Over 800 episodes are heading to iPlayer.

    Russell:

“I’d like to thank the BBC for all the hard work, to get this massive back catalogue under one roof, at long last. I’m so excited for new viewers – imagine being 8 years old, spending winter afternoons exploring the 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond. And we’re determined this won’t be a dusty museum – we have exciting plans to bring the back catalogue to life, with much more to be revealed!”

Could that be a hint that more animations are coming?

Probably Going to be interesting how they deal with the orphan episodes especially those with animated recreations.
Hopefully they’ve sorted whatever stopped reign of terror being on britbox for this .

Since it’s all going to be free to watch if you already have the licence fee the gap for the standard editions won’t make sense now.

      October 10th, 2023 - 5:52pm

There is probably still a market for the standard collection sets. Smaller but there is probably a considerable amount of people that still want a complete set of blu rays plus extras.

      October 10th, 2023 - 6:47pm

Are the animated episodes going to be part of this bakc catalogue? (fury, evil, abominable, galaxy, power, web, marca and moon).
Or will they just show the sptrys with the surging episodes?
Bad if we’ve forked out for them on dvd/blu/steel if they are all going to be available now on iPlayer.
Saying that usa audience got them televised. Yet the rest of thr world had to buy them

    • Gordon

      October 10th, 2023 - 8:19pm

I suspect all the ones on britbox/itvx will be included. Ie all the ones up to fury from the deep bar maybe reign of terror that was inexplicably not brought over to britbox/itvx for rights reasons. It’s possible that other animations could go on.

The USA did get them televised but they paid a significant sum of money for the privilege and to help fund them. We wouldn’t have got any of the full length 2017-2022 animations without them. They also got it months after it had been released.

Let’s not forget with these dvd/blu ray/steelbooks have bonus features and audio options not available on iPlayer. With those releases you are also paying for those too.

This is a good thing as it opens the animations up to more people. Depending on which versions they include it could give them a sales boost. I do kind of wonder if the bbc themselves are the new partner helping bbc studios fund them.

I’ll stick to my DVDs and standards, thanks. Mainly for the special features, movie versions/CGI enhancements etc, but also because I don’t this Iplayer arrangement will be forever. And all 800+ episodes? I can see them being forced to take down Talons after about five minutes.

    • Rory

      October 11th, 2023 - 12:22pm

I highly doubt this will decrease the sales of the discs. People buy the Collection sets for the extra content as much as for the episodes. Even the limited packaging is a seller, although they don’t sell out immediately now that the standard editions are being released.

Even the animations will still sell. Anyone who collects the steelbooks will continue to do so even if the episodes will come to iPlayer at some point.

It’s as much about the extra content and the presentation as it is about the episodes.

      October 11th, 2023 - 12:38pm

Apparently it’s going to be as permanent as possible. Using the hd remasters wherever possible I’ve heard. All The confidentials (not 100 percent sure but I’ve heard it might be the full length versions) too. Got subtitles, audio discription and sign language for the classic series too. There is going to be a written and photographic curated archive too. Say what you will the bbc have put a lot of effort into this. Talons has been up for a few years on britbox already. Nobody has complained.

    • Martin

      October 11th, 2023 - 1:26pm

also as a response to the US being able to broadcast said shows on TV, It was through a Paid Cable Channel which from what I understand was similar to our Sky Networks, where you pay a monthly fee…

    • RPG74

      October 11th, 2023 - 5:48pm

I get that no-one has complained about Talons being on Britbox, but that’s a subscription service, and the kind of people who complain about these things-young social justice warriors (I’m being descriptive here, not attacking anyone)-are the kind of people who don’t use Britbox but do use Iplayer. Still, maybe I’m wrong.
Interesting stuff though, and it’s nice that those who can’t or won’t buy the sets will still have access to the catalogue.

I might be able to give a different perspective to this situation–I’m a uni student with friends of varying sensibilities and compunctions.
It seems like many people who advocate against racial discrimination/stereotyping don’t want to remove history that doesn’t align with modern sensibilities–they only want to prevent it from happening again.
That is, the further back in time you go, the easier it is to see racist media in a neutral light. There are always the pot-stirrers who look out for things with a chance of offence, but I hope most people will be fine with a brief message discussing the program (rather than outright censorship).
I completely understand your apprehensions, and being from New Zealand, this may be different in my corner of the world. The Iplayer shift looks like a wonderful idea (even though I won’t be able to access any of it here)…

Regarding the judder issues. I have an LG 4K tv and LG 4K Blu-ray player. I noticed the improvement in Game mode but by no means perfect. I also noticed that if I turn TruMotion off on the TV the worst of the juddering stops. Still some ‘throbbing/wobbling’ occurring. More evident in the studio footage than the film scenes (but I haven’t tested that extensively). And I’ve noticed it in Behind the Sofa (the new studio footage as well as the clips). I went back and checked my Season 19 on the same settings/devices and no problems at all, so clearly an issue with the way this release had been produced. Apologies if this repeats other peoples conversations. Given the cost of these sets it’s important they get the quality control right so we should keep flagging it. I have had no response from DVD support as yet – anyone had any further update from them or the Restoration Team?

I have noticed all the things you say. I have an LG BP125 and BP250 ( neither 4k ) and an LG 4k TV. The episodes play ok with auto off on the player and 1080i on but only if the TV is set to game mode. However, in game mode some of the special features like Behind the Sofa judder. The strange thing is some people have bought multiple sets and the fault has been present on all of them. Others have played the discs and seen no issue. Some people have updated the firmware and the problem has disappeared. All very frustrating. Nobody has heard anything back from dvd support but they are looking into it.

Thanks Time Lord. Yes I have received a replacement set from Amazon but it is the same. I am considering returning and trying another source such as HMV in case it is a batch issue, although there is no guarantee I won’t get a set from the same batch. I’ve also updated the firmware on my Blu-ray player but to no avail.

I wouldn’t think they are too different, my terminus and enlightenment discs won’t okay the just skitter on the player most of the time and can take up to an hour to load (I got them from hmv)

Mr Bright one of the restoration team himself has said that his copy played fine on his OPPO but when he changed the play settings he saw the problem. So people who havent seen the problem might just be lucky with their player model and settings.

Why you so sure it’s 25 Bobby? Surely it won’t be another 80s set so soon

Nope not only fools uncut but the same team that did the 80s special set is doing blackadder out on 27th November. All the film sequences for season 1 exist so that season should look good at least.

    • Bobby Fackrell

      October 10th, 2023 - 6:16am

80s sets have been released consecutively before – did 18 not follow 19?

