaps’ (or lack thereof) version is difficult for me to follow personally, so I think it has the most to gain from animation. As much as I’d LOVE to see Masterplan animated, that’s a story I can follow fine with much of the excitement intact.

    • Prowl 1701

      September 12th, 2023 - 10:49pm

I’d love space pirates to get animated, I think there is a lot of potential for an animation team to take advantage of there. The novel is actually a really good read. The surviving episode 2 is a nice watch. It’s just the recon that’s hard to get through. The story itself is actually good.

I’ve not listened to the podcast yet, but bearing in mind that the picture can at the BBC contained a sound negative, and the BFI held a can labelled as containing a sound negative (“not yet examined”), it wasn’t really rocket science to assume they’d been swapped over… I’d always thought they’d already looked, because it was such an obvious thing to do. So the lesson would appear to be that we should never presume that people have done the obvious – or what we consider obvious. (I could have told them when the catalogue first went online to the public, because it was one of the first things I checked!)

@prof Agreed. These sets are a labour of love from all concerned, and we should be grateful for all of the hard work that goes into making these the most complete versions of any series out there.

I certainly appreciate everything that we have, and look forward to what’s to come. Even (especially) S25.

Was neat hearing Peter confirm that season 20 was suppose to come sooner, but covid happened and it kept getting delayed. Work was started on five doctors in 2019 becaused the updated effects were already planned and needed time to get made, and he was working on the rest of season 20 even in 2020.

So what are you all excited about most of all in the season 20 boxset? For me it’s the 40th anniversary edition of the five doctors, I want to see the updated effects and how good the location work looks in HD. Also really excited for behind the sofa, as I always enjoy those, and arc of infinity, as I’ve been wanting to watch it again.

Watching the stories themselves, 40th Anniversary Five Doctors, Behind the Sofa, the road trips, audio commentaries, Real HD footage and I’m very interested in the studio footage too. Basically could be summed up as everything haha 🙂

What I’m not looking forward to is having to return and replace the set 100 times till I get a good set like I had to do with Season 2 (also 9 discs) in particular. Eeek especially as it may sell out haha

Looking forward to all the stories/episodes with updated special effects, the omnibus editions, behind the sofa, and of course the new documentaries. It’s going to prove itself as another fantastic set. I’m hoping and praying we get one more this year. Fingers doubly crossed.

Jake E. Totally agree, I have had to return a few sets now due to Amazon packaging being hit and miss. If only I didn’t have vouchers to use.

When I look at this via my amazon app it tells me “800+” bought in the past month, although i’m sure when i have looked at it previously it told me “2k+” bought in the past month – that was a couple of weeks ago I think – so depends on their time frame of what “the past month” is

Similarly – UWM Animation Steelbook shows “2k+” bought in the past month – which I think given its only been available for pre order for about a month is pretty good

For S20 – given it contains The Five Doctors its bound to be a good seller – its a well regarded anniversary story (although as with most of Who not without its flaw’s)

When this arrives in 2 weeks time it will make 14 sets on the shelf with 12/13 yet to come – looking forward to the day I can stand and appreciate the awesomeness of “The Collection” in its entirety on the shelf, and watch them all (again) in order start to finish

D84 is this the final ever sets or will they do 4k 3d ltimate collectors limited edition in years down the line? Lol

    • Gordon

      September 6th, 2023 - 11:45am

Wouldn’t pay too much attention to that. Probably just trying to push last minute pre orders. Even if it was you will still get it on release date from other retailers.

As for James question I don’t really see it. There really isn’t any room for improvement by going to 4k for season sets plus the additional scanning costs would make it unviable. Might get the odd story that is predominately film on 4k. Spearhead, shada 5 doctors and maybe the recent animations but outside of that nah

    • D84

      September 6th, 2023 - 11:46am

@James – fair point. I’ve already bought every available story at least twice (VHS and then DVD) and now all again on Blu Ray – so if these come out again in 4k or whatever the next “standard” is after that – yep I dare say ill be buying those too lol

Yes, D84 it said 2,000 a month ago and now 800+ which could mean they’ve sold almost 3000 copies since July 27th on Amazon alone! Only 12 days till it’s released, exciting! 🙂

Boo-boo you are correct I remember now that it said 6,000 then 2,000 and now 800+ so yeah something like 9,000 sold on Amazon right now and based on the rumours of roughly 10,000 getting made (Maybe they’ve made more for this set I’ve no idea) then it would make sense that HMV has almost run out!

Just another repackaging it looks like. Only 5 years since they last repackaged them into a complete set and even then it was just reused discs from the original 2004-2006 DVDs with new labels on them. Even if it doesn’t get a blu ray release a remaster is very much needed. Looks really bad compared with doctor who on DVDs that are from the same time period.

Series 2 has really terrible noise reduction, the worst I’ve seen on a BBC title. If people’s arms and legs start disappearing in a simple shot of characters walking right to left, you really should be thinking about turning the dial down…

I think we can speculate all we like, it will be what it will be.