      It’s rumoured to be finished

Short season, relatively newer so does need as much work

Anniversary set in an anniversary year and people like rice pudding especially if it’s unlimited

    • Jake E

      October 10th, 2023 - 9:25am

Just found the listing. Wow that’s amazing. That flew under the radar.

      What about Only Fools Blu-Ray?

    • Prof Horner

      October 10th, 2023 - 9:36am

When 18 followed 19 it was the start of the blu ray sets, only the second and third releases. These were the first eighties. There are only two eighties sets left to release. So I don’t think two eighties sets back to back will happen. I know you seem to want season 25 so desperately Bobby, it Will come, probably in the next year to eighteen months , depending on how many boxsets we get next year, seeing how we got two last year and it seems only two again this year. If only two again next year it has to be another Tom and the first Pat . As I remember a we got a Sylvester in 2020 and the second in 2021. So he has been more than favoured, so has Colin Baker.

    • Gordon

      October 10th, 2023 - 10:20am

They have said this numerous times. They don’t time things round anniversary’s. yes they released season 8 roughly 50 years since broadcast and season 20 30 years after broadcast but both of those seasons were delayed because of covid. Yes there has been consecutive 80s sets in a row but that was when there was a whole bunch of them to be released. There is still 4-5 years to go. Makes sense to space the remaining 2 80s seasons out.

There is rumours that they may have filmed some material for 25 but that doesn’t anyway mean it’s ready to go. Chris chapman has 10 documentary from 7 releases to be released in various different states. It will be years before some of those will see the light of day. I’ve heard 25 is finished but there is no actual evidence outside of my sources say. It could be a load of made up nonsense for all I know. I’ve also heard seasons 6, 13, 15, 16 and 21 are all ready to go just because they have extras supposedly filmed for them. They all can’t be right.

You may think a season like 25 is easy but look at season 24 it was far from the case. 100 hours of studio footage to whittle down to 25. Extended versions to be made for all 4 stories. 5.1 mixes and isolated scores for all episodes and extended versions too. It’s a massive amount of work

    • Gordon

      October 10th, 2023 - 10:23am

Jake e the only fools uncut is a hope rather than an actual release.

Heard about blackadder happening back in the spring with all the 40th anniversary stuff so it being released wasn’t too much of a surprise. Just didn’t know the exact date till a couple of days ago.

    • Anonymous

      October 10th, 2023 - 12:11pm

From what I’ve read, there isn’t any further Only Fools blu rays in development at the moment because the BBC are trying to release a range of comedy series first. It’s likely they’ll return to it in the next couple of years though.

I also understand that sadly the Blackadder blu ray won’t include the recently broadcast pilot episode due to rights issues. There are so many other clips and sketches I hope might be included though. It would be a dream to have a Blackadder set put together with the amount of love and resources as the Whorays get!

In one of the forums unusually one person had issues with judders on The Five Doctors disc, not so much the others. Also another person had judders on Arc oland Snakedance. They then switched players and then left this comment.

“I watched the same eps on a different player (an Oppo instead of a Sony) and they were fine on that. So whatever upscaling/deinterlacing algorithm the Sony uses must not agree with the encoding “

Rex F I have two Blu-ray players. An old BP125 and a brand new BP250. Both show the faults, unless I set to game mode and take off auto. Kings Demons is still bad with those two changes made. This is confusing as many others with a basic LG player have not seen the faults at all.

So no announcement today on the next Boxset. It seems we are again just getting two this year as was the case last year. I had hoped when season 9 came out in March we would have time for three. Of course we should be grateful for the two we got. Both are excellent. So it seems that 15 has become the frontrunner for the next Boxset. If the rumour is true next February. Which hopefully will give us a good chance for three next year. If 15 comes out first. Then the biggie as far I am concerned, season 6. Then maybe season 11 to finish off. Let’s hope so.

It’s also odd that others had the issue on a Sony, swapped to an Oppo and don’t have the issue. Your experience tells me a batch of discs maybe the problem. Firmware updates are mainly for fixing exactly these type of stability issues with software playback, not solely confined to discs that refuse to load but also stability on problem discs that occur at times, if your firmware version is out of date there’s a good chance this could fix these stability issues with your discs, there’s always a good reason for manufacturers providing updates,so always keep an eye out for updates.

If you require any advice on updating please ask.

Unfortunately these players normally when using the USB to update require the file system to be formatted to Fat32 or Ntfs, so I don’t think updating from a smartphone is possible.
Its certainly not something I have ever tried.

I updated the firmware on my Panasonic dp-ub450 4k player. The slow motion seems to have resolved but there is still a subtle judder at times like the picture is unstable. This was the same as setting to video. Half the problem solved but still not convinced this is just a player issue. TARDIS scenes are especially problematic. More noticeable once I compare to how stable the image is on terminus and enlightenment.

I don’t have Britbox any more, but apparently lost episodes of pre-Python series The Complete and Utter History of Britain have been found and are available on Britbox without fanfare. They were just mislabeled in the archives for 54 years! I’d have thought this sort of discovery wasn’t possible after all these years. Perhaps Marco Polo is just labelled as The Magic Roundabout?!

It’s on itvx as well if you have a premium subscription.

It all depends on how well maintained the archive is. Itv’s is apparently in a really bad state. Paul Venezis said there was a master quad tape of sapphire and steel holding a door open when he went in 1986. It does make you think though what was they mislabelled as that they weren’t looked at for 5 decades. The good news is that they found it while digitising the itv archive. Which leads to hope that they find some more missing itv shows

As for the bbc archives holding completely missing stories of doctor who I think it’s very unlikely but not impossible. I believe the bbc archive had moved once or twice since the 60s to where it is now in Perivale park. It’s possible that things have been moved about and wrongly placed but it’s probable that they checked things when putting them back. The odd episode mislabelled or misplaced I can see but a whole story i don’t know if I can see that. There has been 1 or 2 things turned up doctor who wise. The space pirates film trims for ep 1 turned up when they were restoring dads army for dvd and the original master tapes for the extended vhs version of silver nemesis turned up after believing to be lost for over a decade. So these things do happen. The bbc are in the process of digitising everything but will probably take decades to do due to how large the archive is.

Paul Vanezis was talking about the ITC archive, so that’s long gone fortunately. Carlton did great work on rescuing that one. Modern ITV, for all their faults, have been doing a much better archive job, finding lots of things as they’ve centralised in Leeds over the last two decades. LWT’s film recordings have always been a bit of a mystery, presumably because for the most part the actual tapes survived and there was no real reason to look at them. The potential for filling gaps cropped up when they found a 16mm copy of the missing Hark at Barker for the DVD release. The Adventures of Don Quick is probably the biggest, or best known LWT gap I’d have thought – or tape damaged Updown eps for a couple of bits of dialogue and the junked bw first ep.

I have said in a previous post that I had issues with judders on the early discs in the set. I also posted that to solve the issue I had to set my Blu-ray player from auto to 1080i in the settings and set Game Mode on the TV. This fixed it for the episodes. However, if I play the special features with the game mode setting I get the judder. I have to put game mode off to watch the special features. Also Terminus, Enlightenment and Five Doctors are better with game mode off. It’s getting very confusing now. I would rather this could be resolved with a magic setting we can all use rather than replacement discs though for the reasons I’ve stated previously. If I had a player that upscaled, like the panosonic 4k I wouldn’t be seeing any of these issues I’m sure, and that is probably why some people haven’t seen these glitches.

I’ve been using a 4K player and if anything it makes the motion issues in VT sequences more clear. I’ve also tried on two other blu-ray players and for the ones which did have conversion settings to adjust, I followed the RT’s advice and while reducing the issue to an extent, it didn’t eliminate it. There’s still an inherent stutter and flicker for me across multiple set ups. The stutter also shows up in clips of Arc, Snakedance, Mawdryn and King’s Demons in the new bonus features so it’s likely the de-interlacing error lies in the remaster’s video file. Unfortunately I do believe revised discs are the best solution we can all hope for in this case. Though I don’t believe it would jeopardise the future of the range as these errors will need to be addressed for the international releases anyway now they are aware of them. 🙂

I’ve had no issues. But I do have a Panasonic 4K player and LG OLED TV. So you might be right.

    • The Time Lord 1944

      October 3rd, 2023 - 3:37pm

OllieOz good points. What make of 4k player is yours? Panasonic 4k doesn’t seem to have an issue but it might just be that it’s specific upscaling of blurays feature is hiding the issue rather than solving it.

    • OllieOz

      October 3rd, 2023 - 5:10pm

I’ve played them on a Sony x800m2, Sony X700, PS3 and my family’s old OPPO to similar results.

Also tried my PS5 but unfortunately it doesn’t have conversion settings available so it gets the full blast of ‘motion shimmer’.

    • The Time Lord 1944

      October 3rd, 2023 - 5:20pm

The panosonic 4k has an extra ability to upscale blu-ray I think and hide any faults. This could explain why people with a panosonic 4k aren’t noticing it. Doesn’t mean the fault isn’t there. It would also explain why people with a ps5 are experiencing it the worst. I have a basic LG Blu-ray player and LG HDTV and have had to make the adjustments but like you it does not totally eliminate it and I have to adjust the settings back for the later disc. Weird thing is someone else with the same TV and player are not seeing the problem at all. It’s very odd.

    • The Time Lord 1944

      October 3rd, 2023 - 7:58pm

Gio it’s all very odd. How are some people with Panasonic 4k saying no issue and others have issues? I have a basic LG Blu-ray player and LGTV and have the issue but somebody else with the exact same combination equipment does not. Maybe it is a batch problem but then the Restoration Team have noticed it on their own copies and as OllieOz says the clips on the special features repeat the issue which suggests the interlacing issue is an issue with the remaster itself rather than a specific batch.

    • Jake E

      October 4th, 2023 - 4:32pm

Like I’ve said before I’ve bought 2 copies and while they both had the problems in similar places, one of my copies wasn’t quite as bad. This leads me to believe that there is mastering issues with the disc. As these were both played on the same TV, same player and with the same settings

    • The Time Lord 1944

      October 4th, 2023 - 5:21pm

Jake E. You may be right. My Wicker Man Blu-ray released the same week also has judder issues on some of the special features that involve interlacing. They are the new HD special features created for this release. Could be a problem at the production/duplication center. In which case insurance should cover the costs of replacement sets.

    • Rex F

      October 5th, 2023 - 2:14am

I don’t see how a physical defect could cause problems with the deinterlacing algorithms, and I’ve not seen anything that looks like usual errors and error correction – plus the second fields are on there and playable with a setting alteration. Saying that, can anyone rip and burn a problem episode, and see if the playback has a different result? That would narrow it down.

Does anyone know of any BD authoring software updates this year? Or replacement/new products? I’m thinking of the increase in incorrect flagging issues on DVDs circa 2013 onward, apparently coinciding with a software update.

    • OllieOz

      October 5th, 2023 - 10:54am

I have had two copies from different retailers, one with a damaged box, one to replace it. Both played the same on multiple setups. The thing that makes me confident it’s a mastering issue and not a batch issue is that it appears specifically on clips of the affected stories in special features too. For instance on disc 4 in the ‘in conversation’ at 00:00:46 amongst a montage of clips there is a one from ‘Arc’ displaying the issue while VT clips around it from other stories do do not.

    • The Time Lord 1944

      October 5th, 2023 - 11:47am

OllieOz I agree with you on this as I have noticed that too. I just don’t understand why so many people, including Ian Levine, have not noticed or picked up on any issues. We collectors would be on this straight away but so many are not seeing the problem. I corrected mine by setting from auto to 1080i on the player. Disc 1 and 2 required two changes, the 1080i and game mode on the TV display. Without both settings the faults were visible. Disc 3 required only the 1080i alteration. Disc 4 and 5 were ok without any alteration. Disc 6 the Kings Demons required the same two changes of setting as disc 1 and 2 but even with these two changes faults are still visible. Five Doctors discs are fine. I have two LG Blu-ray players an old BP125 and a brand new BP250. I would love to know which players are not showing the faults. Other people with LG players are saying their discs play perfectly. Maybe they are better model players than mine. It is so frustrating.

    • The Time Lord 1944

      October 5th, 2023 - 6:00pm

OllieOz I also agree with you because it’s only the episodes on the sets that are the problem and the clips of the episodes on Behind the Sofa. The only time the special features become a problem is when I change my settings to correct the faults of the episodes. The change of settings does not suit the special features which then deteriorate in picture quality themselves and Behind the Sofa specifically shimmers and judders. If it was a batch of discs that was the problem we wouldn’t be getting these mixed issues.

Mising new effect on one of the Raston Warrior Robot shots in the 40th edition update. All a bit “shoddy” so far – spelling mistakes, info text out of sync, missing effects. I know it’s a big set with lots going on, but a missing effect when you are working on new effects?

    • Rex F

      October 2nd, 2023 - 4:50pm

That doesn’t make it the worst set, and as this has more content it’s probably one of the most successful ones. (I’m still amazed more people didn’t complain about 2 and 22, where the episodes themselves were unnecessarily ropey or glitchy – 22 wasn’t even upscaled properly, but hey-ho.)

    • Rex F

      October 2nd, 2023 - 4:53pm

Oh, and the S22 Attack production subtitles had several factual errors contradicted by what was actually on screen – avoiding typos is only half the battle.