As others have suggested before – unlikely to be S3 or S4 – still some work to do there to fill in multiple gaps. S5 or S6 – possible if they are going with 1 missing story represented by stills – same with S1.

We’ve had a set from Doc 3 and 5 this year – so unlikely to be those – that leaves Tom and Slyv so basically could be any from S1, S5, S6, S13, S15, S16 or S25.

I would take a guess though at S13 / S15 or S16 as we have not had a Tom set for almost 2yrs – but equally could be a Troughton set so S5 or S6

    • Prowl 1701

      August 25th, 2023 - 4:43pm

It makes me think of 13 or 6. I’ve always figured 13 would have a neutral color or maybe a red/orange, but tans and browns have been a strong color choice I’ve mentioned for it in videos before. I always figured 13 would be the last Tom Set but this really makes me think of 13 far more than 15 or 16. I always figured 15 would be green or yellow and that 16 would be the key to time color, like the dvd set.

Could be season 6, I think the 60’s seasons will have more on a monotone color like 2 mostly does. Plus the sepia color would fit for an old time black and white season. I can easily picture a season 6 set with this color in my head. And we know they are working on season 6 as bts has been filmed for mind robber.

So my guess is 13 or 6.

    • Basil Funkenstein

      August 25th, 2023 - 7:46pm

I reckon we’ll see an announcement trailer for the next season either the beginning or middle of October with the release date either middle of December or early January. I doubt they’d want to release it the week of Christmas or just after but that is a possibility.

As for the next set, I can see biege and cream working for 6 and 13 but I personally think it’ll be season 16. I’m hoping it isn’t because I agree with Prowl. I much prefer the more brighter lilac purple that they used for the special edition dvd boxset and I’d want that colour on the season 16 collection set but we did just get a purple set, albeit a darker purple, on season 9 and season 20 has a sort of pink-purple blend colour on it alongside the blue so another purple colour set seems unlikely, which is maybe why Lee has chosen beige and cream.

They could throw a curveball our way and release either 5, 6, or 13 as I do think this colour combination would suit those seasons. I’d prefer a green for season 5 but the sepia tone could work, it would also go with 6 and 13 as well.

I guess we’ll, hopefully, find out soon enough.

    • Basil Funkenstein

      August 25th, 2023 - 7:54pm

      My colour choices for seasons 5, 6, 13, 15, and 16.

5 – A light/middle green. Nothing too dark. Maybe a lighter seaweed colour.
6 – A dark blue or a deep purple. Different to season 9. Maybe a sort of midnight navy blue or maroon burgundy purple.
      13 – Either brown, tan, beige,.and cream or red/orange.
15 – Middle to dark green or orange/yellow.
16 – Lilac purple. Same as the special edition dvd boxset.

    • Prowl 1701

      August 25th, 2023 - 8:20pm

Actually, thinking about it, the color makes me think of the Tom baker intro that was used a couple times early in his run, where the intro is a more gold/sepia color instead of the usual silver. That actually matches up really well imo, the 13 boxset could have the opening credits tine vortex from the early part of his intro, also used in the closing credits, as opposed to the diamond part used for the season 12 boxset. Thinking on it, that would really make sense. So I’m thinking either 13 or 6.

Lee tends to use purple/magenta/violets in several boxsets also including sesson 24, 12, and 18, so I still think using the lilac color for 16 makes more sense than this color.

    • Basil Funkenstein

      August 25th, 2023 - 8:41pm

I agree Prowl. It doesn’t really strike me as a 6 colour, like I said I envisioned 6 being more dark blue or dark purple, but I do see this working if used as a sepia tone on 6. I’d be happy with that. It also works as a season 13 look but I’m shocked to think they’d do season 13 this early. I guess maybe they’re thinking that it’s a 60th anniversary year and it makes sense to release the most popular Tom season? Who knows..?

I’m just so ridiculously excited to find out what will be next. Whatever season it is I’ll be happy.

    • Prowl 1701

      August 26th, 2023 - 3:16am

Well that’s true, Gordon. Sometimes the colors used on the boxset really fit, like the purple on season 9, but other times i don’t know where Lee came up with them from. Like the magenta and blue for season 20, i wouldn’t have thought of those colors for it, but it works so well with the art.

I could see it also for season 15 maybe as it makes me think a bit of the color of the Fendahl’s final form. If it’s for season 16 I will be unhappy as I really want the lilac color.

But if turns out to be 13 I will be equally pleased. As 13 is probably the greatest season of the seventies and arguably the from the greatest production team. It’s not going to be 25. Too soon for another 80s set. Anniversary year or not.