    • Samuel

      October 3rd, 2023 - 1:22am

@Rex F – Woah, hold up – Seasons 2 & 22 Limited Edition episodes ropey? Season 22 Limited Edition not upscaled properly?

Do you have an online reference for those claims? That’s pretty massive news to me if legit.

    • Rex F

      October 3rd, 2023 - 5:44am

The reference is my eyes. S2 is filtered excessively, leading to unnecessary banding/posterisation and smear. As soon as the title sequence started up I knew I was in for disappointment, but I’m someone who sees noise reduction nasties very easily – many don’t notice and I often envy them. (The clean title film transfer on, I think, the PotD Blu-ray was much better – nothing was dialed up to 11.) S22 needed another pass to fix upscaling/noise reduction nasties, particularly when video effects involving the colour red occurred – it looks like they did a one size fits all method and didn’t go back to make adjustments when the algorithms got confused (the DVDs were fine, so it is the BD preparations). It’s just how my eyes and brain work I suppose, I notice stuff like that without actually looking for it. I also spotted the scaling glitches on the Monty Python BDs, and the quirks of those get written about even less (and the subtitles on those are genuinely bad – how does “laugh” become “snuenue”?)

    • Samuel

      October 3rd, 2023 - 12:29pm

      @Rex F – I don’t doubt what you’re saying, I’ll give these sets a watch very soon myself.

Just sounds shocking to me that any of these Blu Ray sets would happily allow banding to be rendered on top of the final projects that go onto the final discs. I used to do that by accident as a kid when making videos on Sony Vegas. Especially when there’s such a quick fix for banding, you just add a very minimal noise layer. Really unprofessional if Season 2 suffers from banding.

    • Rex F

      October 5th, 2023 - 2:31am

Samuel: My gut reaction was to roll my eyes at the authoring team, but then I thought that I was being unfair – it was the removal of all the original film grain that caused the encoder a problem, and they probably didn’t want to add noise back when someone had clearly tried to remove it all. If a certain person had left the title film looking like actual “film”, there’s no problem to address.

I know the budgets aren’t massive for these sets, and the team really do push things to maximise it, but the rushing and last minute stuff, and the lack of final checks/fixes, do show up. An extra pair of eyes and an extra week could make a significant difference. And dialing back the noise reduction a bit, because it’s not the 90s.

    • Samuel

      October 5th, 2023 - 7:28am

@Rex F – Completely agree 100% with what you’re saying regarding The Collection range.

The idea of the range is second to none. The people that do the hard work are second to none. My guess is it’s upper management demanding the likes of “zero film grain” along with tight work deadlines having already been drawn up and expected of all future work since 2017 when the range started.

I much prefer the standard sets, allowing time for some hindsight, review, revision where allowed. The product size, convenience of it, as apposed to shelves upon shelves of mass the previous dvds took up before it (you can argue that streaming’s even more convenient, but I prefer being able to keep what I pay for).

I feel the standard edition is the best compromise. There’s really needless, questionable stuff such as banding like we’ve talked about – but the video bitrate, perhaps the possibility of being able to fix any banding with a thin layer of film grain on the computer – is still a better deal against the compression, really off colour grading at times, and lack of decent source stock notably in the early 70’s story dvds (the likes of Season 9) that still make the Collection in standard sets a bargain.

All of this, let alone the new special features. The one on one interview with William Russell in the Season 2 set is my all time favourite Doctor Who extra.

So a week Thursday will be last normal issue of DWM before the no doubt anniversary issue next month. Do we think that there will announcement this week on the next Boxset this coming week? Or maybe more animations or better still the return of missing episodes? As I remember it was ten years ago in October that it was announced the return of Enemy of the World and (most of) Web of Fear. Though Underwater Menace animation is welcome. It would be nice to have something even more exciting to finish the anniversary year.
Well watched all the stories and most of the extra’s on season 20 and enjoyed it. I had no trouble except on the celebration doc when the picture froze during the bit when the designer was talking about the new console. I had to pull the plug out and put the plug in again just to get the disc out. But I played it again and it worked alright. So I have no idea what happened there.

Would be nice to have a few more stories returned/found. People have said there few stories they know are in private hands so maybe putting off them being animated in hope they will be returned so don’t waste money.

Still waiting for the smugglers to be officially confirmed it’s being animated, not heard anything more since January’s story. Same goes with the colourization of a story (or stories), which was in the same article (unearthly child as 60th year I’m guesing). Smugglers had a few clips shown at a bfi which were where in colour which adds more proof to it being animated.

Hoping for another boxset for this year as a. Its anniversary year and b. The coincidentall pattern since they started (2, 3, 2, 3, 2,).

Awaiting news on next standard collection release.

still waiting for the cover art of the series 1-4 box set due November

And a box set for jodies last season. ( revolution of the Daleks, flux story, eve of the daleks, legend of the sea devil, power of the doctor).

I’m hoping so Prof. My fingers and toes are doubly crossed.

Lee has teased the colour pallette for the front of the next boxset, or at least said those were the set’s predominant colours, and we have rumours that Season 15 is due February.

I am hoping beyond hope that we get Season 6 by December/January and then Season 15 is announced in February for an April/May 2024 release.

Personally I’m a big fan of Troughton’s Doctor so I’m a little miffed that we don’t have a Pat set yet. Being the anniversary year it would be fitting to end it by having at least one boxset representing each Doctor’s Era in the collection so far.

Some people argue that an anniversary year doesn’t feel right without having a Tom set released but I’m happy for 15 to be released early next year and Seasons 13 and 16 to come later on. Tom is my favourite Doctor, him and Capaldi, but I’d be much happier getting a Pat Season at this moment in time than I would another Tom Season. Having a Tom Season to kick-off 2024 sounds better to me than having one at the end of 2023 and still no Troughton.

Having said all of that I know I’d be over the moon with whatever is announced next and whenever it is announced, which is hopefully very soon.

      October 1st, 2023 - 4:27pm

To be honest I’m not expecting too much outside of a potential animation or collection set announcement. There simply hasn’t been enough buzz about a potential episode find for there to be one imop. If there is an announcement about animation or collection set it won’t be out till December/January at this point. Looking at the listings there doesn’t seem to be room for the bfi to do a doctor who screening of anything till the end of November at the earliest.

The coulourisation clips of the smugglers had nothing to do with the bbc animating smugglers. That was done by kelidoscope and had nothing to do with the bbc outside of giving it the ok to be shown.

I’m expecting the 1-4 set to look similar to the 1-4 set inside the 1-13 set.

A series 13 with flux/eve/sea/power probably won’t happen now. A complete Jodie set is more likely

Absolutely loving the new CGI options: stunning. Hope more stories in a season boxset receive the CGI treatment. Season 13 could do with the Skarasen sequences being CGIed, as well as the fully grown Krynoid scenes in Seeds of Doom, integrating the fighter plane shots. Planet of Evil could do with improved space scenes. Season 11 with CGIed Dinosaurs with new melting city in Death to the Daleks, improved Queen Spider in Planet of Spiders as well as improved CGI sequences. Season 16, improved Kroll sequences, with new CGI options for Pirate Planet. Well, here’s hoping anyway… But the picture instability is a real concern with these box sets, especially at the price of £55. I have noticed the instability with Snakedance. What with the price hike, I have had to pick and choose which sets I want to buy. The multiple CGI options in season 20 was what made this set an appealing set to buy since I have not bought any of these Blu Ray sets since 2021. But I really do not want to be spending large sums of money on a box set with a picture quality that is below standard in places. As someone in an earlier message has said the Restoration Team have worked so hard, it’s a shame that there is this issue. Hope something can be done to remedy the situation please.

Good on the Restoration Team for opening a review into this set on behalf of the many customers having serious trouble. Much respect to them.

The Five Doctors was (mostly) shot on film, with almost all studio filming being pretty static in actor movements, so it’s no surprise that the frame rate issues appear not to be as apparent with that story, though may well still be in that episode, but maybe minimal.

It definitely sounds like a mixed situ. Some customers saying all the discs work perfectly, others saying one or two discs are juddery, or almost *all* the discs are juddery.

Might even be an issue only with certain batches, similarly what happened with Season 12 V2 and Season 8’s printing errors on booklets/discs in totally random units.

If it’s a certain batch error then while it’s unfortunate, surely it can be amended for the customers just as previous sets have had to do in the past.

Kind of why I gave up with Limited Editions and go for the generally revised Standards. The Limiteds are beautiful art pieces within their own right, but on a technical level you can’t expect people working as hard as the restoration team do to juggle half a million plates on such tight deadlines. It’s more a business level compromise – but on a consumer level, having offered a replacement programme in the past, customers should be offered it again, if it’s verified that Season 20 LE has playback glitches.

As has been said there are too many people saying there’s an error and at the price we are paying to not get the benefit of the amazing work the restoration team do, which lets face it is one of the main reasons for buying these sets, seems in itself reason enough to be offered a disc replacement program. I don’t agree BTW that just setting to video cures the problem. Yes it cures the slow motion juddering but there is still an instability in the image which makes watching a substandard experience. Fingers crossed something can be done so we can view the superb restoration as it should be. The restoration team must get very frustrated when these things occur as are their hard work goes unappreciated.

Time Lord 1944 – I agree. A disc replacement on this scale could potentially jeopardise the future of The Collection releases. Having to change two small settings is no skin off my nose. I don’t even have to get up off the sofa to do it.

    • What’s this?

      October 1st, 2023 - 6:34pm

So reading the comments on here about problems with the discs, mine have been fine until terminus, there appears to be 3 or 4 vertical lines on some scenes down the left hand edge of the picture as you look at it and the same lines down the centre of the picture on some scenes, it’s especially bad when Tegan and turlough are trapped under the floor end episode one and start episode 2 the picture is very blurry anyone else getting this?
Five doctors discs fine, haven’t got through any of the other discs yet.

Jake E that’s not how it works. They don’t make them to order. They have to choose a number in a batch and do a minimum. If all discs in the set need replacing for the majority of people it could significantly delay or effect the upcoming standard and collection releases

If I was the BBC I would put all effort into finding out exactly what caused the problem and then find out exactly how to resolve it on each individual player. Then send out the instructions to anyone that requests them. I think every player will play the discs on a certain setting. That will be far cheaper to resolve it. Then if they discover there are a certain few players that are incapable of playing the discs I would offer a limited replacement programme for those people.

Jake E I am sure you said you had an LG Blu-ray player. I gave a basic LG Blu-ray player. I set my LG player to 1080i in the settings and my LG TV to game mode. Only with BOTH of those settings did I see an improvement on disc 1 and 2. Try that if you haven’t tried it. Having said that we should not have to rely on a display setting on a TV to correct errors on discs or disc players. On a player maybe but not on the TV itself. Those settings did cause problems with the special features which played poorly with those settings so I needed to set it back to play those. Disc 4 onwards played ok for me without changing any settings.

Well I have finished watching all the stories and all the excellent new features. It is interesting to spot which new docs where made back in 2019 and which the were made more recently. The Kings Demons docs was made in 2019 as poor old Frank Windsor passed away in 2020. Loved the road trip and Let’s go Dutch. All in all a fantastic Boxset. Well done and thanks to all who contributed. Well worth the wait. Now let’s hope season 6 is as good if not better.

I miss when I had that level of enthusiasm. I’ve watched the Five Docs film rushes and started on the same disc’s studio footage, but that’s about it. I think I’ve shown myself that my enthusiasm has really waned. FOMO and a cheap price gained my purchase, not wanting to miss out on the archive extras – the kind of thing I once dreamed about seeing, never mind actually owning (clearly “once” being a key word, as I surprise myself). It’s a brilliant curation of material, despite my reaction.

Yeah, someone mentioned in the comments of the unboxing for it, that they enjoyed how enthusiastic I am over the sets when they are announced and released. I just got mine yesterday and in that I have:

      1. Watched The five doctors 40th Anniversary edition
      2. Shot a review for it
      3. Watched arc of infinity (with the updated dvd effects)
      4. Shot reviews for each episode of it
      5. Watched the making of for arc of infinity, as I haven’t seen it in a while.
      6. Watched all of the behind thee sofas (except for kings demons, will do that tonight)
      7. Watched half of the Celebration video. Will finish it tonight too.
      8. And did the unboxing video for it first of all of course.

It was such a good day. I’m looking forward to really diving into it more tomorrow.

Completely agree. In my opinion, Season 20 is the best box set release so far. My favourite Doctor, my second favourite season (after Season 19), and the most extensive and comprehensive collection of extras so far.

Both Look Who’s Driving and Let’s Go Dutch were wonderful – the best new documentaries they’ve produced – and the Behind the Sofas were absolutely hilarious (I love the Peter/Sarah/Janet combo, and having Three Doctors on the sofas watching classic Who).

Pity there were no extended episodes this time round but, hey, we can’t have everything. Can’t wait for Season 21.

Heard they banked the season 21 special features when they eventually got mark strickson over expect it late 2024 or early 2025

    • Gordon

      September 29th, 2023 - 7:46am

To be honest that’s not too much of a surprise. I suspect that they have already banked at least part of the twin dilemma extras when filming season 22. Ie Colin, Nicola and Eric’s contributions. It makes perfect sense that they got mark to do at least some of his bits while he was doing season 20 extras. I suspect with how much the cast changes throughout the season there might have some bits and pieces still to go.