Chris chapman mentioned on twitter that he is currently planning a season overview and has at least 25 people he has on his wishlist. Too many people to be for season 1. Season 3 was covered in the last chance saloon documentary. The Troughton era was covered in second time around. The Pertwee era was covered in doctor who and the third man. Serial thrillers covers the Hinchcliffe era. A matter of time covers the Williams era. Come in number 5 and trials and tribulations pretty much covers season 21. Only really leaves season 25 which doesn’t have a season overview. Suspect it won’t be out till next year though as he’s planning to film it in September

I like the idea of 13 having his highland outfit on, it would be nice to see, I would be very surprised if it isn’t 16 but here’s hoping it is also magenta bright purple lilac tones and hues 🙂

The colours make me think it could be 25 as it is an anniversary year just didn’t think they would put two eighties next to each other given that leaves only 21, could do though

I don’t think we will get a Hartnell Troughton or obviously Davison or Pertwee, so makes me think
      13, 15, 16, 25

Unless it is a complete curveball as it is brown for the mcgann tardis?

Have the Movie, night and power of the doctor, shada, doctor who am I documentary, all the extras from the multiple releases of the movie, confidential thing for night of the doctor, behind the sofa with 7th and 8th docs, Eric and maybe the 2 companions, walkabout documentary in San fran with writer, director and 8th Doc.

As the colours teased by Lee for the next set seem simple – it could be a muted palette for a B&W set – sounds like S6 may be the next B&W set people are expecting

Could be anything though – I’m in for them all anyway, hoping we see something before year is out

    • Sofia Fox

      August 28th, 2023 - 12:08am

I know we’re all speculating what season it could be, but my friend noticed that there were two months between Lee revealing the colours of the next Collection set and the announcement of that Collection set. Season 9’s colours were revealed in November 2022, announced January 2023. Season 20’s colours were revealed in May, revealed last month, and now we have the next season’s colours so it seems sure this next set will announced in October, presumably for a Christmas release.

James: yeah that’s what I meant but didn’t type, a wilderness one, would kind of expect that either in 2026 or right at the end though
All of those ideas sound great for a wilderness set, in fact that could have sooooo much on it!

D84: I know what you mean about muted pallet, I just didn’t think they would do two big sets in a row, 20 and then a 60s?! We shall see but I agree with the one time outfit thing though

Sofia: that’s a really interesting point, I think it, after a third time, will probably become a stable rule hereafter, let’s hope October!

Primord: I think it will be toms last possibly, but not overall, I personally think wilderness will be last – I think that sadly he may not be with us but they will have and are preparing stuff for it already, they would be able to tribute him properly whatever happens, no doubt if everything is released, the next set will feature a tribute to him, bless him, he is doing very well for 90 almost

      Matthew: I’d love 25

    • D84

      August 28th, 2023 - 6:28pm

@DPHill hmmm indeed – I had not considered that angle (2 big sets together) it may not be S6 in that case

All things considered I think it will be a Tom set but also given the above consideration – it could indeed be S25 as that’s a shorter season to work on you’d think.

Only 4 stories – likely to have extended editions of all 4 (given how the other later sets have been handled) and a wealth of existing extras that don’t need that much clean up

Hmmm, I wonder – will it be “Unlimited Rice Pudding etc etc!!!!

Just had a thought. Lee only revealed the teaser because it was his birthday. Might not be because the artwork is in the same position production wise as the season 20 teaser. Reading the dwm article about the making of the season 20 teaser and it was only recorded a month before reveal. I would say that would be more of a factor of it being revealed when it was than the artwork being teased on a certain date

Well it will be what it will be. It’s great to think that there may be three releases this year.
I’m way late to the party – still working my way through Season 2.
And surprised how much I like ‘The Romans’. Despite the poor episode endings, it’s a refreshing piece of work, totally unlike anything else that season, and nice to see WH’s Doctor in a more humorous light.

26 days until season 29 is arriving (hopefully). So less then 4 weeks for a new announcement or just over 4 If they wait until this one has been released.

Smugglers also awaiting a official announcement.

Hopefully highlanders gets done before season 4 collection is released. Unless they do it with 1 per season (highlanders s4, wheel s5 and pirates s6). If it does go this way we’ve had crusade for s2 and s1 be Marco polo (be shame as 1st season).
But which 1 for s3. If rumours true about toymaker that would leave myth, massacre and savages all 4eps, mission could use uni version, and DMP with 9 eps.
Which 1 would be left out? (Hopefully they animate the 3 and maybe just animate the missing 9 from DMP, unless they remake it like Uni did woth mission? There’s hope)

I think i would be happy with 1 Telesnap reconstruction for Season 6 (Pirates) and Season 4 (Highlanders) but for S5 – Wheel is a guilty pleasure of mine – would love to see that animated – seems such a perfect fit of a story to be animated is all.

Not heard anything re Smugglers animation at this point but UWM turned out to be true to am hopeful that one will too

I think Season 3 will be near the end of the run – if not the last one to come out, bar a potential wilderness years set – which i can see them leaving until also towards the end to mop up any bits and bobs displaced from DVD’s with no other natural home – or to include anything that may be un earthed over the next couple of years.

Over the next half a dozen sets i can imagine we’ll get some of (basing this on nothing other than my own wants and thoughts) S1, S6, S15, S16, S21, S25.

S3 clearly needs alot of work – and potentially animations to fill in lots of gaps
S4 – Still 1 more animation to confirm and release individually (plus UWM) to make a viable product with 1 story represented by stills
S5 – potentially viable now but i can see them holding out for animation on Wheel – they already did a 10 minute teaser
S7 i expect needs alot of colour restoration work
      S11 as above
S13 i can see them holding back just because its a good one

I still think season 5 will be the only sixties season to be complete for Boxset. If Wheel in Space is animated next year or early the following year. Then season 5 could be released complete in 2026.
I think your reasoning is sound D84 regarding the up coming release schedule. I hope 6 is next after 20 . But 13 , 16 or even 15 will be great. Only just over two weeks to go for 20!

    • DPHill

      September 1st, 2023 - 1:34am

Gordon – you could be right about it not following the same as the last two, and i do think the artwork has a lot of work already ready for whenever one is close to the surface of release – i remember Lee saying he has done a lot of editing for a set he knows won’t even be out for a three or four years at least

it would be really nice to get a smugglers announcement soon! i am not sure if highlanders will be done in time, i feel eventually it will get done in time, but that is probably low down given they may continue like with s2 and have one story a season not fully animated – although if there are no episodes from the story, I really do not know how this will be easily represented in terms of content other than the obvious telesnaps stuff
I feel like s5 may get wheel cos it has not only a companion introduction but the cybermen too! would eb a shame if marco polo was not animated or dare i say anything recovered from it such that s1 remains with seven big gaps in it

i would be happy with one missing per season if it helped, but also, I would, if they got momentum again, just start with the modern run to give more time – i know things don’t work so easily and cohesively as that though

    • DPHill

      September 1st, 2023 - 1:44am

D84, i really agree on you for s5, as it is a guilty pleasure of mine, feels like they are not gonna get everything animated in time, but I have hope we may get lucky for one maybe even two seasons – this seems most likely!

season 4 is becoming ever more viable, and season 6 already is

for special features contributors, i know they don’t necessarily need people to be alive – but it sure helps and is nice for us fans, s7 and s11 i guess they will use John Levene and Katy Manning despite neither having Katy – she is always so interesting and keen on anything Pertwee, and Benton was in them, he is the only one more able to do them – unless we are lucky enough that they did a richard franklin in conversation with a few years back for s11 – hope we get one for Benton on s7

s4-6 has the wonderful frazer hines, who i cannot wait to see more of again on the sets as he has been a lil more absent than I like, also anneke and wendy would be great to see again as they both seem to have a great energy!

s3 personally, not Purves’s greatest fan but he is always keen, and I guess there are still a number of behind the scenes people (richard martin and waris hussein) and also Carole for season 1

I feel like s13 is the most difficult set for involving the old members, only hinchcliffe, a very old tom, john levene, and a very old gabriel woolf are still around – dont think any writers or directors from this season are alive anymore sadly

how do you think they will work around this? i know they have the main features and all of the special feaures, but for new features other than behind the sofa?

      September 1st, 2023 - 2:51am

I hope they animate wheel. I figure it would sell well, it’s a cybermen story and it introduces Zoey. Even if it’s not the most popular storywise.

    • James

      September 1st, 2023 - 7:45am

If wheel gets animated because it’s zoes introduction ep. Then highlanders has to also as its Jamie’s introduction.
Unless they only animate eps that they know do not exist. And the ones they know are in private hands they can someomhow come to arrnagentns with the holders.

    • D84

      September 1st, 2023 - 4:08pm

I can see more ease in animating Wheel as it’s a base under siege story and a limited cast of characters – plus v little tartan to animate.

That seems to have been defining factors on previous animations so to me it still fits that bill.

Now Highlanders with various backdrops, characters etc and the obvious “flowing tartan” in the wind – very tricky

Well I have just got my copy of DWM 594 in my local Morrisons. Just read the preview of season 20 blu ray. It has only just struck me how all the extras on this Boxset will be new to me. As apart from The original Five Doctors DVD, which has no extras on it. I don’t have any the stories from this season on DVD. Apart from the fact I looking forward to watching these stories I haven’t seen in very long time. It will probably take till ( hopefully in December) the next season Boxset to get through all the wonderful extras. The only question is which version of The Five Doctors will I watch first?

Yes in the summer of 1984 . As I remember rightly they showed The Awakening as well. It was the last time they showed repeats on BBC 1 until Planet of the Daleks in 1993.

      August 24th, 2023 - 3:00pm

They repeated The Kings Demons as well. I missed it first time but watched and recorded it on a BASF audio 90 tape. We didnt even have a VCR until about late 84-early 85. So just taped near the Tv. Everyone had to be totally silent as i was recording. Ha, ha. The onl6 problem on some were the continuity announcements on some at the end. Announcing of all things Jimll fix it. So edited those out afterwards.

It wasn’t all that long when Lee was teasing the colours for the “next set” last time before it was confirmed and details put out etc for S20 was it?