Chris chapman says he has 10 documentaries on 7 upcoming releases. Season 21 still could be a bit away.

I have heard quite a few seasons have had extras made for them so it would not be too surprising if extras are being banked for pretty much all of the remaining seasons. We are only about 4ish years away from finishing so we ain’t that far off from the end.

Season 6: Fraser has said he’s done the mind robber behind the sofa

Season7 or 11: doctor who youtube had a video of Sean pertwee being interviewed about his father for Jon’s 100th birthday in 2019 which was done during filming for a doctor who collection feature. No word on what season it was for.

Season 13: claims of extras have been recorded but not verifiable

Season 15: Annette woollet has said making of fang rock has been recorded

Season 16: stones of blood location filming allegedly done

      Season 21: already discussed

Season 25: Sylvester and Sophie allegedly filmed some extras for it.

The wilderness years: search out space, dr forever series, who Peter part 2 and other various 90/early 2000 pieces need homes. This set seems the perfect place for it to go

Also a documentary on target novels has been filmed. It may go on season 11 (as they started then) or possibly another season.

Keeper of traken and four to doomsday studio footage that turned up after season 18/19 releases. Is expected to be put on another release but no word on which one. Season 21 seems possible. Warriors of the deep for traken footage as it was Johnny Byrne’s last story he wrote and androzani as there is nice symmetry with including footage of Peter’s first day on set with his last.

I think if we are to see another set this calendar year – or just after Christmas, not only will that be a bonus as we’ve only had 2 per year for a little while – but it will be a smaller set (less stories) or one that doesn’t need so much work on extras

S25 plus S15 and S16 fit that bill so if anything – I personally suspect it will be one of those 3

Really not sure though – it could to either way, we may get an announcement within a few weeks and release just before Xmas – or we’ll see an announcement close to Christmas or just after – and release towards Easter

      Someone will know ……..

Hi, has anyone compiled a list of errors found on Arc Of Infinity, Snakedance, Mawdryn Undead & The King’s Demon’s? I’m currently watching Ep 1 of AOI, and at around 1:08, When Omega rests his hands on the armchair, there’s a brief slow motion juddering effect which looks like frames are missing. Another example is at 1:21 when Omega puts his hands together when he says “Clever. Most ingenious.” The next scene at 1:36 we see Damon pick up a used Proton Cell (Watch his hand closely) And again 1:38 we see Damon examine it closely. Blink and you’ll miss it. I just wondered if anyone else has made notes for the other stories.

I do think it’s important we all send an email ASAP to further encourage disc replacements though.

Having just watched AOI I had no juddering at the times you mentioned.

    • The Time Lord 1944

      September 27th, 2023 - 9:07pm

I had all those issues. The TARDIS scenes were particularly bad. I tried changing display settings with limited success. Then the Restoration Team recommended switching the players picture settings from auto to 1080i. I also changed the TV picture settings to game mode. Once I had made those changes the episodes paid perfectly. No judder at all.

    • David

      September 28th, 2023 - 7:07am

There has been speculation that the issue may be caused by newer 4K players/TVs, but I’m using an old PS3 and a Pioneer Kuro 720p TV and had the same annoying juddering issues.

I followed The Time Lord 1944’s advice and changed the PS3 as follows:

‘BD/DVD Cinema Conversion’ was previously set to ‘Auto’ (problems), now set to ‘Video’ (plays perfectly). ‘Video’ is apparently meant to be used when the disc is recorded in interlace format i.e.1080i

So why is this release different to all the others that have played just fine? It’s certainly not ideal to have to change settings to play one boxset and back again for everything else, but at least I can watch it properly now. It certainly seems like an error to me, and one I hope is not repeated on future releases.

I had a couple of issues on the Snakedance disc – there were times throughout all four episodes when the picture seemed ‘filmised’ (similar to how the first four series of Grange Hill looked on DVD) – but I’ve followed the Restoration Team’s advice on the two setting changes and now it plays perfectly.

  • Samuel

    September 27th, 2023 - 11:43am

    This is purely conjecture, and thought I had this Morning;

With interlaced frames – I assume modern media keeps the frames interlaced, instead of doubling the frame rates into progressive, so as to save disc space / file size space on streaming websites, and in terms of broadcasting I suppose interlacing just saves on signal?

Were these interlaced framed sections of tv shows simply de-interlaced from say, 25 frames to 50 progressive frames, would that not fix the entire problem happening on these Blu Rays? Of course if that expands the file sizes of these episodes a ton, then I guess that would lead towards 4k disc storage.

I don’t pretend to know the above is fact for definite, though I have in the past de-interlaced old video from 50i to 50p, sound perfectly synced, generating a bigger file size, but perfectly playable clips without any players needing to reinterpret chopped frames from the original file, since it’s all already been encoded in Handbrake’s software.

Also before it goes out my head; I strongly recommend TJ DW’s YouTube channel, specifically their 4k upscale of The Seeds of Doom, titled “Comparison of The Seeds of Doom 4k VS DVD Doctor Who 4k” taken from the 576p dvd source.

    • Samuel

      September 27th, 2023 - 4:37pm

      @Rex F – Many thanks for the reply;

      It’s a bit of a confusing read; Wikipedia states that both Blu Ray, and 4k Blu Ray are both compatible with 1920 x 1080p at 50fps, yet here’s a quote from the AVS website forum;

“If a particular Blu-ray is in 1080p, then it has to be 24/23.976fps since Blu-ray doesn’t support 1080p at any other refresh rates (25, 30, 50, 60, etc.).”

So I’m at a loss as to what a 4K disc can and can’t do. I used to have a spreadsheet site bookmarked confirming Blu Ray formats, but has funnily enough recently been shut down.

Just from a quick browse, I notice BritBox has Classic Who’s frame rate deinterlaced, but reduced down to 25fps – wheras BBC Iplayer has Dad’s Army at either deinterlaced 50i, or 50 constant frames, since it’s properly smooth footage compared with BritBox.

I have noticed one further error on the Season 20 box set – this time on The Five Doctors 1983 TX Version. If you watch it with either the Dolby Atmos soundtrack or the 5.1 Surround Sound it uses Rassilon’s weird slowed down/modulated voice from the 1995 Special Edition rather than his original as-broadcast voice. Though his original voice is on the Dual Mono soundtrack track.

Fair enough. It’s not a choice I particularly like – I’m not a fan of most changes made in the 1995 Special Edition – but I can live with it. I’ll just have to switch audio tracks at that point like I did the other night. Apart from that the Dolby Atmos soundtrack is beautiful.