Would anyone like to see modern Doctors who were classic fans growing up do behind the sofa or at least appear on some of these collections?

I’d love Peter Capaldi on some 60’s sets and David Tennant on some 70’s and even Season 21. Maybe on behind the sofa?

I even liked seeing Moffat and Gatis on that documentary a while back (not sure of Season). Get them back on along with RTD as we are running out of sets now.

I’d rather these than the usual Davison group slagging off older classic who as it’s not like theirs.

Having seen the full disc breakdown all I can say it’s bloody massive. In terms of size it probably is the biggest set yet. Five doctors and it’s special features takes up 3 discs alone plus some of the extras from kings demons is also five doctors related. I see the messages from space feature filmed at jodrel bank from that free doctor who magazine dvd a few years back has found a home on one of the five doctors discs. Doesn’t really fit there being honest but it’s nice for people who missed it to finally be able to see it.

You’re a miracle worker, Gordon, many thanks. I’m surprised Enlightenment is only one disc as it has three versions of the story on it and a slew of extras. So the only updated effect for snakedance is the snake at the end, like kinda?

    • Gordon

      August 18th, 2023 - 4:42am

Technically enlightenment is only 2 versions as its new cgi effects are done by branching.

I assume snakedance is like kinda with it just the snake updated

Wow, this looks good. Tons of new broadcast extras on king’s demons and the five doctors, this is going to be an amazing set. It’s a bit weird that let’s go Dutch is on the final five doctors disc rather than arc of Infinity but maybe they reference the look who’s driving so had to put them together. Plus interesting why there is a Bonnie Langford Saturday superstore on arc of Infinity when it’s way before her involvement in who. It’s going to be difficult to decide what to watch first, so many new features I’m looking forward to. Thank you Gordon for posting this

I don’t think I’ve had any DW pre order item come early since possibly The Faceless Ones Steel book – maybe Fury, but its as far back as that.

I’m on series 16 on my complete run now; got to say best of The Williams years by far, and I think the best Tom series after the Hinchcliffe Holmes era

Great chemistry with Tom, Mary and K9 – Tom starting to go a little over the top but nowhere near series 17 levels it’s still a brilliant performance. The stories are great fun even Kroll and Armageddon factor are decent. It’s got some hilarious lines it throughout, it’s fun, exciting and absorbing all the way and it has aged well

If it is next as many predict I welcome it, although I would prefer 25 as that would help me out with the chronology of my run if it comes out at Christmas

Somebody (Most likely Gordon) posted on here that they had been filming something for Stones of Blood recently.

    • D84

      August 16th, 2023 - 11:22pm

      Hmmmm, indeed Bobby.

I can see the login in suspicion, it is 2yrs since we had a Tom set – so you can see one of them being next as still 3 to go. But in the same vein, we do not yet have a Troughton set – and 3 to go on those, although all more problematic than any of Tom’s. We had a Bill set late last year so unlikely to see S1 soon – plus i cant see S3 coming anytime soon either, likely at the very end if not the last “Collection” to come out surely,

Jon and Pete’s had a set this year so unlikely to be them again. Slyv – 1 left, and its a good one (steady everyone – we all have different tastes) – might keep that back a bit.

So yes would lead us to a Tom set i agree, but after the delays we’ve had a last year’s “2 sets” – are we confident the pattern and pace has picked up enough to bring us back to 3 sets within a calendar year?

    • Bobby Fackrell

      August 17th, 2023 - 7:49am

Yes but something being filmed for Stones of Blood and not having a Tom set for two years are not specific leads they are educated guesses. No one knows what is following 20 for sure but there are a handful of strong possibilities and 16 is among them

    • Anonymous

      August 17th, 2023 - 8:15am

Exactly. That’s why Season 16 is ‘predicted’ to be next. Nobody but the team working on these sets knows for sure (if even they do).

    • Prof Horner

      August 17th, 2023 - 8:49am

I certainly not against season 25 coming out. Just let’s have a another Tom and specially the first Pat. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait six months after season 20 for 16 or whatever, as has been the case between 9 and 20.

    • Gordon

      August 17th, 2023 - 9:44am

Apparently they did filmed something at the stones of blood location back in December of last year however I never really heard anything more than that. Mind you I think they are at the stage with the amount of content they are banking and seem to have built up that they could be working on things years off that no season is off the table at this point. Chris chapman has stuff filmed that won’t see the light of day till 2025. The range only has about 4 years left. Back in 2018 they filmed a William Russell interview that didn’t get released till December 2022. Safe to say that it’s possible they are doing filming for pretty much any of the remaining seasons. Even ones not due till 2027. Even if they don’t know when something is out or in order of release when they film something I’m sure they know or can figure out what is the next 1 or 2 sets are especially if they have deadlines to do hand in. Toby hadoke recently filmed something and he didn’t even know what season it was for or when it’s out. He also said on a recent podcast that he knows what is the next set is because he’s in it but he said it wasn’t connected to anything he filmed recently

The randomiser is a cope out surely if the Black Guardian can track the TARDIS he can do with with or without knowing the coordinators, just a very short lived reason to try and go back to the glory days when they didn’t know where they were going which is ironic because series 17 is mostly rubbish

    • James

      August 11th, 2023 - 4:56pm

I’d say season 16 as its more of a proper season 1 big story arc for a big anniversary year. 15 just odd stories. Then a Troughton one early 2024. Unless their secretly animated wheel of pirates going to be recon for those seasons. Shame as possible be the only 2 for Troughton not to be animated. (if they do do highlanders, if not be 1 on each season not fully visual). Won’t be 4 as UWM being released in November so be 2025 I guess for season 4.