Hugely relieved, this is the 1st set I’ve opened and started to watch immediately, probably because it was the 1st l was able to record on video and then watch multiple times. Life gets I the way so l hadn’t seen it again for about for 30 years, Peter is still my favourite Doctor not because he was the 1st l watched but probably because l had access to his stories via my home tapes to watch over and over. On a side note l do wish that Tegan hadn’t be brought back in Arc, Big Finish show what a good combination just The Doctor & Nyssa could be and a couple of TV stories with just them would have been wonderful. I really hope everyone sorts out there playback issues.

  • Samuel

    September 26th, 2023 - 4:36pm

Have just taken a look at Twitter, and it seems the playback issue with this boxset is consistent, namely with Arc of Infinity.

I can verify that I’m not getting any such playback issues with the original silver case dvds across Season 20. Referring to what I mentioned earlier, just set the Hz motion number from 24/25hz to 50/60hz in the LG menu once, done. Both studio and film scenes play perfectly fine.

I can’t fathom how some earlier Collection sets were also perfectly fine. My Season 23 (Trial of a Timelord) Collection set was fully studio / camera dv tape, and I honestly didn’t get a single picture glitch on any of the footage. Titles and extras are on a completely different frame rate to the main episodes, yet switched back and forth fine.

It sounds like The Restoration Team have responded on Twitter, but I think based on the online feedback the last few days they really ought to carry out some demonstrations on home equipment with these discs to try and replicate what customers are currently experiencing.

This is from the Restoration Team:

The fact that people are seeing an improvement by changing the player’s output to 1080i and forcing the TV to do the deinterlacing and scaling really underlines that it’s not a problem with the source material. If it was incorrectly encoded there would be no change.

If there’s little movement they fall back to treating it like film frames and then when they detect movement they use a different scaling scheme that deinterlaces into fields before scaling. It’s the areas where it’s just around threshold that causes problems.

Video rate credits rollers over a film sourced background can cause horrific problems for these algorithms. Always best to force video mode scaling if at all possible to stop this happening.

Guy, if you can give me some specific scenes to look at I’ll do so tonight. I run my devices in forced video mode deinterlacing / scaling to avoid these issues. For the most part it’s caused by adaptive scalers analysing the image and changing how they scale depending on content

So for all the writing but that’s what the restoration team have said on Twitter which is really starting to annoy me now. Basically saying it’s our fault (the buyers) and not the discs. I don’t think they will give us replacement discs

It might be the scaling algorithm they’ve used this time, or the filtering, that is giving the players grief. A bit of noise makes a player’s life easier when detecting 50i sources.

To the people who’ve had a problem with Behind the Sofa – does it affect any of the newly shot material? Or just the clips?

I really hope there is a solution that doesn’t require replacement discs. With the amount of money it costs to make these sets mistakes like this could effect future sets or the price of future seys. I hope they can do some tests and find a a way to solve it by suggesting specific settings. My issues are mainly with Arc of Infinity ( which is resolved by setting to Game Mode ) and Snakedance
( which is not resolved by setting to Game Mode ).

I’m finding mawdryn undead episode 3 particularly problematic. Especially the scene prior to mawdryn leaving the tardis. As he bends over the middle of the image is distorted and juddering. Even setting to video rather than auto not fixing the episode. Although the slow motion juddering has gone the image constantly has a low level background flickering. Sorry I’m not very technical. Hope that makes some sense.

I know exactly what you mean Gio. As I’m saying to everyone please contact DVD support. I’ve noticed the worst of it in the first 3 stories (I haven’t watched past Mawdryn yet) is all the Tardis interior scenes. It’s almost like the white background of the Tardis makes the motion issues so much worse

I had terrible problems with my set. I followed the advice of the Restoration Team and set my player from auto to 1080i. I also set my TV display to game mode. With both those settings all issues are now resolved.

Sorry to read that some are having picture and sound problems with the Season 20 Blu-ray.
What strikes me is that 4K TVs and/or 4K Blu-ray players are mentioned a lot.
I have a Panasonic (not 4K) Blu-ray player that is at least five years old, and a Panasonic HD TV that is over ten years old.
Have now watched all of the Season 20 episodes, and dipped a bit into the extras, and all of my discs play perfectly on my old kit. No problems at all with picture or sound. And no fiddling about with player/TV settings.
I do sometimes wonder if latest tech is not always all it’s cracked up to be.
(Why have vinyl records made such a big comeback, for example?!)

Or The Collection discs themselves are lacking some kind of physical material layer on them (not the data itself on the discs, but the physical discs themselves).

Newer Blu Ray players might be able to detect whatever is missing on the physical discs, hence this playback hiccuping.

I’ve only seen this happen before with really cheapy volume old film transfers that you can pick up for a few quid in Hmv. Computers themselves can rip the data from the discs, but the media players themselves seem to detect reading errors, bad sectors.

Maybe I’m wrong, but since everyone has mixed playback experiences watching exactly the same boxset, it can’t be the disc data, but surely the physical discs.

I was one of those who changed the 4k setting to video. While it has corrected things I get the impression it is struggling to do so. Especially on snakedance when the backgrounds were silvered. Although I may now be looking too hard.

I changed my setting to game mode on Arc of Infinity and the picture was corrected. When I got to Snakedance the problem started all over again. Other people say Snakedance looks great but it really seems to be struggling to maintain a steady image.

Season 15 has been mentioned as the mext collection to be released with a date of feb 2024. Any idea where the date of feb 2024, has come from?

I watched Five Doctor first. The picture was incredible. I then went back to Arc of Infinity and noticed strange movements on screen especially when characters moved, as if the player was struggling to find the image. Not all the time but at regular intervals. Like when you watch a video on YouTube in a low resolution and it shows up lots of digital noise. I thought it was the age of the master tape to blame. I then noticed this strange phenomenon was happening throughout the disc, including on behind the sofa. I set my TV display to game mode which did sort the problem out on that disc. I thought I’d solved it. Then I put Snakedance on and even with game mode set on display the problem is noticeable again and also on the Behind the Sofa episode.

I have been on the forums and I notice that other people are reporting the same problem, but not everyone. Has anyone else had this issue? Did you solve it? I thought it may be a bad batch of discs but I doubt there have been too many batches of this limited release.

Someone with a 4k player said he solved the problem by changing settings from auto to video on the player but I’ve only got an LG Blu-ray player and I’ve tried everything. Nothing fixes it fully on mine.

Does anyone have any theories about what might be causing it as the problem has not occurred on any other Collection releases.