    • Pete X

      August 11th, 2023 - 5:09pm

      @James

I’d much prefer they animated Space in Space than Wheel of Pirates 😉

With today’s announcement of Underwater Menace I think Wheel in Space is very likely to be animated, there being more visual and acting reference to go on than the Highlanders or Space Pirates.

    • Prowl 1701

      August 11th, 2023 - 9:10pm

Space pirates could really benifit from animation, especially if they took some liberties like with Macra terror. The target novel of space pirates is actually a good read.

    • Prof Horner

      August 11th, 2023 - 9:34pm

      @Pete X
I would think The Wheel in Space is almost a certainty. It is the last Cybermen story not to be released. I should say we may see it animated next year. Giving it couple of years to stand alone before season 5 is released on blu ray box set. Probably in 2026.

    • Gordon

      August 12th, 2023 - 9:14am

I think space pirates will get done but it will be a couple of years after the season 6 release. Just think the likes of the smugglers, toymaker, wheel, the savages, highlanders (if they can figure it out) and perhaps myth makers are probably in front of the que

    • Prof Horner

      August 12th, 2023 - 10:06am

Agreed Gordon. I think The Smugglers and The Wheel in Space will probably done first. After that they will consecrate on season 3 stories.

Prof..with 21 episodes still missing/not in bbc hands, would they do all the work, animate and restore it for The Collection Season 3 release first then as standalone stories a few years later? Not counting mission as the uni remade version could be used instead of animating as it be would have more money to spend on animating the other stories and just add the audio as an extra to the set. Or maybe use them and redo dmp to the same standard as its a huge story.

    • Gordon

      August 12th, 2023 - 3:13pm

@james the budget for the collection sets are tiny compared to the animation budgets. The budget simply isn’t there to animate stories in the collection range. Any animations would need to be released separately first on its own to recoup costs long before it appears in the collection sets. Most likely telesnap reconstructions where required will fill in the non animated gaps

    • James

      August 12th, 2023 - 3:30pm

Gordon..seems a shame not to animate the missing gaps so then this is the definitive collection with all eps represented fully visually in a set.

    • Gordon

      August 12th, 2023 - 8:27pm

Problem is they can’t be included if they don’t already exist. If the definitive version of the episode that is a telesnap version then that is the version that will be included. Sucks but there are no guarantees that everything will be animated for the collection range. I mean season 2 is already out and crusade hasn’t been animated. The collection range has 4 years left. There are still 11 stories that need animated. Some stories (masterplan/Marco polo) will take 2 years min to do. They won’t all get done in that time frame.

    • Prowl 1701

      August 12th, 2023 - 10:15pm

Don’t think we will see season 3 or 4 in the collection range for a long while, there is time to animate stories from them and release them separately first. I figure the next 60’s set will be 6.

    • Prof Horner

      August 13th, 2023 - 8:51am

I think season 6 will be next sixties season.(before 25 Bobby!) Season 1in 2025 . Then season 5 in 26 , 4 in 27 and finally 28. Giving time to animate most of season 3. I kind of hope someone is working on Daleks masterplan right now,in time to release it in November 2025 , in for its 60th anniversary. Interestingly The Savages may miss out on animation,I think as I think it is the only story with a complete set of tele snaps. From that season. Although I think it will be animated. So they could release season 3 with all other missing stories animated except that one. In the end I think only season 5 will be only sixties season released as complete season on Boxset. as Gordon says James there won’t be any animations exclusively for Boxset. An interesting few years I think.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      August 13th, 2023 - 9:04am

But Prof this is about a potential final release this year maybe December which would make 25 a much more likely contender as it’s much shorter, especially with 20 being such a big box set, 6 will be huge, 25 is also an anniversary year

Personally I’m not sure there will be another this year after 20. 25, 6 and 16 do seem to be in the mixer though

    • Auton

      August 13th, 2023 - 10:08am

Season 16 is almost certainly next, season 25, while only being 4 stories, will still be a huge box set due to it being an 80s set and packed fully of surviving studio, location and broadcast footage and new extended versions of all the stories. Season 16 has less so despite having more stories will be quicker to release making it perfect for the end of this year

    • Pete X

      August 13th, 2023 - 11:37am

There have been nine* full story animations in the seven years between the release of Power of the Daleks in 2016 and the likely release of Underwater Menace this year.

Despite the loss of funding in 2021(?) there have been either one or two full animated releases every year except 2018.

There are eleven** missing episode stories remaining that could be animated if resources are available. On the release rates so far it will take six to ten years to complete the remaining animations.

If all eleven stories are animated, then the last of them will most likely be completed after the release of the Seasons 1, 3-6 box sets and who knows if they will have physical releases in a decades time.

      (*including Shada,
**or twelve depending on whether you consider Mission to the Unknown and Dalek Masterplan as two stories or as a two release equivalent based on episode count)

@ Prof Horner, Yes I agree WiS will be animated (and before SP), it’s a question of when. With the Smugglers and Celestial Toymaker animations rumoured to be in the works, I’m thinking there may be a run of Hartnell stories released before another Troughton.

    • Prowl 1701

      August 13th, 2023 - 4:34pm

I figure season 4 will be one of the last sets, giving them time to do smugglers and many e highlanders, if possible. 2026 would be fine

    • Bobby Fackrell

      August 19th, 2023 - 9:42am

Many say 13 ‘will be left until the end’ but it’s total speculation, there’s some rumours supporting 16 being next but until someone produces some strong evidence otherwise for me 13 is just as likely as to come out next as 15 or 16

    • James

      August 19th, 2023 - 10:53am

Would make sense to finish on a Tom set as that’s how it started. I’d say season 3 be Penultimate as so much work to do on it. Either animate all missing eps by 1 story if they going to just recon 1 per season. OR maybe just fill in the gaps with animation and brush up the episodes that exist. Then finish on Tom. If they haven’t already release the rumoured Wilderness Set.

    • Gordon

      August 19th, 2023 - 2:11pm

For season 3 it will be whatever has been animated by the time they get round to it in 2027. If it’s all animated it will be released complete. If it’s1 2 3 4 or even 5 stories left then the remaining gaps will be filled by recons. Hard to really see how many of the animations will get done for season 3 at this time as we don’t know yet how many animation teams are working on these new animations and we don’t know which ones will get worked on for the animation range in the next few years.

Somebody post a link, I want to see this picture of the animation

It’s not too suprising it’s that style as Ian really loved the moonbase. Hopefully we will get to see it in action.

As much as I want to see this project completed and I do wish ian well on it I can’t but help find some of Ian’s actions very questionable. Several people have suggested a proper crowdfunding site like gofundme or Kickstarter but Ian is very apprehensive and wants “to keep it low key”. You have to message him and exchange bank details instead. No word on what the actual financial target is apart from vague comment about thinking they can animate a 4 parter for £20k. No word on what has been currently raised either. Ian is offering incentives for investing (dvd copies of his versions of shada, mission to the unknown, the unmade season 23 dark dimension plus the newly animated massacre) however offering money for bbc copyrighted material on dvd (namely soundtracks) is a very grey legal area I suspect. He doesn’t seem to have any fallback if the animation gets shutdown by the bbc or if they don’t complete it for whatever reason. The 20k to do a full story comment is also very questionable. Unless he’s using interns or got a special deal to promote the animation team 20k seems very underpaid in animation terms. He has 4 other projects in the works alongside this project but the last I heard he’s still struggling to get financing sorted for this project. Surely it’s best to completely finance 1 thing before starting on the other 4. You can also not say anything negative about the project which means you can’t even question things.

Despite my reservations I am willing to be won over by it. If there was some sort of guarantee of a release through a proper crowdfunding site and the amount to contribute was maybe £40-£50 I could probably justify that.

Darn autocorrect, I’ve always liked the planet 55 style, especially the Moonbase..

From what I saw of the last batch the only animation that was very good quality was MTTU. Shada was good, but not good enough for a commercial release. Things like the extended DIT are dire. I would think long and hard before anyone parts money for an animation that you have not even seen test moving footage of, at least with the BBC animations you know what you are getting from a trailer and it’s only £20 for DVD/Blu Ray and NOT £100 plus.

    • Gordon

      August 19th, 2023 - 11:48pm

Ian definitely isn’t happy: It looks like the evil trolls are going to force me into giving mute copies to my friends and investors and they will have to sync it up with the soundtrack.

In other words he was planning on selling DVDs of the animation with the soundtrack on it. People quite rightly told him the bbc own the soundtrack and he would get sued for doing that. So if you are donating it’s £100 minimum for a mute animation.

The 3 images he has put up do look good but however I’m pretty sure they have been simply copied or traced from other images. The shot of hartnell looks good because it’s simply been copied from his reign model from somewhere in those 2 animated episodes. The images of Barry justice and Joan young were copied/traced from set photos of them in costume. The shots only really show that the animation team are good at tracing. The real test is when the animation is motion.

He could be trousering the money, so no way would the BBC be happy with him selling copies of this. It’ll all end in tears, it normally does. I admire his passion and drive, but certainly not the way he goes about it and his behaviour.