I really hope it’s a fixable problem. I would not want the BBC to have to do a disc replacement on such a huge scale. It would be costly when the sets are costly enough to make in the first place.

Hopefully this reply reaches you, given I left a message on the Series 1-4 Blu Ray boxset page and the admins have kindly decided not to publish it. So, here goes….

I myself own an LG 4K Blu Ray disc player, and the number 1 issue I have with it, which other brands have worked out on their own units – with LG, their players will not automatically detect the picture hertz rate (you should see a choice of two hz rates, 24hz/25hz or 50hz/60hz)

Anything that I try to play that is 50 frames interlaced into 25 – Doctor Who, Dad’s Army, Only Fools and Horses (anything with studio footage generally) *If* I haven’t first gone into picture settings, and changed the Hz number to 50/60hz, then the player will simply assume I’m watching a 24fps movie shot on film instead, and treat anything with studio footage as so.

Basically, what I’d get with Classic Doctor Who is very smeary image, ghosting on movements, almost like lag that you’d see in video games.

Likewise, if I were to play a James Bond film, forget to set the LG player back to 24/25Hz, I also get not only visual stutter, but audio stutter too.

Players such as Panasonics automatically work out the Hz rate, as can Sony’s (I think, but there’s some kind of manual issue with Sony’s that I can’t remember right now).

The Five Doctors, a lot of it is shot on film at 24/25fps, so it’s likely your player was set to play 24/25Hz and got on fine with most of the episode, since the studio footage at 50fps is mostly people standing around barely moving.

Anyway, have a go at the picture settings in your LG player first – I also have an LG 4k tv, and for my own sanity, only use the game picture mode, as anything else throws sound out of sync on any external speakers / headphones (just leave any external sound devices on default timing settings) – then just turn the blue down under picture manual settings (and HDR settings) until the colour matches the other picture modes.

Hope all of this helps, as I went through near enough the exact same nightmare during my watch through of Classic Who during Lockdown.

Samuel. Thank you so much for taking the time and giving such a detailed response. It certainly sounds like the issue I have is with compatibility and settings rather than with the disc itself, which is a relief.

      September 25th, 2023 - 12:39pm

@The Time Lord 1944 – You’re welcome. Unfortunately it is still possible that it *might* be the discs themselves, but if you just follow the tips above, you can rule out your own equipment being the issue (or, if the discs then play absolutely fine, rule out disc issues). Wishing you best of luck.

@booboo – I simply shared an Amazon UK link to the 2005-2022 Limited Collectors Edition New Who Blu Ray set. Interestingly it’s a half finished advert, assuming either it was mistakenly put together for UK customers, or the BBC do intend to offer this same set to the UK.

Because, ooh I don’t know… Doctor Who’s made here in the UK isn’t it?

Samuel I still have the same problem having changed the settings. I have a basic Blu-ray player though not 4k player. What worries me is that Behind the Sofa has the same issues and they are not old masters. Also I have had some minimal lagging on Collection discs before but this is on a different level. A number of people have been saying they are having the same issues but they changed their 4k player settings and solved the problem. Perhaps I just need an upgrade on my player. Perhaps there is some bad messaging on the mastering of these discs that is sending incorrect signals. Or perhaps I have discs from a faulty batch, although I would have thought there weren’t multiple batches of this limited release. Have you got this set? If so do yours play ok? Arc of Infinity and Snakedance particularly.

      September 25th, 2023 - 3:26pm

I definitely think it’s a disc problem. I have 2 copies now and one copy is really messed up and the other copy is messed up but not as bad.

    • The Time Lord 1944

      September 25th, 2023 - 3:39pm

Jake E Its very frustrating. I don’t understand how this is possible. How can some discs be worse than others and some sets be worse than others. I would have thought they would have been mass produced to the same standard. Disc 1 for me was bad but disc 2 is far worse. Others have no issues at all. It’s very confusing. Does your set have the judders in the same places but just to different extents? Someone on here identified discs one, two, three and six being the worst but that might just be on his set. I think this going to be a real pain to fix. Where did you purchase your copies from?

    • Nb7

      September 25th, 2023 - 4:19pm

Mine works fine. I’ve got a Panasonic 4k player. Have you tried updating your blu ray player? Connect it to the internet via an Ethernet cable or wireless.

    • The Time Lord 1944

      September 25th, 2023 - 4:35pm

Nb7 thank you. Perhaps they play better on certain models. Someone on here had two copies. One was bad and another was very bad. Someone else updated their 4k player and still had the judder. Someone else changed their settings and the juddering stopped. I am wondering if it’s a particular batch thats bad but I would have thought a limited edition release would have just had one batch. Where did you order yours from? Mine was Amazon.

      @The Timelord 1944 + Jake E – Really sorry to hear what’s happening guys.

Your LG player, 4k or not, will have a picture option in there for Hz rate if it needs to be manually switched.

Panasonic disc players generally are well regarded, and have an automatic Hz switcher – but then again, so does my ps3 from 2007.

On my own LG player, the DVD that wasn’t set up properly on the correct Hz number was The Two Doctors dvd (not the Season 22 Blu Ray, specifically the dvd from the ‘Bred for War’ dvd boxset) as soon as I changed the Hz motion rate from 24/25Hz to 50/60Hz, the moving image went from total smeary pixel fest to nice, clear, back to normal picture.

Before anyone goes looking at brand new 4k players – if you have an old spare blu ray player kicking about – Use that first, plug it in and try out these latest Blu Ray discs, and then try some from previous Collection sets.

My concern is that it seems any modern day non-Panasonic player seems to not like these discs, based on these comments, and that’s really not a good thing. I have over the years had one or two new retail cheap looking transfers of classic WW2 movies just completely cr@p out, lag near the end, then completely stop working due to reading errors, despite the discs being immaculate.

Unless someone here can get an old ps3 or old blu ray player, put these discs in and verify the playback, then I couldn’t say for definite what’s going on, but it does sound worrying that so many people are having issues with these boxsets – I didn’t realise these problems went beyond this latest Peter Davison set?

      September 26th, 2023 - 9:33am

Yeah roughly the same spots but different levels of bad. But I don’t want to keep rebuying the set just to get one that’s a bit better. Ridiculous really

Jake E. The faults arent showing up on older tvs or panasonic players. Panosonic are known for upscaling and hiding faults so that might explain that. I have emailed bbc support to report it too.

Timelord – I’m actually watching from a Panasonic 4K player and am still experiencing issues with the discs. I’ve followed the advice of the restoration team and have forced 1080i resolution which seems to have alleviated the motion fluttering slightly; however, it is still noticeable and forcing a particular resolution each time you wish to watch an episode is not an ideal solution at all… Fingers crossed replacement discs are provided to those affected.