Pretty sure I can guess how this is all going to go

Step 1: announce plan to animate massacre and asks for donations/money in exchange for dvd. People tell him about the legal complications of doing it but he does not listen

Step 2: show off stills that look good

      Step 3: animation gets completed

Step 4: some friends and fans see it and rave about how great it is and better than what the bbc is doing

Step 5: offers it for free. The bbc are impressed but are unable accept for legal and other reasons.

Step 6: Ian has meltdown calls bbc and whoever it was that turned it down ungrateful for throwing back the animation in his face. Rants about how much he spent/wasted on it and about how much he’s done for the bbc over the years and
      ungrateful the company is.

Step 7: some time later falls out with someone who then precedes to leak it. Ian precedes to flip out over it and threatens to end whoever ends it.

Step 8: years later the bbc gets round to animating it. Ian buys it then reviews it completely trashing it in the process and talks about how much better his version is

How do I know this will happen? It happened with shada

      Just some guesses:
The four life of documentaries: Michael Craze (Season 4), Patrick Troughton (Season 6) Ian Marter (Season 13) and Mary Tamm (Season 16)

Making ofs: Horror of Fang Rock, Twin Dilemma and possibly a 60s story.

I have no ideas for the looking fors, usually important people which don’t get the credit as much as some contributers

Weekend with Frazer Hines (due to the fact we have tons of interviews with him already)

Season overview could be for any Season still to release, maybe another 60s one possibly

As well as Chris there is the other guy producing new extras, to lessen the load I guess.

Not sure what he is working on though, just noticed he produce items on last two sets.

One looking for will be Malcom Hulke, I think. An interesting character with interesting life, taken too soon. Maybe Robert Holmes too. The Patrick Troughton feature will be fun , for his private life alone!
      Weekend with Sylvester McCoy perhaps?

Steve broster. He did quite a few extras on the dvd range. The special edition dvd of day of the daleks was completely his baby.

I’m going to take a guess:

Season 1: looking for John Lucarotti (total stab in in the dark)

Underwater menace: the life of Michael craze

Season 6: weekend with frazer hines/the life of Patrick troughton

Season 15: the life of Graeme Williams/making of fang rock

Season 16: the life of Mary tamm/making of kroll (despite the lack of living people involved I’m sure something can be made up)

      Season 20: the kings demons

Season 25: season overview (or season 1) (every other unreleased season already has a season or era overview)

Not really sure on the other looking for

He also did the Space War set, which wasn’t so well received. In fact he voiced his own documentaries on the set, but on the S10 blu ray a new voice over was added if i recall correctly.

Haven’t they already done a Greame Williams tribute on the key to time DVD Boxset? Or was that just about his time on Who ,I can’t remember ,I haven’t watched it in years.Looking for Mervyn Pinfield on season 1 , kit Pedler on season 4 and Malcom Hulke on season 7.

The Perfect Scenario documentaries, yeah, they were incredibly odd. Including people who’ve never existed and an interview with Barry Letts dating from…ahem…2016. That aged badly immediately, considering he passed away not only in the same year, but in the same month the Dalek War box set was released.

The Graeme Williams doc was more about his era than his life.

I wouldn’t say Steve Broster was/is one of the bad Documentary makers. Some of the ones Brendan Sheppard did I do find a bit odd when watching them back now.

Steve’s new Docs for the Blu-ray range so far have been:

      Delta and the Bannermen Making-of
      Destiny of the Daleks Making-of
      The Two Doctors Making-of
Doctor Who and the Collectors: 1960s
Flight Through Eternity – The Story of Season 2
The Tine Monster Making-of (Expanding from the Feature he did for the DVD)

Considering he had hoped to Film part of the Delta and Two Doctors Making-of’s at the original Locations with the main Cast from them, I’ve been pretty happy with what he was able to do.

The BFI event is already sold out. Not surprised since Janet and Sarah was gonna be there just like how Katy was at the Sea Devils one.
    Really sucks man.

No kidding. We’re talking about the Five Doctors yes? Because I could have sworn it was listed as August 10th for tickets on the bfi page but clearly I must have misread this. Sorry for the confusion. That’s absolutely rotten luck for all those who wanted to attend.

    • Gordon

      August 10th, 2023 - 6:59am

@rgb74 You didn’t misread it. August 10th was date for the general sale for non bfi members. Bfi members always get first dibs 2 days early. Sucks a little for the general public but the membership keeps the lights on the bfi southbank and imax.

      August 10th, 2023 - 6:33pm

I actually bought membership to try and get tickets this time, having missed out on the last few because of this members pre-sale, but missed the announcement – have been checking the bfi site and Twitter for weeks 🙁
Does anyone know where these events get announced?

I only remembered because someone mentioned it on here. And then I checked on the site. It’s not that easily found. I had to know when the actual event would be (16th Sep) and go to that date in the What’s on page. And when I checked first, there was nothing for September, so had to go back.
When I did find it, it said the date of the sale to general public.
I guess only if you know about the member pre-sale, you’d know when it is.
